Driving  offence : Rooney begins community service

Wayne Rooney has started his community service painting benches at a garden centre for disabled adults near his £6million home.

The Everton striker was ordered to undertake 100 hours unpaid work after being caught drink-driving.

The married father-of-three was driving 29-year-old Laura Simpson’s car back to her house.

The former England captain had met the office worker in a bar in Wilmslow while his pregnant wife Coleen was on holiday with their three children.

When stopped by police at 2am, over a faulty tail light, he had 104mcg of alcohol per 100ml of breath making him three times over the limit.

Rooney admitted drink driving in court last month.

Conveniently the garden centre where he is undertaking his service is just three miles from his luxurious £6million property in Prestbury, Cheshire.

But despite the close proximity, the £150,000-a-week star was chauffeured to his shift.

At 8.40am this morning, he began his shift wearing a blue jacket, blue hoodie, matching blue bottoms and black Nike trainers.

The garden centre is the same venue where former Manchester United team mate Carlos Tevez was ordered to work after he was banned four years ago.

Rooney retired from playing for his country earlier this year and seized the chance to clock up some hours community service while the Premier League is on hold.

Once there, Rooney, 31, put on a green zip-up fleece, worn by colleagues and spent all his time inside

It is understood he has been given routine maintenance tasks as disadvantaged adults around him learn new skills, including plant potting, and woodwork.

He said: ‘I accept the court’s decision and hope I can make amends through my community service.’

He was arrested in the early hours of September 1 as he drove a VW Beetle belonging to Laura Simpson, 29, in the passenger seat.

The news came as a shock to his wife Coleen, who is expecting their fourth child.  She has not been seen with her wedding ring since.

Harry Kane ready to lead Three Lions

Harry Kane says he feels like one of England’s leaders as he bids to be named the permanent replacement for Wayne Rooney as captain.

The Three Lions are yet to appoint a full-time successor since Rooney retired from international football in August, with manager Gareth Southgate having rotated the captaincy in recent matches.

Kane was skipper for England’s double-header against Scotland and France in June, before handing over the armband to Jordan Henderson for last month’s games with Malta and Slovakia.

Gary Cahill, Joe Hart and Eric Dier have also been cited as candidates for the role vacated by Rooney, holder of the national goalscoring record.

Kane hopes to be named captain again for England’s final World Cup qualifiers against Slovenia and Lithuania, with leading the country at next year’s tournament in Russia the ultimate prize.

“Yes, I’ve had the armband and it was a very proud moment,” Kane told reporters when asked if he was targeting the captaincy.

“I feel like one of the leaders in the team.

“But Gareth Southgate has said he is going to take his time and we do have plenty of leaders.

“My focus has to be on scoring goals and continuing this form into October. That’s the most important thing – do your talking on the pitch.

“Whoever Gareth picks as captain, the team will get behind him.

“We have still not qualified and we have to win the game on Thursday [against Slovenia], and that makes it easier on Sunday [against Lithuania].”

Kane is coming off a September that saw him score 13 goals for club and country, a return that matched the best-ever calendar months produced by Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Rooney avoids broken hand, fit to face Burnley

Everton forward Wayne Rooney has been passed fit to face Burnley after a scan ended fears he had broken his hand

Rooney played the whole match and scored as Everton were held to a 2-2 Europa League draw against Apollon Limassol at Goodison Park on Thursday.

But the former England striker had to be treated with bandages and take painkillers in the first half after suffering what looked like a nasty hand injury when he was stood on by an opponent.

Tests, though, have confirmed no serious damage has been caused, so Rooney is in contention for Sunday’s home match against Burnley, with the status of defensive duo Michael Keane (foot) and Phil Jagielka (hamstring) less certain.

“Wayne had a scan on his hand this morning and it is fine – there is no fracture,” Koeman said at his pre-match media conference.

“I hope to have some positive news on Saturday – we need to make a decision about Michael Keane and Phil Jagielka whether they are available for Sunday, but they are doubtful.

“It’s always important to have everybody available, because all these players are quality, experienced players and that’s what you need in a difficult situation.”

On midfielder James McCarthy’s recovery from a knee injury, Koeman added: “He needs game time first in the Under-23s to play – that’s how players need to come back after a long time being injured.”

Everton are looking to lift spirits after the Apollon draw, which left them bottom of Group E and followed a difficult start to the Premier League campaign that has left Koeman under pressure.

“I’m too long in this job to lose my confidence, but yes, I’m worried about the situation and how we can turn it around,” said the Everton boss.

“I have enough confidence to be the same manager as I was for the past six or seven years, when I was successful

“Football can be strange, football can be difficult, but Thursday can’t be compared to Sunday because the opponent is totally different

“If we win maybe we are back, but if we don’t win Monday will be totally different and that is football

“Maybe [the players’ fear came from] the pressure to win the game. We try to analyse everything, but we are human people.

“The situation [in the league] was possible to expect when we knew all the fixtures in the beginning

“You can see it as really negative for our position in the Premier League, but you can lose against Chelsea, Tottenham and Man United. We played 10 more games and we lost one of 10. It’s not all so negative.”

  • Wayne Handed 2-year Driving Ban

    Wayne Handed 2-year Driving Ban

Wayne Rooney on Monday has been banned from driving for two years.

The Everton player who admitted to drink driving in court was also ordered to perform 100 hours of unpaid work within 12-month.

The 31-year old was also ordered to pay £170 when he appeared at Stockport Magistrates’ Court.

During proceedings Rooney’s legal team asked District Judge John Temperley to consider not imposing a community order because of his ongoing charitable work.

However the judge said he was “not convinced” that imposing a large fine “would have the same effect”.

Rooney was also told to pay £85 prosecution costs and a victim surcharge for the same amount.

The court heard Rooney was almost three times the legal limit.

A breathalyser test showed his alcohol level was 104 microgrammes in 100 millilitres of breath.

The drink-drive limit in England and Wales is 35 microgrammes per 100 millilitres of breath.

Meanwhile, the former England captain has apologised for his “unforgivable lack of judgement” after pleading guilty to a drink-driving charge.

Rooney said in a statement released to Press Association Sport: “Following today’s court hearing I want publicly to apologise for my unforgivable lack of judgement in driving while over the legal limit. It was completely wrong.

“I have already said sorry to my family, my manager and chairman and everyone at Everton FC. Now I want to apologise to all the fans and everyone else who has followed and supported me throughout my career.

“Of course I accept the sentence of the court and hope that I can make some amends through my community service.”

Recall that Rooney was stopped by police when driving a black Volkswagen Beetle in Wilmslow, Cheshire, at 2am on September 1.

Rooney upbeat ahead Goodison Park return

Wayne Rooney is relishing the prospect of playing in Europe for Everton as he prepares for an emotional Goodison Park homecoming on Thursday night.

The striker is expected to make his second competitive debut for the Toffees when they take on Slovakian side MFK Ruzomberok in the UEFA Europa League third qualifying round, first leg.

Rooney, 31, joined Everton at the age of nine but didn’t get the opportunity to play for them in Europe during his two seasons in the first team between 2002 and 2004

Now he’ll get his chance and admitted that if Everton were to progress and win the competition, it would be a better feeling than winning it with Manchester United last season.

‘Something I always wanted to do was play in Europe with Everton,’ he told Everton’s official website.

‘I was a bit disappointed not to do that before but now I’ll have a chance. Obviously I won the trophy last year so I’m hoping as a club we can go far and, you never know, try to win it. It would be even better.

‘The first game back will be an emotional day for me and I’m looking forward to it.

‘Overall, I’m looking forward to the season, hopefully getting back playing regularly, and trying to help this club move forward.’

Rooney has already looked sharp in the two friendly matches he has been involved in since his free transfer back to Goodison Park from United.

He scored in both the 2-1 win over Kenyan champions Gor Mahia in Tanzania and in the 1-1 draw with Belgian side Genk on Saturday.

Now he is set to make his first appearance in Everton colours at Goodison in a competitive match since May 2004.

‘You always get that feeling when you’re walking out the tunnel so to actually do it again in an Everton shirt will be a special moment for me.

‘It’s always been a special place to come and play, even when I’ve been on the opposing side.

‘It’s been a positive start back here. It’s great that we got so many players in early as we’ve been able to work together for nearly a month before the first game, get to know each other and how everyone plays. It’s great to see and great to be a part of.’

Rooney gets warm welcome in Dar Es Salaam

Everton have touched down in Tanzania ahead of their first pre-season friendly, with Wayne Rooney and Co welcomed by hoards of supporters as they arrived in the fishing village of Dar Es Salaam.

Rooney was greeted by locals after leaving the team bus, with the former Manchester United striker set to make his first appearance in a Toffees shirt since May 2004 against Gor Mahia on Thursday.

The 31-year-old England captain will look to build up his fitness with a solid outing against the little-known Kenyan club, and Ronald Koeman’s new-look squad were treated to a warm welcome as they embarked on the team hotel.

Yannick Bolasie, who is expected to remain sidelined with a serious knee injury until the end of the year, has traveled  with the squad for the friendly – which is designed to which celebrate the club’s new main partnership with African gaming giant SportPesa.

Bolasie, who is an international from neighboring DR Congo, was overwhelmed by his reception as dozens of supporters who both live and have travelled across the divide showed their appreciation for the pacey winger.

The former Crystal Palace player has travelled as part of a team-building exercise, and he joined in with the feel-good factor surrounding the trip as he danced with jubilant fans upon arrival.

News of Bolasie’s presence has led to many Congolese supporters descending on Tanzania’s east coast via all modes of transport, with flags bearing the 28-year-old’s name visible amid a sea of colour in Dar Es Salaam.

The Toffees have already begun fulfilling an array of commitments off the pitch including several cultural experiences, with players visiting a local school later on Wednesday.

Leighton Baines, Bolasie, Ademola Lookman and Idrissa Gana Gueye attended a school which caters for the many deafblind

children in Tanzania, of which there are an estimated 18,400 in the East African country.

Club captain Phil Jagielka wasted little time getting familiar with Tanzanian cuisine as he and Dominic Calvert-Lewin took part in a cooking challenge, while Muhamed Besic, Tom Davies and Michael Keane spent the afternoon with a local albino football team.

Opponents Gor Mahia earned the right to face the Blues at the 60,000-capacity Tanzania National Main Stadium after winning the inaugural SportPesa Super Cup.

Ross Barkley is not part of the 25-man squad to have travelled with the club announcing that the 23-year-old will be treated at home having suffered a groin injury

Wayne Rooney has arrived at Everton’s training ground for a medical ahead of his proposed free transfer from Manchester United.

Rooney was pictured turning up at Finch Farm in his Land Rover on Saturday afternoon as he prepares to seal a move back to Merseyside.

The 31-year-old is set to complete an emotional return to Goodison Park, 13 years after leaving for United in a £26.5million deal.

Sportsmail understand that Rooney has agreed to a salary reduction of around 50 per cent as part of the deal taking him back to his boyhood club.

United have agreed to pay a portion of their captain’s wages, which amount to upwards of £300,000 a week, to facilitate the transfer.

His wages back on Merseyside are still expected to total around the £150,000 a week mark, which would make him comfortably the highest earner at Everton.

Rooney left Everton for United as an 18-year-old in the summer of 2004 after progressing through the Toffees’ youth system.

Rooney has netted 253 goals in total during his 13 years at Old Trafford – which saw him claim five Premier League titles, a Champions League trophy and an FA Cup.

He would become Everton’s sixth major signing of the window following Michael Keane, Jordan Pickford, Sandro Ramirez, Davy Klaassen and Henry Onyekuru.

They ended their season on a high after winning the Europa League.

And the Manchester United players were again in a celebratory mood as they attended the star-studded wedding of defender Phil Jones and wife Kaya Hall in Nether Alderley, Cheshire, on Friday.

Wayne Rooney and his glamorous wife Coleen were among the famous guests seen arriving at St Mary’s Church for the romantic ceremony.

Looking super glam for the occasion, Coleen Rooney sported a black one shoulder midi dress featuring a ruffle hem teamed with a box clutch and strappy heeled sandals.

Wayne, 31, looked dapper in a navy suit and tie as he arrived with Coleen, 31, who opted for a stylish one-shoulder dress for the occasion.

Newlywed Kaya meanwhile looked every inch the beautiful bride in a stunning lace ivory gown as she left the church hand in hand with news husband Phil.

Wearing her chestnut brown locks up in an elegant up ‘do, she showed off her radiant complexion, while her lips accentuated with a rose-tinted lipstick.

The happy couple left in a white vintage car as the guests headed to the reception after the church ceremony.

Phil and Kaya announced they were set to get married in December, with Kaya posting on Twitter: ‘Christmas Eve Service at the Church we’re getting married at…’

The pair, who live in Alderley Edge, have been together for several years, with Kaya attending the Manchester United Christmas party back in December.

Other United footballers in attendance included Phil’s fellow defenders, Chris Smalling and Luke Shaw.

Goalkeeper Sam Johnstone and former united player Jonny Evan also attended the intimate wedding on Friday.

Phil Jones was not the only Red Devils player to get married this week, with Matteo Darmian marrying his long-term fiancee Francesca Cormanni in a lavish wedding ceremony in Italy on Wednesday.

Sigurdsson equaliser damages Manchester united top four hope

Manchester United suffered a big blow to their top-four hopes as Swansea City held them to yet another draw at Old Trafford.

Gylfi Sigurdsson free kick cancelled out Wayne Rooney penalty to secure a 1-1 draw for Swansea City at Old Trafford that damages Manchester United’s top-four ambitions.

Rooney swept home from the spot moments before half-time after Marcus Rashford had gone to ground which was a little bit controversial with the replay showing that there was  no contact from Lukasz Fabianski, but Swansea’s set-piece maestro stole a point that could wreck the hosts’ hopes of qualifying for the Champions League through domestic competition.

Swansea, who are now just two points adrift of safety in 18th place, looked the brighter of the teams for much of the first half but chances were limited before the penalty incident towards the end of the half time.

  • Everton boss Koeman wants Rooney back

Everton boss Koeman wants Rooney back

Everton manager Ronald Koeman has opened the door for Wayne Rooney to return to Goodison Park.

Manchester United’s record goal scorer has been linked with a move back to his boyhood club, having struggled to hold down a regular place under Jose Mourinho.

Rooney’s agent was in China this month, assessing the player’s options, but the 31-year-old last week issued a statement insisting he was staying at Old Trafford.

However, his long-term future remains in doubt, and Koeman is ready to make a move in the summer to bring Rooney back to where it all began.

“I believe that Wayne Rooney is still playing at a high level,” the Dutchman told Sky Sports. “I think he made a good choice to stay at Manchester United and in the Premier League because he has still two or three years in front of him to play on a high level.

“What will happen at the end of the season? I don’t know but in my opinion he is one of the players who can make Everton stronger.

“It’s all about what the player likes, what Manchester United needs to do, and we are not involved in that project.

Wayne Rooney has scored two Premier League goals this season.

“But every player that we at Everton think can make the team stronger is welcome to Everton.”

Rooney progressed through the ranks in the Toffees’ academy, having joined at the age of nine, and his rise accelerated in his mid-teens as he moved from the youth side to become a first-team regular.

He made his debut aged 16 on the opening day of the 2002-03 campaign against Tottenham and six weeks later became Everton’s youngest scorer with two goals against Wrexham in the League Cup. He scored his first Premier League goal a fortnight later,a last-minute winner against Arsenal five days before his 17th birthday.

Everton were unable to hang on to Rooney when United came in the summer of 2004 but there is now a prospect of him making the move back to Merseyside.
