  • My wife starves me of sex, says pastor accused of raping housemaid

My wife starves me of sex, says pastor accused of raping housemaid

A 65- year old pastor, Francis Ogwu, has been arrested for allegedly defiling his seven-year-old housemaid in Awka, Anambra State.

The suspect, a native of Imo State, was nabbed after the alarm raised by concerned residents of the area.

Ogwu, General Overseer of Jesus House of Joy Church, Awka, has lived with his wife and children in the state for more than 30 years.

The victim, while narrating her ordeal in the office of the Commissioner for Women and Social Welfare, Ify Obinabo, said the suspect, who is her guardian, has had carnal knowledge of her three times.

“He usually gives me money ranging from N500 to N1,000 after each experience. Sometimes, his wife accused me of snatching her husband from her.

“What prompted my leaving the house was the repeated beating I received from the daughter over irrelevant issues,” she said.

On her part, the victim’s mother, Destiny Nwabueze, a native of Awka, said she handed her daughter over to the Ogwus’ family following a long standing relationship they had enjoyed.

She however said she was shocked when her daughter returned to her with the ugly experience.

“When I invited the Oga (boss) to my house, he denied the allegations. That was why I raised the alarm that attracted other persons,” she added.

The suspect, during interrogation, denied allegations of penetration leveled against him by the victim, saying “I only fingered the girl once.”

Asked why he defiled the innocent child, the suspect said: “I was tempted because my wife usually gives excuses that she is fasting whenever I want to have quality time with her.”

Reacting, the Commissioner vowed to ensure the victim got justice.

She however advised women to be vigilant and stop starving their husbands of sex as that could lead to bad behaviour from some men.

She further charged women to always protect their minor daughters, adding that defilement was no longer excusable in the state.

Meanwhile, family members of the suspect have stormed the commissioner’s office to plead for pardon. But they were referred to the police where the matter has been transferred.

  • Lawyer, wife abandon home over ‘threat to life’

Activist-lawyer Richard Adekanmi Komolafe, his wife, Susanna and children have alleged threat to their lives  by some hoodlums suspected to be land grabbers.

They have abandoned their Mushin, Lagos home and are now in hiding for fear of their lives.

They alleged incessant attacks by hoodlums.

Adenike, through her lawyer, Morenike Adeagbo, has approached the Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIGP) to save them from the gun-toting hoodlums who have been tormenting them.

In a petition to the AIGP,  Zone II, Onikan. Lagos, titled “Threat to life of Mrs Komolafe, Adenike Sussanah and her children”, they urged the Police to investigate the matter and ensure that justice is done.

“Our client life is in danger of being killed by unknown gunmen who have been trailing her about from her office in Mushin to her house within the area and even outside her domain.

“Sussanah’s husband, Richard, who is a human right activist has been fighting some mafia land grabbers in Lagos State and its environs which at times always culminated in him instituting some of the matters in court.”

It was gathered that trouble started for the Komolafe family when “on January 15, 2018 Richard instituted another matter at the Federal High Court, Lagos, suit number FHC/L/CS/2018.

“The suit was instituted like all other suits that her husband always had to deal with.

“But this time around, the people involved are much more powerful in the underworld business of killing without mercy, kidnapping for ransom, random land grabbing from  innocent  and rightful owners.”

The petition stated that following the filing of the suit in court by Richard, his wife started receiving phone calls from unknown persons.

They asked her to convince her husband to back out because the land involved is located in the prime area of Ilupeju, Lagos where prices of choice property are high.

“The anonymous calls came with threats of being kidnapped with her children in order to persuade her husband from not proceeding with the matter in court, but this did not yield any positive result,” the petition states.

When the “suspected land grabbers” could not get Richard to withdraw the suit, they turned on his wife and children  on whom they unleashed violence  at every opportunity, in an attempt to get her to persuade her husband to do their bidding.

When judgment was to be delivered in the matter last December, the husband was warned not to appear in court and threatened with violence in the event of losing the matter.

It said Richard filed complaints on the threat to his life and that of his family at Ilupeju Police Station, seeking protection.

Following the judgment  which turned out in favour of the claimant, “the mere and persistent phone calls made to Mrs Komolafe later turned to physical attacks on January 19 when she was attacked at a petrol station where she went to purchase fuel for her car at Mushin.

“She was shot in the leg while trying to escape from the scene and had to be treated at a hospital in the area.”

The petition stated that again on March 29, she was attacked  on her way home from office and beaten to stupor and was injured in the mouth.

“Our client having gone underground now alongside her family members, where she cannot be attacked, is desirous that the matter be investigated and perpetrators brought to book,” the petition adds.

  • Are you his wife or mother of his children?

NKECHI and Brown had been living together as a couple for over 10 years. They were blessed with three lovely daughters. To the outside community, they were an ideal couple, as they could be seen holding hands while they take walks down the streets. To put it mildly, they made every bachelor and spinster green with envy each time they take their evening strolls.

To the whole neighbourhood, Nkechi was known and addressed as Mrs. Brown and she would glow and respond with a wave of the hand whenever one addresses her that way. She was respected, and she had a perfect ‘home’ or so we thought. Nkechi’s world in one day came crashing down on her when the unexpected happened, did I say unexpected? I would like to paraphrase. Her world came crashing down on her when the unimaginable happened.

Brown had just been promoted at work (by the way Brown is a banker). Nkechi was elated, no she was thrilled. She did not stop there. She came to church to testify to the goodness of Almighty God on her household. She told of how they had hitherto stayed in a one-bedroom apartment and the package that was attached to her ‘husband’s promotion (a four-bedroom apartment, fully furnished and an official car with a driver).

The whole church gave a resounding applause following her testimony. The following week she went to the market and prepared Brown’s favourite meal, banga with starch, unusually. Brown came home a little earlier than expected with a strange looking man in a faded blue suit, the man was clutching a very huge Bible that Nkechi never knew existed in the stores.

Warmly, Nkechi welcomed her husband with a hug, but she got the shock of her life when Brown gently but firmly shoved her side. The Daddy welcome his kids chorused was met with the same cold response. She ushered the funny- looking man in and a surprised Nkechi followed them from behind.

She could not comprehend what the problem was. Was there a problem in the office? Had the promotion been withdrawn? Was there a bad news item from the village? A thousand and one questions went through her mind. She had lived with her husband for ten years. So far, the union had been blissful. Brown had never in those ten years raised his voice on her or even the kids, so what on earth could be wrong?

Innocently, she entered their one-bedroom apartment and before she could offer their guest any drink, her husband ordered her to sit down. Still feeling a little numb from Brown’s strange behaviour, she managed to sit down. Brown introduced the man as a prophet who he met earlier in the day when he went to have lunch with his colleagues. He claimed the man told him (Brown) the story of his life, right from his childhood days. The man even told him about his promotion and how the future would look bright except for one thing. At this point, Nkechi’s heart was beating so fast she could hear it.

Brown paused and looked at the man, as if asking for support. The man cleared his throat and continued from where Brown stopped. He looked straight into her eyes and said: “Madam, you be witch na you wan kill this man.” Before she could recover from the shock of what the man was saying, Brown, pointing an accusing finger at her, said: “Nkechi, so after all I have done for you. This is the thanks I get? Prophet says that if I continue to live with you, I will die in six months”. Nkechi said she could not sit any longer. She tried to find her voice to respond, but Brown was not through. He started dealing severe blows on the woman, shouting on top of his voice, he yelled, “leave my house,” throwing her things out in the process.

Still dazed from the happenings, all she could mutter was Dim, Dim (which means my husband, my husband). This even infuriated him the more. He got angrier and asked: “Who is your husband? Listen, you witch; I am not your husband, neither are you my wife. You are simply the mother of my children. After all, did I pay any bride price on you?”

At this point, neighbours had started rushing out from their rooms. Brown was not deterred by the crowd. He continued to shout: “Leave my house! Leave my house! Witch! You are not my wife. You are not my wife! You are just the mother of my children”.

All efforts by neighbours, friends and family members to make peace met a brick wall. To cut a very long story short, that was how Nkechi left her home of ten years to become a single woman and disgraced. The shame she brought on her parents could not be explained. Looking back, she recalled how she got pregnant for the man she called her husband for over ten years, the man she had sacrificed her future for.

And due to her pregnant state, Brown compelled her to move in with him and promised that the marriage rites would be done soon after the baby was born. Nkechi had been so carried away by Brown’s promises to meet with her parents that it never dawned on her that ten years, three kids, had passed so quickly. Whenever she tried to remind him, he would tell her that the time was not right. He claimed he was waiting for the big bucks to come before they perform their marriage rites. Well, the rest as they say is history.

Brown has since moved to Abuja. He has a very huge four-bedroom apartment and a car to match. Nkechi is stuck in Lagos with her kids, squatting with friends here and there, as her parents were still too angry to accommodate her. With no further education, no job (Brown had earlier told her there was no need for her to work). Where would she go from here? Would Brown come back to his senses? Was this a set-up so that she would not partake in the benefits that came with his promotion? Who was this fake prophet and where did he come from? If she was good enough to be his wife in a one-bedroom apartment, why was she not good enough when the goodies were here? What does the future hold for Nkechi and her kids? Only tomorrow will tell.

    My comment

If you must move in with a man, ensure he fulfils all conditions of acceptable marriage rites. If he does not have enough money, support him. (Wedding does not necessarily have to be expensive. You can go to the registry with just two witnesses. That way, you earn yourself and your kinsmen the respect they deserve. Don’t be too blinded by love that may not even appreciate you. I don’t care how long you have lived with him. I don’t care whether you have kids for him or not. If he has not performed the marriage rites, you are not his wife, and he is certainly not your husband.

The sooner you rectify this, the better for everyone. If he loves you, let him prove it. With one thousand naira, you can be married.

  • Wife ‘kills’ hubby

A 19-year-old woman, Mary Adeniyi, has been arrested for allegedly stabbing her husband to death.

The deceased, it was learnt, usually accused the suspect of cheating on him.

Mary, who is nursing a four-month-old baby, allegedly stabbed Michael in the neck with a knife.

Doctors pronounced him  dead in the hospital he was rushed to.

Command spokesman Chike Oti, a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP), told The Nation that the suspect would be arraigned after investigation.

  • Wife accuses husband of assault

A 26-year-old woman, Mrs. Cynthia Akpoyibo, has appealed to Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode and Police Commissioner Zubairu Muazu to save her from her violent husband, Amos Akpoyibo, an Assistant Superintendent (ASP).

She alleged that he threatened her to leave Lagos, or else he would deal with her.

Cynthia, a mother of three, said she got married to her estranged husband when she was 14-year-old in their village in Delta State, adding that he brought her to Lagos.

She alleged that he had been maltreating her, adding: “My husband refuses to pay our children’s school fees unless I agree to give him anal sex.”

Findings by our correspondent showed that the duo were regular callers at the Police Provost Unit.

Some officers corroborated the woman’s allegations.

It was gathered that there was a time he beat her up and injured her to the extent that she almost died.

Narrating her ordeal to The Nation yesterday, Cynthia said the latest trouble started about four months ago, which forced her to pack out of her matrimonial home with her children.

She alleged that she could no longer endure his infidelity and violence.

Contacted, Akpoyibo warned our reporter not to call him over the matter again.

He said: “Walahi! Do not, in fact, no one should call me over this matter again. If she is with you, tell her I said she should go to the village. I have nothing to do with her and this is a family matter.

“Let her go to the village. Was she not the one that left the house with the kids? I do not have time for her. Tell her never to call my line again and you too, don’t ever call me again.”

  • Court issues bench warrant for ex-NIA DG Oke, wife

THE Federal High Court in Lagos yesterday issued bench warrant for the arrest of former National Intelligence Agency (NIA) Director-General Ambassador Ayodele Oke and his wife, Folasade.

Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke issued the bench warrant for the couple’s arrest and detention, following an application by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to that effect.

Prosecuting counsel Rotimi Oyedepo told Justice Aneke that the defendants could not be found so as to be served with a money laundering charge filed against them.

He said the couple also refused to answer phone calls from EFCC operatives.

Moving the application, Oyedepo urged the court to declare the defendants wanted.

He said: “The defendants are not in court and not represented. They are yet to be served with the charge.

“In the course of investigation, they provided an address in their statements. We have gone to that address but we didn’t find them. Their security confirmed they live there.

“We also made repeated calls to their numbers, but they chose not to pick our calls.

“In view of these, I urge your lordship to grant us a warrant of arrest of the defendants for the purpose of compelling their attendance in court.

“Section 114 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) empowers your lordship to do so. We’re ready to produce them if we obtain the order.”

Oyedepo said the suspects, who had no legal representation, could not claim ignorant of the charge as the case had been in the news since it was initiated.

“We pray for an additional order declaring them wanted,” the lawyer prayed.

Justice Aneke held that the application was meritorious in view of the prosecution’s explanations.

He said: “Consequent upon the difficulties encountered by the prosecution in having them appear before the honourable court to stand their trial, I am convinced that the application is not without merit.

“In the circumstances, I hereby accordingly issue an order of warrant of arrest against the first defendant in accordance with Section 114 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act 2015.”

Justice Aneke, however, refused the prayer to declare them wanted.

He said they would only be declared wanted, if EFCC does not succeed in executing the bench warrant after trying.

Oke and his wife were charged in connection with the $43,449,947.00 found in Flat 7B, No. 16 Osborne Road, Osborne Towers in Ikoyi Lagos.

Justice Muslim Hassan had on June 6, 2017, granted a final forfeiture order of the funds.

EFCC said the Okes, on or about April 12, 2017 in Lagos, concealed $43, 449, 947.00 property of the Federal Government in Flat 7B, No. 16 Osborne Road, Osborne Towers, Ikoyi, Lagos.

It said they reasonably ought to have known that the sum formed part of proceeds of an unlawful act to wit: criminal breach of trust.

The commission said the couple, between August 25 and September 2, 2015 in Lagos, indirectly used $1,658,000, property of the Federal Government, to acquire the flat.

They were also accused of directly retaining $160,777,136.85, property of the Federal Government, between August 25 and September 2, 2015 in Lagos.

EFCC said they “reasonably ought to have known” that the sum “formed part of proceeds of an unlawful act to wit: criminal breach of trust”. The alleged offence in all the counts, EFCC said, are contrary to Section 15 (2) (a) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) (Amendment) Act 2012 and punishable under Section 15(3) of the same Act.

Justice Aneke adjourned until March 18 for report of compliance.

  • EFCC unable to serve ex-NIA chief Oke, wife with charge

THE Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) yesterday told the Federal High Court in Lagos that it was unable to serve former National Intelligence Agency (NIA) Director-General Ambassador Ayodele Oke and his wife, Folasade, with the money laundering charge filed against them.

Prosecuting counsel Rotimi Oyedepo told Justice Chukwujekwu Aneke that the defendants were still outside the court’s jurisdiction.

“We are having issues with service of the charge,” Oyedepo said.

According to him, the commission made unsuccessful efforts to reach Oke and his wife.

“We have gone to their known addresses, but could not find them to be able to serve them with the charge,” Oyedepo said.

He noted that the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) empowers the judge to make an order compelling the defendants’ appearance.

But, Justice Aneke said he could not make any such order because the case was not yet properly before him.

“I’ve not seen your file. It’s when I see the file that I can determine the urgency of any application.

“I can’t exercise my discretion without seeing the efforts you’ve made on paper,” the judge said.

He asked Oyedepo to return in 24 hours with the necessary processes.

The defendants’ whereabouts is unknown, with reports saying they had left the country.

Oke and his wife were charged in connection with the $43,449,947,000 found in Flat 7B, No. 16 Osborne Road, Osborne Towers in Ikoyi, Lagos.

Justice Muslim Hassan had on June 6, 2017, granted a final forfeiture order of the funds since no one appeared before the court to claim them.

The four-count charge against the couple was signed by Oyedepo, Nnaemeka Omewa and Idris Abubakar Mohammed.

EFCC in the Proof of Evidence revealed how Flat 7B was bought for $1, 658,000 (N596, 880,000)

It said one Alhaji Shehu Usman Anka will give evidence of the receipt of the sum of $1, 658,000 from the wife of the ex-NIA boss.

The anti-graft agency also said that the agency got about $289,202,382.00 from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

It added that one Benjamin Kiksenenso will give evidence of how he was instructed to go to the CBN to collect the $289,202,382.00.

    Justice Aneke adjourned until today.
