Wike knocks Sowore for calling President ‘criminal’

…says I have directed that doctor’s arrears be paid

Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, on Thursday, expressed disappointment over comments made by activist and former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, calling President Bola Tinubu a “criminal” in a post he shared on social media platforms.

Recall the federal government, on Tuesday, filed a five-count charge against Sowore for calling President Bola Tinubu a “criminal”.

Wike said Sowore should be happy that President Tinubu is a president who follows the rule of law, with a call that nobody should be encouraged to do that.

He said this at the official flag off of the construction of Arterial Road N1 from Wuye district to Ring Road 11.

The minister said, “This is a country where somebody on social media will say Mr President is a criminal; nothing will happen. You say all kinds of things you want to say, but nothing will happen. No matter how you see people criticize Trump, have you ever seen any American citizen on social media, or in public, say our President is a criminal? Have you heard that?

“But here, anybody can wake up in the morning and abuse the President, and we are happy. You are lucky you have a President who believes in the rule of law. You are lucky. Continue to be lucky. There are those you will meet that you won’t be lucky again”.

On the ongoing strike by the resident doctors in FCT, Wike said he has directed that their allowance be paid after due process.

Wike said he will continue to do the right things in the FCT, adding that no one can blackmail him.

He said, “The SSS called me that people said they will demonstrate, that we are paying attention to roads, we are not paying attention to health. I called the director, listened, and a demonstration is allowed everywhere. Nobody will blackmail me; nobody will stop me from doing what I think is right. And do it at the right time.

“I have never seen a country where we thrive on blackmail. This road is not my road, it’s not Wike’s road, it’s not Tinubu’s Road. It is a road that will open up economic activities and improve the welfare of the people here. So there’s nothing too special that we are doing because it’s only we that will use the road, no.

“The people who now say, look, they are being owed allowances, fine. We lost our Head of Service; we just appointed an acting Head of Service. And I said, Okay, go and check, how much are they talking about? They said Oh, they’ve not employed doctors.

“I said to the chairman of the Civil Service Commission, they said they’ve gotten a waiver, fine. What’s my own? Go and employ them. I am not a doctor; I’ve never thought of being a doctor. Go ahead and employ them. They say Oh, we’re not talking about improving health facilities.

“In the 2025 budget, for the Capital budget for health alone, we put N25bn. Ask them, when did you get our budget? We got our budget for July. We got our budget for July from the National Assembly. So, each time you see people, they won’t ask questions. If you want to enter political party A, you’re free to enter political party A and face me when the time comes. Don’t use Civil Service to play politics, no.

“If the Permanent Secretary Treasury brings the bill now, that is what the allowances are, what’s my own? Why would I hold it? They will pay. But know that everything has a procedure.

“But to tell me you will demonstrate, you will block. I told the Director of DSS, allow them to demonstrate, but nobody can stop me from holding this occasion today, not one.”

Wike began flagging off new road projects in the FCT after days of viral rumours of his ill-health.

Taking a taunt at people considered as detractors of the FCT Minister, his media aide, Lere Olayinka, wrote on social media, “We have not seen Online Medical Doctor Omoyele Sowore of Sahara Desert Medical Centre.”

Olayinka also posted a video of Wike’s arrival at the event on Thursday afternoon.

Recall that a statement signed by Olayinka earlier on Monday announced the schedule for the project commission, which will span 16 days.

Wike to commission two roads, flag off construction of 12 new roads in FCT

The Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, will on Thursday commence the flagging-off of the construction of 12 new roads and the provision of solar lights in some major areas in the Federal Capital City (FCC) and Expressways under the Light Up Abuja Programme.

Wike, PDP govs in mind game over party positions, presidential ticket

The battle for key offices in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its 2027 presidential ticket has entered the mind game phase between governors elected on the platform of the party and Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike ahead of the November national convention.

The two sides, according to sources, have been working hard at getting the best of deals at the Ibadan convention where officers who will run the party’s affairs and more importantly organise the primaries to pick the PDP candidates for the 2027 elections, will be picked.

Of particular interest to them are the positions of national chairman and national secretary.

The PDP National Executive Committee (NEC) had at its last meeting in Abuja adopted the Douye Diri Zoning Committee’s report which recommended that the national chairman be zoned to the north while the south should produce the presidential candidate and national secretary, among others.

Soon after the adoption of the report by the PDP NEC, leaders of the party in the Southeast, South-South and Southwest agreed on a formula to share the 11 party positions allocated to the south.

Under the agreement, Southeast will produce National Financial Secretary (NFS), Deputy National Secretary (DNS), National Women’s Leader (NWL) and Deputy National Youth Leader (DNYL) while the Southwest will have, in addition to the national secretary, National Auditor (NA) and Deputy National Organising Secretary (DNOS).

From the South-South will come Deputy National Chairman-South (DNC-S), National Publicity Secretary (NPS), Deputy National Treasurer (DNT) and Deputy National Legal Adviser (DNLA).

Party sources informed The Nation that interest groups in the three geo political zones with allegiance to the governors and Wike are engaged in intense networking to out manoeuvre one another as they gear up for the national convention.

They are looking at supporters who would not only deliver once elected but would remain loyal and committed to their respective groups.

The race for party offices becomes complex, especially in the south, since it is also expected to produce the presidential candidate.

In effect, the state that produces the next secretary cannot reasonably expect to vie for the presidential ticket.

Sources said party members in the Southwest are waiting for  Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, who is strongly believed to be eyeing the presidential ticket, to make a move to enable them decide who they would put forward to run for secretary.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan, who is speculated to be interested in staging a return in 2027, has kept the party guessing on his next move.

His aides have consistently rejected suggestions that he would not be joining the race.

Only last week, he met in Abuja with the 2023 presidential candidate of Labour Party, Mr Peter Obi, on ‘national issues’.

Details of their discussions are not yet known.

Party sources said Jonathan has not shown any inclination to discuss his speculated interest with PDP leaders even though he is often at his Goodluck Jonathan Foundation office, which is only about 12 minutes’ drive from the PDP national secretariat in Abuja.

Some party elders, including the Chairman of PDP Governors’ Forum, Bala Mohammed, are huge fans of Jonathan and even Obi.

However, some party members, including Ogun State PDP chieftain, Otunba Segun Sowunmi, continue to contend that Peter has been too far from the party and that he appears being too clever, to expect a ticket without going through party primaries.

The Southwest bloc, long aggrieved by its limited chances in the PDP hierarchy, is also positioning itself for more impactful inclusion.

In furtherance of its interests, the two PDP governors in the zone – Seyi Makinde and Ademola Adeleke – lobbied for Ibadan, the Oyo state capital, to host the national convention, and feelers indicate that Governor Makinde, who is considering a shot at the PDP’s 2027 presidential ticket, got a concession for Oyo State to produce a candidate for the National Secretary position zoned to the South and micro-zoned to the South West.

Some members of the party’s National Executive Committee are said to be making efforts to prevail on the National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, who remains a staunch ally of Wike, to take the position of Deputy National Chairman (South) being zoned to the South/South East but he does not appear to be too keen.

If the move succeeds, party leaders would have the crucial support of both Wike and Anyanwu who may be quite strong for the PDP Governors’ Forum and other party structures at the national convention.

Ahead of the national convention, some state chapters of PDP conducted their wards congresses yesterday.

    These include Edo and Adamawa.

Reports said the congresses were peaceful.

I will respond to Tambuwal’s comments soon – Wike

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister,  Nyesom Wike, will in due course, give appropriate response to all that former Sokoto Governor Aminu Tambuwal said last Friday.

The Minister’s Senior Special Assistant (SSA) on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, said Wike won’t let Tambuwal’s latest diatribe against him and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu go without response..

Tambuwal had said on Channels Television’s Politics Today last Friday his political choices had always been guided by principles of leadership and not by personal relationships.

He added he would support former Vice President Atiku Abubakar over Wike, if he had to make a choice on who should lead the country.

Responding, the FCT Minister’s Spokesperson said: “I have been inundated with calls, especially from journalists, seeking the Minister’s reaction.

“Apart from what he said against the Minister, Tambuwal also cast aspersions on President Tinubu and such will not go unresponded to.

“Therefore, what I can say is that the Minister will respond accordingly.  He will definitely tell Nigerians what a betrayal is and what it means to have integrity.

“Till then, let’s keep our fingers crossed.”

Local contractor to Wike: Engage us more to improve FCT

President of the Gosima Group, Dr. Gideon Chidiebere Osi, has emphasized the crucial role local contractors can play in the development of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Osi made this known while speaking to reporters yesterday in Abuja during the company’s 2025 Management Training Program, with the theme; “Leadership Training on Improved Project Management, Process Standardization, and Organizational Structure”.

He commended the current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, stating; “So far, the current minister of FCT has been doing great. Abuja is awake for the first time after many years. And we commend him.”

Osi advised the minister to sanction any local contractor that does not perform to expectation.

The president urged the minister to ensure increased participation of Nigerian companies in FCT projects, citing the importance of sustainability.

“Let him do everything possible to ensure that more Nigerian companies are involved in the activities and projects in FCT. That is the only way we can have sustainability,” he said.

He expressed concerns about the heavy reliance on foreign contractors, adding, “When the foreign companies are gone, the local ones are not capable enough to move on because they were never supported, were never developed.”

Osi highlighted the capabilities of Nigerian professionals, saying, “The universities we have are trained engineers, trained architects, trained quantity surveyors.

“Where would they go and work? There’s no way in the world that you will have a better team than what you have in Nigeria.”

He challenged stereotypes about local contractors, asserting, “The notion that local contractors always use substandard materials during construction is all giving a dog a bad name to kill it. It is not true.”

The group president argued for recognition and opportunity for local contractors: “If proposing that what is paid to foreign contractors should also be paid to local contractors, absolutely.

“It is the same work they are doing. Whatever you are going to pay to foreign contractors, pay to local contractors as well. Give them the opportunity to excel. It is for the good of your people.”

Osi also called for accountability in the industry: “Local contractors who are awarded projects and these projects are not executed should be prosecuted accordingly. The fact is that crime anywhere is crime.

“When you are given an assignment, deliver this assignment with commitment for the sake of your country, for the sake of your unborn generation.”

On enhancing support for local construction companies, Osi emphasized the private sector’s role in job creation.

“There is one thing to give people projects and some other thing to pay for it. People should be encouraged, enable environment created, support given to local companies,” he said.

He highlighted the disconnect between educational training and job opportunities, warning, “If we do, we will have so many people coming out of school jobless, and begin to think of how to survive.”

The Gosima Group’s training program involved 45 management staff, with plans to disseminate knowledge to over 300 employees.

Osi further expressed his commitment to ongoing training as an “investment that must continue,” reiterating the importance of nurturing local talent for national progress.

  • Appraising Wike: A candid political prognosis

Appraising Wike: A candid political prognosis

    By Mobolaji Sanusi

“A good example is not the main thing in influencing others, it is the only thing.” — Anonymous

Nyesom Wike has firmly emerged as a celebrated power broker under the current political dispensation. From historical records, he didn’t just arrive at this destination without fighting battles. Some he won by sheer providential interventions, others with unbridled political resilience. But one thing is clear, he has, within the past ten years, established himself as a political warlord with a big war chest and vast connections in the right places.

There are several instances to buttress these assertions. For example, his reelection as his home state’s local government chairman, after serving his first term was guaranteed by the accidental meeting and intervention that had a touch of providence of then governor, Dr. Peter Odili, who vetoed the truncation of his second term candidacy for Obio-Akpor Local Government Area when his name was almost removed from the list.

Later, he moved to join the tortuous battle for the restoration of Rotimi Amaechi’s governorship ticket and after the Apex Court’s miracle verdict that proclaimed him governor, Amaechi compensated him because of his committed roles in his ascension struggles by appointing him as his Chief of Staff. And when they fell apart, he meandered his way to emerge as a minister of the federal republic of Nigeria under the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan. He used the opportunity of that position to successfully launch the battle to succeed Amaechi as governor and ruled the state for two terms of eight years.

Unlike other governors before him in Rivers State who failed to install their preferred successors, Wike set the precedent of handpicking his successor in Governor Sim Fubara. But against his own public pronouncement that after his  governorship duty, he would not jostle for any political appointment having failed to secure the vice-presidential slot to veteran presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, GCON, Wike resurfaced in Abuja where President Bola Tinubu, GCFR, graciously appointed him as the high profile minister of the Federal Capital Territory(FCT). The first southerner to occupy the position.

In Abuja, he battled the Abuja mafia that saw him as attempting to unsettle the progress-retarding status quo ante cartel in the FCT. While slugging it out with the cartel, his installed successor in his home state, Fubara, was fomenting the battle for political independence which Wike wasn’t ready to give.

As a man who is used to fighting battles, even at the shortest notice, he fought Fubara to sustain his domestic political survival and to preserve his inexorably rising political profile in Abuja. In the end, he taught Fubara a great lesson by not only making the state ungovernable for him but in also stimulating a volatile political environment through his foot soldiers on ground that led to the imposition of an emergency rule in Rivers. With emergency rule in place, the contentious local government elections conducted by Fubara was annulled, in supposed obedience to the apex court’s judgment.

Finally last Saturday, a fresh local government election conducted in the twenty-three local governments in the state returned Wike as the indisputable godfather of Rivers State politics. The exercise adjudged by observers to be peaceful, surprisingly saw the All Progressives Congress(APC) won twenty councils while the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state of which Wike is a member, won a paltry three council areas.

Wike, with his delicate hybrid brand of politics, is now firmly in control of the grassroots across Rivers state.

The FCT minister can henceforth reassert his authority over APC and PDP machineries and also be in-charge of the local councils’ chairmen, councillors and more importantly, grassroots mobilisation. He is strategically brainy enough to rename his group after the president’s political shibboleth: Renewed Hope Agenda bloc. By this nomenclature, his loyal tendencies in both APC and PDP are now firmly under his influence ahead of the 2027 general election. Effectively now, Wike, not Fubara, when the emergency rule is lifted, will dictate the modus of delegates’ selection and equally who gets what ticket in the upcoming and subsequent primaries. His national political influence as a strong south-south leader is now gradually, if not already solidified.

A subregional powerbroker in Wike, if he manages his affairs well, is now in the making. He can now consolidate his networks and loyalty base as a trusted ally of the president. But for how long can Wike play the president’s game? Except he decides to commit self-inflicted political suicide, his loyalty to the president cannot falter between now and 2027. Again. Would he have helped our current president if Atiku had picked him as his running mate in late 2022? After 2027, especially if Wike is not reappointed or that his FCT portfolio, which today stands unlikely, is changed, won’t his current disposition to the president change?

By 2031, ceteris paribus, apologies to the economists, when the president would have finished his second term in office, won’t Wike turn against him if he thinks political calculations preferred by the president are not favourable to his aspirations?

Yours sincerely is asking these questions because of the cautionary aphorism of that Chinese philosopher that championed personal and governmental morality, Confucius when he said: “The man who asks a question is a fool for a minute. The man who does not ask is a fool for life.” Because l do not want to be a fool for life in view of Wike’s antecedents in actions and words, which are not favourable to the president and even the APC that is the central government party. His 2022/23 actions and uttered words most especially, lacked political integrity and character.

Barrister Wike spewed out statements and put up conducts against the president and his party that should make a right thinking person ponder on whether his seeming current “absolute political loyalty to the president” is not something fleeting and for his current political survival? In our assessments of persons, Frank Herbert admonished us to ask: “Do actions agree with words? There’s your measure of reliability. Never confine yourself to the words.”

For a concise juxtaposition, past and present actions and words should be used if we’re desirous of arriving at an empirically appropriate conclusions on the FCT minister.

Wike was once caught on camera espousing denigrative statements on our president and APC: Lets highlight two instances and the first being where he alluded to one of our dear president’s campaign statements; he derisively enthused: “I heard people declaring for APC saying that they want to continue the good job of Mr President (Buhari). Is it the good job of people dying everyday? Is it the good job of naira falling everyday? I feel so ashamed that we have gotten to the level of sycophancy. Where people will come and say they want to continue the good job of Buhari….What is the good job of Buhari? Is hunger the good job? Is poverty and insecurity the good job? Or the economy falling the good job? It’s such a shameful thing. I can’t believe that someone will come out in today’s Nigeria and say I want to continue where Buhari has stopped.”

The second being at a point in time when asked if he’ll leave PDP for APC: He sarcastically declared: “Leave for where? I presently have malaria that can be treated easily and I will go and look for cancer that will kill me immediately?….Is the APC a party? A party that has killed Nigerians? No way, I can’t leave the PDP for such a party. Any fight we engage in the PDP is inside the PDP and that is where I will fight. If they like, they injure me there or I injure them but I won’t ever run away. Though I know they cannot injure me….That is where we will fight our fight but to leave the PDP that has common malaria for the APC that has cancer, no, it can’t happen.”

Who knows what Wike will say about our current president if they developed strained political relationships somewhere along the line? If for nothing, we have seen and heard words and dispositions of Wike to some of his past political benefactors including Dr Peter Odili, Dr & Mrs Goodluck Jonathan, Rotimi Amaechi and others.

Yours sincerely is only just being futuristically cautious by drawing our dear president’s attention to what a politically cantankerous Wike could do, after all, Wolfgang Schauble once said that “reliability is the precondition for trust.” Also, Confucius’ disdain for unreliable people under whatever guise is unsparing when he referred to them as “utterly useless.”

It is necessary to point out that this piece is not out to denigrate Wike who is widely seen, acknowledged and justly celebrated as “Mr Projects” during his 8-year tenure as governor of Rivers State. The same commendable template of projects’ initiatives, he has been implementing in the FCT infrastructural turnaround, as its hardworking minister.

Most times, habits develop into character and following from this, the reliability of Wike’s political character is somehow questionable and to protect our President, this necessitates the need to advert our minds to this detrimental political temperament of Wike and to prepare an antidote for curtailing him when the time comes.

Besides the aforementioned, ride on the presidential beloved Barrister Nyesom Wike, the Mr Projects of the FCT.

Eid-el-Maulud: Pray for Tinubu’s success, Wike tells Nigerians

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, on Friday, advised Nigerians, particularly residents of the FCT, to use the occasion of Eid-el-Maulud to pray for the success of President Bola Tinubu.

Wike, in his goodwill message to mark the birth of Prophet Muhammad, appreciated the President’s support for the FCT Administration and his commitment to the development of the nation’s capital.

He said such prayers would further strengthen the administration’s efforts in uplifting the people and improving their quality of life.

The Minister reaffirmed the FCT Administration’s commitment to expanding infrastructure, enhancing medical care, strengthening emergency response, and ensuring security for both residents and visitors.

Wike also urged residents to meet their civic obligations by obeying traffic rules, paying taxes, and supporting government programs that promote social cohesion, economic growth, and environmental sustainability.

While commending the diverse communities in the FCT for their commitment to peace and harmony, the minister expressed appreciation to law enforcement agencies, healthcare workers, and essential service providers for their sacrifices in keeping the city safe and functional.
