Wike knocks contractor over delays on road project

    …vows to ensure accountability

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, on Friday, September 27, warned contractors responsible for the delayed construction of the left-hand service carriageway of OSEX from Ring Road 1 (RRI) to Wasa Junction (15KM), expressing deep dissatisfaction over the slow pace of work.

Speaking during a site inspection in Abuja, Wike blasted the contractor, China Geo-Engineering Corporation (CGC), for their failure to meet project milestones, saying that they have received over 80% of the contract payment

“Very bad, I am not encouraged,” Wike stated, visibly frustrated.

He said: “Yesterday, my attention was drawn when I went to inspect the Apo-Karshi road, which took us through Wassa. I passed through this area and tried to find out where CGC is working one of the respected companies, as far as I am concerned. But regarding this road, I am not happy.”

Wike noted that despite promises of progress, the contractor had barely completed 50% of the work.

The Minister said: “We have paid over 80 percent of this contract, and as far as I am concerned, they have not done the work.”

In response to the delays, Wike summoned the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) and CGC for an emergency meeting, ordering the contractor to commit to completing the project by May 2025.

“Let them go and commit themselves and tell us by May they are going to finish this project. That’s the only way I am going to accept it,” Wike emphasised.

The Apo-Karshi road project is a critical infrastructural development meant to ease traffic congestion in Abuja and stimulate economic activities in the area.

Wike stressed the importance of timely completion, noting that the road, once finished, would have a significant impact on reducing traffic bottlenecks and enhancing business operations.

He also sent a clear message to underperforming contractors, stating that non-performers would face severe consequences.

Wike said: “We don’t have any relationship with non-performing contractors. If you don’t perform, we kick you out. There is no sentiment about whether you are an indigenous contractor or foreign contractor, we don’t care.”

The FCT Minister underscored that contractors who fail to deliver on their promises would not only be terminated but also be required to pay back any funds received.

Wike said: “You can’t just collect our money and think we will let you go. No. When we kick you out, we make you pay for it.”

As Wike continues his push for accountability and transparency in the administration of the FCT’s projects, Abuja residents and commuters hope that his firm stance will bring about the timely completion of crucial infrastructure developments, starting with the Apo-Karshi road.

  • Strike: I may use IGR to pay primary school teachers – Wike

Strike: I may use IGR to pay primary school teachers – Wike

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, on Thursday, September 26, threatened to use ten percent of Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) meant for the Area Councils to pay striking primary school teachers in the nation’s capital.

The minister disclosed this while inspecting the ongoing Apo-Karshi Road project.

Wike, who expressed displeasure over the development said he would not allow pupils to be affected by the strike which has gone on for over a week.

He said no serious government would fold its hands and allow teachers to suffer.

NUT had last week directed all primary school teachers across the six area councils to shut down all the primary schools after the 14-day-ultimatum issued to the six area council chairmen elapsed strike on Wednesday, 18th September 2024, without a response from them to their demands.

The striking teachers are demanding the remaining 60 percent of 25 months of minimum wage arrears owed them as well as other benefits.

The minister added that he had invited the Chairmen of the Area Council and the FCT NUT leadership to discuss the issue.

“I’ve invited the Area Council Chairmen and then I’ve invited the NUT, and let’s sit down. These are the things we talk about. We try to do what we can to see that the system is moving well. It is unfortunate, which I told the Area Council Chairmen, that the teachers are on strike”.

“And that will mean that if the teachers are not paid, then I will use the 10% IGR, which nobody paid to them, to pay the teachers. I will not fold my arms and allow that to happen. No serious government will allow their teachers to stay at home while the children are suffering, I will not tolerate that”, he said.

Speaking on the Apo-Karshi project, the Minister said the contractor, Messrs Khakatar Limited, had given assurances of completing the project in April 2025, noting that he had opted to give the contractor the benefit of the doubt.

He said: “The last time we came, we believed that each of the contractors had moved back into sight. Obviously, we thought that within 7 months, they ought to have completed, but unfortunately, the contractors were not able to move to the site because of some procurement processes. But thank God we have passed that stage and they have also been mobilized to move to the site.

“I still have my doubts, but they are still insisting that by April, they will have completed this project. It’s a project very dear to us, we know the importance of this road. So many people are eager to see that this project is completed on time so that it will ease off a lot of traffic and also will boost the economic activities of this area. Let us give them the benefit of the doubt”, he stated.

“Parents have expressed concern over the closure of primary schools across the six area councils of the FCT, following the ongoing strike action by the Local Education Authority (LEA) teachers”.

Wike directs demolition of structures obstructing kugbo international market

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike has directed the Department of Development Control of the (FCTA) to embark on the demolition of structures obstructing road ways in the Kugbo International Market in Kugbo.

Wike gave the directive during an inspection tour of the Kugbo International Market under construction as well as the structure proposed to house the new Ministery of Livestock Development in the Central Business District.

The Minister, who said that the Market was a Public Private Partnership (PPP) between the Abuja Investment Company (AICL), an agency of the FCT Administration and a private business organisation – Mesotho Group Limited also said a market of such magnitude was an investment worth encouraging.

He said: “This is an investment that should be encouraged. An international market of this standard. Though there are a lot of problems, there is encroachment, but I have directed the Department of Development Control to immediately demolish any structure that will cause an impediment. As you can see, this is a road corridor, and we will not allow that.

“The Development Control Director is here and has been ordered to immediately move in with his men to demolish whatever is an obstacle”.

He also urged Messrs Mesotho Group to invest more funds to ensure the completion of the project.

He said: “The investor should as a matter of fact put in more funds to see to the realisation of the entire market. I have asked him when he thinks the whole thing will be ready and he said we should give him till January.

“However, the first phase has been completed. So, we will therefore see what we can do to open the first phase. And some of these our traders on the road have to come in here and give us the free traffic that we deserve”.

Speaking on the possibility of acquiring shops for the less privileged traders and entreprenuers under the Renewed Hope Agenda, the Minister said: “We will do everything we can to support people. Those who have not indicated interest, we will see how, through the empowerment programme of the Renewed Hope Agenda in the FCT, we can see if we can put in some funds by taking some stores and giving to our people in order for them to be involved in one trade or the other.

“So, we will do everything to see that people move into the phase one of this market as quickly as possible. We are happy with what we have seen”.

The Minister who said that the Kugbo International Market will create a lot of employment opportunities for residents and improve the economy of the Territory, added that the market will also assist in the road decongestion efforts of the FCTA by ensuring that traders leave the roadsides and conduct their businesses in the market.

Wike stressed that the cost of the shops should not be the reason for traders to sell on the roads and added that the FCTA through the AICL will work with the investors to ensure fair pricing of shops in the market.

He said: “You don’t expect an investor to open up and you move in for free. Nobody does that and it should not be encouraged. And that is not why I will allow people to trade on the road. The issue before was that there is no market. Now market has been provided and you are saying it’s the cost. Anyway, we will also not allow the investor to take advantage of that and people cannot afford it. No.

“The Abuja Investment Company will sit down with the investor and see what agreement can be reached. Even if it means putting our own stake to see that people get allocation here”.

Also answering questions on the building proposed for the use of the Ministry of Livestock Development, the Minister said it was a directive from the President, to the FCTA for the refurbishment of the 9 storey building.

Wike, who said the refurbishment of the building was considered an emergency, added that with the directive from Mr President, work will commence immediately, and the new Ministry will take ownership upon completion.

Court stops PDP Govs, NWC, BoT, others from dissolving pro-Wike Exco in Rivers

A Federal High Court in Abuja has issued an order restraining Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors, the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) and Board of Trustees (BoT) from tampering with or dissolving the Executive Committees of the party at all levels in Rivers State.

The court also stopped them from constituting any interim committee to replace the officers of the party at the state, local governments and ward levels.

Members of the Excos at the three levels are believed to be loyal to the  Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike.

Justice Peter Lifu handed down the orders in a ruling on an ex-parte motion file by Rivers State PDP Executive Committee, led by Aaron Chukwuemeka and his counterparts at the local government and ward levels.

Justice Lifu further ordered the PDP and others not to tamper with or dissolve the local governments and ward leadership of the PDP in Rivers State, elected along with the State Executive Committee this year at various congresses of the party.

In a copy of the  enrolled order seen on Wednesday, the judge ordered that on no account should the tenure of the Rivers PDP EXCOS at the state, local government and the ward levels  be truncated by the defendants.

He directed that the defendants must not, in anyway, allow or permit any other group or persons to perfume the duties and functions of the PDP State, local governments and Ward officers elected between July 37 and  August 31, 2024.

Listed as plaintiffs in the suit, marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/1396/2024, are Aaron Chukwuemeka, Oye Fubara Igenewari and ThankGod Bekee, who sued on behalf of themselves and the state, local governments and ward executive committees.

The plaintiffs, represented by Joshua Musa (SAN), claimed that the defendants were making clandestine moves to dissolve the legally constituted state, local government and ward executives committees of PDP in Rivers State.

They alleged that the defendants including the PDP governors were also attempting to put in place interim committees to replace them to perform the duties and functions of the state, local governments and wards executives committees of the PDP in Rivers State.

The plaintiffs stated that unless the defendants are restrained from carrying out unlawful act, they would be made to suffer injustice and losses.

…as minister holds send-forth reception for AIG Igweh, ADG Mu’azu

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, at the weekend, urged Abuja residents to applaud the Police, Department of State Security Services (DSS), military, and other security agencies for battling kidnappers and bandits in the nation’s capital.

Wike said from intelligence reports and what he has observed since he assumed office as minister a year ago, the security agencies are performing.

The Minister commended the immediate past FCT Commissioner of Police, Benneth Igweh, and the former Director of Department of State Security Services (DSS), FCT Command, Assistant Director General (ADG) Ado Mu’azu for their meritorious services to the FCT in the course of their assignments.

Wike, who made the commendation during a reception organized in honour of the duo at his official residence in Life Camp, Abuja, said their promotion is in recognition of their hard work and commitment to service to the nation.

The FCT Minister while acknowledging the contributions of Igweh to the protection of lives and property in the FCT said the reception was organized to recognize their efforts during their lifetime.

Wike stressed the importance of giving recognition to those deserving of such during their lifetime and thanked God for sparing their lives in the discharge of their duties in the FCT and subsequent elevation to higher ranks.

He said: “I’ve always said that people who are committed, people who make sacrifices. I don’t believe it’s only when you die that people will honour and reward you.

“While you are alive and you have worked, you should be remembered and that is why we said these two gentlemen who have worked with us, to make all of us sleep well with our two eyes closed, it’s important we honour them, we thank them for their services.

“All of us can attest to the fact that AIG Igweh is a committed police officer who is determined to fight criminality and criminals. We thank God Almighty that God saved his life”.

Speaking on ADG Mu’azu, the Minister said: “The Assistant Director General Mu’azu, very quiet but very committed. I thank the new DG of the State Security Services for seeing him worthy to be promoted for him to work at the national level”.

The Minister also thanked the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun for appointing Bennett Igweh whom he described as a rugged officer that knows the terrain of the FCT as the AIG in charge of Zone 7 which comprises the FCT, Kaduna, and Niger States.

Wike who confessed that he was initially worried over the possibility of losing the services of Igweh, following his elevation, expressed relief when he was assured that the former CP would still be within the FCT jurisdiction.

He said: “I know the role you play, sleepless nights sometimes. You work relentlessly to keep FCT safe. I know as the Minister, the security reports I get every day, if the people of the FCT know what you have put in place, the efforts you make to combat crime, all the things you have been doing; Every day, I get the security reports, I get the criminals, look at the kind of guns they carry. You arrest them but you don’t go on television except when it is necessary to announce it. So, Nigerians should know that you are doing a lot. So, I thank you. On behalf of the FCT, we must say thank you.

“Also, I would like to say to Muazu, thank the DG for identifying your qualities and also bringing you to the National Headquarters so that you can be of immense help to him and the FCT”.

He urged the security officials to continue to serve their fatherland with the same spirit and commitment and also support the government to protect the lives of the citizens.

The FCT Minister also thanked other security agencies for their cooperative and collaborative efforts in ensuring the security of the FCT.

The immediate past FCT Commissioner of Police, Benneth Igweh, thanked the FCT Minister for his support during his tenure as the FCT Commissioner of Police and for the recognition.

Igweh used the opportunity to warn criminal elements in the FCT of his continued presence as the AIG Zone 7 in charge of the FCT which he said has given him more powers to bring the fight to them.

He said: “I want to inform Abuja residents; that I am still around. I am not moving anywhere. I’m around and now that I have more powers, I don’t know where you will run to. If you know where you will pack and go, you better start now because I am now an AIG, so, I have more power now to supervise what is happening in Abuja”.

Igweh also assured FCT residents of their safety and called for the continued support of the FCT Minister to the security agencies.

Wike raises the alarm over high cost of construction in FCT

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Nyesom Wike on Saturday expressed displeasure over what he described as high cost of construction in Abuja.

Wike said this when he visited the Zeberced Limited Quarry, the biggest Quarry in West Africa, located in the Kubwa District of Abuja.

The FCT Minister stated that the visit was at the invitation of the Managing director of Zeberced Group, Ayden Adil Kurt to see the activities at the Quarry.

Wike, who was impressed with the humongous scale of industrial activities at the quarry, including the production of gravel, stone dust and asphalt amongst others commended the company for its efforts and commitment to the project.

The Minister  who also  said he was encouraged by the activities at the quarry wondered why contractors still quoted exorbitant costs for construction projects in the FCT seeing as the essential raw materials were readily available at the quarry.

He said: “The Managing Director has always invited me to come to see what they are doing at the factory which is the biggest quarry in West Africa. I’ve taken the opportunity to look at the environment and see what they are doing.

“That shows that ordinarily, the cost of construction ought not to be very expensive, particularly in the FCT. Apart from the equipment that are being imported that are used for this quarry, the raw material is available here and I wonder why contractors will be talking about cost of aggregate as if these are imported. They are not imported. They are made here.

“So, I really want to encourage this company. It’s really amazing that we have this type of manufacturing going on here and from what the MD said, they have over 800 residents who are working directly here”.

The minister who also expressed concerns over the environmental impact of the quarry however said he has been reassured by the Managing Director that the environmental impact assessment has shown that the company has adhered to the approved standard.

Wike further thanked the Zeberced Group for its decision to expand the access road to the Abuja Industrial Park, which is also being undertaken by the company at the Idu Industrial District and assured of continued support of the government.

He said: “This is the same company that is trying to carry out an Industrial Park at Idu and which we are going to give all the necessary support.

“As of yesterday, I’ve sent out a letter to the Ministry of Finance on the tax credit to enable them to carry out the other one-way carriage to make it a double carriage, which is being done by Salini Construction Company.

Earlier in his remark, the Managing Director, Zeberced Group, Ayden Adil Kurt, said the stone quarry has a production capacity of 3000 tons per hour.

Wike moves to overhaul FCT health infrastructure

In furtherance of revitalising the Federal Capital Territory’s (FCT) healthcare system, the FCT administration has embarked on a comprehensive program aimed at transforming health infrastructure and improving medical services across Abuja.

The initiative is part of a broader effort to ensure that residents, particularly vulnerable groups like pregnant women and children, have access to quality care while transforming the city into a medical hub.

The FCT Mandate Secretary for Health Services and Environment Secretariat, Adedolapo Fasawe, made these announcements during a healthcare outreach in Bwari, Bwari Area Council on Friday.

The event, which saw over 4,000 patients in attendance, was designed to raise awareness about the healthcare services available in the FCT and to encourage citizens to register for the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

The Medical Mission, executed in partnership with the private sector, provided free medical services and agricultural palliatives, including eye care services with free glasses, minor surgeries, sickle cell screening, and blood screening, among others.

FCT Minister of State, Mariya Mahmoud (1st right) consulting for a patient and assisted by FCT Mandate Secretary for Health Services and Environment Secretariat, Adedolapo Fasawe (2nd right) during the Medical Mission held in Bwari, Bwari Area Council of the FCT on Friday, September 13, 2024.

Also, about 3,000 gas cylinders, fertilizer, sorghum, birthing kits, treated mosquito nets, and other health consumables were distributed at no cost to the over 4,000 residents gathered at the event venue.

FCT Minister of State, Mariya Mahmoud, while urging reflecting on the administration’s progress, noted that healthcare is just one part of a broader development agenda that includes education and infrastructure improvements.

“We are now concentrating on education and hospitals. We are renovating existing facilities, building new ones, and employing more healthcare personnel,” she said.

The Minister, a medical doctor, who took time to consult for patients during the Medical Mission, noted that since taking office a year ago, the FCT administration has focused on revitalizing the city and enhancing the quality of life for its residents.

The Health Services and Environment Mandate Secretary, Fasawe, said with a focus on modernising healthcare infrastructure, expanding access to affordable care, and addressing the health needs of vulnerable populations, the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, is poised to make Abuja a model of healthcare excellence in Nigeria.

Underscoring the prioritisation of healthcare by the Wike-led administration, she said: “For any pregnant woman, healthcare is now free, and this extends to the first year of the child’s life.

“Even if a cesarean section is required, it will be covered under our health insurance scheme.

“The administration’s commitment to reducing maternal and infant mortality rates in the region remains unwavering.

“The program wasn’t just about making healthcare more affordable—it was also about showcasing what patients can expect when they register for the NHIS.

“Medical services ranging from antenatal care to eye surgeries were offered to residents, everything we brought here today will remain in the Bwari General Hospital.”

The Mandate Secretary also noted that with many government healthcare facilities in Abuja being outdated, the FCT Minister Wike, known as Mr. Project, has promised to confront the challenge head-on.

She said: “We are starting to look at best practices, building new hospitals, hospitals that people will come from out of state to access quality care.

“We will soon be commissioning new projects to serve the people of Abuja. This is renewed hope for the residents, and we believe that this effort will bring much-needed relief, especially in light of the current socioeconomic situation in the country”.

On the significance of the medical outreach, Fasawe noted that the residents’ positive response and impressive turnout confirmed its importance, adding that the program revealed the pressing need for affordable healthcare in the region, with several patients expressing relief at the services provided.

“Today is an example. Today is a promise fulfilled.

“The outreach is not limited to primary healthcare alone, the program includes antenatal care for pregnant women, dental care, eye surgeries, and nutritional assessments for children and the elderly”, she added.

To further assist families, she explained that the administration has partnered with environmental organizations to distribute gas cookers, aimed at reducing air pollution and easing the burden on mothers.

“We are also addressing climate change, we brought gas cookers to help prevent air pollution, and we’ve distributed fertilizer to the farmers in the area as part of our efforts to improve livelihoods,” the Mandate Secretary noted.

Wike: No apologies for threatening  PDP governors with fire

    • •Says I’ll never support Fubara again
    • •Anger in gov’s camp as PDP grants FCT minister control of Rivers

Federal Capital Territory Minister  Nyesom Wike declared last night that he had no apologies to offer any one for threatening to put fire in any Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)  controlled state undermining his position in the party.

Wike, speaking on Channels Television, also vowed that nothing would ever make him support his  estranged political godson and successor as Rivers State governor, Siminalayi Fubara, again.

Anger swept through the governor’s political camp in Rivers State yesterday following the decision of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the PDP  to hand over the state party’s structures to Wike.

The party’s governors were no less devastated by the NWC’s decision,PDP  sources said.

Wike in the television interview said the communiqué issued by the PDP Governors Forum and read by Bauchi Governor Bala Mohammed in which they pledged their support for Fubara to assume the party’s structure in Rivers State undermined him (Wike), and he only responded accordingly.

He said it did not even matter to the governors  whether their position on the Rivers PDP was legal or not.

“I said to the Governors Forum, and I repeat without any apology to anybody anywhere, heaven will never fall,” he said.

“In fact, when heaven falls, everybody will be at peace. As I sit as  Minister of the FCT from Rivers State, I was a governor.

“Yes, the only person I can say I have no relationship with is the governor of Zamfara. I don’t know him, all other governors I know them, they know me, we have a relationship; and you mean that you want to violate the processes, the constitution of our party; you came out on  national television after your meeting where the governor of Bauchi State, the chairman of PDP Governors Forum, who came out to read a communiqué with his colleagues that they were going to make sure their brother, their friend in River State take over the structure, and it doesn’t matter whether it is illegal or legal.

“And I’m sitting as the Minister of the FCT from that state? You look at it that I am nobody in that state and you make that statement? And you think I should fold my hands because you say you’re a governor, which I was never before? You look at me and tell me that and expect me to fold my hands? And you think everything is well?”

Asked if he regretted his reaction  especially because it connoted violence, Wike shot back: “How can I regret it? I did not make any bad statement…. What is fire, it is  figurative….  I said you want to cause crisis in my state, you too, you’ll have crisis in your state.

“I never said that Bauchi State would be on fire, or that Oyo State will be on fire. What’s my business? All I’m saying is if you don’t want my state to be politically stable, if you want to illegally, unconstitutionally interfere in a legitimate process, in a legal process that is going on, and you want me to fold my hands and say because you are a governor, because you are chairman of the governors’ forum, you will use your position to say people who have been elected and sworn in, NWC, NEC cancel it. Who told you that I don’t have the capacity to say you too in your state, that crisis will be there?”

On Ijaw leader, Chief Edwin Clark who had asked  for Wike’s arrest in response to the threat to put fire in PDP states undermining his position, the minister wondered whether  Clark is a member of the party and whether he pays his dues accordingly.

Responding to a question on how some power brokers in the PDP now see him as a mole in the party, the minister said: “Nobody, no governor today in the PDP, nobody born of a woman can say I’m an outsider. Seun (the interviewer) before I took this appointment, I wrote to PDP, I wrote to PDP national, I wrote to PDP zonal and I wrote to PDP in my state. My governor also signed a letter that I should take the appointment, yes, it’s true.

“The zonal wrote that I should accept. Who in PDP did not write or nominate names to President Tinubu for appointment? They did, yes. Let them come to say they did not do it. You see, the problem we are having in this country is that some people think they’re too smart. They want to use people and I’m not that kind of person. I dare anybody to come out and say I’m a mole.

“In 2023, did I not say I would  not support PDP for president? Did I not say I won’t support them because it was not fair, that it’s against equity, that it’s against justice. Did PDP not win governorship, did PDP not win national assembly and state assembly elections?”

Asked if he was not worried that supporting an Oyigbo or Ogoni candidate as governor for 2007, could cause crisis in Rivers , Wike replied: “I have not told you I am supporting (anyone). I’ve not said so; what I am saying is that because of what they’re doing, it’s like we made a mistake. Ogoni have a right and the Oyigbo have a right to make the statement they have made – whether it will materialise or not is a totally different thing. The question should be, is it workable?”

Will he support Governor Fubara if push comes to shove? He said: “I will never support Fubara in my political life again.”

Asked exactly what the governor’s offence was, Wike said, “No, it’s not about me. People laboured to put up structures, people laboured to put you where you wouldn’t even have taken the 50th position.

“I sacrificed to talk to the Ogoni, I sacrificed to talk to so many people, let us go this way. You turned it that I am asking for 20billion, hundred billion… you turned it to lies against me. I brought you up, put you there, push you here, today, I turned a villain, Wike is demanding. What’s Wike demanding? In politics, you benefit from other people and people benefit from you. Fubara’s supporters  were yesterday burning with anger in reaction to the decision of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the PDP to recognize the recent congresses held by the Wike faction of the party and which in effect leaves the party’s structure in the minister’s hands.

Sources close to the governor’s camp told The Nation in Port Harcourt that the NWC’s action was against PDP’s constitution.

It was understood that some of the supporters were putting pressure on him to decide his  next political move.

The immediate past state Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Sydney Tambara Gbara, said the NWC’s decision was against the norm in the party  which he said recognizes  incumbent governors as party leaders in their states.

Sydney said: “It is unimaginable that any person or group of persons in their right senses will sit down and even want to imagine that. The tradition has always been that the governor of a state inherits the party’s assets and liabilities.

“The governor assumes the head and the leadership of the party. It has been the tradition in Rivers State. This time around can’t be an exemption unless the National Working Committee of the PDP is clearly making it clear to Rivers people that they don’t want us to continue being members of the PDP.

“If that is the case we will also accept that and chart a new course on how to promote our political aspirations in any other platform”.

Sydney, who is also the Commissioner for Environment in Rivers, said the people of Rivers had chosen to pitch their tent with Fubara and to defend his mandate.

“As a people, we have resolved to support Governor Siminialayi Fubara and we have moved on with him. Wherever he is, that is where we are. If he stays in PDP we will stay with him. If he leaves we leave with him”, he said.

Sydney insisted that the decision would have adverse consequences for  PDP and would make the party lose the state unless the NWC reversed its stance.

He said: “You are talking about the people and not a nomenclature. The national working committee should have a proper assessment of their decisions.

“It is definitely not going to go down well with the PDP to lose Rivers. I know what is going on up there. It is like a shopping ground for those who feel they can buy their way through.

“But the reality on ground is that Rivers has pitched their tent with Governor Fubara and have moved on with him whether in PDP or not. Our own party right now is Fubara. Wherever he is is  where we will be.

“If the NWC has decided to hand over the structure to whoever they like, there is no problem, 2027 will decide the party that will rule Rivers”.

Sydney said the body language of the NWC justified the governor’s initial statement that the PDP had disappointed Rivers.

He said: “The governor had said it a long time ago that PDP had disappointed Rivers. He said the NWC has disappointed every one of us. We saw the drama that came up when the same NWC said all the party executives should become caretaker committees for the party for three months and that nobody should be removed.

“But every one of us that supported the governor was conspicuously removed from the state exco. We saw the drama and nobody said anything. The governor started seeing the sabotage and compromise since that time.

“But we are talking about the voice of the people and not the interest of one individual, who is playing God. We are resolute, we are ready for the showdown in Rivers comes 2027”.

Sydney noted that Fubara’s support in Rivers was massive and that nobody could wrestle power from him in 2027.

He said: “I can tell you, nobody can wrestle power from the people. We will defend the mandate of Governor Fubara with every strength and every strand of blood in our system. We are Rivers people.

“We are not afraid of anybody. If they like they should go and bring the US Marine. In 2027 the people will come out and we will speak. It is important that the NWC take note of this and use their tongues to count their teeth and ask themselves whether they still need PDP in Rivers. For us, we have taken our position and our position is Governor Fubara or nothing”.

Also, a former member of the House of Representatives, Bernard Mikko, expressed his disappointment over the NWC’s decision and appealed to Governor Fubara to avoid distraction.

Mikko told the governor to continue with governance and wait for the time of politics, adding that the people were with him and would continue to support him.

He said: “The PDP constitution is clear that the governor is the leader of the party in the state. If the NWC can act in lawlessness, it shows that they have no future for the country they intend to lead.

“Let me remind you that the emergence of a leader will determine how he will lead. You come in through corrupt practices and you will be bound by it because you are a product of corruption.

“So, for the governor, the political party is just a platform to lead. He is now elected governor of Rivers and he has been affirmed by the Supreme Court. Politics should be out of his way for now.

“He should continue to lead Rivers people according to the budget and the constitution. Parties come and go but Rivers will remain. We have seen NRC, SDP and many others.

“He is our governor and we will support him. When the time of politics comes, we will see how one person who is playing God whether he has all the political parties, God and Rivers people will determine the future of Rivers.”

PDP never summoned Wike, says Nwogu

A member of the Disciplinary Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Olaka Nwogu, has said the party never summoned Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister Nyesom Wike.

There had been reports that Wike, a former Governor of Rivers State, was summoned by the party over alleged anti-party activities and his prolonged rift with Governor Siminialayi Fubara.

But Nwogu, a member of the Disciplinary Committee, described the report as false and that the committee had not even sat to discuss issues concerning the minister.

Nwogu, who represented Rivers South East Senatorial District, said individuals familiar with the situation contributed to spreading the misinformation for personal reasons.

The erstwhile lawmaker said there had been various allegations and attempts to misrepresent the committee’s work, stressing that the committee was still organising itself to properly address its responsibilities.

He said: “I am a member of the disciplinary committee of the party. I was disturbed when the report came that Nyesom Wike had been summoned at a time when the disciplinary committee has not even met to consider any of these things.

“There has been a lot of misinformation to the public, sometimes by people who should know better and shouldn’t do that for reasons they know best.

“There are allegations that are flying all over the place; even the committee’s work is being put in a different light from what the committee has tried to do. The committee is still organising itself to now look at its functions.”
