    Poly trains artisans

    The management of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo (RUGIPO) has floated a workshop to train artisans in a skill acquisition programme to educate them on effectiveness and efficient service delivery. The Rector, Prof Igbekele Ajibefun, dropped the hint during the maiden lecture of Sunshine State Youth Movement (SSYM).

    The programme was held last Thursday at Solton International Hotel, Akure. The Rector said the initiative was to provide functional education and make skill acquisition the focus of students.

    Ajibefun said the institution’s focus on the practical programme was to provide skilled manpower in special areas of societal needs. He said the polytechnic was moving towards the provision of skilled students, who would be independent after their graduation.

    The first set of candidates admitted for the programme will commence their training in the first week of March, he stated.

    According to the Rector, the full implementation of the vocational programme would make students of the polytechnic to acquire practical skills in, at least, one area before graduation. He noted the skill acquisition remained solution to youth unemployment ravaging the nation.

    Ajibefun praised the Ondo State government for supporting the programme. He, however, stressed that the success of the programme would depend on availability of electricity.

    The Peer Educators’ Trainers Club (C-PETs), a group of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), in Ikirun, Ifelodun Local Government Area of Osun State, has held a reproductive health workshop for students of El- Shadai International Secondary School, Ikirun.

    The workshop with the theme HIV education: A panacea to teenage pregnancy effects among secondary schools was held to underscore the importance of adolescent reproductive education among teenagers.

    According to Michael Ashang, the coordinator of the community development group, HIV education was pertinent to prevent and manage the epidemic among teenagers. The club spoke on different topics, aimed at providing factual information on adolescent reproductive health and HIV/AIDS.

    Ashang spoke on the myths, misconceptions, and meaning of the deadly disease, adding that out of 100 per cent incidents of HIV/AIDS, about 80 per cent were teenagers and adolescents with age ranging from 13 to 19 years.

    Sule Olanrewaju, the organising secretary, spoke on the socio-economic impacts of HIV/AIDS and its management. The publicity secretary of the club, Peace Echendu, spoke on the transmission, prevention, and symptoms of the viral disease.

    At the end of the workshop, a director at the school, Pastor O. Oladimeji, praised the group for considering the school for the programme. Oladimeji said the seminar would help teenagers in the school to increase their self-esteem and make decisions that would affect their lives positively.

    The Lagos State government has through the office of the Local Government Establishment Pension and Training trained human resources managers at the local government level.They were trained on Information Communication Technology (ICT).

    The training held at the Lagos State Council of Chambers of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), Ikeja Lagos, was to ensure that all human resources managers in the councils understand the importance of ICT to enhance job performance.

    Speaking on the essence of the training the Permanent Secretary, Local Government Establishment Pension and Training, Mr Ashimi Jamiu Adewale disclosed that it was meant to equip the council human resources managers with more ICT knowledge and its application to their jobs.

    “The essence of the training is to train our local government personnel on the use of computer because that is what is in operation now all over the world and in few years time, there will be nothing you can do without ICT.

    management is about decision making and if you want to take any sound decision you need ICT, it is one of the basic means to get data and store it for future use, so the main motive is to train the local government Human Resource Managers and we hope it will translate into better service delivery at the local government level,” he said.

    The chairman Local Government Service Commission Alhaji Moshood Oluwole Ojikutu said the training will enables the HR to gain more knowledge of the ICT and enhance their performances at the local government level.

    “We have been training all cadres of staff in the local government regularly, but this particular one we needed it for our human resources managers because of the little gap between our expectation of their performance and the real job performance, we know that they will gain a lot more from the knowledge of ICT and its application to their jobs,” he said.

    Maccabi Tel Aviv session: Enyeama trains again

    According to the official website of Maccabi Tel Aviv, Nigeria goalie Vincent Enyeama returned to Israel on Friday night and had his first training session with his teammates after more than one month of absence due to national team assignment with the Super Eagles.

    The Yellows are preparing for the 23rd round of matches in the Israeli championship against Bnei Yehuda today. Enyeama received flowers from the club for winning the African Cup.

    At this point, it is unknown if Enyeama would replace back-up goalie Barak Levi for the encounter at the Bloomfield Satdium, Tel Aviv.

    Meanwhile, the other Nigerian at Maccabi Tel Aviv Kehinde Olanrewaju scored a last-gasp goal after 89 minutes in the 1 – 0 win over bitter rivals Hapoel Tel Aviv in the Youth League on Saturday. He was also on target last week against Hapoel Be’er Sheva.

     

  • Abia trains 300 youths

    Abia State government has designed a training programme for 300 youths drawn from all the 17 local government areas of the state as part of its youth empowerment programme.

    The youths will be trained in computer operation, interior decoration, photography and video, fashion and design among others, while the best graduating trainees will be given special empowerment by the state government.

    The programme is a collaboration between the office of the wife of the Abia State Governor, the Sure-P and the National Directorate of Employment, NDE and other donor agencies.

    Addressing participants at the formal opening of the programme in Umuahia, wife of Abia State Governor Mrs. Mercy Odochi Orji charged the participants to take advantage of the programme to make their lives better.

    Mrs Orji noted that the programme was the state government’s contribution to the development of the youth, saying that they must abide by the regulations of the programme in order to qualify for the facilities attached to it. She said: “In pursuance of this, you are to fully complete and submit the monthly course work, maintain 100per cent class attendance each month, failure to meet the above requirement will result in the forfeiture of the monthly allowance”.

    The governor’s wife said that to qualify for the start-up equipment, the trainees are also required to have 100 per cent total attendance, attend three months internship with an established organisation in the choice skill and make at least 50 per cent pass mark in the final examination.

    Speaking at the programme, chairman of Sure-P in the state, Chief Chris Nkwonta represented by Prof Onwukwe Alaezi, said the money accruing from the petroleum subsidy would be reinvested in the programme to make life better for the youth.

    In a bid to ensure a free and fair election on October 20, a political platform in the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), the Independent Campaign Network (ICN), at the weekend urged members to guard against violence.

    Speaking at a one-day sensitisation seminar organised for ACN’s agents expected to man the 3,007 polling units, the convener of the programme, Femi Adekanmbi, said the party was ready to support electoral agencies to ensure that the poll is violence-free.

    Adekanmbi, a former House of Representatives candidate of ACN, said the programme was to enlighten members with a view to preparing them with the right attitude and political education for the October 20 poll.

    “We know the importance of this coming election because it will determine the fate of the indigenes in the next four years. As a party who has responsible members and who is also preparing to win the election, we have decided to educate our members, particularly youths, on the need to guard against political violence.

    “We are working towards success. We assure the people that our party will never involve in political violence. At the end of this programme, participants will know the rules and regulations of the electoral body. We are ready to support the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to enable Ondo State experience a violence-free poll.”

    The ACN candidate, Rotimi Akeredolu (SAN), who was represented by a former governorship aspirant, Comrade Sola Iji, hailed ACN members for remaining calm, despite the attacks by Labour Party thugs during the last rallies.

    He said leaders of the party would preach peace to prevent violence before and after the election.

    The State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Mr. Akin Orebiyi, lauded the party for organising the training.

    He re-assured the electorate of the electoral body’s readiness to make the forthcoming poll a benchmark for future elections.

  • Ex-Eaglets Ademola Raphael trains with 3SC

    Ex-Nigeria U17 star Ademola Raphael has returned from a stint in Spain and he is training with 3SC with the hope of joining the team.

    Raphael, who was part of the team who won the 2007 U17 World Cup, told MTNFootball.com he is a free agent after his contract with Spanish club Atletico Baleares ran out this year.

    The creative midfielder, who also trained with Shooting Stars at the beginning of last season before he returned to Europe, said he is now ready to join ‘The Oluyole Warriors’ for the coming season.

    “I have to return to the country to play good football. I’m a free agent and this is an opportunity for me to stay back with my family after my time in Spain,” he said.

    “I chose Shooting Stars because I love the club, they are one of the best clubs in Nigeria. I am back in Nigeria to play for them. I want to also win trophies with them because I still remember those days when they used to have a lot of stars playing for the national team and winning trophies.”

    He said it would also be an opportunity to reunite with his Golden Eaglets teammates from the class of 2007, Laide Okanlawon and Dele Ajiboye, who are with the Ibadan club.

    Ex-Nigeria International, Nwankwo Kanu, who has been in a running battle with English club, Portsmouth over allegations of a breach of contract was on Wednesday sighted at the Nigeria Police College.

    The player who is Pompey’s longest serving player was with his younger brother and footballer, Ogbonnaya Kanu jogging.

    SportingLife gathered from an impeccable source that the ex-Super Eagles forward also plays football and makes use of the gym.

    “You will find him here in the morning keeping fit. I guess that is his way of retaining his fitness level since he has not been involved in any top flight football for some time,” said the source.

    Kanu should have returned to England since July for pre-season training but decided to stay put in Nigeria until the remaining 12 months of his contract is settled.

    And in a bid to drive home his case, he filed claims running into million of pounds against the Blues with the English Football League Board.

    For this reason, Portsmouth which has gone into administration has been in prolonged talks with the 35-year-old regarding a compromise agreement. They have been in talks with his lawyer, Samuel Okoronkwo.

    The former Super Eagles skipper, Nwankwo is among the top football personalities expected to grace today’s football forum Soccerrex at the Oriental Hotel.
