Unilag VC harps on interdisciplinary research to drive development

Nigeria needs multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary researches to drive the needed development in the country, outgoing Vice-Chancellor of University of Lagos (Unilag), Prof. Rahamon Bello, has said.

Bello made the observation in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

“If I carry out a research on my own, I am limited because it is only what I know that I will work on.

“If I am doing a research in engineering, I must bring along a sociologist, a lawyer, a psychologist to look at the output and its impact on the society so as to ensure a high economic value,’’ Bello said.

He said that Nigeria had yet to adequately fund research, noting that no economy would thrive without elaborate research input.

“We have not put enough resources into research to harness as much as we should be harnessing as a big nation.

“A nation that has the kind of population we have should have enough resources to be able to do that.

“You cannot own an economy, either human-based or technology-based, without research.

“Research will look at what is inherent within the system and convert it for the use of humanity to raise economic advantage for the nation,’’ the professor of chemical engineering said.

The vice chancellor told NAN that the National Research Fund had not adequately tackled inadequate research funding.

“If one looks at the percentage due for carrying out the research itself, one will know that we are not there.

“In Singapore, Malaysia, U.S. and U.K., a large percentage of the gross domestic product is used for research.

“If you compare that with what we are putting into research here, you will discover we are not yet there,” he said.

He said that Unilag was doing its possible best in research, but was being hindered by fund constraint.

“In-house in here, we are carrying out research but the level is limited because of funding.

“The equipment is not there just as the facilities. If you do not have constant electricity supply, technological research is hampered.

“I am happy that the government is trying to assist institutions with IPPs, and I can say that we have advanced on that,’’ he said.

Bello added the university created a Research and Innovation Office to assist scholars to carry out research not just for the purpose of promotion but for national development.

“These are the ways things are done to improve on research value for a greater impact on both the economy and the researcher.

“Now, we are attracting international research grants and support from international organisations on equipment for research.

“We were recently interviewed for support for equipment worth over 300, 000 U.S. dollars from one of the organisations in the U.S.,’’ he said.

NAN reports that Bello’s five-year tenure as Unilag’s vice chancellor ends on Nov. 11.

The 11th Vice-Chancellor of the institution came into office in 2012, following the demise of the then Vice-Chancellor, Prof. AdetokunboSofoluwe.

Bello will be succeeded by Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, the university’s Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics).

Youths take leadership, mentorship campaign to secondary school

Youths mostly university undergraduates have showed their commitment to train secondary school pupils to become visionary leaders that will help Nigeria achieve sustainable development.

The youths in their resolve to train and mentor young students for leadership and career opportunities  organised a Youth and Leadership Career Summit for secondary school pupils under the aegis of i-Mentor Education Foundation.

The keynote speaker at the summit, Prince (Dr.) Ademuyiwa Oniwonlu advised the pupils to prioritise their academics and never put their hopes and aspirations on government.

He lamented that greed is one of the major problems that have adversely affected the leaders of this country.

Urging the pupils to develop the  will to change, he said they should look inwards and invest positively in their time and maximize all the opportunities that could prepare them for the future.

He said, “Be determined to succeed, have plans to succeed. Understand the governance of your country and how it is being run. Understand the strength and weakness.

“Nigeria can only be developed if you young ones can be determined to grow up and take up the mantle of leadership and change the country for better. Nigeria need a new developmental plan and you are the ones to actualise this dream,” Oniwonlu said.

The school vice-principal, Mrs. Amzat Mojirola, expressed delight at the gesture of the facilitators of the programme as she said the school will always be open for youth and innovation-oriented programmes subsequently.

She noted that the leadership programme demonstrated that there is still hope for Nigeria to become great.

Also speaking at the summit, founder, Parliarment of Poets, Michael Babajide, Faculty of Law, University of Lagos, ( UNILAG ), said self discovery is key to successful career adding that every child has a been blessed with  specific talents.

Convener, Foundation  for Young Leaders, Akorede Taiwo advised the pupils to prepare themselves for future through valuable trainings before they graduate from school.

President, Chance Foundation, Ibrahim Oladimeji noted that it was very imperative to make effective use of the internet and essentially the social media.

  • 8000 bed spaces for 58,000 UNILAG students-VC

    8000 bed spaces for 58,000 UNILAG students-VC

The retiring Vice Chancellor of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) Professor Rahmon Bello, has lamented the acute accommodation problem for students of the institution.

According to Professor Bello, UNILAG has a student population of 58,000 but is faced with the highest challenge of accommodation as only 8,000 bed spaces existed.

He spoke at the “2017 Distinguished Alumni Awards and Celebration of UNILAG at 55’’ organized by the Alumni Association of the University of Lagos.

“Efforts need to be increased for accommodation of graduates and PG students,’’ he said and thanked the Alumni Association for embarking on a new 500-bed hostel.

Bello noted that the university was a leading one in the country but needed to catch up with other institutions in the continent and the globe.

Accordingly, he said the expectation was for the government to allow alternative sources of funding for higher institutions.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo noted that the government alone cannot sustain funding of universities or even keep them at their current levels due to its dwindling revenue.

Osinbajo collaborated the views of Dr Wale Babalakin, the Chairman of Council and Pro-Chancellor of the University.

“We must ensure that we continue in the great traditions of the University of Lagos.

“This is why I am so excited to see a lot of very committed alumni who want to see to it that our university grows from glory to glory.

“And it is important that we do so because just as the pro chancellor pointed out, government cannot support the universities to the extent that is required, or to keep them even at the current levels.

“A lot will have to come from the alumni and the private sector.

“That is how great universities all over the world are run.

“And I am excited to see that our project today, the fund raising project, is one that has clearly shown the way to go with respect to developing our universities,’’ Osinbajo added.

The Vice President acknowledged that the event was a special occasion for him “and I was determined to stay till the very end.

“Because it is not often that one gets a chance to enjoy the company of many who have either been colleagues or seniors in the same university.

“And in any event it is not often that one gets to celebrate the 55th anniversary of a great institution.

“I want to say that UNILAG has proved time and time again to be not just a university of first choice but also the university of `firsts’; so many firsts in so many different areas.’’

He said it was great to find that one of the awardees, Dr Daniel Olukoya, the Pastor and Founder of the Mountain of Fire Miracles Ministry, was the first to clone genes.

“That was absolutely an outstanding thing.

“The Pastor and Founder of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, (Pastor Enoch Adeboye) was also the first Nigerian to get a PHD in a Nigerian University in Applied Maths and Engineering.

“And I think that there are so many other firsts but I know that the most important thing for us today is to ensure that those firsts do not become the last.’’

Osinbajo congratulated the awardees because their achievements were worthy of celebration and such had indeed emanated from a great institution.

“I would like to thank everyone, for those of us who have managed to stay to the very end and to hope that when we celebrate our 60th you will all be here.

“And we will all be here to celebrate the 70th and 80th and 100th as well for the young ones amongst us,’’ he stated.

Babalakin had earlier observed that the university system in the country was on a cross road as no Nigerian university was rated among the 80th best in the world.

“We have to change the structure of our universities to give them the impetus to do more,’’ he said, adding that even the cost of training per student was very high.

“The estimated cost of training an undergraduate is about N1.2 million per annum. UNILAG will require about N64 billion yearly to run while about N1.3 trillion is required by the FG to run universities per annum.

“The fund cannot be provided by the FG alone and we have to devise creative ways to fund the universities,’’ he added.

The Alumni President, Dr Sunny Kuku, in a welcome address said the awards took cognizance of those who contributed to the growth of the university in the past.

Kuku added that the fund raising targeting N3 billion was to build a new hostel for N2 billion, assist faculty development and provide infrastructure in the Alumni secretariat.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the award recipients included Dr John Abebe of Inducon Group; Mr Mustafa Chike-Obi, former MD of AMCON; Sen. Ndoma Egba, Chairman of NDDC; and Rep. Femi Gbajabiamila.

Others were Mrs Winifred Oyo-Ita, Head of the Civil Service of the Federation; Mr Godwin Obla, a legal luminary; Mr Mutiu Sunmonu, former MD of SPDC; while Mr Oluwaseun Badejo bagged the long service award. (NAN)

Ambode: Govt to tackle insecurity, others at UNILAG, LASU

Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode has said his administration will address insecurity and other challenges facing students and workers of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) and the Lagos State University (LASU) to ensure conducive atmosphere for learning.

The governor spoke yesterday at the Lagos House at Alausa in Ikeja when he hosted the National President of UNILAG Alumni Association, Dr Sunny Kuku, and other eminent members.

He said the state government would complement the efforts of UNILAG management in vital areas, with the objective of improving the learning experience and activities within the university community.

The governor, who graduated at 21 with honours in Accounting from UNILAG, said there was no question about the fact that the institution had impacted value and service to the state in many ways.

He assured his guests that his administration would always be willing and ready to support the institution.

Ambode said: “I am aware that the student population in the university is about 40,000. Beyond the fact that the university authority is providing services to that large population, obviously the kind of services we are providing as a government are also complementing in making the school a favourable choice for people to continue to come and learn in Lagos.

“UNILAG is situated in the heart of Lagos and so it is imperative that as a government we should support in tackling insecurity and other challenges they might have in the institution. We will support the issues that concern students, which we understand the alumni association is trying to address.

“We have this same kind of challenge in our state university on the need to actually accommodate students, to give them a conducive learning environment. It is important that we use our wherewithal to support the kind of initiative the alumni association is trying to do. We will support this and ensure that we use our resources here also to support other areas that the current vice chancellor may think the state government can intervene.”

  • UNILAG, LASU extend Post-UTME registration

THE University of Lagos (UNILAG) and the Lagos State University (LASU) have extended the registration deadline for the 2017/2018 post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation (UTME) screening to Friday.

Both institutions had initially announced closure of the registration portal last Friday.

However, candidates have now been told they can still register until Friday this week.

This is likely a result of JAMB’s directive to tertiary institutions not to close registration or conduct post-UTME screening until the National Examination Council (NECO) released the results of its June/July Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) and they (the institutions) got a comprehensive list of candidates that reflected those who had applied to change their institutions of choice.

The NECO released its result last Thursday.

A statement signed by the UNILAG Registrar, Dr. Taiwo Ipaye, confirming the postponement, reads: “This is to inform the general public that the University of Lagos online registration for the Post-UTME Screening application has been extended to close on Friday, September 22, 2017.”

The LASU statement signed by Mr. Ademola Adekoya Ag. Head, Centre for Information Press and Public Relations, reads: “In order for Candidates with outstanding issues to complete their registration and allow for new UTME Candidates, who have recently changed their first choice of institution to the Lagos State University, to process their registration, the Lagos State University Management has approved one-week extension of the 2017/2018 Online Admission Screening Exercise.”
