TVC launches first all entertainment show

Television Continental (TVC) will start an all entertainment breakfast show called Wake Up Nigeria today. The program which is set to air on weekdays between 7am and 9am would be anchored by Abayomi Fawope and Titilayo Oyinsan and also supported by three other presenters.

Wake up Nigeria is poised to be packed with celebrity interviews, cookery, live music, fashion, health, celebrity news, showbiz gossip and stand-up comedy. The package also includes news headlines and sports.

According to TVC’s deputy director programmes, Morayo Afolabi-Brow, over the decades the taste of Nigerian viewers has evolved dramatically just as their yearning for premium entertainment content has grown significantly and Wake up Nigeria is TVC’s robust response to that yearning.

“The show’s lively pace and fun filled format is conceptualized to ensure viewers awaken to exciting mornings and also helping to set the tone for their day,” she said.

“Its rich, varied and compelling content is guaranteed to keep viewers glued to their TV sets for the length of programme. We also have juicy lifestyle and human angle stories lined up to provide inspiration for viewers so they can aim high and live their best lives.”

Afolabi Brown also added that Wake Up Nigeria is not in any way replacing “Your Views “which airs by 10am as they both have different contents.

“They are two different shows, yes there might be similar things but Your Views is regular women expressing their views on topical issues which is totally different from having general entertainment content for viewers so there’s no duplicate. On this show, we will be going in-depth with the interview; there will be mini documentaries on each guest.”

Wake Up Nigeria is a largely politics free zone with a remit to entertain the nation.

Also, CEO Continental Broadcasting Services (CBS), owners of TVC, Andrew Hanlon, said this is beginning of a new TVC and what makes it new is a programme like this, this is a big investment for us. Life here in Nigeria is hard for a lot of people; we want to bring more entertainment programmes that will get to everyone no matter where you are from and no matter what you do and this programme will do just that.”

Notorious ‘one chance’ bandits on Wednesday attacked a producer with Television Continental  (TVC), Toyin Ibrahim and four others, dispossessing them of their valuables.

The incident occurred at about 5:30am few minutes after she boarded a commercial bus at Ketu bridge heading towards Berger-Magodo.

Ibrahim, who is currently being treated at a hospital in Magodo stated that the criminals attacked them barely two minutes after entering the bus, collecting the phones and cash.

She said they also took victims’ Automated Teller Machine (ATM) cards to withdraw money.

Showing her torn jeans trousers to reporters, she stated that she was almost raped after she bit one of the robbers.

Her words: “Two minutes after the vehicle took off one of the robbers began to hit me. He asked me of my ATM pin number but I gave him a wrong number. When they tried the numbers and discovered that the pin was a fake one, they descended on me, hitting and booting me with their heavy shoes.

“I had to tell them the truth, giving them the three pin numbers of my GTB and Skye Banks cards. As they were beating me, I bit one of them and he became angry and tore my jeans trousers.

“He wanted to rape me. I was saved by one of them who warned that there was no time for that. The company just paid my salary and I was hoping to withdraw some money yesterday. The robbers have withdrawn all.

“It was a 14- seater bus. I wanted to sit at the second seat at the back of driver’s seat, but the conductor said that was his seat so I had to go to the last seat. I and four other people were victims.

“They were stepping and marching me very hard. I would have died if they had succeeded in raping me. Even as they were doing that, they pushed two victims down on motion. They injured me in the head.

“I am still spitting blood. They stole my three ATM cards, one phone and the N3,000 in my pocket. They robbed other victims too.”

As part of his reward for winning the Diamond Bank #youneedanewbank theme song remix competition, Nnamdi Oluchukwu, aka Solitude, has signed a record deal with Major Bangz, producer of the hit tracks “Alobam” and ”Shoki.”

The new theme song is aimed at promoting the bank as the new model for customer-focused banking in Nigeria.

The competition which was in two phases – a dance and remix competition – required contestants to send in video entries of original dance or song remix of the TVC campaign while the public voted for their favourite videos. Entries with the highest number of votes emerged winners and their owners were rewarded with a cash prize of N250, 000 for the dance competition and N1.5 million and a record deal with Major Bangz in the remix category. Four runners-up were rewarded with cash prizes of N150, 000 each.

Solitude, an Asaba, Delta State-based artiste, clinched the N1.5 million cash prize alongside the recording deal while The Amazing Crew, an Ilorin, Kwara State-based dance group, won the dance competition and was rewarded with N250, 000.

“I have participated in many song competitions but #youneedanewbank was a different experience for me as the selection process was very transparent,” said Solitude who has been a musician for eight years.

“My friend actually introduced me to the competition and we actively monitored the votes online.”

He said further: “Based on my experience, I can confidently tell people that Diamond Bank fulfills its promises as I got everything as promised. My musical career has gotten a huge lift from this competition and I will be dropping my song, produced by Major Bangz, shortly.”

Speaking during a courtesy visit of the winners to the bank, AyonaTrimnell, Divisional Head, Corporate Communications, Diamond Bank Plc, said the competition provides opportunities for up and coming artistes to make their mark in the fast growing Nigerian music industry.

She said: “We had many interesting entries and Nigerians selected their favourites. We hope that the opportunities offered by this competition will help our winners realize their ambitions and also propel them to be worthy ambassadors of the country, particularly in the area of music.”

According to Tade Davis of The Amazing Crew, it was a pleasant surprise to have won the competition.

“We are mainly students based in Ilorin and logistics is usually a challenge for us in participating for competitions like this,” said Davis. “When we learnt of the #youneedanewbank competition we immediately applied; more so as the entries were going to be uploaded online and selection was through public voting. We are deeply grateful to Diamond Bank for making this competition truly Nigerian in outlook by creating a level playing field for all competitors irrespective of their location.”

Polls: Reps deplore calls for use of TVC

    •Tenure elongation will fail

The House of Representatives condemned yesterday calls for the use of Temporary Voter card (TVC) for next month’s general elections.

The lawmakers have also assured Nigerians that tenure elongation in any guise would not get the backing of the lower chamber of the National Assembly.

House Spokesman Zakari Mohammed spoke during a media chat yesterday said it was regrettable that some people could call for the use of Temporary Voter Card (TVC) for the election at a time so much progress had been recorded with the Permanent Voter Card (PVC).

According to him, opposition to the use of card reader machines smacks of attempt to manipulate the election.

“We are in support of the use of the card readers in the general elections since it was in line with global best practices to ensure a free and fair poll. We have to grow, we are not in the Stone Age,” he said.

Besides, Mohammeed noted that based on the successes so far recorded by the independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the distribution of the PVCs, every Nigerian should support the effort aimed at conducting a free and credible election.

On insinuation of attempt to perpetuate the incumbent government in power, Mohammed said tenure elongation would not get the support of the lawmakers.

He allayed fears that most Federal lawmakers that failed to secure return tickets of their parties may support attempt to extend President Jonathan’s tenure.

He denied allegation that tenure elongation caused sharp division in the House during the Wednesday closed session, saying, “”Tenure elongation is not constitutional and it is not within the ambit of the law.

“We have sworn to uphold the constitution. We are a creation of the constitution but of course people are entitled to their opinion because it is something we cannot control.

“So, it was not a matter tabled before us but people are entitled to their opinions. For us in the 7th Assembly, our tenure ends in June and we know that the President’s tenure ends in May 29.

“Even the President himself said May 29 is sacrosanct. So even the idea of tenure elongation is against good conscience. Everybody contemplating that is not fair to Nigerians.

“We owe this country that duty to uphold the constitution so that Nigerians would not shout to high heavens when they see breaches happening. We want democracy to thrive and we want to enthrone good governance in the country”.
