  • My hubby assaults me, says wife

A 49-year-old woman, Yemisi Muhammad yesterday urged a Mushin Customary Court to dissolve her marriage because of what she called “frequent assault” by her husband.

Yemisi, a businesswoman, told the court that she was no longer interested in the 18-year-old marriage to Bashiru Muhammad, a journalist.

According to her, Muhammad started maltreating her when she became pregnant with her first child. She said she ended up with a stillbirth because of the “intense assault.”

“On a fateful day, while I was pregnant with my first child, I was in the kitchen cooking, while my husband was watching ball in the sitting room. I went to him that I was feeling dizzy but he gave no attention to me, I went back to him the second time, but he got annoyed, called me names and beat me till I hit my stomach on the floor.

“After some days I realised my body was getting swollen and my stomach shrinked by the day, so I told my husband who took me to the hospital. It was there we found out I have been carrying a dead baby. Even after that, he never stopped beating me,” she said.

She said she endured his maltreatment for over 10 years because she did not want to go against her mother’s wishes.

She said: “I am the only survivor of my mother’s seven children, and all my mother ever wanted was for me is to remain in my husband’s house and never to have more than one husband.

“All I want now is peace of mind, he has been threatening my life. I am hypertensive; please I can no longer handle his maltreatment and beating. All I want is divorce; I want to be set free.”

Muhammad denied the allegations, saying: “I have never for once beat my wife. We are two different people from different background; so it’s normal to have differences. Truly, we fought over things we should not fight on, but it never got to the stage of beating my wife.

“I wouldn’t have married my wife at all if I hadn’t loved her. I was warned that she is promiscuous. Yemisi left my house not because I assaulted her, because I never did, she left on her will.”

Yemisi, he said, had been denying him access to his children since 2014.

“Yemisi left my house in 2013, and tricked me into having custody to my children in 2014. And ever since then, she has been denying me access to my children, which I never did to her while the children were with me,” he said.

The court, presided over by Mrs. E.E Amuka-Pemu and Mrs. N.M Fashanu, advised the couple to maintain peace, pending further investigation.

The case continues on September 4.

  • Wife to Court: My husband wants to kill me with sex

A Grade “C” Customary Court in Iseyin on Wednesday dissolved a seven-year-old marriage between one Baliki Oke and her husband,  Arowolo, over the latter’s incessant demand for sex.

Baliki had approached the court in July seeking dissolution of her marriage to Arowolo over his frequent sex demand.

She told the court that the union had produced a six-year-old boy.

“My husband wants to kill me with sex, he demands sex more than he does for food, he wants to have sex with me six times in a day before he gets satisfied.

“Arowolo goes to the farm very early in the morning and would not wait for me to bring his lunch.

“He will come home in the afternoon just to have sex twice before he goes back to the farm and would still make demands when he returns at night.

“Anytime I try to resist him, he will beat me till I surrender.

“I have decided to quit for the sake of my life, I don’t want to die now, my lord, please dissolve this marriage,’’ she said.

Responding, Arowolo, who did not refute the claims of his estranged wife, told the court that he has a high sex drive.

“I have worked very hard to solve this problem of incessant sex urge to no avail.

“The truth is that I can’t cope with life without sex, I can’t work, eat or play, sex is more important to me than anything else in life.

“I have been suffering since she packed out of our house about 10 days ago; I have not been going to work, I have begged her relatives to plead with her on my behalf, “he said.

Arowolo, who urged the court not to dissolve the marriage, also promised that he will check his urge for sex if she returns.

Delivering judgment, the President of the court, Chief Adelodun Raheem, said that all the efforts of the court to plead with the wife and her relatives to resolve the crisis did not yield a positive result.

Raheem, consequently, dissolved the marriage and granted the custody of their child to Baliki.

He ordered Arowolo to be paying N2, 500 weekly to the court’s registrar for the child’s upkeep.

  • ‘My wife apologises for my mistakes, it irritates me’

“My wife can beg for the Nigeria. I don’t mean begging I mean apologisng.

She apologizes even when I am wrong, her sorry is beginning to irritate me .

I cheated on her with our neighbour’s daughter and she saw all the evidences, even the girls mum came to harass me and my wife kept covering for me.

After the drama she came to beg me. I was irritated.

I asked her, why are you apologizing and she said because she loves me, why can’t she wait for me to beg her when I wrong her. Why is she always playing the fool?

So today, she saw a message on my phone, it was a message I sent to my side chick and she confronted me, I tried to explain to her and she got upset, as I was about leaving the house, she started begging me again.

Telling me that she is not angry again.

I tried to push her away, she held me and I slapped her by mistake. Expecting her to let me go but she held my shirt and kept begging.

I felt pity for her but at the same time I was irritated. Why is she acting all desperate? I love a woman that can be quite hard, not a foot mat.

How do I go about this?

I want her to stop apologizing sheepishly.”

  • Wife replaces deceased cleric as Church leader

The wife of the late General Overseer/Senior Pastor of Chapel of His Glory, Reverend  (Mrs.) Modupe Salami, has been named as the successor of her husband, Rev. (Dr.) Kunle Salami.
The announcement was made on Sunday by the President of Sword of the Spirit Ministries, Bishop Wale Oke, at a thanksgiving service held at the Chapel of His Glory headquarters, Glory Land, Adebayo, Ado-Ekiti.
Mrs. Salami’s emergence as the new General Overseer of the church was announced barely twenty four hours after her husband’s remains were interred.
Salami died on May 14th in Maryland, United States, after a brief illness at the age of 57. He was the host of a popular radio preaching programme, Morning Dew, and author of many Christian books in his lifetime.
Oke said he did not attend Salami’s burial on Saturday because “the father is not expected to attend the funeral of his son” having ordained the deceased into the ministry.
He urged the church to cooperate with Mrs. Salami to succeed in the onerous task of overseeing the church and expanding the work of the kingdom.
It was a harvest of tributes at the funeral of the General Overseer/Senior Pastor of Chapel of His Glory, Rev. (Dr.) Kunle Salami held in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital on Saturday.
The funeral service in honour of the late cleric was held at the Ekiti State Pavilion, New Iyin Road, Ado-Ekiti with guests coming from far and near to pay their last respect.
Among those who attended the funeral service are former Governor of old Ondo State, Evangelist Bamidele Olumilua; wife of Ekiti State Deputy Governor, Mrs. Janet Olusola; Catholic Bishop of Ekiti Doicese,
Most Rev. Felix Ajakaye and President of Agape Ministries, Bishop Felix Adejumo.
National President of Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), Rev. Felix Omobude; wife of the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Folu Adeboye and national leadership of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) were represented.
Fellow clerics, children, church members and other associates of the deceased testified to the good life of the deceased who quit his job as a university lecturer for full time ministry.
Delivering the sermon at the funeral service, Bishop Mike Bamidele, said the late preacher will be remembered for his selfless service in God’s vineyard and to humanity.
In the sermon titled “Let Your Life Count Instead of Counting Your Years,” Bamidele said Salami was a father and mentor to many, a giver and sponsor of education of many children who were not his biological children.
Bamidele stressed that human life is like a flower, grass and vapour which cannot last forever urging the audience to use the period of their existence to positively impact the lives of others around them.
  • We offered Egbedi care, say bishop, wife

The General Overseer of the Manna Prayer Mountain Worldwide Church, Bishop Chris Kwakpovwe, has denied allegations by a church member, Mrs Tamara Egbedi, that she lost seven teeth and had a fractured jaw during the church programme on January 22, 2010.

Mrs Egbedi sued the church and Bishop Kwakpovwe for the injury she allegedly sustained during the church programme.

The cleric said the church cared for her.

Kwakpovwe, who spoke with The Nation, said he did not know Mrs Egbedi.

He said: “This girl is behaving as if she knows me and as if I invited her one-on-one for the programme. I have nothing against her, but I think she is after something.

“She said we did not care about her, but it is a lie. All the people who took up the case with her are in a syndicate. They all plan to share the money, if she wins the case. I was advised not to see her because we felt she was up to something as she was requesting to see me.”

Kwakpovwe said the church offered her N150,000 out of benevolence, being a charity organisation.

“Rather, she was threatening and putting fire into the whole thing. My wife appealed to her but she insisted on taking the matter to court. All these attacks are distractions,” he said.

His wife, Ejiro, added that the church showed Egbedi sufficient care.

She added: “Immediately Mrs Egbedi fell at the programme, she refused treatment. We had ambulance, doctors and nurses, but she refused to be treated. She was also taken to the man of God to lay hands on her to pray, but she refused. She was boiling and saying her lawyers were waiting. This made us feel something was fishing.

“We later invited her to the church, as she was insisting to see the bishop. Some other ministers and I offered to help her, but she insisted to see the bishop.

“She said she would not have any husband because of the (missing) teeth. But I told her God would send her a husband. Today, she is married.

“We also took her to a dentist. We tried all we could to solve the problem, but she insisted on seeing the bishop. This made us to feel that something was fishing.”

She urged Mrs Egbedi to allow peace to reign.

  • Wife caught hubby in bed with their daughter, court told

An Ikeja Domestic Violence and Sexual Offences Court yesterday heard how a wife caught her husband Folorunso Oluwaseun, 52, sleeping with their daughter on their matrimonial bed.

Oluwaseun, a technician, who lives at 30, Popoola Street, Ishawo, Ikorodu was arraigned on the February 8 on a two-count charge of defilement and sexual assault.

    He pleaded not guilty.

Led in evidence by the prosecutor, Mr Babajide Boye, a witness, Sergeant Olakunle Orebe attached to the Gender Unit of the Lagos State Police Command said the victim told the police that her mother caught her father in the act four years after he started sleeping with her.

The witness said the woman was not aware of what was going on until 2016 when she caught the defendant with their daughter.

He said the woman relocated from Lagos to Ibadan with her other children, a boy and a girl because of the incident.

Orebe said when the victim relocated to Ibadan, she started teaching in a school.

When Boye sought to tender the statement of the defendant in evidence, the defence counsel, Mr Worer Obuagbaka, objected to its admissibility on the grounds that it was obtained under duress.

To untie the knot, Justice Sybil Nwaka ordered a trial-within-trial.

During the trial-within-trial, Orebe denied forcing Oluwaseun to write his confessional statement.

He said: “I cautioned him before he wrote the statement and I told him he was entitled to legal representation.  After he wrote his statement, I read the statement aloud to him and he affirmed the contents”.

Orebe said Oluwaseun was neither handcuffed nor chained when he was brought from Ikorodu to Ikeja.

“I did not torture, beat, slap or threaten him, he understood the statement when I read it aloud and he signed it. My superior officer, Abimbola Williams an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) read the statement again to him and he affirmed making the statement and the superior officer signed,” he said.

Oluwaseun gave a different version of how his confessional statement was obtained.

Led in evidence by Obuagbaka, he said was in his house when the police came to arrest him. He said on arrival at the station, he was told to respect himself or he would be handcuffed.

He said when they got to the Police Command, he was given a paper to write his statement about what happened between him and his daughter.

Justice Nwaka adjourned till June 28.
