  • Osun: The tragedy of victory

Firebrand activist, the only socialist governor in Nigeria, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola defeated his bitter rival, Mr. Iyiola Omisore on August 9, 2014.  I was deeply involved in the Ekiti and Osun campaigns. I saw the thick and thin.  Aregbesola and Fayemi invested wits, energy, brain and vigour.

Victory is sweet, but the investment in it tastes like a bile. Before the elections, I met the two. I saw exhaustion. On one occasion, I met Aregbesola around 11 pm.  He had not eaten anything since morning. There was simply no time to eat; pale but resolute. On another occasion, I met him around 4.34 am on a Monday. I had waited since 8am the previous Sunday. He was attending to endless sea of visitors. By the time I left around 5am on Monday, scores of people were still waiting to see him. Aregbesola visited all the 332 wards, unlike Mr. Iyiola Omisore. He met with all the traditional institutions in the over 300 towns and hamlets. He spent about 3,000 hours in the past six months preparing for the election. On the contrary, the most formidable slogans of Mr. Ayodele Fayose and Mr. Omisore were “I shall be declared. I shall win. I will be the Governor.”

On Tuesday when he raised up the Certificate of Return in Abuja, Aregbesola was lean, emaciated but nevertheless, his face as strong as granite.  The same exhaustion of the flesh, in the build up to the campaign, was not noticeable in his main contender, whose most noticeable trademarks were roasted corns which he munched all through, and the armed masked men that usually encircled him.  I have searched in vain for Mr. Omisore’s manifesto, his plans for Osun people, but could not find one. Yet, this man polled 292,747 votes.

For me, that is a tragedy in this victory. It reflects the heartbreak of a crestfallen nation, a country in perpetual turmoil largely due to the institutionalisation of corruption. More than anything else, Osun has further exposed the catastrophe that has befallen the Yoruba nation and Nigeria as a whole. Aregbesola had 394,684 compared with Omisore’s 292,747. The difference is 101,937 votes. This raises fundamental issues. First, the PDP could have had many elected people if the election was into the state or national assemblies.

Two, how did a man with so huge a moral burden, following the death of Chief Bola Ige, of which he was a key suspect, manage to record such a high figure in the home state of Chief Ige? Again, the PDP has, no doubt, brought Nigeria unto her knees. The economy is in tatters. Hunger and deprivation rule the land. Deceit, a tradition of treachery and sham are the standards of the PDP. The definition of the party as a ‘nest of killers’ has not changed. The party has also compounded the woes of Nigeria by dragging her into the red light district of global affairs. Yet, this rickety machine has a huge population of people hanging on it, according to election outcome. Here lays the misfortune.

While Aregbesola campaigned on the basis of a social-economic agenda, like his counterpart in Ekiti, the PDP had no inspiring action plan. What then was responsible for the ‘victory’ of the PDP in Ekiti and the high votes recorded in Osun?  The PDP’s strength is the criminalisation of the electorate through the cultivation of a cult of voters driven by perks and immediate gains. Apart from loads of rice and goodies distributed to voters openly and covertly, the PDP has set up a phantom financial institution code named “Omo Ilu Foundation,” at least in the South West. This group gives out forms to thousands of people. Agents sent by the APC indicated that beneficiaries were asked to take an oath of allegiance. Also the PDP has been attacking reform programmes of the APC, offering in its place, euphoric material gains for the electorate. This, in itself, constitutes a grave danger to the future of political and economic transformation of Nigeria. For a society exposed to long years of deprivation, perks are likely to be seen as more crucial than superstructure. The PDP is giving institutional backing to this backwater axiom. There is the militarisation of the electoral process backed up with denial of human freedom and brute force repression of the opposition.

After the fiercely contested Osun poll for instance, like the rhythmical movement of a chain of millipedes in the farmstead, a long, orderly crowd of broom-waving supporters snaked through the Osogbo highways. As the crowd milled with glee and unending spasms of joy, a PDP official in a convoy of tainted cars tore through the crowd. Armed masked men that perched like bats on vehicles in the raging convoy released a volley of sporadic gun shots. I remember. We were at a restaurant after an all-night meeting before the election. Five hungry-looking armed men in military fatigue came. Unkempt and in filthy uniforms. They wore beards and slippers, unusual of military men. The ‘soldiers’ had no name tags. One of them had red tattoos on his left cheek. One had the shape of a 12th century wrestler. The other stood like a small bulldozer. Their AK-47s hung loosely on their shoulders.   In military and police tradition, guns, when not in use, should be kept nozzle down. These men kept their guns with nozzles pointed at onlookers. One breast feeding woman had to quit her seat. She quietly walked away into the descending evening cloud. There was naked show of brute force.  After they had finished their dinner-we were all held captive-two of them took strategic positions on the adjacent highway and fired consistently into the sky, hands fidgeting like amateurs. They later left in an unmarked car. People have chilling stories to tell. In the night of Thursday preceding the election, one APC top shot who was my host received a text message that masked armed men were abducting people from their homes in the thickest of night. At the last count, the Commissioner for Regional Integration, Mr. Bashiru Ajibola, said over 200 were arrested in the night preceding the election. In Ekiti, 459 APC leaders were abducted, never to return until after the election. The ‘soldiers’ did not only arrest; they visited homes and collected money meant for mobilisation. Mr. Charles Fasubaa, the General Manager of the Ekiti State Traffic Management Authority, (EKSTMA) was picked from his bedroom and his cash snatched. One leader of APC in Osun was detained all night from Friday until after the election. I was informed that N5million meant for some wards were collected by force from another APC leader in Osun. This apart, I strongly believe PDP rigged the elections in Ekiti and Osun. In the two states, PDP stalwarts were arrested with ballot papers. Where are the ballot papers seized in Ekiti and Osun? Did PDP minimise its rigging tactics in Osun to create a credibility booster? If this heinous plot continues, the other South West states should not expect elections but brutal “war” as warned earlier by the PDP. Therefore, the APC needs real strategic and tactical realignment to deal with a monstrous opponent that has no respect for the rules.  It is infamy that this happened under the nose of Prof Attahiru Jega’s INEC. It is bizarre that INEC consistently describes the elections as free and fair in a malicious rivalry, where in a boxing ring, the umpire watches, as one hand of a contender is tied to the stake. This is my personal submission: gloom is taking its full circle. There needs to be a revolution in Nigeria before we can talk of democracy.

    Residents celebrate Aregbesola’s victory

Yesterday was Sunday, but it did not look like a day of worship for Christians. Osun State residents took to the streets in jubilation over Governor Rauf Aregbesola’s victory in Saturday’s election.

The Returning Officer, Prof. Bamitale Omole, who is the Vice-Chancellor of the Obafemi Awolowo University (O.A.U.), Ile-Ife, announced the result of the election a little after 7am at the office of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Osogbo, the state capital.

Aregbesola, who contested on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), had 394,684 votes, defeating his main contender, Senator Iyiola Omisore of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who had 292,747 votes.

Immediately the result was announced, residents took to the streets, singing and dancing in delight.

Many converged in front of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) state secretariat on Gbongan Road, where they set up a makeshift public address system for a victory party.

The party caused a traffic gridlock on the road.

The story was the same across the state, including Ilesa, Ejigbo, Iwo, Ikirun, Iragbiji, Aagba, Ada, Igbajo, Ilobu, Ifon, Oba-Oke and Oba-Ile.

Some security agents, who drove past the jubilant crowd, made victory signs in solidarity with the people.

The elated residents celebrated Aregbesola’s victory with fireworks at various locations in Osogbo, including 7 Up area, Olaiya Junction, Okefia, Isale Aro and the Nelson Mandela Freedom Park.

Be magnanimous in victory, Mark urges Aregbesola

•Tambuwal, Atiku, Saraki, others congratulate him

Senate President David Mark has congratulated Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola on his re-election.

Mark urged Aregbesola to be magnanimous in victory, saying he needs the co-operation of all stakeholders to improve the state.

He said: “As the Governor, you are a father figure to all and a leader to whom citizens look up to. Therefore, it is incumbent on you to carry everybody along. You must strive to give everybody a sense of belonging, irrespective of religious or political affiliation.”

The Senate President urged other candidates in the polls to support Aregbesola in providing leadership and dividends of democracy to the people.

He said: “I commend Osun people, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security operatives for the smooth and peaceful conduct of the election.”

Mark said the peaceful conduct of elections in Ekiti and Osun states have laid a solid foundation for the 2015 general elections.

House of Representatives Speaker Aminu Tambuwal said: “There is time for everything. There is time for politicking and time for governance. Now that politicking is over in Osun, I urge all stakeholders to tailor their energy towards delivering quality governance to the populace.

“The enthusiasm shown by Osun people in taking their destinies into their hands and determining who would lead them should be applauded. Nigerians should look forward to future elections with the expectation that their voice, through their votes, would be heard and respected by all.”

Tambuwal urged Aregbesola to carry all interest groups along in the running of the state.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) Caucus in the House of Representatives also congratulated Aregbesola.

APC Caucus Leader Femi Gbajabiamila, in a statement yesterday, said: “Aregbesola, for you it is veni vidi vici. You came, you saw and you conquered. In spite of the forces unleashed against you, your victory was sweet, swift and inevitable. On behalf of my APC colleagues in the House and all progressives, I congratulate you as you lead Osun to the Promised Land.”

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar said: “The victory of Aregbesola and the APC in the Osun State election is symbolic. It shows clearly that my in-law is popular among his people. It shows significantly that the people are at home with the APC and the mass-oriented policies associated with our great party.

“The APC is appreciative of Osun people’s decision and I am confident that Aregbesola will initiate more people-friendly policies that will make the APC come out stronger in future elections in the state and beyond. I am particularly proud of my in-laws from Ijesaland. I made a call to them and they did not let me and the APC down. I say a big thank you to them.”

Senator Bukola Saraki said in spite of the pressure mounted by “the unnecessary influx of over 70,000 armed security personnel” into Osun, the will of the people prevailed.

He said: “From every corner of Osun, people came out en masse to send a clear and loud message: ‘we will not be bullied into submission; we will not cower until we get the change that we rightly deserve; and we will remain united in the firm belief that we can rescue our nation from the failed governance of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)’. Despite the clear-cut democratic victory that we have witnessed, we must get back to building strong precedents for our nation.”

Ekiti State Governor-Elect Ayodele Fayose said Aregbesola’s victory is “a plus for democracy” and showed that Nigerians could conduct their affairs peacefully.

He expressed confidence that he would have a pleasant working relationship with Aregbesola.

Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker Adeyemi Ikuforiji said: “The victors in the Osun poll are the people, who damned the consequences to stand firm behind Aregbesola and defend their sacred mandate of re-electing a performing and people-oriented leader that Aregbesola has become. I salute their uncommon courage and unwavering determination.”

Kwara State House of Assembly Speaker Razak Atunwa urged Aregbesola to consolidate on “his purposeful leadership”.

He praised Osun people for trooping out to vote in the face of intimidation and arrest.

Ondo APC chieftain Mr Rotimi Akeredolu said: “The unmistakable message that the people of Osun have sent to Abuja and its hirelings is that no amount of intimidation will affect their determination to express gratitude to anyone who serves them efficiently. Aregbesola is an exemplar. His work spoke for him.”

Mr. Opeyemi Bamidele (Ifelodun/Irepodun Federal Constituency) described Aregbesola as a thorough-bred and simple politician, who understands the feelings of his people, adding: “His victory did not come as a surprise”.

Bamidele said the return of the “unassuming governor” for a second term by the electorate confirmed that his first term met the yearnings of the people.

He said Aregbesola’s victory is a lesson that politicians with a record of achievements would automatically win the hearts of their people, irrespective of the complexity and dynamism of their environment.

Former Aviation Minister Femi Fani-Kayode said: “It is clear from the result that Aregbesola has not only won, but he has won convincingly. I congratulate him and his party on their victory. I commend the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for conducting a free and fair election in which there was no rigging. I commend the security agencies for maintaining law and order and ensuring that no-one was killed or maimed.

“I salute the courage of my friends and colleagues in the PDP for putting up a good fight. I thank my kinsmen for standing by the PDP.”

  • Iorfa charges Lobi players: Beat Sharks

Lobi Stars’ Vice Chairman, Dominic Iorfa has told his players not to dwell too much on their last away game in Ibadan as they shift attention to today’s Glo Premier League Week 22 tie against Sharks of Port Harcourt at the Chief Emmanuel Akume Atongo Stadium in Katsina Ala.

The Makurdi Bombers defeated Crown FC 1-0 to halt their inability to win away from home since 2012 and the players and coaches of the club were relieved to have achieved such feat at the Lekan Salami Stadium, Ibadan.

But Iorfa in an interview with SportingLife noted that a win over the Blue Angels would be ideal to show the victory in Ibadan was no fluke.

The former Super Eagles’ striker also encouraged his players to see the game against Sharks as a must win in order to further cement their bid to end the season among continental chasing teams.

“We should let the win over Crown to be behind us and focus our attention on our next league game against Sharks. We need to win the game to show that our victory over Crown was no fluke but first players must forget about the celebration of our last league triumph.

“We should not be distracted,” Iorfa told SportingLife.

The win takes Lobi to 10th position on the log with 31 points from 21 matches and a maximum point against Sharks may take them to the top five.

Ogun APC sure of victory in 2015, says chairman

Ogun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) yesterday assured members and supporters that it will control the state in 2015.

The party said it would allow a level-playing field for all aspirants.

Its Chairman, Chief Roqeeb Adeniji, spoke at a mega rally at Abeokuta, the state capital.

He lauded the APC faithful and supporters for their support and commitment.

Adeniji said: “Irrespective of the propaganda and lies peddled against him (Amosun) by members of the opposition political parties, he will emerge victorious in 2015.

“We are here for three things: first, to thank party loyalists for their support at keeping the machinery of the party functioning till date.

“Since the conduct of the party’s ward, local and state congresses as well as the attendant inauguration, there has never been opportunity for the elected state party executive members to say thank you. But the rally was to publicly present state executive members to party loyalists to enable them properly familiarise with other members of the party.

“Secondly, to reassure party loyalists that Ogun APC has not and will never lose its grip of the state as being championed by the opposition in their propaganda that they will take over Ogun state from APC and Amosun.”

Kogi Utd 2-0 Supreme Court: It was hard earned victory, says Biffo

Head Coach of Nigeria National League side, Kogi United FC, Abdullahi Biffo has praised his players’ performance for their 2-0 victory over Supreme Court FC in their Week 20 encounter at the Confluence Stadium, Lokoja on Saturday.

Biffo informed SportingLife that his team could not play at their very best due to fatigue they suffered in their away trip to Sokoto mid week.

A goal in each half from Sanusi Pedro and Aminu Abdulkadir made it a losing return for Osho, who was asked to step aside as the Head Coach of Wada Boys in mid-season, now in charge of visiting Supreme Court.

“I didn’t attach too much importance to this match until the blast of the whistle, you know we just returned from a 14 hour journey on Thursday, and that was telling on us today; we could have done better, but I also like to praise the Supreme Court boys, they really pressed us, challenged us all through, we promise our next game(against DSS) will be better as we will have time to rest and prepare,” said Biffo.

Former Head Coach of Kogi United, Fatai Osho also showered praises on his former club despite his new club’s loss to the Wada Boys.

Osho, who said his boys’ display was satisfactory having come together within just three weeks, noted that Kogi United will always remain in his heart.

“It was a fantastic game, I can’t expect anything less from Kogi United, this is a team that is destined and deserved to be at the top, I congratulate the boys of Kogi United, it will always remain in my heart as I enjoyed my stint here, but I also commend my boys for at least holding Kogi United to this extent, this is just a three week old team, we are building a new Supreme Court, and I hope we will get it right,” Osho said.

Chairman of the Confluence State club, Abdul Adama said the players really showed their former handler how improved they are as he remained coy on the club’s promotion ambition.

Adama, however, called on the supporters and fans of Kogi United to continue with their support for the club as each game will be dealt with as they come.

Kogi United have garnered 31 points from 19 games and will next host DSS FC on Saturday in Lokoja.

  • Obasi impresses in Schalke’s victory

    Obasi impresses in Schalke’s victory

Chinedu Obasi Ogbuke, Sidney Sam and Dennis Aogo all shone like million stars as Schalke 04 walloped beat Hansa Rostock 3-0 in a pre-season friendly match.

As reported by the local media earlier in the week, Aogo made his long awaited comeback after a horrific 8-month spell on the sideline.

Aogo began last season on loan at the Veltins Arena before agreeing a permanent transfer from Hamburg in February.

His permanent move came about despite suffering anterior cruciate ligament during training in November, with Aogo making 16 appearances for the club prior to his setback.

With the close-season preparations in full swing, the Germany international made his return to action at the DKB Arena.

The Goals scored by Sidney Sam, Jan Kirchhoff and Dren Hodja ensured that Jens Keller’s side beat FC Hansa Rostock 3-0 on Saturday evening.

“We aren’t as far along physically as Rostock, as their season starts next weekend.” There were no signs of fitness problems though. S04 covered plenty of distance and kept the ball moving about nicely,” team manager Keller was quoted by the club’s official website.

The first half was for the goalkeepers, Rostock custodian Jörg Hahnel twice denied the Bundesliga 1 team, while, Ralf Fährmann had to show safe hands from one or two set-pieces.

Schalke continued to show brilliant combination play. They looked like they could score with every attack, but simply couldn’t put the ball in the back of the net at first.

Keller’s team eventually found their rhythm though, wrapping up the win in a matter of minutes.

Nigerian-born Sam got the just rewards for his good performance, opening the score in 69th minute, driving a free kick under the jumping wall from 18 yards.

Just three minutes later, Jan Kirchhoff doubled the advantage from Sam’s corner, before substitute Dren Hodja ensured the 3-0 result with a brilliant back-heel goal in the 74th minute.

Obasi and Aogo were substituted at the beginning of the second half, while Sam made way for Sobottka in the 79th minute of play.
