    Eguma: It was a hard-earned victory

    Dolphins Head Coach Stanley Eguma has admitted that his side laboured for victory in their Federation Cup round of 16 clash against El Kanemi on Thursday.

    A 44th minute strike by Emem Eduok was enough to take Dolphins to the quarter finals of the competition.

    A defence splitting pass from Ebube Okpokwu saw Emem outrun his marker to slot behind onrushing goalkeeper, David Obiozor in the El-Kanemi goal.

    Dolphins’ Togolese defender, Joseph Douhadji was injured early and replaced by Emmanuel Olowo in the 12th minute.

    Dolphins could have gone two up mid-way in the 2nd half when Emem Eduok ran his marker ragged down the right flank and crossed in for Bolaji Sarkin who failed to connect.

    “We had to work over our capacity to get victory today. It is a sign of good things to come and we believe that we can go on to win the trophy like we have done in the past,” Eguma said.

    Dolphins will next play Lobi Stars in the quarter finals on Wednesday.

  • Danjuma to Jonathan: lead us as C-in-C to Sambisa

    Danjuma to Jonathan: lead us as C-in-C to Sambisa

    Chairman of the Victims Support Fund Committee, General Theophilus Danjuma has challenged President Goodluck Jonathan as Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces to lead the onslaught to the Sambisa forest where the Boko Haram insurgents are said to be operating from.
    Danjuma who spoke on Wednesday during the inauguration of the Committee in Abuja by President Jonathan said the war against terror was taking too long to win and must be won urgently by the Federal Government.
    “One thing we will not do is to go to Sambisa forest. The commander-in-chief will lead and we will follow the commander-in-chief. But seriously, this war must be brought to an end. We must win this war immediately. It is taking too long.
    “I called it civil war when it began; people say it is insurgency. The insurgents appear to be having an upper hand at this very moment. They pick and choose where to strike. They are even holding positions and displacing us. We must win this war Mr. President; we must do so immediately,” Danjuma said.
    While inaugurating the Committee, President Jonathan admitted that his administration owes Nigerians victory over Boko Haram.
    Stressing that evil will never prevail over good, Dr. Jonathan said no effort would be spared by his government to bring the individuals responsible for crimes against humanity to justice.
    But he called for the support of all Nigerians for the security agencies in the war against terror.
    He said: “We owe Nigerians nothing but victory over terror. The life of every Nigerian is precious and we will continue to work round the clock to put an end to this insurgency.”
    “I call on all Nigerians to stand together in support of our security agencies against terrorism. They are working night and day under difficult circumstances. It is unfortunate that when our security personnel prevent 1000 attacks, it is the one attack that succeeds that makes headline news and tends to portray our security agencies as not doing enough. It is part of the realities we have to deal with.”
    “The menace of terrorism has emerged as one of the most complex and challenging problems confronting governments in different parts of the world. Terrorists aim to cause social dislocation, spread fear and panic among the populace and disrupt government activities. But they never win. They have not won in the Middle East, in the USA, in China, in Columbia, in Italy, in the United Kingdom, in Kenya, etc. And they will not win in Nigeria. And, with the support of all Nigerians, we would ensure they do not win in Nigeria. Good must prevail over evil.”
    The President spoke about how it began “on December 25, 2009, when a 23-year-old Nigerian attempted to detonate explosives hidden in his underwear on Northwest Airlines Flight 253, on his way from Amsterdam to Detroit, Michigan, United States”.
    “Although his plan failed and the lives of 289 passengers were saved, it was one incident that finally confirmed that a few Nigerians had finally embraced terrorism as a way of life. Now we could no longer deny that terror has arrived our country with its ugly claws deployed!”
    He added: “The year 2009 appears to be a tragic turning point. Boko Haram, an assemblage of heartless individuals, took it upon itself to bring evil upon our country. They have in their mission, turned women to widows and reduced children to orphans.
    “They have killed and maimed and struck fear into law-abiding citizens. They have destroyed villages, attacked property and terminated people’s livelihoods without a care in the world. They have engaged our security agencies in a meaningless warfare that has wasted unimaginable human and material resources.”
    “The reality today is that, we are confronted with individuals whose minds have been so twisted and tutored to believe they are doing God a service.”
    “For those who take pleasure in seeing innocent human beings in pains, to see limbs being shattered and blood flowing in all direction after terror attacks, we say, you shall have no hiding place. Nigerians will expose you. The people of conscience around the world have rejected you.”
    Jonathan praised the countries backing Nigeria to fight the insurgency and this country’s neighbours for their co-operation.
    He said: “This has given us more fillip and we are confident that the days of Boko Haram are numbered. It is now just a matter of time. Our war against terrorism is gathering momentum. When you read about bombing incidents in the mass media, they may come across to those not directly affected as mere statistics. As the old proverb says, when you carry another man’s coffin, it looks like an ordinary log of wood.”
    “But to us, fathers and mothers, and the families of the victims, they are not just numbers. They are human beings – sons and daughters, uncles, nieces, nephews, brothers, sisters and indeed, fathers and mothers! They are Nigerians!! They are individuals with dreams and aspirations, noble Nigerians who love their country.”
    According to him, the Victims Support Fund Committee will help to mobilise collective efforts and resources in support of the victims.
    He urged Nigerians and non-Nigerians, individuals and cooperate bodies, to give generously to the Fund.
    The committee is to
    •identify sources and ways of raising sustainable funding to support victims of terror activities;
    •develop appropriate strategies for the fund raising;
    •ascertain the persons, communities, facilities and economic assets affected by terror activities;
    •assess and determine the appropriate support required in each case;
    •manage, disburse and/or administer support to the victims as appropriate;
    •address related challenges as may be appropriate; and
    •advise the Government on other matter(s) necessary or incidental to support victims of terror activities.
    Giving the vote of thanks, National Security Adviser (NSA) Col. Sambo Dasuki, assured the committee that the Federal Government would win the war against terror.
    He said: “Sir, you gave me a very difficult task after Gen. Danjuma’s statement. The only thing I will do is thank them for agreeing to serve and assure them that we will win the war.”
    “But there are some very hard choices that would have to be made. We have to been more concern about the lives of a few versus the condition of a few million. The decision has to be made soon. This is not the first time we have been challenged by very senior Nigerians about the need to end this.

    Eguma confident of Dolphins’ victory

    Dolphins’ gaffer, Stanley Eguma has assured that he is convinced that El Kanemi won’t be able to halt their aspirations for a place in the quarter-final despite absence of some of his important players in the Federation Cup Round of 16 tie fixed for Lafia today.

    The Pride of Port Harcourt will play without Ifeanyi Egwin(out on compassionate ground), Fred Okwara(knee injury, Victor Alegbe (ailment) among others but Eguma noted that he still has a good squad to get the job done without them.

    Eguma disclosed:”We are currently battling with injuries and ailment induced absence to some of our key members but we won’t let that deter us. We are going are going to go Lafia like wounded lions to ensure that we beat them. We have played against them before and we know what they can do.”

    Meanwhile, the former U23 coach has also expressed his worry at the choice of the match venue for the Round of 16 cracker adding that he would have preferred a neutral venue that won’t give any undue advantage to either sides.

    Eguma fears that since El Kanemi are in the northern area, the language barrier which his side can’t speak may work to the advantage of their opponents. He however concluded that Dolphins would be ready to face El Kanemi Warriors without any fear on any surface adding that they had played and won Federation Cup matches at Lafia before.

    Aregbesola to Omisore: your lies won’t give you victory

    Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola has said the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate Iyiola Omisore’s lies would not ensure his victory in the August 9 governorship poll.

    Aregbesola, through a statement by the Director, Bureau of Communications and Strategy, Semiu Okanlawon, said Omisore should tell the people his manifesto, instead of  trying to discredit the landmark projects of the Aregbesola administration.

    “We acknowledge his capacity for lies, fraudulent claims, innuendoes and fallacies. We, however, note that this is only the last resort of a candidate who knows the degree of the rejection he has suffered from the good people of Osun.

    “Omisore must take the people for being daft to believe they will embrace his lies. In recent times, he has woven a litany of lies around the projects of the Aregbesola administration such as Opon Imo, road contracts, school reforms, financial engineering, youth empowerment schemes, environmental development projects and others.

    “But what Omisore appears to forget is that the people are at the centre of these programmes, therefore they are the direct beneficiaries. Any attempt to discredit them will fail,” the statement further said.

    It asked the PDP candidate how he intended to explain his almost one year of dubious claims of heavy indebtedness after the Debt Management Office came from the Presidency and faulted his claims.

    “In other countries that revelation and confirmation are enough reasons for Omisore to back out of the contest, having been found not to be credible in his  claims on the so-called Osun debt.

    “But his shamelessness knows no limit. He has moved from one lie to another as if lies are all it takes to win an election,” the statement said.

    The statement reminded the people that all the PDP candidate had done since he began his campaigns was to muddle up facts and figures.

    “He has sought to set workers against the government. The workers, who have witnessed changes in the conditions of service since the Aregbesola administration came on board, would take the best decision by re-electing Aregbesola.”

    Advising Omisore to tell the people what ideas he had to improve their condition, the statement said it is not enough to tell lies at rallies and rely on the proposed militarisation of the state to capture power.

    “This arrogant reliance on the power of the Federal Government-controlled forces to subjugate a people in order to rob them of their rights to choose their leaders and endless lies will not help Omisore. At best, they will make him enter the hall of infamy in the politics of our land,” the statement concluded.

    Uwak inspires Aland to victory

    Super Falcons striker Cynthia Uwak netted twice for Aland United in their 4-0 drubbing of ONS – in a Finland Naisten Liiga week 13 match played on Saturday afternoon.

    The 27-year-old, who has been an ever-present player for the current league champions, netted twice for her side. The Falconets graduate scored the first and last goal (4th and 86th) at the Oulu-lehti Areena.

    ONS’ poor form had also seen them lose in four out of their last five outings. They paraded Nigerian-born defender Juliana Bawa.

    Four minutes into the one-sided match, Uwak opened the scoring at the far post beating goalkeeper, Sini Patsi.

    Despite Aland United’s first half dominance they failed to increase the lead as the first half ended 1-0.

    Twelve minutes after the break, they soon doubled the advantage when Adelina Engman found the back of the net.

    In the 63rd minute, Nora Heroum turned goalscorer in an impressive style when she cut in from the left and sent a powerful strike into the top corner.

    The game was more of a damage exercise for ONS, who couldn’t stop Cynthia Uwak from completing a brilliant brace in the 86th minute, her seventh of the season.

    Victory due to hard work — Abubakar

    HASSAN Abubakar has attributed Kaduna United’s 3-0 victory over bottom placed Nembe City on Match Day 12 to hard work.

    The former Golden Eaglets coach told SportingLife after the game that: “It has been a tough month for us as we have taken 7points from 9 after my loss to Gombe United 48hours after I took charge of the Crocodiles.

    “It was a good match for us as my players took the game to Nembe City knowing fully well that a draw or defeat would see them return the match winning bonus the club had paid them hours to the game.

    “The bonus payment, in the long run spurred them on, little wonder we were able to win by a three goal margin.

    “So, we are happy that our fans are now beginning to smile as the results are coming our way.

    “The players too, have shown better commitments as I have been able to blend them to my own programme, but much still need to be done as we hope to get one or three points on the road too.

    “Nevertheless, we won’t only savour the win against Nembe City but take today (Thursday) to prepare for our Match Day 13 game against Enyimba of Aba who lost to Nasarawa United on Match Day 12.

    “We should hit Aba on Friday for another tough game where we hope to play the game of our lives. The Aba Elephants are a good team but we don’t intend to play them with much respect as we’ll try to match them strength for strengths and skill for skills.”

    With Wednesday’s result, Kaduna United are now placed 18th on the Globacom Premier League log with 14 points.

    “I won’t say it’s either an advantage or disadvantage starting the season on the road but I know for sure that a good performance in the game will go a long way to boost the morale of the players going into the next match.

    “I know the importance of an away win at COD United in Lagos to the psychology of the players so we’re going for the three points at stake. Three points will assist us to consolidate on the home front on our grip on the top so a win in Lagos is key as well as crucial to a smooth campaign this term.

    “Of course, the management has charged us to secure promotion ticket to the elite league for the side, we’ve taken the order as our target in addition to excelling in the 2014 Federation Cup. First, we want to commence the league campaign on a winning note at COD United, it won’t be an easy challenge but we’re condemned not to lose the encounter,” said the former Golden Eaglets coach to supersport.com.

    Gateway United struggled for the greater part of the 2012/13 Nigeria National League Division B that saw Abia Warriors and Crown FC win promotion to the top flight league.

    ‘Victory over Morocco a miracle’

    A member of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Joe Amene, has described Nigeria’s come-back to defeat Morocco at the quarter-finals of the ongoing African Nations Championship (CHAN) as a “miracle”.

    The Super Eagles rallied from 0-3 down to beat Morocco’s Atlas Lions 4-3 during an extra time to reach the semi-finals of CHAN in South Africa.

    Amene told NAN in Onitsha on Sunday that the victory which, he said, he had yet to fully grasp was “a clear Act of God’’.

    “This is an indication that the God of soccer is with us in this tournament. And I rejoice with all Nigerians. I tell you sincerely, the victory was electrifying and miraculous in its nature. I salute the resilience and character of never-say-die within the Eagles,’’ he said.

    Amene, however, urged Coach Stephen Keshi to sharpen the midfield and defence so that the mistakes that gave the Moroccans an edge over the Eagles within a few minutes of play did not recur.

    Also reacting, Rommy Ezeonwuka, Proprietor, Rojenny Multi-Purpose Stadium and Tourist Village, Oba, Anambra, told NAN that the comeback was an indication that God reserved “a special love for Nigeria.

    “This kind of miracle is a fortune only reserved for Nigeria among hundreds of football-playing countries,’ he said.

    Super Eagles Head Coach Stephen Keshi has expressed optimism on the ability of his boys to outrun the Atlas Lions of Morocco in the quarter final match of the ongoing Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) today.

    The Big Boss who spoke with SportingLife from Capetown, South Africa on Friday, said he has studied the video tapes of all the matches played by the North Africans, and has discovered that they are very good in counter attacks and make good use of the wings effectively.

    “We have seen those things and the boys have been told on what to do to checkmate them. We would be able to march them in every departments of the game,” Keshi said.

    The former International said he has advised his boys to maintain a hundred percent concentration and ensure that they take their chances as they come. “I would not want the match to drag into penalty, because penalty is anybody’s game. Though, we have perfected our penalty kicks, but I would not want it to get to that stage,” he added.

    Nigeria finished runners up in Group A with Six points while Morocco finished tops in Group B with Five points.
