    NDE trains 30 youths

    The National Directorate of Employment (NDE) in Kano State is training 30 unemployed youths on environmental beautification under its empowerment programme.

    The state NDE Coordinator, Alhaji Aliyu Bichi, addressed reporters yesterday in Kano ion the training.

    He noted that under the programme, the beneficiaries would be trained in POP, interlock and tree nurseries production.

    Citibank Nigeria Limited last week, hosted the annual Citi Financial Journalists Training in Lagos. The event covered topics on financial markets and macroeconomics. It was facilitated by the bank’s Nigeria’s Chief Operating Officer (COO), Akin Dawodu; Country Treasurer,  Bayo Adeyemo; Managing Director of SDI/Ruyi Communications, Soni Irabor and Managing Director of Teambuilding Nigeria, Yinka Olugbodi.

    The training provided an in-depth analysis of the financial markets and highlighted how economic trends and indicators should be interpreted.

    The forum also provided opportunity for interactive discussions among key media operators in the local market. The Citi Financial Journalists Training aligns with Citi’s commitment towards capacity building among various stakeholders in the Nigerian economic space.

    “The Citi Financial Journalists Training speaks to one of the bank’s core strengths in the market. Over the last 30 years, we have been at the forefront of providing financial markets training to industry colleagues, including our competitors, as well as regulators such as the Central Bank of Nigeria,” Dawodu said.

    Graduate trains orphans in skills

    Oladimeji Temitope, an Accounting graduate of the  Obafemi Awolowo University,  Ile-Ife, Osun State, held a skills acquistion workshop for orphans at Solid Rock and Covenant Orphanages at Moro, in Osun State., tagged: “Project skill-up” , it was held under the auspices of Precious Stones, a non- governmental organisation founded by the graduate.

    In her remark, she said:  “Our aim at Precious Stones is to infuse love into child early. This, we believe, is the bedrock upon which other life issues are built, and this is why our focus is on children, but in a major way,the less privileged.”

    She was received by a 10-man team, including Odidimu Funmilopeda, the skills instructor.

    The children were taught how to make wrist beads with their names, ear-rings, neck chains, wrapping books with various clothing materials, among others.

    Speaking to CAMPUSLIFE, Mrs Oroyemi Ayoola, the matron of the orphanage, praised the initiative and thanked the organisers for the gesture.

    ‘The event is a blessing to the children and the centre. I believe that as they practise more, the skill acquisition would not only help them to make money for themselves, but also help them in their future.”

    Temitope reiterated their commitment to the project saying:  “our vision is to be global agents of change and hope while our mission is to reach the unreached and also  bring children of different race and tribe to the awareness and consciousness of God’s love.”

  • NSE trains operators on portfolio management

    The Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) yesterday organised a one-day seminar to strengthen the capacity of stockbrokers, portfolio managers and other investors in the area of portfolio management.

    The seminar, which was in collaboration with Exchange Traded Funds (ETF) providers including Vetiva Fund Managers Limited, Lotus Capital Limited and ABSA Capital, South Africa, exposed participants to more effective strategies in portfolio management.

    Head, product management department, Nigerian Stock Exchange, Mr. Dipo Omotoso said that the training was designed to enlightened stakeholders on key areas such as using beta strategies in Portfolio Construction and the benefits of ETFs as an asset allocation tool.

    “The seminar also emphasizes the Exchange’s commitment to facilitate capacity building for market practitioners,” Omotoso said.

    According to him, participants at the seminar were taken through various topics including passive investment and portfolio benchmarking; alpha and beta strategies; use of ETFs and their benefits as alternative investment vehicles in portfolio construction;  ETF regulatory framework in Nigeria and investor protection guidelines.

  • NDE trains 100 in Abuja

    The National Directorate of Employment (NDE) has kicked off a six-month in-house training in some trades at its new Model Multipurpose Skills Acquisition Centre at Kuduru, Abuja.

    Participants will be trained in eight trades: plumbing, auto-tronics, computer engineering, furniture making metal fabrication, electrical installation, GSM services, and fashion design.

    Coordinator of the NDE in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr. Romiluyi Oludare Newton urged the 100 trainees to adhere to rules of the camp or they wiould kicked out.

    He said beneficiaries should count themselves lucky because thousands applied for the scheme from all over the FCT. He reminded them that the directorate was shifting from training its participants through individual master trainers to a more formal school setting, which is obtainable at the new model skills centre.

    He assured the trainees and their trainers that the Director-General of NDE Mallam Abubakar Mohammed is passionate and committed to the success of the pilot training, considering the huge financial investment put into completing the skills acquisition centre for the training.

    Nwankwo trains with Coimbra mates

    As exclusively reported by SL10 three weeks ago, Ex Nigeria Under-23 captain and former Inter-Milan midfielder Obiorah Nwankwo has completed his move from newly promoted Spanish League side Cordoba to Academica Coimbra of Portugal.

    The 23-year-old Nwankwo trained with the rest of his new teammates on Saturday at the club’s preseason training camp after a medical last Friday.

    The AFCON 2013 winner will be hoping his past experience working with coach Paulo Sergio at CFR Cluj in Romania will bring out the best in him in his new surroundings.

    Last season a combination of injuries and poor form meant he made only seven appearances for Cordoba who made it to the La Liga via the play-off.

    The former Heartland and Wikki Tourist player started his career brightly at Inter-Milan but after a  series of unsuccessful loan spells he was sold three years ago to CFR Cluj of Romania.

    In Romania he spent two years working with his present coach at his new club Paulo Sergio before departing the team for Spain owing to their financial issues.

    Once billed as a future Super Eagles regular he has only made seven appearances for the Eagles till date but he was a part of the Nigeria team that lifted the Nations Cup in South Africa appearing once as a late substitute  against Zambia in Nigeria’s second group game.

    At Academica it is rumoured he will replace another Nigerian in the middle in John Ogu who has signalled his intention to leave the team after a not too happy time last season and has just a year left in his deal.

    Chidera Eze trains with FC Porto U19s

    Flying Eagles forward  Chidera Eze is now  training with the FC Porto U19 team and did not travel with the main squad to pre-season in the Netherlands.

    Eze has reached an agreement with the Nigeria U20 team not to feature in next month’s final African Youth Championship qualifier against Lesotho so as to focus on his club career.

    He scored one of the goals as the Flying Eagles dismantled Tanzania to advance in the qualifying series for Senegal 2015.

    But in the process he suffered a hamstring injury, which he has since recovered from.

    Eze featured for Nigeria at last year’s FIFA U17 World Cup in United Arab Emirates,where the country clinched a record fourth championship.

  • Army trains personnel on conflict control

    The Army is training its personnel on conflict management to enhance their skills during operations.

    The three-day workshop at the headquarters of the Nigerian Army College of Logistics (NACOL), was organised in conjunction with the Impact for Change and Development as well as the Konrad Adenauer Foundation of Germany.

    Declaring the workshop open, the Commandant, NACOL, Gen. A.B.M. Gana  said the workshop was part of the security agencies’ resolve to address national issues in order to enthrone peace and development.

    The Deputy Commandant of NACOL, Gen. J.O. Oni, highlighted the need to train and improve skills for all cadres of the security apparatus since military and paramilitary personnel are increasingly involved in conflict management.

    Sterling Bank have organised   seminar for Small and Medium Enterprises’ (SMEs) owners.

    The bank’s Executive Director, Abubakar Suleiman said the programme was aimed at enhancing the managerial and entrepreneurial qualities of SMEs’operators. He said SMEs play critical roles in the development of the economy.

    “It is our view that for us to be able to support SMEs, the standard for reporting and the day-to-day management of the organisation needs to improve. We are hoping that this seminar would achieve this objective. We are focused on people who have done business with us for a while and we want to assist them to take their businesses to another level. The process for transforming SMEs to become bigger players and part of national growth does not start and end with finance. A huge part of it starts with education,” he said.

    Suleiman assured that the bank will continue to invest in capacity building in the sector as the national economic development prospects of any country is hinged on SMEs.

    He, however, noted that the expected growth of the sub-sector would not be achieved unless there is an improvement in the quality of infrastructure.

    Chief Executive Officer, Africa Star Limited, Mr. Bawor Benjamin, commended the bank for coming up with the training, adding that it would go a long way in encouraging owners of small and medium scale businesses and give them an idea of how to grow their businesses, establish proper structures, so that they can access funds for business growth.

    Nigeria trains boxers for World Youth Championships

    Peter Konyegwachie, the Chief Coach, Nigeria Boxing Federation (NFB), on Thursday said that comprehensive training was in top gear for Nigeria to achieve a successful outing at the forthcoming World Youth Championships.

    Konyegwachie told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that the championships would hold in Sofia, Bulgaria from April 10 to April 17.

    He said training schedules had been increased to hold two times daily, to enable the technical crew impart the required tactics on boxers approved by the Amateur International Boxing Association (AIBA).

    “We are working hard to ensure that the boxers that will represent the country at the tournament are abreast with the requirements to win laurels.

    “We deemed it necessary to extend our training to evening sessions so that there will be adequate time for practical sessions, as well as to impart morals to the boxers.

    “Although we are still observing open camp at the National Stadium, we are hopeful of inviting boxers for closed camping as soon as possible,’’ he said.

    Konyegwachie said that three female and eight males of various weight categories would be selected at the end of the camping, for the championships.

    “Right now, we have over 20 male and female boxers training and contesting for selection, but only those that complement the requirement will make it, no sentiment or favouritism,’’ he said.

    According to him, the idea is to make sure that the boxers are good ambassadors and to make them comport themselves to avoid any form of embarrassment in Bulgaria.

    Konyegwachie expressed delight at the boxers’ response to the training, saying that it depicts that they are committed to making the country proud at the tourney.
