Get rid of VAR, says Rooney after FA Cup final

Crystal Palace goalkeeper Dean Henderson was at the centre of attention during Saturday’s FA Cup final against Manchester City.

The England goalkeeper, who superbly kept out Omar Marmoush’s penalty by diving full stretch to his right among a string of fine saves, inspired the Eagles to a 1-0 win at Wembley.

But should Palace number one have been on the pitch to make those vital interventions?

City defender Josko Gvardiol played a long ball over the top for Erling Haaland to chase on to. Henderson hesitated before stretching out a hand outside the box to divert the ball away from the City striker.

As occurs with every decision, the video assistant referee (VAR) checked the incident and allowed play to continue without any sanction.

The explanation given was: “The direction in which Erling Haaland was going made it possible, but not [denying] an obvious goal scoring opportunity.”

Former Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney said on the BBC One coverage that it was “100% a red card” and called for “get rid of VAR”.

  • From Wayne Rooney to Vinicius Junior

After Matthijs de Ligt officially completed his big money move to Juventus, the market of teenage wonder kids switching clubs for huge fees welcomed a new addition. Some of the finest stars in world football were acquired as teenagers, while a recent trend has seen clubs pay more and more simply for raw potential.
Sportsmail casts an eye back through the archives to determine the ten most expensive teenagers in the history of the beautiful game.

KYLIAN MBAPPE: MONACO TO PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN IN 2017, £165.7M

The most expensive teenage signing in history and the second most expensive overall, behind only Neymar to the big-spending Ligue 1 club for £200m.

Mbappe initially joined on loan from Monaco with an option to make the deal permanent. They then triggered that, and have not regretted the move once. In 2018-19, PSG won their second successive title and Mbappe scored 33 goals in 29 Ligue 1 games. European glory is their next target.

JOAO FELIX: BENFICA TO ATLETICO MADRID IN 2019, £113M

Atletico Madrid signed the Portuguese teenager earlier this month for £113m, making him the fifth most expensive transfer in history and second in this list.

The Spaniards met the 19-year-old’s release clause with Benfica, where he made 26 appearances in Portugal’s Primeira Liga and scored 15 times. That won Benfica the title. Atletico, who have tied him down to a lengthy seven-year deal, are clearly confident he will continue to progress with them.

MATTHIJS DE LIGT: AJAX TO JUVENTUS IN 2019, £67.8M

Many consider Virgil van Dijk to be the best central defender in the world. Plenty others suspect this teenager might take on the mantle someday.

In February 2019, he became the youngest-ever captain in a Champions League knockout game, facing Real Madrid at the age of 19 years and 186 days. The Holland centre back made more than 100 appearances for Ajax, who will miss him.

ANTHONY MARTIAL: MONACO TO MANCHESTER UNITED IN 2015, £58M

Martial became the world’s most expensive teenager when he moved to Manchester United back in 2015. The initial fee was £36m, rising to £58m.

Since signing, the 19-year-old has scored 34 goals in 113 Premier League games. Arsenal wanted Martial at the time too and West Ham were even linked this season. This could be a big season ahead for the now 23-year-old.

RODRYGO GOES: SANTOS TO REAL MADRID IN 2019, £40M

Real Madrid has spent £40m on bringing 18-year-old Brazilian winger Rodrygo to the Bernabeu and he is considered a long-term investment.

The forward, who scored nine goals in 41 games for Santos and is said to be blessed with raw talent, may not be a first-team regular yet. Rodrygo is another boy wonder from Brazil who was sponsored by Nike at the age of 11. They figured he would be worth the money, and so do Real.

VINICIUS JUNIOR: FLAMENGO TO REAL MADRID IN 2018, £38.7M

Vinicius is of a similar ilk to Rodrygo. Real Madrid paid good money to bring him in from Flamengo because they see him as the future.

‘I’m honoured to have reached the pinnacle in football, Real Madrid, at only 18 years of age,’ the Brazilian teenager said upon signing. The forward showed signs of promise in 2018-19. Now 19, he will hope to kick on in 2019-20.

LUCAS MOURA: SAO PAULO TO PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN IN 2012, £35.5M

Paris Saint-Germain confirmed they had agreed a deal worth £35.5m with Sao Paulo for Moura, who was 19 at the time, in August 2012.It came as a blow to Sir Alex Ferguson’s Manchester United, who had been chasing him.PSG allowed Moura to stay with the Brazilian side until January before joining them. That seems like ancient history now, with him 26 and at Tottenham these days.

LUKE SHAW: SOUTHAMPTON TO MANCHESTER UNITED IN 2014, £31M

‘I want to continue to progress my career and joining United is the ideal place for me to do that,’ Shaw said upon signing for £27m, rising to £31m.

It has not always gone according to plan but Shaw has shown signs of getting back on track. At the end of 2018-19, the 24-year-old was voted Manchester United Players’ Player of the Year and Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year.

WAYNE ROONEY: EVERTON TO MANCHESTER UNITED IN 2004, £27M

Sir Alex Ferguson’s club beat Newcastle to the capture of Rooney, who became the most expensive teenage signing in the world at £27m.

What a buy that turned out to be. In 559 games, he scored 253 goals, a club record which previously belonged to the great Sir Bobby Charlton.

Rooney won five Premier League titles, one Champions League and a host of other trophies before leaving to return to boyhood club Everton.

RENATO SANCHES: BENFICA TO BAYERN MUNICH IN 2016, £27.5M

Arsenal, Liverpool and Manchester United were being heavily linked with Sanches when Bayern Munich swooped in the summer of 2016.

They got the Portuguese starlet for £27.5m but his career has not gone the way they hoped. On loan at Swansea in 2017-18, he fell out of favour, scoring zero goals in 15 games. His future is still unclear. The plus side is he is only 21 years old, so there is time for the youngster to turn his fortunes around.

  • Rooney threatens marriage with hang out with barmaid

Wayne Rooney’s marriage is reportedly hanging by a thread after he was pictured on a ten-hour drinking session with a barmaid in Florida.

The 33-year-old former England captain was spotted drinking with Vicki Rosiek until 2.30am last weekend in Clearwater Beach, Florida.

According to The Sun, wife Coleen was said to have torn into the Wayne, telling him: ‘You’ve humiliated me again!’

‘Coleen has never been angrier at Wayne,’ a source told the newspaper.

‘She was furious Wayne was back in the news for boozing and cannot believe he has been so stupid as to find himself caught up with another woman again. It’s just so embarrassing.

‘When Coleen found out she said she’d jump on a plane to the UK and take the boys with her and leave him on his own in America.’

The incident comes just weeks after he was arrested for being drunk at an airport in Washington DC.

It is the latest in a string of drinking incidents for the former Manchester United and Everton striker, including a court appearance for drink-driving in 2017.

Rooney began his ten hour drinking session at 4.20pm and had been with his DC United teammates but then was seen separately with Ms Rosiek, 32, who he had met a few days earlier, the Sun on Sunday reported.

Earlier that evening, the DC United striker was seen using a cash machine outside a Hooters bar in Florida.

There is no suggestion anything happened between Rooney and Ms Rosiek.

A source told the newspaper: ‘Coleen has already warned him about his behaviour and will hit the roof over this. He is playing with fire getting into a woman’s car alone with his history.

‘One minute he’s on a pub crawl with male friends, then suddenly he’s moving between other bars with a pretty blonde.

‘At the very least it will worry Coleen to see Wayne drinking and acting this way while away from family.’

Rooney’s marriage was in jeopardy 18 months ago when he was arrested for driving   party girl Laura Simpson, 30, in her VW Beetle in Cheshire while three times over the limit.

He was handed a two-year driving ban and 100 hours of unpaid community work, apologising for an ‘unforgiveable lack of judgment’.

  • Rooney dines with ex-teammates Fletcher, Whelan, Gibson and Alex Bruce

Wayne Rooney is making the most of his spare time during the MLS off-season, with the former England international enjoying himself in Manchester.

Manchester United’s all-time record goalscorer visited popular restaurant Wings along with his wife Coleen.

Rooney was joined by a host of other footballers, all of whom have a connection to Manchester.

Most notably, Darren Fletcher, now of Stoke City, enjoyed much success at United. He was with his wife Hayley Grice.

Another midfielder, Glenn Whelan, currently plays for Aston Villa but started out at Manchester City. He was accompanied by his wife Karen.

Like Fletcher, Darron Gibson featured for United’s first-team. The 31-year-old, who was with his wife Danielle, now plays for Championship side Wigan.

Also in attendance was Alex Bruce, who also plays for Wigan. The defender, a son of former United player Steve, was part of the Red Devils’ youth setup but joined Blackburn after being released. His wife Lucy joined him for the meal.

  • ‘Premier League coaches must show more faith in homegrown talents’

England will be more dominant on the international stage if Premier League coaches put more faith in homegrown players, former captain Wayne Rooney has said.

England did not win a major tournament during Rooney’s 13-year international career, but their first run to the World Cup semi-finals in 28 years represented real progress.

The 32-year-old, who is the leading all-time leading goal scorer for both England and Manchester United, believes Gareth Southgate’s team can build on their success if young English players are given more chances to prove themselves.

“I think there’s more homegrown players, well not more, but homegrown players get a chance and they stay in the team, particularly (in) Germany, Italy,” Rooney told ESPN.

“In England they have a lot of foreign coaches who buy players in, players that they maybe know and play them all the time…

“I think a little bit more faith in young English players will help the national team.”

The former Everton striker also warned England against resting on their laurels.

“Success in football is to win titles,” he said. “It’s like, England in 1990 got to the semifinal, England 2018 got to the semifinal, but you’ll be remembered for the semifinal, not for winning the title.

“You have to win titles. If you want to be remembered, you want to create history, you want to be known as a successful team, you have to win titles.”

Rooney returned to boyhood club Everton last season and was their top scorer, but has since left the Merseyside outfit to join American Major League soccer side D.C. United last month.

“For whatever reason, I still don’t know. I felt I was doing okay, I was top goal scorer (despite) playing most of the season from midfield, so…,” he added.

“But that’s football. And that gave me a decision to make, and I made this decision.”

  • Rooney set for medical with DC United

Wayne Rooney is bound for Washington for talks with MLS side DC United and is set for a medical on Thursday.

A spokesman for Rooney confirmed that the former England captain is due to travel to the US with his agent, Paul Stretford, for what will be a first proper look at the MLS outfit.

Rooney was photographed at an airport in Barbados, where he has been on holiday with his family, boarding a plane for the US.

Personal terms have already been agreed, and while Rooney heads to Washington with the permission of Everton the terms of his settlement with the club – when he has a year to run on a £300,000 a week contract that is paid jointly by the Merseysiders and Manchester United – have not yet been finalised.

Ultimately the decision still rests with Everton to let Rooney leave with senior figures at the club still divided on the issue.

Bill Kenwright, the club chairman, is believed to be in favour of Rooney staying but his influence at a club now owned by Farhad Moshiri is not what it was.

Indeed Rooney is aware that other members of the hierarchy see the benefit of losing the 32-year-old off their wage bill this, and that has been enough to persuade him to consider a move to the MLS when the Americans want him to commit to a £12.5m deal that runs until the end of the 2020 season.

DC United are based in the American capital city, Washington, DC and were one of the founding members of Major League Soccer back in 1996.

The club’s early years were highly successful and they won the MLS Cup – the league’s overall title determined by end-of-season play-offs – in 1996, 1997, 1999 and 2004.

In 1997, 1999, 2006 and 2007, they also claimed the Supporters’ Shield, given to the side with the best record in the regular season. They have won the Eastern Conference five times in their history.

They are three-time winners of the US Open Cup, a knockout competition, in 1996, 2008 and 2013. They also won the CONCACAF Champions Cup in 1998.

  • Wayne Rooney bids Everton goodbye set for MLS

Wayne Rooney has played his last game for Everton after saying his goodbyes on Saturday.

Rooney arrived at Everton’s training ground, Finch Farm, on Saturday morning but did not take part in training which was scheduled for 10am.

The club announced on Friday Rooney was receiving treatment for a slight knee injury which will keep him out of the game against West Ham at the London Stadium on Sunday.

The 33-year-old left at 12:40pm after reportedly saying goodbye to a number of staff and players.

Rooney’s move to DC United is not done yet, says the MLS side’s coach, Ben Olsen. (Video courtesy of TMZ)

It is understood he has played his last game in the Premier League before he is due to sign for MLS side DC United.

On Friday, Everton boss Sam Allardyce said Rooney has not asked to leave.

Rooney is reported this week Rooney to have agreed a £12m move in principle to join DC United before the MLS club’s boss Ben Olson confirmed on Friday there is an interest but the deal is not yet sealed and delivered.

The former England captain has agreed a deal with the Major League Soccer side that could see him move to the USA.

It is thought Rooney, 32, is willing to leave his boyhood club Everton, one season after returning to the club.

“The deal is not done but there is some interest from our end,” Olsen told American website TMZ.

Rooney rejoined Everton in July 2017 and scored 11 goals before Christmas but has not been an automatic pick for Allardyce in recent weeks.

The forward originally left the Toffees as an 18-year-old in 2004, spending 13 seasons at Manchester United where he became their record goalscorer, won five Premier League titles and the 2008 Champions League.

It is understood Rooney has been offered a contract until the end of the 2020 MLS season. The US transfer window does not open until July.

  • Wayne and Coleen building £20million retreat

Wayne and Coleen building £20million retreat

Wayne and Coleen are  working towards a perfect future and from all indications an exclusive abode is considered by the couple as one of the essentials of a new beginning. They  reconciled their marriage just in time for Christmas – and the arrival of their fourth child.

And now Wayne and Coleen Rooney have set about building the perfect family retreat in the Cheshire countryside, costing an estimated £20million, which will be ready for their fresh start in 2018.

New areal pictures of the 40-acre site show the beginnings of two man-made fishing lakes, an underground garage and a paddock with horse stables.

The vast landscape was pictured during the first UK snowfall last weekend, but shows the construction on the ground floor is well under way.

According to The Mirror, the house will have six bedrooms, big enough to accommodate their fourth arrival this February 2018 as well as their three young sons, Kai, Klay and Kit.

The mega-mansion is also believed to house a spa with a plunge pool, as well as a cinema room on site and an orangery and they will be able to keep up to 15 horses.

MailOnline previously reported that a snooker room, wine cellar and football pitch are also being constructed on the sprawling pile.

The ground floor will be where the huge indoor swimming pool surrounded by a glass pavilion and a hot tub, plunge pool and steam room will be housed.

Guests will be able to opt for ‘his’ or ‘hers’ changing rooms, and after a dip they can pop outside to the extensive patio and landscaped gardens.

Upstairs will feature six bedrooms, all with en-suites, with the master bedroom also boasting a dressing room.

The property has two floors as well as a subterranean basement, which is home to the steam room, plunge pool, hot tub, gym, cinema room with ten seats, wine cellar and snooker room with bar.

After months of speculation that her marriage was on the rocks, Coleen released a defiant statement via Facebook last month, confirming that they were due to work on it and stay together.

Coleen said: ‘It’s my decision …. do I love Wayne … yes I do. If I didn’t then I wouldn’t be trying to make it work.

‘I know I would be fine on my own, with just me and my children, but I don’t want to live like that, I want to try and continue our marriage and live as a family, because that’s what I want to do.

War is over! Rooney Coleen bury the hatchet

Wayne Rooney hinted he had made amends with his pregnant wife when he shared a sweet snap of son Kai at the family home on Thursday.

And amid reports the couple are getting back on track, wife Coleen Rooney, 31, was spotted on a coffee run on Friday morning, covering her bump in an all-black ensemble.

Her appearance after she sparked further speculation she has forgiven her embattled husband, 32, for his night out with party girl Laura Simpson, sharing a sweet family photo collage to Twitter on Thursday to celebrate Kai’s eighth birthday, in which Wayne featured prominently.

Cutting a casual figure, Coleen slipped into a pair of black leggings, covering her blossoming bump in a matching oversized sweater as she went for her post-school run coffee on Friday.

The expectant mother-of-three put on a serious display, flashing her keyring embellished with a picture of herself with a young Kai.

Rooney spent his 32nd birthday alone last week as he served community service for drink-driving in the UK, while Coleen enjoyed a sun-drenched getaway to Barbados.

At the beginning of the week Coleen offered her first hint that she’s forgiven Wayne after reportedly sharing snaps of him cuddling up to their kids in bed upon her return home.

Sources according to MailOnline claimed the photo was a sign that Coleen has finally forgiven Wayne after he was caught driving home with party girl Laura Simpson in Cheshire in September.

Rooney party girl renames him ‘Mr Shrek’

PARTY girl Laura Simpson called Wayne Rooney “Shrek” on Twitter and said he was hung like an ogre.

She also claimed the Everton striker had “tekkers” – slang for technique – after they were caught together in her VW Beetle.

After early denials Laura, 29, claimed she and Rooney had “kissed and cuddled” following his arrest for drink-driving at 2am on September 1.

And in a late-night Twitter exchange with a fan of Rooney’s former club Manchester United, she has now appeared to suggest their liaison could have gone to extra time had police not swooped.

Wayne Rooney’s party girl Laura Simpson holidays yet again on Spanish beach, dressed in a skimpy black swimsuit flaunting her peachy posterior and robust cleavage.

When the fan asked Laura why she got to grips with Rooney, she replied: “Shrek has got tekkers.’’

The fan then wrote: “Was he hung like a hamster or an ogre?’’

    Laura replied: “Like an ogre.’’

She later deleted the tweets and apologised, saying they were posted by a pal who got hold of her unlocked phone.

Rooney admitting drink-driving, and was banned for two years and fined £320,000 by his club.

Rooney wife Coleen is currently on holiday in Mallorca.

Meanwhile Everton’s record of eight points from nine games was the third-worst in their Premier League history. Only in 2005-06 (11) and 1994-95 (15) have they had a worse record in the same period.

They had the same record through nine games in 1997-98, when they finished 17th, avoiding relegation on goal difference, and in 1995-96, when they achieved a sixth-place finish.

Koeman’s reign lasted 47 Premier League games. Only Howard Kendall (38) and Mike Walker (31) experienced shorter stays in charge.

Only David Moyes has a better winning percentage (41) and points-per-game record (1.50) in the Premier League as Everton manager than Koeman (40 percent and 1.47 points per game).

However, Roberto Martinez is the Everton Premier League manager with the best record through the first 47 games. Martinez amassed 84 points (1.79 per game) with a winning percentage of 51 compared to 69 points for Koeman.

Koeman’s record at Everton was significantly worse than in his time at Southampton. With the Saints, Koeman collected 1.62 points per game in the Premier League with a win percentage of 47.4.
