Ex-Governor Rotimi’s wife kidnapped in Ibadan

ABDUCTORS have struck in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, snatching away the wife of Nigeria’s former ambassador to the United States, Gen. Oluwole Rotimi (rtd).

Mrs. Tayo Rotimi was grabbed in front of her company, AOP Logistics Limited, on New Ife Road at about 6:30pm by four armed hefty men. She was leaving the office after the close of work.

The kidnappers are demanding N200 million ransom.

Five of the company’s workers are being held by the police, who have launched a search for the abductors.

The home of Gen. Rotimi, a former military governor of the Western Region in Ikolaba, Ibadan, was deserted yesterday.

Oyo State police spokesman Ayodele Lanade said: “It is true the woman was kidnapped on Monday at about 6.30pm.

Our men are on the trail of the criminals.”

It was learnt that the abductors came in a green Nissan Primera car, which they drove in reverse into the company’s gate.

The police said they suspected a foul play, considering the manner the kidnappers drove into the premises and forced their victim into their car .

Lanade said “the incident was different from other cases of kidnapping in some parts of the country because, in this case, we learnt that the driver of the woman was with the abductors when they took her away.

“And we found out that there is a rift between the woman and her workers because she was said to be owing them three months salary and there was agitation by the aggrieved workers.

“In the course of demanding for their unpaid three months salary, some of them were sacked . So, it seems there is a foul play in this case. It’s not in anyway related to other kidnapping cases in Southeast and Southsouth ,” the police spokesman said.

The company’s workers were praying yesterday for the quick release of their managing director. General Manager Mr Omini Ikpi recounted how she was abducted.

He said: “The MD was about driving out of the gate when she was abducted by four gunmen who blocked her with a grey Nissan car. They shot sporadically into the air to scare people away.”

Ikpi said at the time of her kidnap, Mrs Rotimi had her bag containing two BlackBerry phones, a laptop and other valuables. Her shoes dropped when she was being dragged away from her black Prado into the kidnappers’ car.

“Immediately she was kidnapped, Egbeda police station was contacted and they brought a patrol van. I believe there is an informant in this company. The police have arrested three of our security guards and two workers while the investigation is still on going.”

The Chief Security Officer of the company, Mr Usman Illiasu, said although he was not on duty during the incident, he was told by security men on duty that the abductors came with sophisticated weapons.

Illiasu said around 4pm (yesterday), Mrs Rotimi’s phone was called and it was picked by a male voice who said she will be killed if her family members failed to bring N200 million for her to be released.

He said:” The driver of her car has been arrested with other co-workers, and our workers here could not work today (yesterday) and we have all been praying for the safety and quick release of our boss.”

  • ‘My wife wished to be celebrated, not mourned’

An entrepreneur, Prince Tunde Ponnle, yesterday said his late wife, Olufunke, an engineer, wished that she should be celebrated not mourned.

He told The Nation that his children have been planning to fulfil his wife’s wish of a befitting burial to celebrate her personality and achievement, rather than mourn her.

Mrs. Ponnle, according to him, died after battling cancer for five years and many people have expressed shock on her death.

“I have been pleading that the woman wanted celebration, not mourning. She wanted everybody to be happy and celebrate her,” he said.

Mr. Ponnle added: “Of course, whatever advantage people derived from her would be mourned, but on the other hand, people should celebrate her personality and not mourn her death. If they appreciate what they have gained from her, they should do what she wanted them to do. So, we want people to celebrate her and not mourn.”

He noted that his “biggest problem,” which is how to live alone without his partner of 48 years, was solved by his wife before she died.

“A big vacuum has been created and she knew it would be a big problem. So, she told me how I should spend my time in a way that would keep me busy,” Ponnle said, adding: “She told me to engage in playing golf so that I would not be lonely. She asked me to continue with the humanitarian projects she left behind, especially to reorganise the MicCom Foundation for Educational Development, which she managed for years.”

A look at the condolence register showed Mrs. Ponnle’s strong personality, exceptional humility and conviviality, a big heart for humanity and an industrious foresight, which all combined to make her larger-than-life.

The register contains comments that show how deeply people admire her, with many referring to her as “mummy,” irrespective of age and religious status.

  • Man sentenced to 14 days imprisonment for beating wife

An Agege Customary Court on Tuesday sentenced a 39-year-old man to 14 days imprisonment for contempt, following his disobedience to the court order to maintain the peace with his estrange wife.

“The court hereby sentences you, Ibukun Oluwadamilare, to 14 days imprisonment for contempt of court for beating up your wife.

“I believe that if you get there, you will learn one or two lessons and you will control your temper thereafter,’’ the Court President, Mr. Emmanuel Sokunle, said.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the court, had at the last hearing, ordered the couple in the divorce suit to maintain the peace.

However, the wife, the petitioner in the suit, informed the court a day later that the respondent beat her, in spite of the order.

The petitioner, Adesewa, 33, had filed the suit in September, asking the court to dissolve her 12-year-old marriage to Oluwadamilare over battering and threat to life.

Adesewa, who lives at No. 18b, Kayode Joseph St., Powerline, Oke- Ira, Ogba, told the court: “My husband had wanted to make love to me in the presence of our children but I refused.

“He then beat me mercilessly to the extent of removing one of my teeth. If my husband has money, he won’t give me and the children.

“He prefers to go to the club and declare surplus and when the money is finished, he comes home to steal my money,” she alleged.

The mother of three children, aged between five and 10 years, also added that her husband often malign her before their children by making unsubstantiated allegation that she was promiscuous.

“We live in one room but my husband won’t wait till midnight when our children will be asleep before drawing my pants.

“My husband started going to a white garment church in April, and so, brings home different colours of candle.

“He left the church we were both going because he accused me of going out with our pastor and I am fed up with all of his behaviour,” she said.
