  • Wike to be served by substituted means

The Justice Umar Dogon-daji-led Rivers State Governorship Electoral Tribunal has granted the governorship candidate of Action Democratic Party (ADP), Victor Fingesi, leave to serve the Governor-elect, Nyesom Wike, his petition by substituted means.

Justice Dogon-daji granted Fingesi’s request at the tribunal’s inaugural sitting at the High Court yesterday.

The tribunal also granted the African Action Congress (AAC) candidate, Biomakpo Awara, and of the Labour Party, Nwonwu, leave to equally serve the governor by substituted means.

The panel ordered that the trio serve the governor-elect by way of pasting the petition on the gates of the Government House or through the courier services.

Fingesi last week approached the tribunal to challenge Wike’s victory in the March governorship election despite the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) saying the election was marred by violence and irregularities, leading to the suspension of result collation.

He, therefore, sued INEC and Wike for the perceived erroneous declaration.

The tribunal also adjourned till today, ruling on the motion by Fingesi for an interlocutory order to him to inspect INEC election materials.

  • Wike: Army staged coup against Rivers

Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike has alleged that the Army staged a coup against Rivers State during the general elections. He described the action as the worst in the country’s democratic history.

Wike, who addressed the joint House of Representatives Committees on Army, Police, Human Rights and Justice at the Government House in Port Harcourt yesterday, said the Army acted illegally because they were working to impose a pre-determined leadership on Rivers State.

He said: “It is really unfortunate; all of us know that there was a coup in this state, organised by the Army. In the history of this country, it has never happened where, during ordinary election, Army will begin to kill people for no just cause.

“Because they believe a particular person or a particular party must win, it doesn’t matter how many people die. It was shown on television. We watched how the Army invaded the whole electoral commission.

“This is the only state the Federal Government has never assisted to fight insecurity.  Instead of us to team up and fight insecurity, you politicise it. Even if you make recommendations, nothing will happen. I don’t know whether we are in a military regime or civil administration.”

The governor noted that aside the Army, the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (F-SARs) has been a major anti-democratic force in the state since the 2016 rerun elections.

He lamented that F-SARs murdered a PhD Holder and Chartered Accountant because they wanted to subvert the people’s will.

The governor wondered why the General Officer Commanding 6 Division of the Army was still unpunished despite the negative roles he played during the elections.

“The GOC here is a politician. Nothing has happened to him because he was sent. If it was when the country was a country, you cannot be keeping that GOC. He is sabotaging the security network,” he added.

  • Wike gets seven days to reopen Rivers NDDC office

Youths of the Niger Delta states have given Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike seven days to unseal headquarters of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) on Aba road in Port Harcourt.

The youths, drawn from the nine states in the region, warned Wike to reopen the commission’s office within the seven days or face stiff and sustainable protests and unrests.

They spoke under the aegis of the Consolidated Youths of Niger Delta (CYN), led by the National Coordinator, Comrade Frank Naday.

Naday, who addressed reporters after their emergency meeting in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital, explained that the office was sealed about a week ago over non-remittances of revenues due to the government.

He said: “From our findings and the information available to us, it is clear that the commission has paid the backlog of money it owes the Rivers State government. We ask the government to unseal the commission’s office complex to enable workers gain access to their offices.

“NDDC is bigger than Rivers State because it covers the Niger Delta region. We know the state government is trying to play politics with the commission because the system feels threatened that the Prof. Nelson Brambaifa-led administration is doing well.”

The youths, who worried that efforts at addressing their plights through the NDDC were being thwarted by the Rivers State government, appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari to intervene as the peace in the region may be truncated.

“In a couple of months that the new leaders assumed office, they have been able to pay contractors and return them back to sites, they have addressed the problem of water hyacinths too. It is also on record that the students studying abroad have received their stipends and their fees paid.

“The rate of construction in the Niger Delta is on the increase as almost all states in the region are experiencing massive road construction.

“We condemn the actions of the Rivers State government and urge it to leave NDDC alone because shutting the office is doing more harm than good,” Naday added.

  • Support Wike to succeed, PDP chairman urges Rivers people

THE Rivers State Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Felix Obuah, has urged people of the state to support the state  governor, Nyesom Wike, of PDP to succeed. He also admonished Christians in Rivers to use the Easter celebration to pray for the continued peace of the state.

Obuah, yesterday in his Easter message, stated that the prayers of Rivers people would go a long way to engender good governance and uplift the wellbeing of the people. He described the Easter period as a moment of sacrifice, when the Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, gave Himself as a ransom to redeem humanity from sins.

Obuah  stressed that the price for Christ’s death for mankind was immeasurable, noting that the Christian faith was anchored on His death and resurrection. He said: “It would have been unimaginable what would have befallen Christianity if Jesus had not resurrected after telling the world that he would die and rise on the third day.”

The Rivers PDP chair also urged Rivers people to make sacrifices through prayers and fasting for the success of the second term administration of Wike, stressing that the  governor needed prayers for God’s favour and mercies, in order to be able to meet the socio-economic needs of the people. He added: “Rivers governor, as a human being, is also faced with challenges associated with governance. We should support him with our prayers.”

  • Wike cautions against ‘avoidable journeys’

Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike has advised National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members posted to the state to avoid unnecessary journeys during their one-year mandatory national service.

The governor spoke yesterday at the closing of the three-week orientation camp activities for Batch “A” NYSC members at the permanent orientation camp in Nonwa Gbam, Tai Local Government Area.

Wike, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary in the Office of the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dr George Nweke, noted that some journeys NYSC members embarked on during their service years, which turned into tragedies, were avoidable.

“Let me also tell you that you must resist the lure of unnecessary and unauthorised journeys, which in the past have resulted in unpleasant consequences for corps members. Your lives are precious to us as a government in Rivers State and to the Federal Government, as well as your families; hence the need for you to stay alive,” he said.

The NYSC State Coordinator, Mr Chinwendu Chukwu, advised head teachers not to reject corps members.

To the corps members, he said: “I charge you to accept your postings in good faith and work very hard wherever you are posted to uphold the core values of the NYSC scheme in making positive impacts in the lives of the good people of the state.

“I also seize this opportunity to call on all stakeholders and corps employers, especially principals of public and private secondary schools, to accept the services of the corps members posted to them and utilise them efficiently to enhance the educational standard of the pupils in the various communities.”

  • 2019 elections: Wike asks for forgiveness

Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike has apologised to the people for all they went through during the election.

Wike specially asked for forgiveness from anyone he might have offended while pursuing his political ambition.

The governor, who spoke yesterday during a family thanksgiving at the Salvation Ministry Headquarters in Port Harcourt, noted that despite the political turmoil, nobody died.

He also forgave anyone who offended him, and urged everyone holding anything against him to let go.

Wike said: “Nobody won and nobody lost the elections; but Rivers State has won. I forgive anyone who wronged me and I also ask for forgiveness from those that I have wronged.”

The governor reiterated that his victory, which marks a new beginning for the state, is for everybody.

“We have come here to give God thanks because he is so faithful to us. We have come to thank God for fighting on our behalf. It is only God who can fight for us. We have no power of our own to fight,” he added.

Wike also thanked the Presiding Pastor of Salvation Ministry, David Ibiyeomie, for his spiritual support during the long drawn political battle, saying he  was strengthened by the cleric and his confidence restored when he faltered in faith.

Pastor Ibiyeomie asked God to accept the governor’s thanksgiving and bless him.

He said by the special thanksgiving, God will perfect everything that concerns Wike and his family.

The cleric decreed God’s wisdom on Wike, asking God to grant him the enablement to lead the State in the right direction.
