Unilag Alumni marks Sofoluwe’s fifth memorial

University of Lagos Alumni Association, Lagos State chapter, has lined up a number  of activities to remember one of its late vice chancellors, Babatunde Sofoluwe.

Sofoluwe, a professor of Computer Science, was the first vice chancellor in Unilag to die in active service on Friday May 1, 2012. He was 62.

Chairman, UNILAG alumni, Dr Lukumon Adeoti, said unlike previous editions where only a day was set aside, there would be a three-day programme that would commence with a press briefing on Tuesday, next week.  Interdenominational service and sporting activities that would involve anout 12 secondary schools will come up on Thursday, May 11, while the following day will feature a lecture with the theme:  “The administration and management of a university in a recessed economy; A case study of Nigeria”, by the Vice Chancellor, Sokoto State University Prof Nuhu Yaqub.

On the inspiration behind the lecture, Adeoti said: “In his lifetime, Prof Sofoluwe loved education a lot. He sponsored about 72 indigent students and all of them graduated.  He was not using university money. He was personally funding them. He began that initiative before he became VC and Sofoluwe felt even as VC he did not need to help himself with the university money to sponsor them.

“Aside, he was equally monitoring their growth. We didn’t know them (beneficiaries) until we started this lecture five years ago, and some of them showed up to tell us the role Sofoluwe played in their education.”

Adeoti, who is from Unilag Department of Geosciences, recalled fond memories of the late VC.

“Sofoluwe was an embodiment of humility. He demystified leadership. He was a man, who trained people for succession and by the time he died, those he trained have already imbibed his culture. Interestingly, most of those he trained here have become professors and DVCs .That is why we never had any issue about continuity in leadership in this university. This man was able to handle both the academic and political aspects of administration.

“We have an association we call Friday Group. Sofoluwe established it. The group is still in existence. We hold meeting every last Friday of the month. Members discuss how to move the university forward.

He said the Faculty of Science, where Sofoluwe once taught, was doing a collection of his works which we would be compiled in a book form and launched during an exhibition exercise that would be part of the activities.

MSSN honours UNILAG, LASU, LASPOTECH first class graduates

LAGOS State Area Unit of the Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria (MSSN) has honoured 35 students that bagged first class and distinction from the University of Lagos (UNILAG), the Lagos State University (LASU) and the Lagos State Polytechnic (LASPOTECH).

The students were given plaques and cash at the ceremony held at Shamsi Adisa Hall at the Old Secretariat, in Ikeja GRA.

MSSN President Dr Saheed Ashafa said the students were honoured to show that academic excellence deserved more prominence than social activities.

He deployed what he called the lackadaisical attitude of the Fedral and state governments towards in academic excellence.

Ashafa criticised the government for not recognising outstanding young scholars during it celebration of Lagos @50.

He said: “As a student-based organisation, no activity can be better promoted than having a scrupulous interest in celebrating academic excellence. Since the society we found ourselves has been grossly engulfed in frivolities and celebration of mediocrity, we are left with no option than to take up the responsibility of showcasing the brains among us who are not deterred by the apparent denial that has taken over the society.

“We are all living witnesses to the mouth-watering monetary encouragement, material gifts and accolades given to the winners and participants of the just-concluded Big Brother Nigeria Reality TV Show. This is despite that majority agree that the show does not only corrupt our moral values but also sends a dangerous signal that academic excellence and hardwork are no more prerequisites to success.

“Painfully, some other shows that promote indecency, laziness and the get-rich mentality among our youths also have sponsorships and endorsements from both local and multinational companies. I need not mention them because we already know them! Yet, academic competitions and excellent performance by students receive peanuts from the society. What an irony!”

Lagos State Commissioner for Home Affairs Dr Abdulhakeem Abdullateef urged the honorees to get to the peak of their academic career.

He warned them not to change the winning strategy, adding: “A successful life does not come by chance. If you put a lot of hard work in what you do, you’ll get the result. You must join in taking appropriate steps so as to make the economy sound.”

The commissioner urged them to mentor other Muslim students and use their knowledge to contribute to the society.

“Do not forget Allah in whatever you do. You can attain nothing without Allah. You are part of the MSSN Lagos success story. Of what use is first class without contributing positively to the development of the society. You have to make sure your impact is felt,” he added.

Lagos State Muslim Community Chairman Prof Tajudeen Gbadamosi described the students as worthy representatives of Islam, who are worthy of emulation.

Prof Gbadamosi, represented by Dr Maruf Animashaun, said: “You have made us proud and do not relent. This is a good feat and you deserve more celebration. I commend the organisers of this event for celebrating excellence”.

Responding on behalf of the honorees, Azeez Ejire, former Students Union President of LASPOTECH, said the award would encourage them to do more.

  • Dead woman not our student – UNILAG

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) on Thursday said the lady who was found dead in a morgue was not a student of the institution.

The woman, Remilekun Odeleye, was found dead last week, nine days after she was declared missing.

It was gathered that the deceased was involved in an accident on Eko Bridge on April 1, while on her way to a party in Lagos Island.

UNILAG’s Deputy Registrar, Information Unit, Adebule Toyin, said Odeleye was not their student.

He said: “Information at our disposal from the Academic Affairs and Student Affairs Divisions indicate that Miss Remilekun Odeleye, {“Miss UNILAG”} whose body was found in a morgue, is not a student of University of Lagos.

“Efforts to reach Miss Medese Dewumoh, a friend of the deceased who posted the news of Miss Remilekun Odeleye’s demise on social media, have proven abortive. We have confirmed that Miss Medese Dewumoh is also not a bona-fide student of this Institution.”

  • Lagos State and UNILAG 13 affair

THOUGH they have been released from prison custody and the state will not be pressing charges against them, the case of the 13 students of the University of Lagos arraigned before a special offences court in Oshodi, Lagos State, on March 31 for allegedly ‘unlawfully invading’ the premises of TVC television studios should be investigated. The charge, arraignment and remand in Kirikiri Prisons indicate the grossest and most reckless abuse of power in recent times.

First, TVC, which should be the complainant, last Monday issued a statement affirming that the students were orderly in presenting their grievances, and left the television premises without damaging anything or acting riotously. After all, the students’ grievances were not against the television station but against their school authorities. So who investigated the alleged offence? Who authored the first information report? Who prepared the charges?

Second, is there no judicial order of doing things in Lagos such that no police officer can arbitrarily trump up charges against anyone and secure the immediate and undiscriminating acquiescence of the courts? Are law enforcement agencies so powerful as to casually and mendaciously cook up charges against citizens and deny them their rights? Doesn’t the constitution mean anything to these state agents?

Third, the Kirikiri Medium Prisons has taken a burdensome custody of 2,979 inmates when its carrying capacity is just 1,700. Disproportionately, out of the almost 3,000 inmates in its cells, 2,634 are awaiting trial. The reason for such abnormality is obviously not far to seek, as the UNILAG 13 affair showed, and as the ongoing abuse of the criminal justice system indicates. Law enforcement agents routinely abuse their powers by railroading citizens to jail without following due process or the provisions of the law. Amnesty International has done a lot of work in publishing some of these abuses.

Lagos should investigate the UNILAG 13 affair and identify those responsible for this mindless abuse of power, from policemen in charge of the case to the judicial officers who authorised the detention order. Their actions indicate deeper underlying disconnections and dangers in the polity that should not be ignored if a far more embarrassing and destructive repeat is not to take place. The lesson must be that those to whom the state entrusts so much power must use them circumspectly and strictly in accordance with the provisions of the law. Anything beyond that is a crime in itself.

    UNILAG disowns remanded students

The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has denied that 13 students reported to have been remanded in Kirikiri prison are not students of the institution.

In a disclaimer published by the UNILAG Information Unit, the institution said the remanded students “comprise of rusticated students and some students from an institution in Ogun State.”

“Let us emphasise here that the rusticated students are requested to apply for re-admission after serving their punishment. Until re-absorption, they are not considered bona fide students of the University,” UNILAG stated.

  • NANS gives 24 hours ultimatum for release of 13 UNILAG students

NANS gives 24 hours ultimatum for release of 13 UNILAG students

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has called for the immediate release of 13 students of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) being held in Kirikiri Maximum Prison, Lagos.

NANS’ President, Mr Chinonso Obasi,  said the union would protest at Kirikiri Prison if the 13 students were not freed within 24 hours.

A Special Offences Mobile Court had on April 1 remanded the 13 UNILAG students in Kirikiri Prisons, pending their bail application.

They were accused of engaging in unlawful invasion of Television Continental in Lagos.

The students were arraigned on a two-count charge of unlawful invasion and disruption of activities and have all pleaded not guilty to the two-count charge.

The accused students are Femi Adeyeye, Toni Aina, Kodri Yaya, Asimi Oladime, Ismahim Olalekan, Segun Okesola, Abdulazeez Soneye, Idris Abogunloko, and Muyiwa Olaniyi.

Others are Toheed Oladimeji, Joseph Akanni, Lukumon Olusegun, and Abiodun Agbeniyi.

The case was adjourned until April 6 for a determination of their bail.

However, Obasi, in the statement, said that Nigerian students would not accept further detention of the students.

“After a painstaking review of the circumstances surrounding the ruling, we have resolved to demand and hereby demand the unconditional release of these students within 24 hours.

“Consequently, we make bold to state that if at the expiration of our 24 hours ultimatum, these innocent students are not released without strings, we shall relocate the headquarters of NANS to Kirikiri in solidarity with our members.

“We also hope that the authorities would use the opportunity of the 24 hours ultimatum to either expand the facilities of Kirikiri prison or release our colleagues, as they can see we are serious and determined by offering them a fair choice.”

Obasi said that the court should have warned the students instead of sending them to prison for a mere protest.

“In other climes what the court should have done was to certify that the suspects are bona-fide students and release them to their school authorities or student leaders.

“ But rather than factor in the extenuating circumstances of their protest, the court hurriedly blunted the proper socialisation of 13 Nigerian leaders of tomorrow,” he said.

Premium Times reported on Sunday that the management of  Television Continental (TVC) disputed police claim that the jailed 13 students of the University of Lagos carried out an  unlawful invasion of the television facility at the Ikosi neighbourhood of Lagos.

“The Management of Continental Broadcasting Service Limited (owners of TVC) refutes these stories and categorically states that TVC has no hand in the arrest of the students.

“TVC did not at any point report or lodge any complaint at the police station,” remarked Abisola Agbaje, the legal manager of TVC in a press release in Lagos.

Ms. Agbaje said, “Truly, the Students came into our premises on Friday the 31st of March, 2017 on or about3 p.m. to protest the “alleged rustication by UNILAG”.

“The protest was peaceful which we have on record and the students left our premises peacefully.”

13 UNILAG students remanded in prison

The police on Saturday arraigned 13 University of Lagos (UNILAG) students at a Special Offences Mobile Court in Oshodi, Lagos, over alleged unlawful invasion of Television Continental (TVC) station in Lagos.

Prosecuting counsel, Effiong Asuquo, who is the Office in Charge, Legal Department of the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Panti, said the accused persons committed the offence on Friday.

He said they invaded the premises of TVC to protest the alleged rustication of one of their students.

The defendants are: Femi Adeyeye, Toni Aina, Kodri Yaya, Asimi Oladime, Ismahim Olalekan, Segun Okesola, Abdulazeez Soneye, Idris Abogunloko, and Muyiwa Olaniyi.

Others are Toheed Oladimeji, Joseph Akanni, Lukumon Olusegun, and Abiodun Agbeniyi.

Asuquo said the students also invaded the UNILAG main campus and disrupted academic activities.

The prosecutor said the protest was a bid to stop the semester’s examination scheduled to begin on Monday.

The police said the alleged offence contravenes sections 168 (1) (d) and 2 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015‎.The students were arraigned before Chief Magistrate P.E Nwaka, on two counts bordering on unlawful invasion and disruption of activities. They pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The magistrate ordered their remand at the Kirikiri prison pending their bail hearing on April 6.

  • Unilag student gets N500,000 bail for alleged gang rape

A 17-year-old undergraduate of the University of Lagos (Unilag), Ugochukwu Daniel, who allegedly gang-raped a 17-year-old girl with others still at large, was on Thursday released on N500,000 bail by a Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court.

Chief Magistrate A. Ipaye-Nwachukwu, who gave the ruling, also granted the defendant two sureties in the like sum after he pleaded not guilty to a three-count charge of conspiracy, rape and sexual harassment.

Ipaye-Nwachukwu said one of the sureties must be a relation of one of the defendants while the second surety should be a civil servant of not less than Grade Level 14.

She said the case file should be duplicated and a copy sent to the State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for advice.

Prosecuting Sergeant Anthonia Osayande told the court that the offences were committed sometime in January at High-Rise Quarters, University of Lagos.

She alleged that the defendant and others at large conspired and raped the teenager (name withheld).

“Daniel sexually harassed the girl with video clips in order to intimidate her. He had sexual intercourse with the 17-year-old girl without her consent,’’ she alleged.

The offences contravened sections 137, 260 (2), 264 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015 (Revised).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 137 provides life imprisonment for offenders.

The magistrate adjourned the case until May 18
