  • Ugwuanyi’s legal victory: Matters arising

Recently, a Federal High Court in Abuja dismissed a suit filed by the outgoing Senator representing Enugu North Senatorial District, Senator Anyaogu Eze, challenging the victory of Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, winner of the last PDP Governorship Primary conducted in Enugu State.

Eze approached the court praying that it should hold that a sister court presided over by Justice Adeniyi Ademola endorsed the delegate list his faction of the party used in conducting the parallel primary which produced him as governorship candidate as authentic.

But, in his judgment, Justice Evoh Chukwu held that the harmonised list which produced Hon. Ugwuanyi as governorship candidate subsists; meaning that the primary election which trumped up Ugwuanyi as PDP Governorship candidate for Enugu State is the authentic primary that is duly recognised.

He further noted that, the order of the sister court which Senator Eze relied on to hold a parallel primary was merely declarative and not mandatory. Adding that only one primary was held by the PDP National Working Committee (NWC) in accordance with the stipulated rule in section 89 (4) of the Electoral Act.

The enthralling celebration and happiness which enveloped the whole state on hearing the victory of Ugwuanyi is a true testimony that he is the choice of the people. Let it be said again that since democracy returned to Nigeria in 1999 and as its currently being practiced in Enugu, there has never been any candidate that has enjoyed public acceptability like the candidature of Hon. Ugwuanyi!

The difference is that while Eze found himself in the Red Chamber, Ugwuanyi found himself at the Green Chamber but, like I have always believed, it is not of him that willeth nor of him that runeth, but is of the Lord that showeth mercy (Romans 9:16). In this regard, the people of Enugu State have made their choice, instead of fighting against their decision, he should shelve any plan in that direction and join hands with Gburugburu to bring victory to the party come April 11, because the voice of the people is the voice of God.

We’re strategising for victory, say PDP governors

After the preliminary meeting on Monday night, Governor Babangida Aliyu of Niger State told reporters that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors came to Lagos to strategize for the success of the party at the poll.

Aliyu said: “We have forgotten the formula of winning not only the presidential election on March 28 but others scheduled for April 11.

“We are here to capture the mind of the people looking for positive change. We are happy that people have started appreciating the achievements of Mr President and our great party Peoples Democratic Party.

Ekiti state Governor Ayo Fayose said the target of the two day meeting was to plan for the PDP electoral victory in the south. Our target is southern Nigeria, he said.

Lagos State PDP leader, Chief Bode George and the party’s governorship candidate showed up briefly at the meeting.

Replying a question whether the PDP candidates abide by the rule that government owned jets and vehicles should not be used for campaigning, Governor David Jang of Plateau State said such policy cannot be enforced here because our democracy has not grown to that level. According to him, it took United States democracy over 200 years to develop. We have not gotten to the stage politicians should not use government aircraft and bullet proof-car, he emphasised.

His Ondo counterpart, Olusegun Mimiko defended President Goodluck Jonathan for using presidential jet for his campaign activities when he said: “The President is in power and he is entitled to the paraphernelia of office.

Whenever there was power cut during the programme, Governor Akpabio blamed it all on the All Progressives Congress (APC). “You can see how the opposition- APC is trying to sabotage this programme”, he was fond of saying.

The ministers present include that of Power, Prof. Chinedu Nebo, Dr Akinwunmi Adesina (Agriculture) and Mike Onolememen (Works). The Secretary to the Federal Government (SFG) Sen. Pius Anyim Pius attended.

    Baraje wants victory over Enyimba

New coach of Akwa United and former coach of Enyimba FC Zacary Baraje says he doesn’t have any personal vendetta after his side were drawn against the People’s Elephants in the opening day of the 2015 Premier league season Wednesday night.

Baraje who was sacked as coach of Enyimba after a shaky start to the out gone 2013/2014 season disclosed that he definitely wants to record a win against his former side but noted that there is nothing personal about that ambition.

“I will go there with an attempt to win; I will prepare my team and I will build the confidence in my boys to go there to win. The only thing I see is that they look more prepared than my team because they have been in camp longer than we have which is just one week now but I will still make sure that we go there to win,” he said.

“Knowing the team, I don’t think so much has changes and I think that I can come out with an upset in the game.”

NFF crisis: Giwa faction claims CAS victory

The Chris Giwa-led faction of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has claimed a sort of victory from the ongoing hearings into the confusion that reigned before the last NFF elections.

The claims were made in a release made available to Futaa.com early on Saturday morning, which reads in part: “The substantive matter we filed at the Court of Arbitration in Sports (CAS) in Lausanne in Switzerland came up for hearing. Parties were present including FIFA, the Amaju Pinnick faction and we, the plaintiffs. It was billed for 14th and 15th January.

“Nigerians will appreciate when the Amaju Pinnick faction misled the court to turn down the preliminary reliefs we requested and made Nigerians to think the matter is closed. When the substantive matter came up, we put up our case in the astute belief in the rule of law and the course of non-violence.

“By the grace of God, the board shall meet during the week after which we shall avail the nation of the plans to move our football out of the deep woods of not getting new kids on the bloc.”

The recognised leadership of the NFF led by Amaju Pinnick are quiet on the matter.

Onigbinde sure of victory in Sudan

Former Nigerian manager, Adegboye Onigbinde is hopeful the Super Eagles will overcome the Sudanese opponents, Falcons of Jediane in tomorrow’s Africa Cup of Nations qualifier at the Khartoum Stadium.

Unarguably, a make-or-mar encounter for both sides as far as Maroc 2015 AFCON is concerned as Nigeria and Sudan maintain an uncomfortable third and fourth spots respectively on Group A log behind leaders, Congo and South Africa.

Onigbinde said it will be sad for him as a person if the 2013 Afcon champions failed to qualify for the biennial football showpiece in Morocco.

“We’re most likely to expect a result befitting our performance as well as preparations for the crucial game.

“I don’t know the team quite well at the moment but I’ve always wished them well in their endeavours.

“So I sincerely hope and pray they come out tops against Sudan in Khartoum as well as in Nigeria and go ahead to qualify for the Afcon final in Morocco.

“For several reasons I won’t be happy if Nigeria don’t qualify for the 2015 AFCON as it would be a huge dent on my contributions as well as sacrifices for the development of the game.

“We had it a bit rosy against Sudan in 2001 because our game was more organised then than what it’s at the moment.

“However, we still owe it to ourselves to be concerned and prayerful that Nigeria gets it right in the remaining four matches on the 2015 Afcon qualifying calendar,” said the CAF and FIFA instructor to supersport.com.

Nigeria occupy the third spot on a poorly one point from two matches while opponents, Sudan sit at the base with no point. Group leaders, Congo have six points and second-placed South Africa are on four.

    Odubajo inspires Brentford to victory

Nigeria winger, Moses Odubajo was on target, as Brentford posted a thrilling 3-2 home victory over Brighton & Hove Albion in a Sky Bet Championship match on Saturday.

It was celebration galore in the camp of Brentford as the club recorded their first three home points of the season with the pulsating win.

Odubajo was a phobia to the visitors’ defenders, as he ran at them at any given opportunity and he was the best outlet Brentford had to perform the magic.

The former Leyton Orient ace who is yet to be capped by England or Nigeria gave the hosts the lead in the match at Griffin Park.

Odubajo shot the home side ahead when he slammed home an angled drive after latching on to an incisive Alan Judge through ball in the 18th minute, and Andre Gray scored with thirteen minutes left to play in the first half.

However, the visitors responded back in the 39th minute when Gordon Greer volleyed home at the far post from Danny Holla’s corner which was flicked on at the near post by Lewis Dunk. He ensured the first stanza ended 2-1.

Jonathan Douglas powered home Bidwell’s left wing cross as the Brighton defence was caught napping, and the scoreline was 3-1 in favour of the Bees.

Danny Holla’s strike ensured a nervy end to the thrilling encounter. However, the hosts held firm and earned the maximum points in front of 10089 spectators.

Residents get kudos for Aregbesola’s victory

A non-governmental group, Oranmiyan Support Group, has hailed the Osun people for standing behind Governor Rauf Adesoji Aregbesola.

The group also praised the residents “for standing for the truth” in the state’s last governorship election.

Its leader, Mr. Ayo Akinola, spoke during an interaction with reporters in Osogbo, the state capital.

He added that the people demonstrated their political maturity in the face of what he referred to as “intimidation and reckless inducement by reactionary agents who invaded the state with the evil aim of forceful take-over as they did in the past.”

He described the governor as an Ajagungbade (one who goes to war to get enthroned).”

Akinola said: “If you cast your mind back to 2007 gubernatorial election in Osun, it was really a war of sorts between him and the then governor, who was fraudulently declared as winner in a massively rigged election.”
