  • PH Refinery trains Eleme, Okrika youths to acquire skills

    The management of the Port Harcourt Refining Company Limited (PHRC), Port Harcourt, Rivers State has initiated an empowerment scheme for youths from Eleme, Okrika Local Government Area of the state as part of efforts to make the youths self-reliant.

    The empowerment scheme, which involves skill training and capacity building, is being done through the company’s Youths Empowerment and Skills Acquisition Programme (YESAP).

    Speaking during the official flag-off of the programme at the company’s premises, the Managing Director of the PHRC, Mr. Ian Udoh, said the scheme was part of the corporate social responsibilities of the company to its host communities.

    Udoh advised the beneficiaries to make good use of the opportunity so that they would be relevant in the economic growth of their communities and the state as skills acquisition is a critical component of economic development.

    The objectives of the programme, the PHRC boss said, is to increase opportunities for wealth creation, economic empowerment and reduction of unemployment as well as to improve human capacity for sustainable development.

    He also assured that the trained youths would receive starter packs from the company at the end of their training.

    Also speaking, the Ag Executive Director, (Services) of the company, Sir Ralph Ugwu, said the youths would receive training in specific skills like: welding and fabrication, carpentry and woodwork, plumbing and pipe fitting, plaster of Paris (POP), fashion designing, GSM repairs, catering, poultry and fisheries production among others.

    He also pointed out that youth empowerment and skills acquisition programmes are some of the various social investments within the host communities of Eleme and Okrika, aimed at addressing issues of youth unemployment and its attendant negative consequences.

    Speaking at the event, the Paramount Ruler of Alesa Eleme, HRH Emperor Nkpe, thanked the company for the opportunities provided for the youths.

    The royal father who was represented by Chief Benson Dibia from his domain charged the company to build stronger ties with its host communities in order to achieve sustainable development.

    Some of the beneficiaries who spoke with Niger Delta Report, expressed appreciation to the company for the gesture, assuring that they would make judicious use of the opportunities given to them.

  • Warri NUJ trains reporters on social media

    For two days a fortnight ago, members of the Warri Correspondent Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) were involved in an intensive training programme organised by the chapel to help them cope with the challenges posed by the social media to their profession.

    The two-day seminar has as ‘The Social Media and The Challenges of Journalism Practice in the 21st Century’ as theme. The Chairman of the chapel, Comrade Mike Ikeogwu said it was aimed at keeping his members abreast with the new trends in journalism, particularly on tackling the challenges posed by the advent of social media.

    Ikeogwu remarked that it was regrettable that while journalists are often invited to cover similar trainings, they hardly get trainings that would improve their skills and help them perform at the highest level.

    Chairman of Delta State Council of NUJ, Comrade Norbert Chiazor, said the training was a welcome one and commended the leadership of the Warri NUJ for the initiative. He said social media is filled with amateur reporters who constantly inundate the social space with stories as they break.

    He said it was important for journalists to claim the social media, stating: “Nobody is truthful like the journalist. This is the time to take the centre stage, report objectively and responsibly.”

    He said the NUJ is planning a new direction for journalists to give them the respect they deserve.

    He revealed that the state council had clinched a deal with South Africa based Institute for Advancement in Journalism for the training of its members.

    Meanwhile, seasoned professionals taught during the training programme with Dr Olise Prosper of the Department of Mass Communication, Delta State University, Abraka, speaking on ‘Social Media Emergence: Implications of Journalism Practice in Nigeria’.

    He averred that the social media could either be a social solution and social problems for journalists. On the negative side, he said social media have increased the work load, led to information bombardment, weakened workers’ specialisation, lack of control of information from the media like twitter, Facebook, YouTube etc. He concluded that it has also debased journalism practice.

    Conversely, he noted that if harnessed properly, social medial can help interactivity; help build bridges as well as encourage creativity for reporters.

    The seminar also focused on helping journalists prepare for life after retirement with Dr Cyril Olomukoro of the Delta State Hospital Management Voard, Ozoro, delivering a paper titled: Post Retirement Plan: The Journalist Perspective.

    An associate Dean, Students Affairs, DELSU, Dr. Emmanuel Ufuophu-Biri Emmanuel and Chigozi Eti, a lecturer in Journalism and Media Language at the Babcock University, Ogun State, taught on ‘Writing for the New Media: Strategies, Challenges and Prospects and Brand Story Telling respectively.

    Other presenters included Kalu Treasure, a multimedia consultant and Dr Charles Edeogu, who presented a paper on ‘Social Media as Tool for Advancement in Journalism Practice in the 21st Century and Proposal Writing and Feasibility Paper Development respectively.

    There were also goodwill messages from the Delta State Governor, Dr Emmanuel Uduaghan; Commissioner for Information, Chike Ogeah; the Agadagba of Egbema Kingdom, HRM Tiemo Binipre III and others.

    Governor Uduaghan, who was represented by Mr Linus Chime, Press Secretary (Warri), described the training as apt. He said the governor would cooperate with the union in advancing professionalism, stressing that it was in the interest of government to have a well trained and objective press.

    Speaking in the same vein, Ogeah who was represented by Mr Paul Osahon, commended the NUJ for the initiative and urged journalists in the state to be factual and objective in their reports.

    For his part, Chief DM Bubor, who represented the Egbema monarch, commended the press for being the hope of the common man. He said journalists have made more sacrifice in the fight for Nigeria’s democracy.

    The seminar ended with a closing ceremony held at the Poolside of Godatin Hotel, Enerhen venue of the programme.

    The chapel Vice, Comr Joe Ogbodu, and other members of the chapel described the training as apt and relevant to the present realities they face in the job.

    “I have learnt a lot, not only on how to do my job well, but also how to prepare for life after retirement,” Ogbodu added.

    Fed Govt trains 50 leather dealers on preservation technique

    The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has trained 50 leather dealers in Bauchi State on hides and skin preservation.

    The Director, Bauchi State Green House of the ministry, Mallam Mohammed Yusuf, made this known when he declared open the training in Bauchi.

    He said the training was part of government efforts to strengthen leather business under the special leather value chain initiative of the Federal Government’s Growth Enhancement Support scheme (GES).

    He said the scheme would soon roll out the distribution of 10 bags of 50 kg industrial salt at 50 per cent discount to 200 registered leather dealers in the state.

    “Each beneficiary was expected to pay N28, 000 for the 10 bags, while the Federal Government will pay 50 per cent,’’ he said.

    According to him, the industrial salt will enable the buyers preserve large quantity of leather before taking them to the tanneries for further processing.

    He said the training was designed to equip the beneficiaries with the needed techniques on how to efficiently and effectively apply the industrial salt to achieve maximum result.

    The director said the measure was to improve the quality and quantity of leather production, processing and exportation to attract more foreign exchange.

    “One of the goals of the leather value chain initiative was to increase the production of finished leather by 50 per cent from the current 30 million tonnes to 45 million tonnes by 2015.

    “It will also reduce importation of finished leather product by 10 per cent and encourage private sector investment in the sub-sector.

    “With effective leather and skin preservation techniques, processing, production and trading, the leather industry would experience a boost.

  • Council trains staff

    No fewer than 35 members of staff of Somolu Local Government Area of Lagos have attended a two-day training programme organised by the council chairman, Hon. Gbolahan Bago-Stowe.

    The staff were drawn from different departments of the council such as information, education, budget, finance, agriculture, anvironment, legal, etc.

    The goal of the exercise was clear: to equip the junior staff to focus and learn good administrative practices.

    The theme of the training programme was: Effective Revenue Generation and Office Routine.

    The council Manager, Mrs. Kehinde Babatunde, who represented the council chairman, said that the training was borne out the need to enhance the productivity of the staff and to equip them for the challenges in line with the procedure set by the council for the junior staff.

    Speaking further, Babatunde said that training is not only aimed at improving the quality of workers’ service alone, but also to show the the importance the council administration attaches to staff welfare.

    She told the participating staff to use the training to improve their skills in order to discharge their official duties effectively.

    Her words: “Our local government council is still the best in terms of staff welfare and training.”

    The human resources officer of the council, Mrs Bola Adeyemi thanked the chairman and appealed to all the participants not only to have the knowledge of work but also be ready to be more diligent in their duties in order to attain greater heights.

  • Oyo trains pupils

    The Oyo State government has begun a two-week skill acquisition and leadership training for pupils in Senior Secondary Schools (SSS).

    Commissioner for Education Mrs. Adetokunbo Fayokun opened the vacation training in Ibadan yesterday.

    She said the training was to equip the pupils with various skills to face future challenges and generate wealth.

    Mrs. Fayokun urged the pupils to be disciplined and focused to get the best of the training, adding that the training would run simultaneously in all the eight educational zones of the state, which include: Ibadan City, Ibadan less City, Oyo, Ogbomoso, Ibarapa, Okeho, Saki and Irepo.

    Permanent Secretary of the ministry Dr. Bashir Bello said the training was aimed at instilling a sense of self-fulfillment, innovation and motivation in the pupils.

    Students will be trained in various skills, such as hair cut, cookery, bead making, hair makeup, video/TV production and ICT .

  • NDE trains 100 youths

    The National Directorate of Employment (NDE) has begun training of over 100 youths in farming.

    The youths were from Jattu, Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo State under the Rural Agricultural Development Scheme (RADTS) of the NDE.

    Edo State Coordinator of NDE, Mrs Ayo Edegbai, stated this at the commencement of the training programme supported by Hon Philip Shaibu.

    Edegbai said the programme was to re-orient the youths to stop them from seeking white collar jobs.

    She said that one month of the programme would be spent on theoretical and general principles of agriculture while the remaining two months would be dedicated to field work.

    “The importance of the training cannot be over-emphasised given the level of commitment and seriousness the present administration attaches to agriculture.

    “RADTS adopts an integrated farming demonstration and training approach in capacity building for community empowerment and rural development”, she said.

    She said the course would involve soil and land management, general crop production, basic poultry science, pig farming and elementary fishing techniques.

    Speaker of Edo State House of Assembly, Uyigue Igbe, said the programme was designed to reduce youth restiveness.

  • Council trains workers on leadership

    The Yaba Local Council Development Area (LCDA) of Lagos State has organised a two-day leadership workshop. Held at the council’s secretariat, it was tagged: ‘Leadership Skill for Local Government Administrative and Executive Officers’.

    The workshop, which was opened by the council’s chairman, Hon. Jide Jimoh, was aimed at sharpening the leadership effectiveness and self-confidence of workers.

    He said: ”Our staff should exhibit confidence and honesty in everything they do. They must have the confidence to manage people, show them the right path, and be more dedicated to work for the betterment of the others and the organisation.”

    “What is important for every worker is that he must be diligent and committed to his responsibility. Even, if the boss is not around, the work of the local government must not stop. There must be someone who is trustworthy with confidence to do the job for him”.

    He stressed that the workshop would also provide an excellent opportunity for participants to exchange ideas on how to fashion out enduring strategies that enable local government perform its responsibility of making life worth living for the people at the grassroots level.

  • US NGO trains biomedical engineers, technicians

    The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) in collaboration with a non-profit organisation in the United States of America, Medshare, is providing free training for biomedical engineers and technicians.

    A statement issued  in Abuja by the Special Assistant (Media & Publicity) to the Minister of State for FCT, Oluyinka Akintunde, said the training was being funded with a grant obtained by Medshare from generous partners in the United States.

    Akintunde disclosed that the choice of the FCT as recipient of the grant was facilitated by the Honourable Minister of State for FCT, Oloye Olajumoke Akinjide.

    He added that the Health and Human Services Secretariat in the FCT would host the training of over 50 participants from various states of the federation from April 2 to 5.

    He quoted the FCT Minister of State, Akinjide, as saying that the Administration was committed to ensuring a sustainable quality and affordable healthcare delivery system in the Federal Capital City, Area councils and satellite towns.

    ”This training is coming at a time when the FCT administration is focused on a health transformation agenda poised at ensuring a sustainable quality and affordable healthcare delivery system comparable to those of developed cities around the world.

    ”It is anticipated that this specialized training in the repair, servicing and maintenance of biomedical equipment will go a long way in allowing the FCTA achieve these laudable objectives,” Akinjide stated.

    Medshare, a registered as a non-profit organisation in the USA, works in the Health sector to bridge the gap between demand and surplus through the collection of surplus medical equipment and supplies from manufacturers, distributors and hospitals, and the redistribution to qualified healthcare facilities in developing countries.

    Since its inception in 1998, Medshare has donated over $93million worth of medical supplies and equipment in more than 700 forty-foot containers to hospitals and clinics in the economically developing world.

    According to the official website of Spartak Moscow, Nigeria international Emmanuel Emenike is gradually recovering from the thigh injury he picked up at the African Cup of Nations semi – final clash against Mali.

    On Tuesday, the red and white started preparing for the 23rd round of matches in the Russian Premier League, which is an away tie against Isaac Okoronkwo’s Rostov.

    Emmanuel Emenike had a workout with his teammates and afterwards had an individual session with the fitness coach.

    If the attacker’s rehabilitation goes according to plan, he could be back on the pitch as early as next weekend against Amkar Perm. The 25 – year – old Super Eagle has scored 5 goals in 15 appearances in the RPL.

  • Lagos trains workers for improved service

    Officials of the Lagos State Government will today conclude three-day training on advanced procurement planning for effective budget implementation to prepare an enabling ground for more foreign investors.

    The training, which was organised by the Ministry of Establishment, Training and Pensions, in collaboration with Solid Vision Global Resources, has for the three days prepared procurement officers in the state for improved discharge of their duties in line with international practices.

    The training team, led by a former Permanent Secretary in the state, now Managing Director of Solid Vision, Mr Babatunde Oshodi, told the trainees: “The state has invested heavily in passing the procurement law and building capacity process. This training is to further prepare them for full implementation of the procurement law in 2014, which will eventually reduce opportunities for competition and malpractices in awarding government contracts.

    “This is a good time to expose the officers to real life situation in procurement planning according to international best practices. It is also to ensure transparency, economy and value for money.”

    He said that after the seminar, government officials would be able to discharge their duties diligently and prevent wastages so that funds could be used effectively.

    Oshodi observed that investors are now scouting for African countries with investment potentials, adding: “They want a country where transparency is evident. Procurement process is a tool to make Lagos a force to reckon with. South Africa and Ghana have also been practising procurement process. Thus, we have to be competitive.”

    One of the resource persons, Wole Afuye, said implementing procurement processes ought to be in line with standard practices. He added that projects must have a procurement plan since implementation is time-based to avoid emergency acquisitions, reduce administrative bottlenecks and ensure value for money.
