Onazi’s advice helps Lazio to victory

Nigeria international Eddy Onazi was an unused substitute in Lazio’s 2 – 0 victory over Livorno on Sunday in the 16th round of games, but the Super Eagles ace had another way to help the team, even from the bench.

It would have been his 14th Serie A game had he been fielded by manager Vladimir Petkovic, nevertheless Onazi’s teammates put the Nigerian’s advice into good use during the encounter.

Before the game at the Olympic Stadium, Eddy Onazi had urged his teammates to remain calm.

“We have to play with the right head and calmly.

“We all have to stay together, and score more points against Livorno,”said the 20 – year – old midfielder to Sky Sport Italia before the match.

His mates appeared to have heeded his advice, as Lazio won the vital match thanks to a brace from Germany international Miroslav Klose.

  • Lessons from Golden Eaglets’ victory

SIR: The victory of the national U17 side, the Golden Eaglets, at the UAE tournament, is quite instructive in many ways. For one, the Golden Eaglets won the tournament for a record fourth time. Second, the Eaglets created a new tournament record of scoring a total of 26 goals in the competition. Third, the team’s goal -tender, Dele Alapamsu, emerged as the tournament’s best goal keeper while the team’s play-maker, Kelechi Ihenacho, was chosen as the Most Valuable Player of the competition in addition to his winning the bronze boot as the second highest scorer of the tournament.

The Golden Eaglets equally won the tournament’s Fair Play award. Indeed, the UAE soccer event  was a glorious moment in the annals of the country’s sporting attainments.

There are so many lessons for us as a nation to draw from the victory of the Golden Eaglets at the UAE. For one, the victory further underscores the abundant of sporting talents in the country. Since  Nigeria won the first FIFA U17 World Cup which took place in China in 1985, we have gone ahead to win it on three other occasions – 1993, 2007 and 2013. This is aside emerging runners up twice at the tournament. Through the tournament, players such as Nduka Ubgade, Kanu Nwankwo, Victor Ikpeba, Wilson Oruma, Emmanual Babayaro, John Mikel Obi, Celestine Babayaro, Godwin Opkara, to mention but a few, have emerged at the centre stage of the soccer world.

This, of course, takes us to the all important issue: We have just unleashed 22 sporting teenagers on the soccer world. But, what happens to the millions of other undiscovered sporting talents languishing in different parts of the country?

The Eaglets success story at Abu Dhabi equally has vital implications for the Nigerian youth, and indeed the nation at large. It is important for the youth to imbibe the spirit of self-belief by rising above every limiting environmental factor to achieve set-goals. The inherent difficulties of living in Nigeria or being a Nigerian should not provide stereo-typed excuses for failure. All our youths need to do get to the promise land is to keep believing and keep focusing.

Today, individuals such as Segun Odegbami, Chidi Imoh, Mary Onyali, Chioma Ajunwa, Jerry Okorodudu, Stephen Keshi, to mention just a few, command great respect across and beyond the country for their selfless services to their fatherland.

However, it is imperative to dwell on the need for sports administrators across the country to turn a new leaf. It is rather sad that as much as our compatriots in the sporting fields would want to give their all in the service of their fatherland, they are often frustrated by the selfish and unpatriotic attitudes of our so-called sports administrators. Take for instance the Nigerian Football Federation, NFF, which over the years have appeared to act in manners that impede the development of soccer in the country. Is it not particularly embarrassing  that the NFF is reportedly owing Stephen Keshi, the Super Eagles chief coach seven months’ salary?

It took the coach’s lamentation on the pages of newspapers before the NFF reportedly agreed to pay him two months’ wages out of the outstanding seven being owed.  To think that this is the same coach that has returned the Super Eagles to winning ways!

The NFF needs to come up with creative marketing strategies that would enable it  catch-up on the recent successes of the various national teams for financial gains. This is the way it is done all over the world. Going cup in hands, all the time, to beg state governors for fund each time our national teams are on assignment is, to say the least, unprofessional and demeaning.

  • ‘Ojukwu’s spirit yearning for victory’

A  chieftain of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Chief Ben Obi, yesterday said should the party lose the forthcoming poll, the hope of the Igbo would be dashed.

He said Ndigbo had their last hope in APGA, adding that if Anambra State was lost to the opposition parties, there would be problem for the aspiration of Ndigbo politically.

Obi, a senior special assistant (SSA) to Governor Peter Obi on Inter-party Affairs urged APGA members to convince the electorate to vote for the party’s governorship candidate.

“If APGA does not win the poll, the spirit of our late leader, Dim Odimegwu Ojukwu and our brothers and sisters who died during the civil war will not rest.

“With APGA winning in Anambra and other Southeast states in future, Ndigbo would have a voice and we would be reckoned with.

“Our candidate, Dr. Willie Obiano and his running mate, Dr. Nkem Okeke, will continue from where Governor Peter Obi and his deputy, Chief Emeka Sibeudu, will stop,” he said.

According to him, “our aim is to win. This is why we are not bothered about the distractions. We are focused. This is our last chance to maintain the status quo to enable us spread to other Southeast states.”

Onazi: Divine intervention earned us victory

Super Eagles midfielder, Ogenyi Onaziere said the Super Eagles were victorious in Addis Ababa because of divine Intervention.

In a chat with Brila FM, the SS Lazio of Italy Player says the Grace of God was behind their 2-1 victory at the Addis Ababa national stadium on Sunday in the first leg playoff, for the 2014 FIFA World cup in Brazil.

“The Ethiopians really lived up to it; they have good players and had the support of the whole country behind them but it was the Grace of God that we won the match”.

The Match between Super Eagles and the Walia Ibex of Ethiopia saw a filled to capacity stadium in Addis as the Ethiopians came out in full to support their national team in a bid to win their first ever ticket to the World cup which will be in Brazil next year.

The dreams and hopes of the Ethiopians where dashed as they saw the African champions Super Eagles of Nigeria defeat them, coming from behind to take a 2-1 lead in the first leg of the two-legged tie.

Ethiopia will have a tough battle as they will try to overcome a deficit of 2 away goals scored by the super Eagles when they travel to UJ Esuene stadium in Calabar on November 16, 2013.

  • Progressives dance of victory in South-East

Progressives dance of victory in South-East

As Imo State, under the leadership of Owelle Rochas Okorocha, formally endorses the merger of opposition political parties to form All Progressives Congress (APC), Okodili Ndidi in Owerri reports that the success of the progressives dance of victory, tagged Imo Rally, has redefined South-East politics.

The journey to takeover the South-East geo-political zone by the emerging All Progressives Congress (APC), took off on thunderous note in Owerri, the Imo State capital, when eight serving governors and their host, Governor Rochas Okorocha, formarly introduced the party to the people of Imo in a grand style.

The battle-ready APC warriors tested their feet in the waters of Southeast politics with the sensitisation and awareness at the political carnival, simply tagged Imo Rally.

The event which held at the Heroes’ Square, in Owerri, may have been outwardly named Imo State Rally, but the attendance and the behind-the-scene intrigues confirmed that it was the take-off of a seemingly well conceived political revolution aimed at changing the political leadership and political temperature of the entire South-East zone.

According to the eight APC governors present at the glamorous carnival, what happened that day was a mere starter of what is to come in the next few months as the party takes its message of change across the five states of the zone.

How far can APC go in the South-East?

The tumultuous crowd that greeted the unveilling of the APC in Owerri suggests strongly that the party may have an easy ride in the zone. One thing that seemed most obvious at the event was the fact that the people had long become tired of the old way of doing things in politics and governance and are anxious for a change, which the new party is offering in a rather convincing manner.

As early as 7.30 in the morning of that Tuesaday, May 7, 2013, the old and young, women and children, have thronged into the Square to listen to the much anticipated words of hope that have been preached in other parts of the country. They defied the scorching heat and dared the security agents who fought tirelessly to keep them under check.

In attendance were governors Babatunde Fashola of Lagos State, Adams Oshiomole of Edo State, Rauf Aregbesola of Osun State, Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State, Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State, Abiola Ajimobi of Oyo State, Ibrahim Shetima of Bornu State and Tanko Al-Makura of Nasarawa State.

Speaking at the rally, which was also part of activities to mark the Imo Freedom Day celebration, Okorocha noted that his party, (APGA),” is not joining any political party nor is it in any alliance but in a merger to form a new party called APC.”

He said it was a matter of time for the APC to take over every level of governance in the country, adding that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has failed the people of the South-East for the twelve years of democracy, stressing that the entire Ndigbo are for APC.

Okorocha told his teeming supporters that the selling point of the new party is the visible achievements of its proponents, “these my brothers (APC Governors) have transformed their states and are doing more, that is what the new party stands for, it means freedom to the people, the poor masses and the indigent widows, who have been victims of PDP’s misrule.”

The visiting governors, who were visibly impressed by the massive turnout at the rally, took turns to deride the PDP style of leadership assuring that the APC is committed to give Nigeria better leadership.

Fashola who drew a resounding ovation from the ecstatic crowd, described APC as a great train of change, “we have set about a course that is irrevocably committed to giving power back to the people. We believe that Nigeria needs a change and APC will bring about that change.”

Also speaking, Ajimobi, noted that the PDP has gone from bad to worse, noting that the only option left to salvage the nation is APC.

In his speech, Shetima said the exceptional performances of the APC Governors are testimonies of how great the country would be if APC emerged the ruling party and urged the people to support the party for their good.

He said the party was not for self but out to redefine the concept of governance, stating that the party is on a rescue mission for the nation.

Amosun, in his speech, said they were pleased to see that the performance of the Imo State Governor was real and concrete and not a newspaper achievement.

“This is what we want and this is what APC represents. The battle has just begun; APC must succeed for the benefit of Nigerians because there is no better platform.”

Nasarawa State Governor, Al-Makura, said Okorocha’s performance was just the beginning of what the people of the state will witness in terms of development, noting that it was worth celebrating. He urged the people to support the governor, especially now that the right party has emerged.

“You cannot salvage the country with people who are fake, people who are pseudo-democrats,” he said.

Kayode, was emphatic when he said: “a time like this calls for visionary leaders as seen in all the states where the APC are holding sway. No amount of intimidation will deter us from working together to salvage the country.”

According to him, “no one is happy with what is going on, that is why we have embarked on this rescue mission; that is why we have embarked on the freedom journey.”

Aregbesola who held the surging crowd spell bound with his songs and dancing steps, described APC as a bulldozer that will crush everything on its way including the PDP.

He called on the people to say no to unemployment, poverty, hunger, which he said PDP has given Nigerians as a political legacy.

Comrade Oshiomole noted that when he led a protest of workers to Imo State as a labour leader, he met a state with filthy streets dilapidated infrastructure, “but now everything in Imo state has changed.”

He said that was an example of how Nigeria will look like in every area of national life when APC becomes the ruling party. He called on the people to continue to support the governor for more of the good works.

Another thing that was obvious during the Imo rally is that what had remained of the resistance by the PDP in the state caved in after the invasion of the progressives.

Also with the public declaration made by many APGA members, it is likely the party leadership at the national level will have no choice but to fully endorse the merger.

    Yobo targets victory against Lazio

Ahead of Fenerbahçe’s Europa League quarter – final clash against Italians Lazio, Nigeria skipper Joseph Yobo says they need to win the home leg in front of their fans to stand a chance of progressing to the last four of the competition.

Speaking to Fenerbahçe TV, the central defender said: ”I really emphasize this is a historic match for us. Our work continues, looking forward to a great match.

  • LG Election: We are set for victory- ACN

As political activities heighten among contesting parties in the April 14th 2013 election into local government areas of Edo State, the ruling Action Congress of Nigeria, ACN, at the weekend vowed to defeat the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, as it urged it members to massively turn out on election day.

Leader of the party in Etsako Central Local Government Area and a lawmaker in the state House of Assembly, Hon Johnson Oghuma, gave this assurance during the official flag-off campaign of the chairmanship candidate, Hon Emmanuel Momoh, at Oghomere Primary School Ekperi.

While addressing large supporters of the party that gathered, Oghuma expressed confidence that the party’s achievement under the leadership of Comrade Adams Oshiomhole will guarantee victory for the party as demonstrated in the 2012 governorship election in the state.

When asked in an interview if he was not afraid of PDP heavyweights in the local government area, he retorted, “Were they not there in 2007, were they not there in 2012, were there not there in the last election? There is no PDP in this local government; this local government belongs to the Action Congress of Nigeria. Whether you are a chief of staff to the president or not, we are not afraid. We will meet in the field and we will always defeat the PDP in this local government.”

Speaking to the party supporters at the venue of the rally, the candidate for the election, Hon. Momoh, promised to take development to the grassroots, pointing out that the he knows what the people want and he was prepared to provide them with what they want.

Hard work got us our victory, says Ganaru

Baba Ganaru, the Head Coach of Kano Pillars FC,has attributed the team’s victorious start in the 2012/2013 season to the hard work it had put in during the off-season.

“Our victory in the first match of the NPFL’s 2012/2013 season was due to the hard work we had put in during the off-season. We will not relent in our performance, but rather we will build upon it in our subsequent matches,”Ganaru said.

He said that the team had prepared well and that there was still room for improvement.
