    Wike’s OAU lecture

Barrister Ezenwo Nyesom Wike, former Local Government Chairman, former Chief of Staff to the Governor of Rivers State, former Minister of State for Education, former Governor of Rivers State and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, was at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU)’s iconic Oduduwa Hall, Ile-Ife, where he delivered the well-attended and well-received 5 June, 2025 Distinguished Personality Lecture of the university titled “Nigeria of our dreams.”

In the 24-page lecture, Barrister Nyesom Wike remarked: “In an era when leadership is often misunderstood or misjudged through partisan prisms, I consider your invitation a balm and your recognition, a vindication and a challenge.” He then declared: “I thank the Governing Council and the University Management for this remarkable gesture, which I do not take for granted.”

The Minister noted: “Nigeria, as we know it today, was conceived in the crucible of a paradox: consummated by the colonial imperative of amalgamation, yet nurtured by the enduring hope of unity in diversity. From the very beginning, there has always existed a powerful dream that this vast land of many tongues and traditions would someday become a beacon of harmony, justice, and prosperity.”

He observed that contrariwise, “The Nigeria we see today is not the Nigeria we dreamt of. … We stumbled on the jagged rocks of corruption, danced too long with the ghosts of mediocrity, and surrendered too frequently to the paralyzing cynicism of despair. Our institutions, once envisioned as pillars of progress, have buckled under the weight of impunity and ethnicity. The rule of law is often treated as an inconvenience.”

He continued: “Insecurity festers across the land. Infrastructure lies in ruins. Our public school system is gasping for breath, and our economy is reeling under the weight of bad policies, runaway inflation, and a currency in free fall from a time when one dollar exchanged for one naira, to today, when over 1,500 naira chases a single dollar. The Nigerian passport has become a red flag at foreign airports. It is a symbol of suspicion rather than pride, our global image tarnished by decades of corruption, fraud, and state failure.”

He also noted: “Religious institutions, which ought to be moral beacons, have joined the parade. … The litany of woes is long, and for many Nigerians, the dream has faded into a nightmare. … And yet, in the face of this bleak landscape, we must ask: Is all hope lost? Is this the end of the Nigerian story? Can we no longer dream of a nation that works, that cares, that inspires?”

Wike opined that reclaiming Nigeria’s dreams required a framework with pillars, including leadership, infrastructural development, democracy and good governance, the rule of law and justice, quality education, health and human development, economic prosperity and inclusive growth, security and national cohesion, unity in diversity, cultural renaissance and moral rebirth, and strengthening local government and community resilience.

On leadership, Wike said: “Many scholars agree that the greatest challenge confronting Nigeria and chronically militating against her development is the plague of bad and mediocre leadership.” He thus declared: “A leader of our dreams must be one who is prepared to lead. … This leader must have the courage and audacity to act, build, innovate and generally expand the frontiers of development with a hands-on approach that would emphasize excellence over mediocrity.”

The FCT Minister then declared: “Our current president [Bola Ahmed Tinubu] embodies a lot of the qualities that I have stated above. … Leaders before him all spoke about the evil of fuel subsidy, but none had the courage to dare the blackmail of removing it. Tinubu did and is fittingly grappling with the inevitable, unintended and sometimes orchestrated consequences of this removal.”

Wike continued: “The security situation is being addressed through proper funding and the training and retraining of our army and other security forces. There is no doubt that with the recent Presidential approval for the recruitment of forest guards across the country to take charge of our forests, bandits and terrorists would no longer find incubation points and free territories to operate.”

On infrastructural development, the Minister noted: “In this journey towards realizing the Nigeria of our dreams, it is both necessary and noble to acknowledge the efforts of President Tinubu. … Through massive investment in infrastructure, President Tinubu has demonstrated a commitment to tackling the inherited complexities of our federation with candour and courage.”

The FCT Minister also observed: “The rapid transformation of Abuja is a clear testimony to the President’s dedication to infrastructural revolution in Nigeria. It goes without saying that, although I drive the process in Abuja, it would not have been possible without the overwhelming and ceaseless support of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR.”

On democracy and good governance, the guest lecturer opined: “At the heart of the Nigerian dream lies the vision of a thriving democratic culture. … In this vision, public office is not a privilege to be exploited, but a sacred trust to be honoured, a platform for transformation, not self-enrichment. Good governance is the engine that drives this dream, ensuring that institutions function efficiently and equitably, and that the government remains responsive to the needs and aspirations of the people.”

On the rule of law and justice, Wike declared: “The Nigeria we dream of is one where the rule of law is not merely enshrined in the constitution but enforced with courage and impartiality, without fear or favour. … Central to this vision is an independent and courageous judiciary, immune from manipulation, and committed to safeguarding human rights and upholding justice for all.”

On quality education, the Minister remarked: “At the core of the Nigerian dream lies the unwavering belief that qualitative and functional education is the bedrock of national development. … From nursery school to the university level, education in the Nigeria of our dreams must be accessible, inclusive, and relevant, reaching every child regardless of geography, gender, financial status, or ability.” He noted further: “In this regard, for instance, the establishment of the Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) is … a monumental step towards realizing the Nigeria of our dreams, a nation built on knowledge, equity, and opportunity.”

On health and human development, the lecturer said: “At the heart of the Nigerian dream is the unfailing commitment to the health and well-being of every citizen … We envision a Nigeria where health is not a privilege but a right … This vision moves beyond hospital walls to encompass access to clean water, proper sanitation, and a resilient public health system capable of responding decisively to crises.”

On economic prosperity and inclusive growth, Wike said: “We dream of a Nigeria where prosperity is not the preserve of a privileged few but a shared reality that cuts across regions, social classes, and sectors. … Critical to this vision is the creation of a citizenry empowered with self-reliance and control over critical aspects of their lives, food, shelter, education, and health, with the ultimate goal of eradicating poverty and underdevelopment.”

On security and national cohesion, Wike observed: “Security is the bedrock upon which every meaningful national aspiration must rest, for no dream can flourish in an atmosphere of fear or instability. At the heart of the Nigeria we envision is a society where every citizen feels safe in their homes, in their communities, and across the federation. … Ultimately, security is not just about protecting borders, it is about protecting hope. It is about building a society where every Nigerian can aspire, strive, and succeed without fear, a nation where peace is the norm, not the exception.”

On unity in diversity, Wike said: “Fundamental to the Nigerian dream lies a profound recognition: our diversity is not a burden, but a blessing, a source of strength rather than division. … The Nigeria we dream of does not erase differences but celebrates them; it does not impose uniformity but inspires unity.”

Furthermore, he noted: “At the heart of many of Nigeria’s challenges is a deficit of trust between leaders and followers, ethnic groups, religious communities, and even neighbours. Rebuilding this trust requires more than lofty rhetoric; it demands honesty, transparency, fairness, and justice. Our national policies must be inclusive, participatory, and responsive to both current needs and historical grievances.”

On cultural renaissance and moral rebirth, the lecturer said: “The dream of Nigeria demands not just institutional reform, but a profound moral and cultural renaissance. … We must return to the timeless values that once defined us: honesty, hard work, mutual respect, and community spirit. Nigeria of our dreams is one where our cultural heritage is preserved, our stories are told with pride, and our values form the moral compass that guides both leadership and followership.”

On strengthening local government and community resilience, Wike observed: “Without functional, transparent, and empowered local governments, the dream of national transformation will remain a distant illusion. The Nigeria of our dreams is one where development does not hover above in abstraction, but reaches the very doorsteps of the people, through decentralized governance, fiscal responsibility, and vibrant, community-led initiatives. The status, structure, staffing, operations, and funding of the local government system are not mere administrative concerns – they are central to the survival and consolidation of democracy itself.”

Wike averred that Nigeria is “bruised, perhaps battered, but never broken,” and that “her voice is rising above the din of disillusionment, summoning her sons and daughters, at home and abroad, not to mourn her fate, but to mold her future.” He also counselled: “And above all, we must act not because it is convenient, but because it is essential. … Let us write a new story, not of how Nigeria collapsed under the weight of its contradictions, but of how it rose on the strength of its convictions.”

In concluding, Wike admonished: “Nigeria of our dreams will not fall into our laps by wishing; it will be won by working. It will demand of us not only passion, but patience. Not only inspiration, but perspiration. Not only courage in moments of glory, but character in seasons of testing. … Let us rise above cynicism and mediocrity, and embrace vision, sacrifice, and purpose. Let us dare to believe that greatness is not beyond us, but within us, waiting to be awakened. Let history record that we gathered here not to mourn what Nigeria has become, but to proclaim what Nigeria must be.”

The content of Minister Nyesom Wike’s cerebral and illuminating lecture was remarkably broad in its coverage and on point. The style was dignified and engaging, with an effective dose of soundbites and claptraps. The lecture impressively exemplified the positive value of inviting such distinguished, sometimes controversial, personalities to share their thoughts and experiences on an elevated academic platform. For this, the authorities of OAU truly deserve commendation.

    • State’s Reps caucus blasts Dickson over emergency rule position

The suspended Governor of Rivers State, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has reached out afresh to his estranged godfather, Nyesom Wike, as part of  ongoing effort to patch up their soured relationship.

Fubara is understood to have visited the Federal Capital Territory Minister in his Abuja residence on Monday for peace talks.

Details of their discussion were not immediately available, but the meeting came amid fresh calls from some quarters for the reinstatement of the suspended governor.

Some of Fubara’s supporters had even hoped that President Bola Tinubu would lift the governor’s suspension and terminate the emergency rule in the state during his Democracy Day speech at the National Assembly on Thursday.

One of them, Senator Seriake Dickson, expressed disappointment that President Tinubu did not declare an end to the Rivers State emergency rule on Thursday. He likened the current administration in Rivers to a military government because it is headed by a retired military officer.

But Dickson’s statement yesterday drew a sharp response from the Rivers State caucus in the National Assembly.

The legislators questioned the rights of the former Bayelsa State governor to speak on the emergency rule, saying that the state’s Administrator is a retired military officer.

Leader of the caucus, Kingsley Chinda, told reporters that the emergency rule was clearly a matter of necessity aimed at restoring law and order in the state.

He said this was attested to by the suspended governor who recently thanked the President for declaring the state of emergency.

They accused Dickson of deceiving Fubara to make continuous mistakes that allegedly got him suspended.

Chinda asked the Senate Committee on Ethics to immediately commence an investigation into what he called Dickson’s un-parliamentary utterances.

“Let it be categorically stated that Rivers State is not under military rule. The current Administrator of the state, Vice Admiral Retired Ibok-Ete Ibas,  is a retired military officer, just as Senator Seriake Dickson is himself a retired Police Corporal, but a serving senator,” Chinda said.

“Both of them cannot be serving personnel of the Armed Forces. The implication of retirement is clear.  Once an officer retires, he becomes a civilian, and any leadership role he occupies is subject to civilian laws, norms and democratic oversight.

“To label the current administration as military rule is therefore misleading and intellectually disingenuous.

“The declaration of the state of emergency in River State was a necessary constitutional intervention aimed at preserving peace, protecting lives and restoring institutional order.

“The decision was not taken lightly. It was prompted by the rising tide of political instability and executive rascality within the state.

“Also, the disregard for democratic institutions was one of the reasons why we had that declaration.

“This position was also affirmed by the Supreme Court judgment of February 28, 2025, wherein the Supreme Court clearly stated that there was indeed no government in the state the way it was being operated then.

“It is imperative to highlight that the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, acted swiftly and decisively to prevent the escalation of violence and systemic breakdown that loomed over our beloved state. The bold step averted a full-blown crisis.

“Without that timely intervention, orchestrated chaos would have overwhelmed the mechanism of governance and civil society in the state.

“The state of emergency declared in Rivers State is not a breach of the constitution. Rather, it is a legitimate tool provided in section 305 of our constitution to restore sanity when democratic structures are under serious threat.

“In fact, only recently, the suspended governor himself, Governor Sim Fubara, publicly thanked Mr. President for saving the day when he declared the state of emergency in River State.

“Therefore, Senator Sereike Dickson, the retired Police Corporal, cannot cry more than the bereaved.

“It is extremely unfortunate that a former governor, a serving senator and a retired police corporal, who by virtue of his police training is supposed to maintain law and order, decided to make undemocratic utterances capable of causing a breakdown of law and order in River State, whilst indigenes of the state are still on the path of seeking for peace for us to ensure that we protect the lives of our people in this state.

“It is on record that Senator Dickson, in one of his numerous visits to the suspended governor, promoted ethnic bigotry and biases that misled the governor and ultimately led to his suspension.

“Senator Dickson is at it again.

“With the antecedent of Senator Dickson, we clearly hold that he is not qualified. He is grossly incompetent and unfit to claim to protect democracy.

“When he had the opportunity as a chief executive, his records are there. They speak for themselves.

“Consequently, the caucus questions Senator Seriake Dickson, the River State caucus, unequivocally and clearly sends a clear caution and warning to Senator Seriake Dickson to stay clear from inciting Rivers people into any form of violence or attempting to cause any breakdown of law and order in our state.

“He is from Bayelsa State. If he wants to cause problem or crisis anywhere, let him go back to his home and do so.

“We will also call on the security agencies to put a tab on him and his actions, which are likely and capable of causing a breach of peace, particularly now that the state is working towards restoring peace amongst our citizens.”

Also speaking, Senator Orwell Onyesor said it was their collective decision to condemn the actions of Senator Dickson, adding that Bayelsa West where Dickson represents needs more of the activism he was exhibiting in Rivers matters

The Nation gathered that Fubara’s supporters called The Simplified Family had made elaborate preparation in expectation of his reinstatement by the President on Thursday.

Many of them were said to have watched the President’s session at the National Assembly on television, waiting eagerly for his pronouncement on Fubara which never came, although he later transmitted communication to the Senate seeking confirmation for some appointments made by Ibas.

President Tinubu in the letter sought confirmation for Ibas’ appointment of members of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RISIEC), Rivers State Primary Healthcare Board, Rivers State Civil Service Commission and Rivers State Local Government Civil Service Commission.

The letter was read on the floor of the Senate by Akpabio and was referred to the Ad-hoc Committee on Emergency Rule.

Dickson described the letter read by Akpabio as provocative and wondered why the Senate President could read what he described as an undemocratic document on Democracy Day.

Dickson later on that day delivered his Democracy Day address accusing President Tinubu of missing a golden opportunity to restore democratic rule in Rivers State.

He said that by not mentioning anything about Rivers in his address, Tinubu had displayed undemocratic tendencies.

But some people quickly replied Dickson and reminded him of how he allegedly led thugs to harass and beat up a judge and lawyers including a pregnant lawyer at the Federal High Court in Yenagoa over a case he was interested in.

A member of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, Timi Agala-Omubo, criticised Dickson’s democracy day sanctimony and recalled how he failed to recognise minority opposition lawmakers in Bayelsa when he was the governor.

He accused Dickson of frustrating the inauguration of three members elected on opposition party platforms.

He wrote: “I admire Senator Henry Seriake Dickson for his dogged disposition to whatever course he believes in, and his courage to speak eloquently without fear.

“However; like most mortals if not all, he also has the two or many sides of man: probating and reprobating, blowing hot and cold depending on the circumstances when it favours him, and when it does not.

“I picked the above part of his video as he bemoans his minority status in the Senate as he claimed to have been ignored by the Senate President.

“The Senator Dickson today is not different from the Governor Dickson who prevented three Assembly members-elect from being inaugurated into the 5th Bayelsa State House of Assembly for several months for no other possible reason than that they were of the minority APGA, Labour, and ADC, and not of his ruling party, PDP.

“He is also not different from the Governor Dickson who in 2019 declared in public that he recognised only the 19 PDP members-elect into the 6th Assembly; and that the other four APC members-elect including myself were unknown to him, and unrecognised.”

Sources told The Nation that Fubara has failed to meet with the pro-Wike state legislators who were also suspended under the emergency rule.

A principal officer of the suspended House of Assembly said: “You’ll recall that he met with his predecessor and Minister of FCT, Nyesom Wike, who told him to meet with other aggrieved stakeholders.

“He met with President Tinubu after meeting with Wike. But since then till now, the suspended governor has not met with anybody.

“He recently went to see the President in Lagos, but that will not guarantee his coming back. Even if he comes back, remember that the National Assembly has not passed the Rivers Budget.

“This means that the House of Assembly will also come back and the National Assembly will return the budget to the state Assembly and the crisis will continue.

“As we speak, Fubara has not even met with those he himself called the three wise men. These men, OCJ Okocha, Sargent Awuse and Ferdinand Alabraba, were instrumental to his election.

“So, no reconciliation has taken place”.

A former Local Government Chairman of Emohua Local Government Area, Dr Chidi Lloyd, said there was nothing exciting about Fubara returning to office without reconciliation.

Lloyd said there has been no reconciliatory meeting between Fubara and the state legislators.

He insisted that Fubara was playing the ostrich.

“What is the hullabaloo about his coming back? He has been told many times to go and make peace. Assuming he comes back, has the problem with the House Assembly been resolved?

“The lawmakers will throw him out because there is nothing like the Chief Judge setting up any panel. The Supreme Court has already itemised all his sins.

“I am bothered about governance in Rivers. Others have moved on. See what is happening in Enugu and Delta states. That is our priority.

“Fubara is playing the ostrich. Going to see the President and taking photograph, does it stop the problem?

A former President of the Ijaw Youths Council (IYC) Worldwide has been courageously advising Fubara to show leadership in the reconciliation by driving the process.

He said it would be dangerous for Fubara to return to office without first dispensing with the reconciliation process.

He recalled that he had earlier advised Fubara to deepen the reconciliation after his first meeting with Wike.

Fubara first visited Wike last April to seek reconciliation.

He also met with the President and told his supporters that the President meant well in declaring the state of emergency in Rivers.

The situation, according to him, saved the state from chaos.

Wike tackles Dele Momodu over comment on June 12 struggle

The publisher of Ovation magazine, Dele Momodu, has been advised to desist from what has been described as persistent and unwarranted attacks on the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike.

In a statement issued by Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media to the FCT Minister, Momodu was criticised for his continued criticism of Wike, which Olayinka described as obsessive and irrational.

“The self-appointed chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) appears to have graduated from psychology to psychosis, such that he now sees Wike in everything he does, even in his sleep,” Olayinka said.

He questioned Momodu’s political relevance, pointing out that during the PDP presidential primary in 2022, not a single delegate voted for him.

“Was Wike responsible for that? Or why this obsession with anything Wike?” he asked.

Olayinka was reacting to Momodu’s remarks during a national television interview, where the media mogul questioned Wike’s role in Nigeria’s democratic history, asking, “Where was Wike during the June 12 struggle?”

Read Also: June 12: CAN urges govt’s sustained action to overcome insecurity

In response, Olayinka fired back, “Where was Dele Momodu too when Nigeria was being founded? Was he among the founding fathers of Nigeria, living in the country?”

The exchange marks the latest in a series of public spats between the two political figures.

He said, “Since in the warped mindset of Dele Momodu, those who were not part of the June 12 struggle are not entitled to speak about democracy in Nigeria, I think those who were not part of the struggle for the independence of Nigeria should also not live in the country.”

While admonishing Dele Momodu to stop lying about his involvement in the June 12 struggle, Olayinka said, “He only used the June 12 struggle to Japa. He didn’t struggle for anything other than his own well-being.

“Those who genuinely struggled for June 12 didn’t use the children of the man who incarcerated MKO Abiola till he died in custody, as a model for any photo book, as done by Dele Momodu.

“They also did not go about visiting the mansions of Military Generals to take pictures for publication as done by Dele Momodu with his Ovation Photo Book.

“Therefore, when the register of those who fought for the actualisation of June 12 is being taken, people like Dele Momodu, who used it to hustle, should stop forcing their names into it.”

  • Wike: Tinubu’s performance has shattered coalition gang up

Wike: Tinubu’s performance has shattered coalition gang up

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s performance has dismantled the gang-up by opposition politicians to form a coalition against him.

Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Nyesome Wike said this yesterday during the inauguration of Arterial Road N16 in Katampe District, Abuja.

It was the second day of the inauguration of projects undertaken by the FCT in two years.

The President inaugurated the completed stretch of Shehu Shagari Way, linking the Nnamdi Azikiwe Expressway to Wole Soyinka Way through Katampe and adjoining districts.

The project, which includes a major interchange and access roads, is part of the Abuja master plan stalled for years before being revived under Wike’s leadership.

President Tinubu emphasised that his administration will continue to prioritise service delivery and national development over political grandstanding.

He said: “We will continue to build; we will continue to serve the people, no matter how much the naysayers pursue their politics.

“We did not ignore this project. We did not worry about protests. The government has played its part.”

Describing the project commissioning as a milestone, President Tinubu added: “This project represents more than a stretch of asphalt. It affirms our commitment to urban transformation under our Renewed Hope Agenda.

“What was once missing as a link is now a modern, functional and durable infrastructure.”

He praised Wike’s leadership and collaborative approach to delivering the project.

President Tinubu stressed: “Once again, I commend Wike and his team. He could not achieve this alone without collaboration as a team builder and a team player. You have proved that teamship is the hallmark of good leadership,” President Tinubu said.

The President said he would deploy infrastructure as a tool for national growth, social inclusion, and economic transformation.

He said: “Infrastructure is not a luxury; it is a necessity. It is the bedrock of national competitiveness, growth, social integration and economic opportunity.”

President Tinubu noted that Nigeria’s future lies in its ability to connect cities, communities, and industries with world-class infrastructure.

He added: “There is no way industrialisation will flourish without good roads. The government is also investing in roads, rail, power, healthcare, education and digital infrastructure.

“This corridor was underdeveloped for years, despite its central role in the Abuja master plan. Today, that narrative has changed.

“This road will ease traffic congestion around Central Abuja and improve connectivity to developing districts.

“It will stimulate housing and business growth while serving as a foundation for future city integration.”

President Tinubu urged residents and stakeholders to take ownership of the new road and preserve it as a community asset.

He said: “The road belongs to the community and citizens of Abuja and us as the federal government. I urge you to protect it and use it wisely.”

The President thanked the FCT community for its cooperation during the road construction, including those who were relocated to make way for the project.

He said: “Thank you very much for the cooperation. We thank the Minister of FCT too for relocating your community with peace and good compensation.”

    Wike: coalition killed

Wike said President Tinubu’s infrastructural development has killed the coalition moves by the opposition.

He vowed to continue to support Tinubu’s Administration.

Wike said: “Some people, whatever you do, will not be happy; many of them were born not to be happy.

“Under Tinubu, contractors now have confidence in the government. Your good work has killed the coalition in Nigeria.

“Mr. President, let me first of all convey the happiness and appreciation of the people of the city. I’m sure that when you came down from the vehicle, you saw how people were happily praising you.

“That’s to tell you they appreciate and recognise the good work you are doing. There are some people, whatever you do, they will never be happy.

“They were born not to be happy, and so there is nothing you can do about it. But those who appreciate, who are happy, you can see how elated they are.

“Let me let you know that this road was awarded by your administration. It is not one of those projects that were inherited.

“Having worked with you for a few years, I’ve seen how passionate you are about contracts and abandonment of contracts.

“This job was awarded by the Federal Executive Council last September, and we flagged off this project in October.

“I told the contractors, listen, I don’t want to hear complaints. Whatever it takes you to do your job, do it. If I pay you during the rainy season, you must work during the rainy season.

“If I pay you in the dry season, you must work in the dry season. I don’t want to hear that, oh, the rain was too much.

“Return the money so that we can keep it. After the rain, we can pay you. You can’t keep our money when we have paid you, then you say it is raining, no. Send our money back.”

The minister added: “I’m quite elated. Initially, I was sceptical about the contractor CGC until you appointed us sometime in August 2023.

“The road from the Presidential Villa to Asokoro, that interchange, I couldn’t believe that we can have it and it was done by the CGC. Everybody saw how that place was. So I started having that confidence in them.

“I told CGC, are you sure that Mr. President will commission this (N16) road project in his second year in office? They said yes. I said: Are you sure? They said yes.

“Should I include it as part of the project to be commissioned? They said yes. I said, see, don’t look for my problem. Now you have made a promise, you have to keep to the promise.

“Let me tell you one thing you have done Mr. President, that has created confidence in contractors today. This road stopped somewhere.

“As I speak to you now, companies and contractors are competing among themselves for us to just award the job.

“Most of them have gone and started without even giving them the initial mobilisation. That is confidence-building. And that’s what we’ve created.

“I want to thank the management of CGC. Not one contract that is awarded under the FCT would be abandoned.

“By the time you do your third year in office next year, you will see that virtually all the contracts awarded under you as the president and the chairman of the Federal Executive Council will have been completed to the glory of God, and no contractor will be left unpaid. They know that in my dictionary, there’s no variation. So if I don’t have the money, I tell them, hold on! No pressure.

“So I’m happy. This road again leads to all the judges’ quarters, the Court of Appeal, the Federal High Court, and the Federal Capital Territory High Court. By the grace of God, I don’t know the particular day where that will be commissioned. But I know that they have finished it and the judges’ quarters are almost ready.

“Your Excellency, we cannot thank you enough to have the opportunity to be part of this goings-on in the country. I hardly watched some stations but sometimes, I don’t know how spiritually I was touched to just tune and start watching. This morning, I was touched and was watching. I didn’t know that people can be in pain. I didn’t know. And now I know there are such people that are pained. My duty now is to make sure to continue to give them high blood pressure. As ‘e dey pain them, e go dey sweet us’. As e dey sweet us, e go dey pain to them. That’s my job. I’ll be happy every time, moving, laughing. And then they will be there fighting and shouting and killing themselves.

“So, Mr. President, we want to thank you that we are part of this, what is going on, the revolution that’s going on. Your good work has killed the coalition. I was thinking that truly, there would be a coalition. So, I told my people, make sure that every national television must hook in so they can see what’s happening every day.

“If they turn to ADBN, they’re watching Mr. President. If they turn to TVC, it’s Mr. President. If they go to Channels, Mr. President. If they go to NTA, Mr. President. Even the one I don’t watch, Arise, it’s Mr. President.

“So, they have no choice, and they must watch it and watch it for 17 days. There is nothing they can do.

“Sir, Abuja people say I should tell you, please, they are happy. Coalition is bound to fail, and it has failed.”

    President woos Wike to APC

President Tinubu invited Wike to join the All Progressives Congress (APC).

He said the ruling party would welcome him into the fold with open arms because of his impressive performance as a member of FEC.

“We have somebody in Nyesom Wike. He’s not a member of my party—not yet. But the day he changes his mind and registers with the progressives, we will welcome him. Because we will enjoy him in singing, ‘as e dey pain them, e dey sweet us,’” President Tinubu said.

Wike, a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain, served as governor of Rivers State between 2015 and 2023. He was appointed as minister by the President in 2023.

President Tinubu has publicly showered praises on the minister for fighting the huge infrastructure deficit in Abuja.

Tinubu woos Wike, says APC will welcome ex-Rivers governor

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday extended an open invitation to Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike to join the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), praising his performance in office and declaring that Wike would be welcomed with open arms.

President Tinubu also recommitted his administration to sustained investment in infrastructure, declaring that no amount of political pressure or opposition will derail his development agenda under the Renewed Hope Agenda.

“We have somebody in Nyesom Wike. He’s not a member of my party — not yet. But the day he changes his mind and registers with the progressives, we will welcome him. Because we will enjoy him in singing, ‘as e dey pain them, e dey sweet us”, Tinubu said during the commissioning of the Arterial Road N16 in Katampe District, Abuja

The lighthearted yet politically charged remark came as the President formally inaugurated the completed stretch of Shehu Shagari Way, linking the Nnamdi Azikiwe Expressway to Wole Soyinka Way through Katampe and adjoining districts.

The project, which includes a major interchange and access roads, is part of the Abuja Master Plan and had stalled for years before being revived under Wike’s leadership.

Tinubu emphasised that his government will continue to prioritize service delivery and national development over political grandstanding.

“We will continue to build, we will continue to serve the people, no matter how much the naysayers pursue their politics,” the President said. “We did not ignore this project. We did not worry about protests. The government has played its part.”

President Tinubu hailed the completion of the project as a milestone that goes beyond physical construction.

“This project represents more than a stretch of asphalt, it affirms our commitment to urban transformation under our Renewed Hope Agenda. What was once missing as a link is now a modern, functional and durable infrastructure”, he said.

He praised Minister Wike’s leadership and collaborative approach in delivering the project.

“Once again, I commend the Honorable Minister of FCT, Barrister Nyesom Wike, and his team. He could not achieve this alone without your collaboration as a team builder, a team player. You have proved that teamship is the hallmark of good leadership,” Tinubu said.

The President reiterated his administration’s broader vision to deploy infrastructure as a tool for national growth, social inclusion, and economic transformation.

“Infrastructure is not a luxury, it is a necessity. It is the bedrock of national competitiveness, growth, social integration and economic opportunity”, he stressed.

Tinubu noted that Nigeria’s future lies in its ability to connect cities, communities, and industries with world-class infrastructure.

“There is no way industrialization will flourish without good roads,” he said, adding that the government is also investing in “roads, rail, power, healthcare, education and digital infrastructure.”

Since assuming office in May 2023, the Tinubu administration has pursued a strategy rooted in reform and regeneration.

According to the President, Wednesday’s commissioning is tangible proof that the strategy is yielding results.

“This corridor was underdeveloped for years, despite its central role in the Abuja master plan. Today, that narrative has changed. This road will ease traffic congestion around Central Abuja and improve connectivity to developing districts. It will stimulate housing and business growth, while serving as a foundation for future city integration”, he said.

President Tinubu also called on residents and stakeholders to take ownership of the new road and preserve it as a community asset.

“The road belongs to the community and citizens of Abuja and us as the federal government. I urge you to protect it and use it wisely,” he said.

The President closed his remarks by thanking the FCT community for their cooperation during the road construction, including those who were relocated to make way for the project.

“Thank you very much for the cooperation. We thank the Minister of FCT too for relocating your community with peace and good compensation,” he noted.

As he formally declared the road commissioned, President Tinubu once again reaffirmed the central mission of his administration: “To the glory of God, I declare this road commissioned for the benefit of humanity. May God bless Abuja Capital Territory, bless Nigeria, and keep our troops safe.”

Meanwhile, speaking earlier, the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, said President Bola Tinubu’s infrastructural development has killed the coalition moves by the opposition.

He vowed to continue to support Tinubu’s administration.

He stated, “Some people, whatever you do, will not be happy; many of them were born not to be happy.”

“Under Tinubu, contractors now have confidence in the government. Your good works have killed the coalition in Nigeria. Mr. President, let me first of all convey the happiness and appreciation of the people of the city. I’m sure that when you came down from the vehicle, you saw how happy people were praising you.

“That’s to tell you they appreciate and recognize the good works you are doing. There are some people, whatever you do, they will never be happy. They were born not to be happy, and so there is nothing you can do about it. But those who appreciate, who are happy, you can see how elated they are.

“Let me let you know that this road was awarded by your administration. It is not one of those projects that were inherited. Having worked with you for a few years, I’ve seen how passionate you are about contracts and abandonment of contracts. This job was awarded by the Federal Executive Council last year September, and we flagged off this project in October.

“I told the contractors, I said, listen, I don’t want to hear complaints. Whatever it will take you to do your job, do it. If I pay you during the rainy season, you must work under the rainy season. If I pay you in the dry season, you must work in the dry season. I don’t want to hear that, oh, the rain was too much. Return the money so that we can keep it. After the rain, we can pay you. You can’t keep our money when we have paid you, then you say it is raining, No. Send our money back.

“I’m quite elated. Initially, I was skeptical about the contractor CGC until you appointed us sometime in August 2023. The road from the Presidential Villa to Asokoro, that interchange, I couldn’t believe that we can have it and it was done by the CGC. Everybody saw how that place was. So I started having that confidence in them.

“I told CGC, are you sure that Mr. President will commission this (N16) road project in his second year in office? They said yes. I said, are you sure? They said yes. Should I include it as part of the project to be commissioned? They said yes. I said, see, don’t look for my problem. Now you have made a promise, you have to keep to the promise.

“Let me tell you one thing you have done Mr. President that has created confidence in contractors today. This road stopped somewhere. As I speak to you now, companies, contractors are competing among themselves for us to just award the job. Most of them have gone and started without even giving them the initial mobilization. That is confidence building. And that’s what we’ve created.

“I want to thank the management of CGC. No one contract that is awarded under the FCT, would be abandoned. By the time you do your third year in office next year, you will see that virtually all the contracts you awarded under you as the president, as the chairman of the Federal Executive Council, will all have finished them to the glory of God and no contractor will be left unpaid. They know in my dictionary, there’s no variation.

“Your Excellency, we cannot thank you enough to have the opportunity to be part of this going on in the country.

If they turn to ADBN, they’re watching Mr. President. If they turn to TVC, it’s Mr. President. If they go to Channels, Mr. President. If they go to NTA, Mr. President. Even the one I don’t watch, Arise, it’s Mr. President. So, they have no choice, and they must watch it and watch it for 17 days. There is nothing they can do. So, sir, Abuja people say I should tell you, please, they are happy. That even though you have given them 10 days, the other ones will be shared by the VP, Senate President, and Speaker.

“Coalition is bound to fail, and it has failed”, he said.

“You are a transformational leader. You have the foresight, the vision and determination to succeed. Thank you very much, the President said.

PDP will not die despite crisis – Wike

Minister of the Federal Capital (FCT) Nyesom Wike has assured stakeholders of the People Democratic Party (PDP) have resolved not to allow the party to die.

Wike said this on Monday when he hosted some PDP stakeholders in his official resident in Abuja.

Those at the meeting include former Governors Ifeanyi Uguanyi (Enugu); Samuel Ortom (Benue) and Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia).

Others at the meeting include the National Secretary of the PDP, Senator Samuel Anyanwu; former Senate Minority Leader, Philip Aduda; serving and former federal and state lawmakers, some zonal and state party executives, among a host of others.

Addressing the gathering, Wike said the concerned stakeholders are those who have always believed in the survival of the party.

“All of you here are those who are committed to the survival of our party not just on TV talking or on the newspapers talking but committed to the party at the various levels.

“Today, this country is stabilised because of the activities of the G5 Governors. You may like us you may hate us. The truth of the matter is if G5 did not take the decision we took, this country would have been in crisis. It doesn’t matter who the beneficiary was but the right thing had to be done and we still stand by that decision.

“If the party had listened to what we said, we won’t have been where we are today and we have continued to sound it to the party, let the constitution of the party and of the country be respected. That, as an opposition party, we cannot continue to act with impunity. No opposition party acts with impunity. Ours is to continue to placate people and bring them together, not to say that they should go to hell.

“Let us not allow greed, let us not allow ego to kill out party”.

The FCT Minister who wondered the fixation on the position of national secretary, said Taraba Governor Agbu Kefas was the chairman of the party in the State and did not resign before contesting for governorship but only went back to resign after winning the election.

Wike said the Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Ibrahim Abdullahi, also contested for the Kebbi governorship and retained his seat even after losing the election.

On his part, Ortom noted that he who pays the piper dictates the tune.

He challenged anyone to tell Nigerians whoever has contributed to the growth of the PDP more than Wike.

Ortom said the President understands that the country cannot be a one-party state which was why he appointed Wike into a very sensitive position as the FCT Minister.

According to him: “For whatever reason, PDP made a lot of mistakes and we are where we are today”.

The meeting was still ongoing behind closed doors as of the time of filing this report. It is expected to come out with a communique.

The PDP is facing crisis with some Governors and federal lawmakers elected on its platform defecting to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

ICC commences operations soon – Wike

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, on Monday said operational use of the newly renovated Abuja International Conference Centre (ICC) will commence after the commissioning scheduled for the 10th of June, 2025.

The Minister stated this after inspecting the renovated ICC, the Outer Southern Expressway going to Wassa, and the Gishiri road construction project.

The Minister had shut down the Conference Centre in April 2024 for an initial period of eight months, cancelling all previously booked events and activities, while citing poor maintenance by the previous managers, Messrs Integrated Facility Management Services Limited.

Wike then re-awarded the comprehensive renovation of the facility to Julius Berger, announcing that the ICC will be handed back to the Abuja Investment Company Limited following its renovation.

However, the Minister stated that the FCT administration will enter an agreement with Julius Berger for the maintenance of the facility, describing maintenance of government facilities as: “a significant challenge in this country.”

He noted that the new technological installations were not too complicated to be operated by the local staff who worked in the facility, adding that the administration will ensure that things are properly done.

“The centre will be maintained by Julius Berger, the company that built it. We’re not going to hand it over to any politician to manage. Maintenance is a significant challenge in this country, and we’re committed to doing things differently.

“The agreement with Julius Beggar will ensure that maintenance is done properly. We’re working on the details, and once the agreement is signed, we’ll make sure that anyone who uses the centre pays for maintenance.

“Don’t worry about the new technology; the company that provided it will handle maintenance. The staff working there are Nigerians who have been supervised by us. The technology isn’t complicated, and we’ll start operations soon after commissioning,” he said.

Wike also stated that leadership was crucial to the completion of various projects in the FCT, despite bureaucratic hurdles, stating; “Bureaucracy can be a challenge, but when you communicate your vision clearly and set expectations, people understand what needs to be done. Leadership is essential. Without it, you can’t achieve anything.”

“I work closely with civil servants who understand the vision and are committed to achieving it. If someone is not performing well, I take decisive action. It’s not about dictating, but about communicating and setting clear expectations,” he added.

THE NATION reports that the FCT administration has scheduled 17 days for the inauguration of projects across the nation’s capital, with the Conference Center scheduled to be inaugurated on Tuesday.

Wike urged Abuja residents to continue to support the Tinubu’s administration for more dividends of democracy.
