Wike rewards vigilante group for rescuing kidnapped victims in Kwali

The Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr Nyesom Wike, has rewarded a vigilante group in Kwali Area Council for rescuing four kidnapped victims.

The reward included an operational vehicle and an undisclosed cash, to encourage the group to do more.

The rescued victims were presented to Wike at Kaita Gembu, a community in Kwali, on Tuesday, when he visited the area to inspect an ongoing road project.

The minister commended members of the vigilante group for the display of bravery and courage.

He said that the operation vehicle and the undisclosed amount of cash gift was to motivate them to do more in tackling insecurity in their communities.

He urged residents of FCT to work with the FCT Administration to ensure that criminal elements and their evil activities are eliminated in the territory.

Wike explained that the rural road projects across the six area councils of the FCT were part of President Bola Tinubu’s efforts towards boosting economic activities in rural areas.

He said: “We have said before, that Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope Agenda” is not just for the city, it is also for the rural areas.

“While providing infrastructure in the city, we must also provide the same infrastructure in the rural areas.

“There are no roads for people to go to their various farms; there are no roads for people to go to their houses in their villages. The current administration is addressing this challenge.

“Today, this is the second road we are visiting as far as Kwali Area Council is concerned. Where we are standing now is the 11-kilometre road, and you can imagine the impact the road will have when it is completed in December this year.

“Where we are coming from is a 25km road and look how happy the people are. That’s the renewed hope, and that is why we are saying that people should be patient with the government.”

He urged the residents to support ongoing efforts by the current government to improve the livelihood of rural dwellers rather than supporting the Aug. 1 planned protest by selfish individuals.

He called on leaders at all levels within the communities to shun people disguising as anti-government protesters but have the intention to unleash mayhem.

“While the government is doing everything to reduce the level of hunger, the government is also providing basic infrastructure that will improve the economy of our country.

“If you come to the FCT, you will appreciate the fact that government is working. If FCT is working, why are you telling its residents to come and protest?

“No right-thinking government will fold its arms and allow people to come and cause mayhem, destroy properties and then we go back to square one,” Wike said.

Speaking of the kidnapped victims, Mr Danladi Chiya, Chairman, Kwali Area Council, explained that they were abducted from their homes in Kuje Area Council and taking into Kwali forest by the kidnappers.

Chiya assured all vigilante groups in the area council of continued support to enable them support security agencies in tackling the menace of kidnapping in communities.

One of the rescued victims, Mr Isaac Gbemu, said: “We were in our house around midnight when we heard gunshots.

“Initially, we thought it was armed robbers, but when the people broke into the compound, we discovered they were kidnappers.

“They took us away that night and brought us to the bush where we don’t know. We have spent three days before the vigilantes rescued us this morning.”

Reps commend Wike, Tamuno over AICL improved revenue, infrastructure

Members of the House of Representatives’ Committee on the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), led by Hon. Aliyu Muktar Betara have applauded the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike, over ongoing infrastructural development projects across the nation’s capital city.

The lawmakers who spoke during an interactive session with the Group Managing Director of Abuja Investment Company Limited (AICL), Dr. Moreen Tamuno applauded her ingenuity towards improved revenue generation since her assumption of office.

While presenting her scorecard and strategy adopted in the turnaround of Abuja Investment Company Limited to the Committee, Dr. Tamuno disclosed that AICL only manage the District markets not the entire markets across the territory.

According to her, Wuse markets is owned 90 percent by the individuals who bought the shops while AICL owns 10 percent.

“For example, Wuse market is owned 90 percent by the owners, we own 10 percent. What Abuja Management does for Wuse market is to manage the facility there through the toll taking which they do collect on our behalf and then they manage the facilities, they manage the refuse collections and they also work with the market association.”

She noted that AICL cannot increase prices like other privately owned markets across the territory, noting that the prices adopted by AICL are controlled by the government.

She added that the Company is also managing part of the leakages envisaged such as monitoring these system of fares collection which was initially collected manually.

This, according to her, will help to tackle the menace of revenue leakages and help to pay dividends to FCTA coffers.

While responding to question on Abuja Properties, she noted that AICL is saddled with the responsibility of owning properties on behalf of

“Before I got here, apart from two regimes of el-Rufai and Moddibo, the rest regimes, Abuja Property was dealing directly with the Minister. So, we did not have a control over what Abuja Property does suffice me to say. But with the incoming of the new Minister he has streamline the system that all of these people will have direct reporting line.

“So, what they do or what they are meant to do is to manage estates, different cadres of estates for the Middle Class, for the High Class and and different kind of people and also declare profits and pay dividends also which has never been done. But in the last discussion last month, because of the new process that has been set up, they are committed to making sure that they will do this year, to declare dividend to AICL.”

On the Abuja Transport scheme, she noted that “the Abuja AMMCO has been a little epileptic really. Because as we speak I think they have only about 84 buses and then most of the buses are not working. Before I came, I heard they are meant to sell but on our finding, we found out that the calibre of buses we have ASHOK were very strong bus and there was no need to sell, we would see how we could use some of them to repair others and have them running.

“So, they’ve not been able to break even, there are some epileptic problems that we are looking at to see how we can help them.”

On the Abuja Films Village, she said: “we heard the story of Abuja Film Village, even before I became the Group Managing Director, but suffice me to say that for 24 years nobody went to see where is this place. But when I assumed office all I was hearing is don’t go there they kidnap and all of that. But we were able to weather the storm to get to the point in Guzaki.

“We have about 3,000 hectares of land there, which is being encumbered already, we have mining is taking place there. We are working with FCT fortunately I did a memo to the Minister which he has approved graciously and set up an Inter-Ministerial Committee to know where our boundaries are. I saw miners on the plot he was really a tough place to go to.”

She explained that the Committee is expected to come up with the report to secure the parameters around the land and see what AICL could achieve there.

While noting that the entertainment industry is a thriving Sector, she explained that AICL has met some Stakeholders including Actors Guild who are already partnering with the company, with a view to stimulate the economy and create employment.

She noted that the company which was established over 30 years ago has metamorphosed to become an Holding Company is an investment arm of FCT and a Limited Liability Company, hence not in the Federal Government budget.

According to her, the two administrations ago set up other subsidiaries that suppose to work under AICL namely Power Launch which is a Leasing Company and Abuja Urban Mass Transit Company, Abuja Property Development and Abuna Market.

She added that AICL also has other subsidiaries namely Aso Savings, Abuja Tech Village where AICL owns 20 percent equity, and 6 percent with Abuja Intercontinental Hotel formerly known as Sheraton Hotel. She however noted that during the meeting held with the Hotel’s management, that the Hotel has recapitalized and gone PLC, thereby AICL share has reduced to 3 percent.

While noting that AICL is still in talk with Abuja Intercontinental Hotel since 3 percent is not sufficient to be on the board of the Hotel because it’s a nominal shareholder and could only go to General Meeting, efforts are ongoing to improve the system with a view to regularize the percentages of investment.

She noted that efforts are also being made to ensure that the company’s staff are well motivated by embarking on a lot of capacity building and to drive them to ensuring that we return dividends to owners which is FCT.

Dr. Tamuno who assured that the present AICL under her watch cannot afford to “leave FCT the way it was,” disclosed that her team has developed a “revolution in AICL. If you’ve ever been to the office before my resumption and you come now, from the gate you would know that there’s a change.

“We definitely are building bridges, we definitely are looking at how to reposition AICL and making progress. We’ve not had it good, thank God for the responsive Minister who listens and who’s ready to work to recapitalize. We have the muscle to weather what we are faced with.”

While thanking the lawmakers for the support and trust reposed in her team, Dr. Tamuno said: “Thank you Mr. Chairman for this opportunity to be able to tell you what Abuja Investment is all about but I want to reassure you that as your Junior Colleague, you can be sure that coupled with the fact that women want to do what we have to do, so we can sleep well. I will be able to do the needful and make cintei to FCT and of course to the renewed hope agenda of Mr. President, that I will do.”

Speaking after the AICL Group Managing Director’s presentation, Hon. Betara said: “As discussed with the Committee, you see a lot of members not you, before coming into Abuja Investment, but for us with the discussion we did to your previous team I told you, I was disappointed. Now I realize why the Minister of FCT is bringing in new hands into FCT.

“We know you, with the little time you came in, revenue has come up and we hope you’re not coming down.

“And I will advise you anybody that you’re not ready to work with, remove the person so that you can work well. The Committee is ready to support you and support FCT in general.”

On his part, Hon. Timilehin Adelegbe (APC-Ondo) who showered encomium on the new AICL management team led by Mrs. Tamuno said: “I met her when she was an Ambassador to Jamaica. I think in the whole Pacific she transformed Jamaica she’s very aggressive.

“So, when she was reeling out her achievements I think we have just seen little. What we need as a House is to encourage her and also urge her to do a holistic audit of staff who may be dragging you back which is very very important.”

On his part, Hon. Kanice More (APC-Imo), who applauded President Bola Tinubu for being gender sensitive in the appointment of women into critical sector of the economy, underscored the need to encourage the AICL Group Managing Director to achieve more fears.

He said: “I thank His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu for demonstration of gender sensitivity, inclusivity and friendliness in appointing a Lady, a Woman ans she has demonstrated capacity. I took time to study her, and I’ve listened to her, she started newly we should equally encourage her and I strongly believe that with more encouragement she will do more; and of course, to whom more is given, more is expected.”

Also speaking, Hon. Regina Akume (APC-Benue) said: “Madam, I want to thank you, before I’m seeing a spirit of its not my problem and it’s not my business, it’s government’s business, it’s not my business, that’s the spirit I’m seeing in here.

“And I want advise you all, that as long as you do not take property seriously, you cannot even make your own business because what a man sows he reaps.

“So, please government is for all of us. If you’re put there to do something, I know women are good managers, yes we women are good managers. So put all the broken pieces out them together and make us proud. That’s what I’m asking of you because there’s so much there that you can do. There’s so much laxity and it’s not right. The Chairman has said it, he net with you all, he will support them. But you must make him proud.”

While applauding the achievements recorded so far under the leadership of the FCT Minister, Hon. Betara said: “You have a Minister that’s a Lawyer, maybe that’s why you guys have improved.

“You guys need to improve. He doesn’t tolerate and if it is with law, he knows everything. So, for the Committee, if there’s anything we will require from you before we start the oversight, we are going to write you.”

Protest: Abuja inhabitants back Tinubu, Wike, seek dialogue

Abuja’s original inhabitants under the aegis of the Abuja Aborigines Network (AAN) have thrown their weight against the planned nationwide protests slated for August 1st.

President of the 6000-member strong Network, Dr. Donald Amagbo, at the weekend, sought dialogue instead of protests while speaking with reporters after an anti-protest town hall meeting called by the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike in Abuja.

Amagbo, who expressed total condemnation of the planned protests on behalf of thousands of his Network members, added that they were ready to resist the protest because it was calculated to cause anarchy and make Nigeria ungovernable.

Pledging to support relevant agencies in the maintenance of peace and order in Abuja during the protest period, Amagbo, hailed Wike for introducing reforms in the FCT Administration and for transforming the nation’s capital in less than 12 months.

He said: “We hereby condemn in totality and are ready to resist the planned protest designated to take place in some landmark cities in Nigeria, including Abuja.

“Our investigations have confirmed that the protest is aimed at causing anarchy and making Nigeria ungovernable as a failed state hence we (Abuja Aborigines Network) hereby pledge to support security agencies to fish out all undesirable elements that may wish to hijack the protests.

“Yes, we also feel the pains but dialogue should be the best way out, therefore our members will resist the protest because we don’t want the ensuing unrest that will distract the FCT from the good work he’s in the nation’s capital”.

Recall there have been plans of nationwide protests against inflation which has brought untold hardship on Nigerians.

He said protests would further set Nigeria backward.

  • Nyesom Wike’s alibi

    Nyesom Wike’s alibi

For all his faults, the chief of which is impatience in the Rivers State imbroglio, former governor and now FCT minister Nyesom Wike cannot be accused of not being lionhearted or of lacking in imaginativeness. Many governors have responded admirably to the protest threat consternating the country, but some others, particularly in the Southwest, have been laid-back. Not Mr Wike. After spending billions building and upgrading infrastructure in Abuja, he fears that any protest that gets out of hand would imperil his work and the city itself. So he has fixed a sort of mini festival for Abuja, an alibi to coincide with August 1.

According to him, “That is the day FCT has set aside for the entire area councils to jubilate and give out certificates of recognition to their traditional rulers. We will not allow that day that FCT has set aside to honour their traditional rulers for their people to rejoice, and then somebody will come and disrupt that day. We will not allow it. That day is not available for those who want to protest, and FCT is not available for the protesters.”

A test of wills is afoot. But Mr Wike has repeatedly proved he is adept at squaring up to every foe, however that foe is described. What is clear is that the protest organisers will not get the Eagle Square for their revelry. They will perhaps hope that the streets will be more accommodating. August 1 will tell.

Election losers want to overthrow government through protest, says Wike

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Nyesom Wike has vowed to resist any protest geared towards overthrowing the present government.

Wike claimed there are people who lost elections and want to stage the proposed protest to achieve their aim.

He said this while speaking at a town hall meeting with FCT stakeholders organised by the FCT Administration on Saturday.

The Minister, who called on all to be patient with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, assured that all the issues on ground would be tackled very soon, adding that Tinubu has the capacity to do much more and further deliver the dividends of democracy.

Wike urged people to shun the planned protest which he said will further bring a setback to the nation.

He said: “There are politicians who want to be in power at all cost, who are these people who want to protest. Even on social media that have applied to me to grant the Eagle Square for protest. Do you apply to me through social media?  You will write to the office of the minister, I will see you, and ask you how many days do you want to spend? How much will you pay?

“There are people who lost elections, the only way they can be relevant is to overthrow the government in whichever way. We will not allow that. I have seen all kinds of threats that I will die tomorrow, I know I will die one day, so you do not need to remind me of that. If I die tomorrow, you are not the one that killed me, it is my time. I will die the day God says I will die.

“If Abuja is working, Nigeria will work. When we came on board so many people cried out that things were not moving. But by the grace of God with the support we had from President Tinubu there are changes. And we are committed to making more changes. When we came in, insecurity was so high. For the first time we went out to all the area councils, we spoke with the Chiefs, Muslim and Christian leaders, youths, women, and other stakeholders and we asked them what they want us to do, the government alone cannot do it.

“And with the support that you have given with the security agencies you can attest to the fact that the situation is different. We are not saying that we have brought insecurity to the end, nobody in this world, no country that there is no insecurity.

“Afterall they nearly killed Trump recently. If it was in Nigeria now we would have said our security agencies are not working and that things have failed. Yesterday (Friday) they sabotaged the train system in Paris, keeping over 800 thousand people stranded. If it was here they would say that our security people are not working. And that is an advanced country.

“Nobody can say that you can completely eliminate insecurity. If they tell you everyday what they do everyday to secure us.You will be shocked. Hundreds of criminals are arrested everyday, prosecuted everyday. If they let you know, it will put fear in you. Very soon we will start building security stations as they requested in the area councils. How can we now see all these and people will say nothing has been done or nothing is happening. Let us be sincere to ourselves. I agree that we have the problem of hunger.

“We have a duty to provide food and we also have a duty to provide infrastructure. This problem we are talking about is not a problem of today. That is why when you see a decayed economy, you need leadership that will bring policies. Now the president has said there are problems and there are challenges, I have the capacity to face the problems and challenges”.

On the issue of granting the Eagle Square for protest, Wike said: “I watch some people on channel news telling the Inspector -General of Police that they have applied. You don’t apply to me through channels TV. You must apply properly. You must pay what we call security cost. So that if there is any damage to the facility, we will use that security cost to repair. People have applied in months, so it must be first come, first serve.

“Protest does not solve any problem. Protest creates small problems because hoodlums will always want to take advantage in order to cause a crisis. I have always said that there is nothing wrong, it is your right to protest, but it will be within the ambit of the law. A protest that is geared towards destruction, and geared to overthrow the government then that is not a legitimate protest”.

Religious leaders, women societies among other stakeholders vowed to ensure that peace reign and assured that they will not be part of the forthcoming protest.

The Minister also went to Kuje where he urged residents to shun the planned protest and support the present administration.

FCT not available for protesters Aug. 1 – Wike

Following the proposed August 1 nationwide protest, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike on Thursday, July 25, said the administration will not allow protests in the nation’s capital.

The minister said this while briefing reporters after an emergency security meeting, with security chiefs in FCT.

He said August 1 has been set aside to present certificates of recognition to traditional rulers of the six Area Councils in FCT.

Wike said: “That is the day FCT has set aside for the entire area councils to jubilate, to give out certificates of recognition for their traditional rulers.

“We will not allow that day that FCT has set aside to honour their traditional rulers; for their people to rejoice, and then somebody will come and disrupt that day. We will not allow it.

“We want people to come out and celebrate, as part of the achievement of the current administration.

“That day is not available for those who want to protest and FCT is not available for the protesters”.

He said the Security Council was aware of the threat of the protest and what some people may call “end bad governance.”

While acknowledging that people have the right to protest or demonstrate, Wike said such rights must be done within the ambit of the law.

The minister said: “This period, we think that all Nigerians should work collectively to salvage our country.

“I am aware that there are challenges, but President Bola Tinubu and his team are working right now to ensure that these challenges, these problems facing our country are addressed.

“We know that it is a very difficult period for citizens; Tinubu has come out clearly to say that there are challenges; there are problems, but these challenges and problems will be tackled”.

The minister expressed confidence in President Bola Tinubu’s capacity to address the present challenge and urged all Nigerians to be patient.

He said: “For instance in FCT, we have seen the changes in FCT; we have seen that the government is working.

The minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has urged Nigerians in the Diaspora to invest in infrastructure projects in Abuja, by working closely with the FCT Administration as well as other relevant authorities to identify key areas of needs and opportunities for collaboration.

Wike noted that their insights, expertise, and financial resources can play critical roles in enhancing basic infrastructure, amenities, and overall quality of life in Nigeria’s capital city.

Represented by Mandate Secretary, FCT Social Development Secretary (SDS), Alh. Ibrahim Aminu, the minister commended the organizers for their efforts in creating the platform for engagement and knowledge exchange between the Diaspora community and youth.

He spoke on Tuesday, July 16, at the opening ceremony of one week of ICT training organized to mark 2024 NIDO Worldwide Diaspora Week, in collaboration with FCTA.

He noted that there are countless ways in which their investments can leave a lasting impact and transform the landscape of Nigeria’s capital city for the better.

He said: “Together, we can build a stronger, more resilient Abuja that serves as a model for sustainable urban development and innovation. By tapping your talents and resources, we can create enduring partnerships that can drive inclusive growth, ensure job creation, and improve the standard of living of our people.
