APC chieftain lauds Fubara, Wike’s truce

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Dennis Osahon Aikoriogie, has lauded the truce between the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Chief Nyesom Wike and suspended Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara.

Dr. Aikoriogbe said the peaceful resolution was an indication that Nigeria’s democracy has matured.

Akiriogbe, in a statement issued in Benin City, commended Wike for his bold and statesmanlike role in reconciling Fubara.

He said the truce was a “win-win for both parties and a victory for the people of Rivers State.

Aikoriogie noted that the peaceful resolution of the long-running dispute between the executive and legislative arms of government in Rivers State marked a significant step toward democratic consolidation.

He also hailed the Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Hon. Martins Chike Amaewhule, for cooperating in the peaceful accord.

According to him, “The unity of the legislative and executive arms will not only foster peace but ensure that governance returns to the front burner in Rivers State.

“President Bola Ahmed Tinubu timely intervention and statesmanlike leadership in brokering the peace deal is a clear indication that Nigeria’s democracy is maturing under a president who values unity, dialogue, and institutional respect.

“Nigeria needs more leaders who understand that power is a tool for service, not personal vendetta.

“The unity of the legislative and executive arms will not only foster peace but ensure that governance returns to the state.”

JUST IN: Wike, Fubara, Amaewhule make public appearance after fresh peace talks

Suspended Rivers Governor Siminalayi Fubara, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Nyesom Wike and suspended Rivers Speaker Martin Amaewhule were seen together in public on Saturday, days after a high-profile peace meeting aimed at resolving the political turmoil in the state.

Their joint appearance took place at the burial ceremony of Wike’s uncle in Rumuepirikom, Rivers State.

The event came shortly after Thursday’s peace talks in Abuja brokered by President Bola Tinubu to address the prolonged political crisis between Fubara and his former allies.

Wike’s media aide, Lere Olayinka, shared a video of the gathering on X with the caption.

The funeral was attended by several notable political figures, including Senator Allwell Onyesoh, Senator George Thompson Sekibo, and Senator Olaka Nwogu.

Others in attendance were former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Rt. Hon. Chibudom Nwuche, former House of Representatives member Hon. Ken Chikere, South-South Vice Chairman of the APC Victor Giadom, and former PDP Deputy National Chairman Dr. Sam Sam Jaja.

  • Rivers: How Wike, Fubara meeting set stage for peace deal

    • Gov returns to FCT minister’s political family, makes concessions

The meetings came in quick succession. And in utter secrecy apparently to shield the gladiators from undue public pressure.

By the time it was all over early yesterday, they were all smiles, pumping hands. The stage seemed set for a return to normalcy in Rivers State politics.

Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike, suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara, suspended members of the state House of Assembly and key stakeholders in the state resolved to end all hostilities and work together as before.

The deal was sealed at a separate meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the State House, Abuja.

Previous efforts at reconciliation had not fared well.

But Wike and Fubara told newsmen as they emerged from the meeting with Tinubu that it was for real this time.

Wike, backed by 27 of the state legislators, had been locked in a bitter feud with the governor.

Their disagreement soon degenerated into threats to public peace, culminating in the imposition of a six-month state of emergency in the state by the President on March 15.

“We have all agreed to work together with the governor, and the governor also agreed to work together with all of us.

“We are members of the same political family,” Wike said.

Both sides, according to him, have buried the hatchet and committed to working together going forward.

He acknowledged that while disagreements are a natural part of human relations, reconciliation is also part of the process, and that has now been accomplished.

“Yes, just like humans, you have a disagreement and then you also have a time to settle your disagreement.

“That has been finally concluded today.

“We have come to report to Mr. President that this is what we have agreed.

“So, for me, everything is over,” the FCT Minister said.

He asked political actors in Rivers to align with the renewed spirit of unity and cooperation.

He said: “I enjoin everybody who believes to work with us, to also work together with everybody.

“There’s no more acrimony. There’s nothing to say.”

The governor spoke along the same line.

His words: “For me, it’s a day we have to thank Almighty God.

“What we need for the progress of Rivers State is peace, and by the special grace of God, this night, with the help of Mr President and the agreement of the leaders of the state, our leader, peace has returned in Rivers State.

“We’ll do everything within our power to make sure that we sustain it this time around.”

He described the resolution as a divine intervention.

He promised to do everything within his power to sustain the peace achieved.

Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, in a statement on his verified X handle @aonanuga1956 yesterday, said President Tinubu convened a high-level peace meeting at the State House in Abuja, bringing together key actors in the conflict for a rare face-to-face dialogue.

Onanuga said the meeting was called to end the political hostilities that have gripped Rivers State for months and to “restore normalcy and order.”

Details of the agreements reached at the State House meeting were not disclosed.

However, sources said the terms of the agreement reached by the parties include limitation of the governor to one term only, withdrawal of all threats of impeachment by the assembly against the governor and discontinuation of all court cases by everyone.

It was gathered that Fubara, with the assistance of Wike, first met with the suspended state legislators led by Speaker Martins Amaewhule in Abuja.

At the meeting, Fubara reportedly apologised profusely to the suspended speaker and other lawmakers and appealed to them to forgive him.

He said the errors committed in the past would not arise again.

He then proceeded to shake hands with all of them.

An enlarged meeting attended by elders, such as OCJ Okocha, Chief Ferdinand Alabrara, King Sergeant Awuse and members of the National Assembly caucus of Rivers, followed.

During the meeting, Wike was said to have asked political leaders from his side to stop public criticism of Fubara.

“Chief Wike said henceforth, nobody should grant interviews to criticise Fubara and that everybody should give the new-found peace a chance. He told them that the peace agreement was designed to favour everybody,” a source told The Nation.

From the second meeting, Wike, Fubara and some principal officers of the House of Assembly moved to the State House to brief the President on their agreement and resolve to work together.

Sources said Fubara agreed not to seek a second term in office.

He pledged to pay all the withheld salaries and allowances of the lawmakers.

He was also said to have agreed to allow his political father, Wike, to nominate all the 23 local government chairmen in the forthcoming councils’ poll.

He said President Tinubu did not impose any decision on them but merely accepted the agreements and faulted claims that it was the President that drafted the agreement.

Senator George Sekibo, Kingsley Chinda, Senator Magnus Abe and Chief Victor Giadom were among those who witnessed the meeting.

This is how to lead, PDP chief hails Tinubu

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from Ogun State, Segun Showunmi, was all praise for the President for helping to resolve the Rivers State crisis.

Showunmi, spokesman for Alhaji Atiku Abubakar during the 2023 presidential election, said on his verified X handle @SegunShowunmi: “This is how to lead! A leader must resolve issues, not make them worse.

“There is nothing wrong with studying Asiwaju @officialABAT. After all, we study leaders in other climes. It is a weakness and colonial mentality to think that one of our own cannot be learned.

“Mr. President, you do this one. Thank you Gov @SimFubaraKSC thank you, Min @GovWike, thank you Speaker and his colleagues. Thank you reasonable elders who encouraged this.

“This has always been my position. The journey from home is the same distance as the journey away from home. Team Rivers is Back. Now let’s celebrate. Never again!!!!”

A Rivers State activist, Oby Ndukwe, said: “The biggest story this week is the return of Siminalayi Fubara to his political family and the return of peace to Rivers State.

“This is a time for healing, not a time to cast aspersions on Fubara or Wike.

“Meanwhile, those on the side of the governor, who may not be comfortable with this renewed alignment, can align with the opposition coalition group. It’s all politics and power play.”

Fubara had visited President Tinubu in Lagos during the last Eid el Kabir holidays.

He had also visited Wike in Abuja.

CSOs urge Wike, lawmakers to intervene in FCT workers’ strike

As the strike by health and education workers across the six Area Councils of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) enters its fourth month, civil society organisations have raised alarm over the escalating human cost and long-term damage to society.

In an open appeal addressed to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, Area Council Chairmen, National Assembly members representing the FCT, and relevant secretariat heads, a coalition of over 40 pressure groups and well-meaning individuals urged immediate dialogue with striking workers to resolve their grievances and prevent future disruptions.

“True leadership is not in shifting blame but in rising to the occasion to protect those most affected by this crisis, our children, our sick, and our poor,” the statement read.

Under the aegis of the FCT Civil Society Organisations Accountability Mechanism Network (FCT-CAM), the civil society actors demanded that the Minister of the FCT exercise his authority to facilitate a swift and lasting resolution.

The six Area Council Chairmen were also urged to act in good faith and prioritise the welfare of citizens above political calculations.

Furthermore, legislators were called upon to leverage their oversight functions and representative powers to push for urgent resolution and policy safeguards.

“This is no longer just an administrative issue; it is a test of our collective conscience. The time for excuses is over. The time for decisive leadership is now,” they said.

The coalition warned that each passing day of inaction endangers lives, jeopardises the futures of children, and constitutes a dangerous failure of governance.

They called on political and administrative leaders to act with urgency and moral responsibility, describing the continued paralysis of essential services as “an unacceptable mortgage on the future of the FCT.”

According to FCT-CAM, which coordinated the appeal, the prolonged strike has left thousands of children locked out of classrooms, with no access to public education.

It noted that as public frustration deepens and the most vulnerable continue to bear the brunt of the deadlock, all eyes are now on the FCT leadership to show that governance can still mean responsibility, responsiveness, and care.

“Our children are roaming the streets. Their learning has been halted. The educational divide between the rich and the poor is widening by the day,” the group said, warning that the consequences of educational disruption at this scale could reverberate for generations.

The impact on healthcare is equally dire, they noted, adding that primary healthcare centres have remained closed, cutting off access to essential medical services for the most vulnerable, the children, pregnant women, the elderly, and people with chronic illnesses.

“Preventable conditions are going untreated. Community health is deteriorating. Lives are being lost needlessly,” the coalition stressed, adding that denying people healthcare and education is not only unjust but in direct contradiction to Nigeria’s development and equity goals.

The appeal was signed by a network of development, health, education, gender, and youth-focused organizations, including the Civil Society Action Coalition on Education for All (CSACEFA), Vaccine Network for Disease Control (VNDC), Basic Rights Watch, Centre for Accountability and Inclusive Development, and Health Education Agriculture Development Africa Initiative (HEARD Africa).

Others include the Good Governance Team (GGT Nigeria), Regima Community Care Foundation, Nigerian Women Agro Allied Farmers Association (NIWAAFA), Michael Adedotun Oke Foundation, Cedar Seed Foundation, and the Centre for the Right to Health (CRH).

In addition, notable advocates and community leaders also endorsed the appeal, including Aanu’ Rotimi, Princess Hamman-Obels, and Arch. Lola Ibrahim, Lois Auta, Oba Imole, Chika Offor, and Amb. Ojineme Enakeme, among others.

The coalition, however, reaffirmed its readiness to support all sincere efforts toward resolving the strike and restoring services.

“We urge you to act now, reopen our schools, reopen our healthcare centres, and restore hope in a functional, compassionate society,” the coalition maintained.

Tinubu Conference Centre booked till 2027 – Wike

Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, has revealed that the Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre in Abuja is fully booked until 2027, despite initial criticisms surrounding the project.

Speaking on Thursday during the official commissioning of the Kugbo Bus Terminal, an event graced by President Bola Tinubu’s representative, Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Wike said the high demand for the facility underscores its value and relevance.

The Minister noted that the FCT Administration is currently working to adjust the centre’s tight schedule to accommodate a request from the House of Representatives Committee on Constitution Review, which also wants to use the venue.

Wike defended the Tinubu administration, stating that the level of interest in the conference centre is a clear indication of the government’s foresight and the project’s usefulness to the nation.

Wike didn’t allocate Abuja land to son – Aide debunks claim

Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has dismissed as false an online report claiming the minister allocated 2,082 hectares of land to his son in Maitama and Asokoro.

In a statement on Thursday, Olayinka described the report as “another falsehood from those whose job is to malign the FCT minister,” insisting that “not even a single plot of land has been allocated to any of the Minister’s children.”

He questioned the credibility of the claim, asking, “In Asokoro and Maitama of today, where can the FCT minister see 2,082 hectares of land to allocate to anyone?”

Olayinka challenged the publisher of the report to provide evidence of any land allocation bearing the name of Wike’s children.

The statement read, “My attention has been drawn to yet, another malicious falsehood coming from the same elements whose job is to defame and malign the FCT minister, Nyesom Wike.

“Even though it is the right of the Minister and members of his family, both immediate and extended to own lands anywhere in Nigeria, including the FCT, provided all necessary conditions are met, no land has been allocated to any of his children.

“In the publication, a Right of Occupancy R-of-O issued to JOAQ Farms and Estate Limited, for Agricultural purposes was the only evidence used to justify the claim.

“For the avoidance of doubt, JOAQ Farms and Estate Limited, a company duly registered in Nigeria, got land allocation in the Bwari Area Council for the purpose of farming.

“So what is wrong with a farmer getting land allocation strictly for agriculture?

“Therefore, the publication, claiming that the FCT minister allocated 2,082 hectares of land to his son, is false and should be disregarded”, Olayinka added.

Wike approves urgent renovation of IBB Golf Club Abuja

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike on Saturday approved the renovation of IBB International Golf and Country Club, Abuja.

The renovation, Wike said, will commence with the club house.

The Minister gave the approval during an official visit to the club’s Board of Trustees headed by the President Appeal Court, Justice Monica Dongban-Mensem.

The development is due to a request by Justice Dongban-Mensem that the club had become worn out due to excessive use and little maintenance since it was opened to play in 1991.

Wike disclosed that Julius Berger would handle the renovation of the club house as the construction firm was the same company that built the golf course years back.

The Minister cautioned members of the club using covet means to take over the golf club to steer clear, insisting it remained the property of government.

Wike said: “You know I’m not a golfer. This is my first time of coming here and I have had some interest. My interest is, this is the property of government and I’m very proud for you to manage. When I came here, I was quite impressed. Like you said, there are so many countries made by the tourism.

“And if you have people like today, they having Ecowas meeting taking place. Now, there may be golfers, they want to come and play golf. It’s very key. And that’s why we will not allow anybody to take what belongs to us. We will not allow that. Government is not a good manager”.

The Minister said the restoration of the golf course was what anybody who had good taste and meant well for the country would encourage, adding that it is better to renovate the place, open it up and not allow it degenerate.

“So that when people come in, they have where they can laugh at the club and have their drinks and the rest of the thing. I would take it as part of the emergency that we must do,” he said.

Dongban-Mensem had appealed for the upgrading of the golf course in the same way government had renovated the International Conference Centre.

She said: “We are confident that with the massive infrastructural development under the Renewed Hope Agenda of the President, His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and under your dynamic leadership of the FCT, our dear IBB International Club will similarly be a beneficiary of your foresightedness and determination to turn our nation around”.

The Minister was presented with a special golf memorabilia by a member of the BOT, Otunba Olusegun Runsewe, who described Wike as the most misunderstood Nigerian and a man who likes to deliver.

Runsewe also promised to deliver a special golf club to Wike this week so that the minister can start playing at home.

He also applauded the minister for the commitment to renovate the club and also promised the full support of members of the IBB Golf Club.

Wike’s support credited for FCT Mandate Secretary’s triple award win

The enabling policy environment fostered by the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has been credited for the outstanding performance of Dr. Adedolapo Fasawe, Mandate Secretary for Health Services and Environment, who recently received three prestigious awards within a month.

Dr. Fasawe was recognised for her significant contributions to healthcare delivery, environmental management, and climate action in the FCT.

Speaking during one of the award ceremonies, she attributed her achievements to the operational freedom and institutional backing provided under the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu, noting that the support has empowered her office to implement impactful initiatives across sectors.

“The enabling environment created by the FCT Minister has allowed Mandate Secretaries like myself to innovate, implement, and deliver real change,” she said.

She was later honoured as a “Silent Hero in Healthcare Delivery” at the 7th Nigeria Silent Heroes Awards (NSHA) in Abuja, for her low-profile but high-impact role in improving health systems and access to care across the FCT.

The final award came from Obafemi Awolowo University (formerly University of Ife), her alma mater, where she was presented with an Award of Excellence in Climate Action during the 2025 International Conference of the Faculty of Social Sciences.

The award reflected her work in mainstreaming climate resilience into public health planning.

Collectively, the awards highlight Dr. Fasawe’s ability to align policy with practice, driving reforms at the intersection of health, environment, and climate governance.

Flooding: Edo to under study Wike, Akpabio model

Edo State government has inaugurated a team of experts to visit Rivers and Akwa Ibom states to study flood control strategies adopted by both states to tackle flooding.

Recent rainfall caused heavy flooding in most parts of Benin City, the state capital.

The team was tasked with revisiting strategies adopted during the administrations of Nyesom Wike and Godswill Akpabio.

Chief Press Secretary to Governor Okpebholo, in a statement, said the approach premised on learning from working models, and replicating tested solutions that delivered real results for the people.

Itua noted that the two tates’ models were acknowledged for transforming some of Nigeria’s most flood-prone areas into States with efficient flood management systems.

He said the models stood as credible blueprints for what is possible in Edo State.

According to him, “With the rainy season already tilting towards its peak, the timing of the exercise is strategic. It provides the experts with a unique opportunity to observe and assess the true extent of flooding in real time across Benin City and other vulnerable parts of the State.

“The focus will be on understanding the terrain, existing drainage infrastructure, and recurring flashpoints of overflow and erosion.

“Their findings and recommendations will be submitted to the Governor for thorough evaluation and subsequent implementation.

“Similarly, private and commercial houses built along waterways will be demolished by the administration to pave the way for proper surface and underground drainages, especially in Government Reservation Areas in Benin City.

  • PDP’s move to sideline Wike’s loyalists backfires, casts doubt on NEC meeting

PDP’s move to sideline Wike’s loyalists backfires, casts doubt on NEC meeting

An attempt by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leadership to sideline allies of Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike ahead of the party’s crucial National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting on June 30 has backfired, throwing the planned gathering into uncertainty.

The NEC meeting, which is expected to lay the foundation for the PDP’s national convention scheduled for August 28–30 in Kano, was also meant to finalise zoning arrangements for national leadership positions and ratify the outcomes of recent zonal congresses, many of which allegedly excluded Wike and his ally, PDP national secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu.

However, the party’s move suffered a major setback when the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) invalidated a May 10, 2025, notification letter sent to it due to the absence of Anyanwu’s signature.

While some party factions had celebrated the omission as a sign of sidelining the Wike/Anyanwu camp, INEC’s response, signed by its Acting Secretary, Haliru Aminu, dealt a blow to their efforts.

In the letter titled “RE: Notice of 100th National Executive Committee (NEC) Meeting of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)”, the commission cited non-compliance with relevant electoral guidelines, rendering the PDP’s request letter void.

“Your Letter on the above subject refers.

“The Commission draws your attention that the notice is not in compliance with the requirement of part 2(12)3 of the Regulations and Guidelines for Political Parties, 2022 that provides ‘the National Chairman and National Secretary of the Party shali jointly sign the notice of convention, congress, conference or meeting and submit same to the Commission.’ Be guided,” INEC asserted.

“In addition, checks by The Nation indicate that the non-inclusion of Anyanwu’s signature in PDP’s letter to INEC may have directly contravened sections of the party’s constitution.

    “Specifically, Provision 36 (1) a–b of PDP’s constitution explicitly states that: “There shall be a National Secretary who shall be the Administrative and Accounting Officer of the Accounting functions shall be to (a) supervise the day-to-day activities of the Party;

“(b) Conduct or direct the conduct of the correspondences of the party and cause to be issued notices of meetings of the Convention, the National Executive Committee, the National Caucus and the National Working Committee.”

“Earlier, in order to beat the 21 days’ notice required by INEC and also sidetrack involvement by Senator Anyanwu, PDP’s acting National Chairman, Ambassador Damagum, with the backing of some PDP Governors-  had taking the unprecedented step of unilaterally writing a letter to notify INEC of plans for a June 30 NEC meeting.

“We write to formality inform and invite the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) that the Leadership of our Great Party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has scheduled our 100° National Executive Committee (NEC) Meeting to hold on Monday, June 20, 2025 at the National Secretariat of our party, Wadata Plaza, Wuse Zone 5, Abuja.

“This is for the Commission’s information and necessary action, please,” Damagum had stated in his unilateral letter to INEC.

“Under the Electoral Act, INEC’s presence conference validates far-reaching conclusions that may be reached by either a political party’s National convention or the NEC, which is the highest decision-making party organ.

“It would be recalled that it took a quick intervention and urgent plea by the Bukola Saraki-led PDP Reconciliation Committee to get Anyanwu to sign another letter to enable PDP submit nomination papers for its candidate in the forthcoming Anambra state governorship election.

Earlier, a similar attempt had been made to sidetrack Anyanwu, with Damagum signing a formal letter to INEC that required the signatures of both the party’s National Chairman and the National Secretary.
