Nigeria @ 65: Wike hails Tinubu’s progress, urges Nigerians to embrace peace, unity

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has said that the administration of President Bola Tinubu has made significant progress despite prevailing challenges.

In his Independence Day message on Wednesday, Wike expressed optimism about a brighter future for the nation and called on Nigerians to remain united and peaceful.

He said, “On this occasion of the 65th Independence anniversary of our great nation, on behalf of the FCT Administration, I wish to felicitate with all residents of the Federal Capital Territory as we celebrate our nation’s historic event.”

“This is a special occasion when we pay tribute to our founding fathers who laboured dauntlessly to birth a formidable country which today stands tall in the comity of nations. It is also a celebration of our brotherhood and unity, which have been woven from the loom of our diversity.

“As such, and in keeping with the theme for this year’s celebration, all hands must be on deck to ensure that the labour of the nation’s founding fathers is not in vain.  I, therefore, appeal to all residents to continue to live true to the ideals of the heroes of our land. The Federal Capital Territory remains Nigeria’s symbol of unity and nationhood; hence, we must continue to embrace peace.

“Expectedly, today is one for sober reflection and stock-taking. This is necessary so we can look ahead with renewed hope towards a better future for the Federal Capital Territory and the nation.

“Let me use this occasion to express my appreciation to residents of the FCT for their unwavering support for the Renewed Hope Agenda of the President, His Excellency, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which centres on economic growth, national security, food security, sustainable development, and infrastructure development.

“In keeping with the central objective of Mr. President’s Renewed Hope Agenda, we have made determined progress on several fronts”.

Wike said the FCT Administration, with the unflinching support of residents, will continue to work to provide first-class infrastructure and public utilities, as demonstrated in the completion and commissioning of strategic roads and public utilities.

The minister said, “It is our firm belief that no city can be said to be a city without a good network of roads, hence our focus on road construction. Other sectors are receiving due attention as well.

“We have reconstructed most of our schools and hospitals and provided much-needed equipment and personnel. We have supported our farmers, promoted Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), and, by so doing, empowered our youths and women.  I assure you that we will continue to work to reinvigorate the economy and enhance the living standards of the good people of FCT.

“Residents have also remained intentional about living together in peace and harmony despite a few distractions. Consequently, the FCT has become one of the most peaceful places to reside in the entire country. This is not only due to the security measures we have put in place, but also because of zero tolerance of residents for insecurity, and their readiness to promote peace in every part of the Territory.

“Come February 2026, the FCT will kick off the electioneering process in the country as residents head to the polls to elect new chairmen and councillors for the six area councils. I implore residents to go about campaigning for candidates of their choice in a peaceful and orderly manner. I also encourage everyone to come out en masse when the time comes, to vote for leaders who evidently have their interest at heart; leaders who have vision and capacity to attract development and prosperity to the people.”

He assured residents of the administration’s efforts in partnership with the law enforcement agencies to ensure security, law, and order in the FCT at all times.

He appealed to all residents to go about their lawful businesses, to be watchful over their neighbourhoods, and to report all suspicious movements to the law enforcement agents.

Wike said, “Amid the various challenges we face as a nation, we are very optimistic that the future is brighter. We have a President who is intentional about prioritising the well-being of the citizens and has brought unprecedented development to the FCT. We must, therefore, continue to work together faithfully, to ensure that FCT’s potentials and our collective aspirations are realised to the fullest.”

Good road network will boost Nigeria’s prospect of hosting Commonwealth games in 2030 – Wike

The Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike on Tuesday said mass road networks across the FCT will give credibility to Nigeria’s quest to host the Commonwealth Games in 2030.

The projects, Wike said, were anchored on the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu.

Wike said this at the official flagged off of the construction of Arterial Road S1 with a three-span bridge from Ring Road II to the FCT Fire Service station in Kaura District, Abuja.

The minister said the crucial road will not only open up the Kaura District for development but will also enhance the operational capacity of the Fire Service Station within the area.

The Minister said; “It will help the fire service station in case of emergencies. By the time this road is constructed with a three-span bridge, of course, anywhere there is any fire incident and they are called upon, they will respond immediately. Again, this is also to contribute to their efficiency in their job delivery”.

Wike expressed confidence that the contractor, Infiouest Construction Company, which is currently undertaking the Abuja/Kaduna/Zaria Road, will deliver a good quality job and appealed to the company to also give opportunity to the youths to participate in the road construction.

He said: “I understand that Nigeria is bidding to host the Commonwealth Games, and it will be difficult for us to achieve that if we don’t have a good network of roads. When the Committee comes and they see that the basic infrastructure is being provided, that gives us the leverage to be given the hosting rights of the Commonwealth Games.

“So, all these linkages, all these networks of roads are also geared to showcase to the world that we have a city that can host the Commonwealth Games”.

Stressing that the construction and rehabilitation of key roads in each of the six Area Councils was designed to extend development beyond the city centre, Wike reiterated that Abuja city will compete with some of the developed cities of the world by the end of President Tinubu’s first tenure.

“As I have said before, it is the hope of the Renewed Hope Agenda that before the first tenure of Mr. President ends, Abuja will be a different place. Abuja will be competing with some other cities of the world”, the Minister stated.

Minister of State, FCT, Mariya Mahmoud, while delivering the vote of thanks, expressed deep appreciation to President Tinubu for his leadership and vision in the provision of infrastructure that directly improves the lives of the people and thanked the FCT Minister for his consistent drive to transform Abuja into a modern, functional, and inclusive city.

Providing an overview of the road project, the Acting Executive Secretary, Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), Richard Yunana Dauda, said access roads being developed under the project included part of Arterial Road S1 to connect to the Ring Road II in collector Road CS2, as well as a minor access road that formed part of the Kaura District Development.

He said the scope of work includes the construction of 2.4km of asphalt-paved roads with the three-span bridge, surface water drainage, as well as erosion control measures, among other engineering services, adding that the road project, during its construction, will provide direct and indirect job opportunities.

    • FCT minister kicks off construction of a seven-kilometre road

Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike has thrown his weight behind the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in the forthcoming Abuja Area Council elections, Christopher Maikalangu.

The election is scheduled for next February.

Maikalangu is the Chairman of Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC). He defected recently from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), and is seeking re-election for a second term in office.

Wike urged residents of Tunga Madaki and neighbouring communities to reciprocate the Federal Government’s gesture by voting for the ruling party.

The minister spoke during the kick-off of the construction of a seven-kilometre road with four-span bridges linking Tunga Madaki and eight other settlements.

He said the project was in fulfillment of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and a response to the community’s long-standing demand for infrastructure.

Wike recalled that the road project stemmed from earlier negotiations during the acquisition of land for the construction of a second runway at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport.

The minister said that though the land belongs to the FCT, the Aviation Ministry had to pay compensation, during which the affected communities demanded road access as a condition.

He said: “It was quite unfair that a people would surrender their ancestral land for a national project like a second runway, yet they had no access road, even to the airport they gave up the land for.

“So, I took the matter to Mr. President and he said: ‘Whatever they ask for, give it to them.’ Today, we are here to fulfill that promise.”’

Wike promised that the road would be completed next June to coincide with the third anniversary of President Tinubu’s administration.

The minister hailed the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), the project contractor, for committing to the timeline.

“This is a government that listens, a government that keeps its promises. For the first time in your lives, you asked for one thing, and the government responded. That is what the Renewed Hope Agenda is all about.”

Wike lauded Maikalangu’s role in the project, describing him as an advocate for the community.

“Maikalangu has never stopped reminding me about the promise made to you during the land compensation process.

“He kept pressing, and here we are today. I am handing him over to you. Support him in the February 2026 elections so that by June, when the road is inaugurated, we’ll all dance together in celebration.”

…to be commissioned during Tinubu’s third year in office

The minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, on Monday, threw his weight behind the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for the forthcoming Abuja Area Council elections scheduled for February 2026.

Incumbent chairman of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Christopher Maikalangu, who recently defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC) from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), is seeking re-election for a second term in office.

Wike urged residents of Tunga Madaki and neighbouring communities to reciprocate the Federal Government’s gesture by voting for the ruling party.

Speaking during the flag-off ceremony for the construction of a 7-kilometre road with four-span bridges linking Tunga Madaki and eight other settlements, the minister said the project was in fulfilment of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and a direct response to the community’s long-standing demand for infrastructure.

Wike noted that the road project stemmed from earlier negotiations during the acquisition of land for the construction of a second runway at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport.

He explained that despite the land belonging to the Federal Capital Territory, the Aviation Ministry had to pay compensation, during which the affected communities demanded road access as a condition.

Wike said, “It was quite unfair that a people would surrender their ancestral land for a national project like a second runway, yet they had no access road, even to the airport they gave land for.

“So, I took the matter to Mr. President, and he said, ‘Whatever they ask for, give it to them.’ Today, we are here to fulfil that promise.”

The FCT Minister stated that the road construction will be completed and commissioned by June 2026, to coincide with the third anniversary of President Tinubu’s administration.

He commended the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), the project contractor, for committing to the timeline.

“This is a government that listens, a government that keeps its promises. For the first time in your lives, you asked for one thing, and the government responded. That is what the Renewed Hope Agenda is all about.”

While addressing the visibly excited crowd, Wike lauded the role played by Maikalangu, whom he described as a tireless advocate for the Tunga Madaki community.

“Maikalangu has never stopped reminding me about the promise made to you during the land compensation process,” Wike said.

The minister said, “He kept pressing, and here we are today. I am handing him over to you. Support him in the February 2026 elections, so that by June, when the road is commissioned, we’ll all dance together in celebration”.

Wike did not mince words in linking government performance to electoral loyalty, telling the residents, “One good turn deserves another. When you do for me, I do for you. When you fall for me, I fall for you. When you listen to me, I listen to you.”

He urged the people to reflect on past leadership and question the absence of attention before the APC-led administration.

“You’ve had council chairmen before—did anyone remember Tunga Madaki? Did they connect you to the airport whose land you gave away? Ask them where they were when your roads were impassable.”

Wike added that by next year, the road would not only serve as a key access route to the airport via Bill Clinton Drive but would also catalyse development across the nine previously neglected communities.

He ended with a symbolic charge, “Remember the man who remembered you during the rainy season. This is a time to stand with the party that brought development to your doorstep.”

With campaigns for the FCT Area Council elections now officially open, Wike’s remarks are being seen as a strong political endorsement of the APC’s grassroots strategy in the territory.

The February 2026 elections are expected to be closely watched as a litmus test for the APC’s influence in the capital city, especially in areas previously dominated by opposition parties.

Speaking in the same vein, FCT Minister of State, Dr Mariya Mahmoud, noted that by providing an alternative access route that bypasses the airport’s second runway, the project would significantly ease traffic along Bill Clinton Drive, enhance security and convenience for airport users, and open up Tunga Madaki and adjoining settlements to socio-economic opportunities.

She said, “More importantly, the inclusion of a 4-span bridge demonstrates the administration’s determination to ensure resilience and durability in our infrastructure, while also guaranteeing seamless connectivity for motorists and residents.”

She commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, whose Renewed Hope Agenda continues to manifest in tangible projects in the Territory.

Mahmoud also applauded the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, for his visionary leadership and unwavering commitment to infrastructural development across the Federal Capital Territory.

…reaffirms commitment to Renewed Hope Agenda of President Tinubu

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has said that robust road infrastructure is critical to attracting investors and laying the groundwork for essential facilities like hospitals and schools.

He made the remark on Friday during the official flag-off of access roads to the Renewed Hope City and other estates in the Karsana District, Abuja.

Wike described the project as a breakthrough in the FCT Administration’s commitment to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s directive on essential infrastructure for housing developments, noting it was a promise kept under the Renewed Hope Agenda.

Wike said, “What we cannot run away from is that no city can be said to be a city without a good network of roads. That is basic. What qualifies a city first is the network of roads, and then you talk about other facilities. All these houses you are seeing, without a good network of roads, make no sense. If you want to build a hospital here without a road, it makes no sense. If you want to build schools here, without a road, it makes no sense. So, the first thing you must provide to attract even investors is the road network, and that is what we are doing”.

The FCT Minister commended the contractor, Messrs Lubrik Construction Company Nig Ltd, for mobilizing to the site even before receiving payment, describing it as a show of confidence in the FCT Administration.

He expressed hope that the company will keep its promise to deliver a quality project in good time for the inauguration during President Tinubu’s third anniversary, assuring residents that funds will be made available to ensure timely completion.

“Let me assure the residents of Karsana District that we have discussed with the contractors.  We will do everything within our own power to see that funds are made available so that during the third-year anniversary of Mr. President, we will inaugurate this road network. I hope the contractors will keep to their promises”, the Minister stated.

Acting Head of FCTA Civil Service, Nancy Sabanti Nathan, in her vote of thanks, expressed profound gratitude to President Tinubu for prioritizing the development of the FCT in line with the Renewed Hope agenda and thanked the FCT Minister for his unmatchable leadership style in the FCT.

She added that the road project will ease traffic congestion and provide a vital link between Karsana District and other parts of the city, thereby boosting commercial activities and residential development, contributing to the growth of Abuja as a model city.

Giving an overview of the project, the Acting Executive Secretary of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA), Engr. Richard Yunana Dauda explained that the road network to the Renewed Hope estate and other estates within Karsana West begins at the outer Northern Expressway (Murtala Mohammed expressway) through the arterial road N40 within the Karsana North District and eventually connects with the arterial road N11 (Ahmadu Bello Way).

He said the contract for the project was awarded by the Federal Executive Council in March 2025 and is expected to be completed within 18 months.

Dauda further disclosed that the scope of work includes the construction of a 10.5-kilometer span of road networks, as well as the provision of modern drainage systems, solar street lighting, and other engineering facilities.

He highlighted the extensive benefits of the project, including the creation of job opportunities, reduced travel time, and improved security in the area, adding that the new roads will not only provide access to the Renewed Hope estates but also open up the Karsana district for further development, contributing to the city’s overall growth.

Technical Manager, Lubrik Construction Company, Engr. Anthony El-Khoury expressed gratitude for the opportunity and pledged to work closely with all stakeholders to deliver the project within budget and on schedule.

Nigerian contractors, under the aegis of the Federation of Construction Industry (FOCI), have urged the Federal Government to lay out a proper transition plan that will enable them to switch from asphalt to concrete road construction across the country.

The federation hailed Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike for recognising and engaging its members in the ongoing infrastructure transformation agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the nation’s capital and satellite towns.

FOCI President and the federation’s Chairman-in-Council, Chief Vincent Barrah, spoke at the organisation’s 69th annual general meeting (AGM) in Abuja.

Barrah said FOCI members remained committed to delivering quality projects that meet global standards.

But he said the ongoing discussion on transiting from asphalt to concrete roads must be mutually agreed upon with a clear plan, going forward.

The federation’s president stressed that with a proper transition plan, his members were ready for the innovation.

“You cannot switch overnight. Concrete roads require different designs, equipment, and training. Our members are prepared, but there has to be a clear plan and enough time to adapt,” Barrah said.

The FOCI president emphasised that whether the government adopts asphalt or concrete, the federation’s members have the manpower, expertise, and equipment to deliver to the best standards, provided there is clarity and fairness in project planning and execution.

The FOCI, an umbrella body of building and civil engineering contractors, also called for fairness in the assessment of its members’ contributions to Nigeria’s infrastructure sector.

Barrah stated that the industry has faced challenges on contract administration, re-awarding of projects, contract conditions, and payment delays, which have impacted both companies and workers.

He maintained that FOCI members are reputable companies with decades of experience in road construction and infrastructure delivery.

“Our members have constructed roads that have lasted 20, 30, even 40 years, and are still in use. We want to be fairly recognised for the quality of work we deliver,” Barrah said.

Commenting on the massive infrastructural development in the FCT, he said: “We honestly commend the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory. I want to tell you that while another ministry is terminating the contracts of our members on the pages of newspaper for poor performance, the Honourable Minister of the FCT has been inaugurating projects constructed by our members. And our members are impressed.

“The FOCI will want to say a big thank you to the Minister of FCT because if not for the Minister of FCT, the situation and the story of the construction industry would have been so bad that the number of workers we have now would not have been stable,” he added.

…flags off construction of Arterial Road N20

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, on Thursday assured that President Bola Tinubu will sustain efforts to transform Abuja into a world-class city before the end of his tenure.

Wike said the capital’s development aligns with Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, pledging that no sector will be neglected under his leadership.

He gave the assurance at the flag-off of the construction of Arterial Road N20 (Solomon Lar Way), linking Road N5 (Obafemi Awolowo Way) to the Airport Expressway.

‎He said, “I don’t want a situation where you go to a site and then you pull out from the site, that will be very embarrassing. Now that you have moved to the site, remain on the site until the job is completed.

‎”All of us will attest to the fact that under the Renewed Hope Agenda of Mr President, we can see that the narrative has changed and I want to assure the residents of Abuja that by the grace of God, before the first tenure of Mr President, Abuja will compete with most of the cities in the world.

‎”That is a bank draft that I have given to you to go home with and continue to develop in other areas, not only in the cities but the satellite areas.

“Now we have also entered into the health sector. I have said that no sector will be left untouchable. We will make sure every sector is given attention that is required.

“You’ve heard the Acting Executive Secretary say that the Federal Executive Council awarded his contract in March this year. So, you would have asked yourself for six months, why is it that nothing has started after the award?

“Again, like I’ve always said, I will make sure that there are funds before we embark on any project. When the contract was awarded by the Federal Executive Council, the contractors were keen, and I told them, you cannot be more interested than us”.

The minister appealed to the company to prioritize employing local youths, highlighting the importance of job creation in the community.

He said, “With the number of jobs we are doing here in the city, you can see the number of people that engage one way or the other. If we are using 16 days to flag off projects of different categories, then imagine the number of persons that will be engaged in those projects. 16 days means 16 companies being involved in these projects.

Residents were urged to cooperate with the construction team to facilitate smooth project execution and potentially expedite completion.

He said, “I want to appeal to our youth, I want to appeal to the residents of this area, just like the Acting Head of Service said, please, we require your cooperation. With your cooperation, the company may finish this job before the time they were given. I’m always afraid when jobs are awarded, and they say two years or three years, I’m always afraid because I don’t like variation. So, Gilmore we will sit down again with the FCDA Acting Executive Secretary to reconsider this duration.

“The completion of this road is expected to boost economic activities in the area, increasing property values and benefiting local businesses. The new road will enhance connectivity, making it easier for residents to access key areas of the city, the minister said.

Wike: states now financially viable to embark on more projects

States are now more financially viable to embark on more capital projects than under previous administrations, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike declared yesterday.

Wike spoke in Ika Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State during the inauguration of the 15.13-kilometre Ika-Azumini Road, which links the state to Abia State.

The FCT minister hailed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for ending the oil subsidy regime.

He noted that the President’s bold decision paved the way for states to get more funds to do life-changing projects for their people.

“When I was governor, I recall how difficult it was to get money to do projects. Monies were used for the payment of oil subsidy. Now, you have a leader who came and removed that subsidy.

“Your governor has confirmed here that more money is coming to the state, and he is doing projects without owing any bank. He’s not going to leave debt for whoever comes after him.

“Why is he getting more money now? This is only possible under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. So, all things are getting better because the leadership of the present government has made money available to the states to carry out development.
