    Council ward clinches title at alliance tournament

    Season 3 of Orekoya Alliance Tournament has ended at Yabatech in Lagos, with matches highlighting the passion and skill of grassroots football.

     Somolu Ward E’s Segun Daniel scored just four minutes into the game, to put the ward to victory

    Daniel weaved through his opponent’s, Bariga Ward E’s defence and unleashed a powerful heading that found the back of the net.

    The remainder of the first half saw intense competition, with both teams showcasing strong defensive strategies and creating scoring opportunities. Despite efforts from Bariga Ward E to equalise, Somolu’s defence held firm as the first half ended with Somolu Ward E leading 1-0.

    In the second half, Bariga Ward E came with renewed determination, launching aggressive attacks. However, their hopes were dashed when Somolu Ward E’s No. 8 took advantage of a defensive lapse. Seizing the opportunity, he slotted a second goal past the Bariga goalkeeper, extending Somolu’s lead.

    The match ended with Somolu Ward E securing a 2-0 victory, celebrating Somolu’s back-to-back win in the tournament. Somolu Ward F, led by the late Coach Segun Elliot defeated his counterpart from Bariga to lift the trophy.

    The performance of Daniel and the No. 8 was instrumental in their team’s triumph, earning them accolades from fans and teammates.

    YABATECH appoints new bursar, registrar

    The authorities of Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) have announced the appointment of Mr. John Olusola Dada as the new substantive bursar and Mrs. Henrietta Adebola Gbemisola Badejo as the new substantive registrar.

    According to a statement issued by the Acting Registrar, Dr. E. J. A. Akinwale, on December 10, 2024, the appointments were approved by the institution’s Governing Council. Both officials are set to serve a five-year tenure starting January 2, 2025.

    Mr. Dada, the incoming bursar, hails from Efon Alaaye in Ekiti State and is an alumnus of CAC Grammar School, Efon Alaaye, and The Federal Polytechnic, Ado Ekiti, among other institutions.

    Olusola Dada, a Professional Accountant, Management and Financial expert, is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (FCA); Associate Member, Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (ACTI); Associate Member, Chartered Institute of Management Accountant of Nigeria (ACIMA)

    With a combination of 30 years of working experience across the Polytechnic,  University and the Private Sectors, Olusola Dada has received several commendations on the job, in professional and community services, inclusive of five different times from Yabatech Management ( 5 times) 2008, 2009, 2020, 2022, 2023 & 2024)

    The Commendations received by the new YCT Bursar among others are on: Proper Accounting Records on TETFund Activities; Computerization and Digitalization of the Bursary Department;

     An accomplished Chartered Accountant, Auditor and ICAN Fellow, Olusola Dada has also played several pivotal professional roles and leadership services for the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria at the National,  sub national and ICAN Districts Society levels. He is married with children.

    YABATECH student wins essay contest

    A student at Yaba College of Technology  has won  the 7th edition of the Mrs. ‘Debola Osibogun National Essay Competition organised by the Chartered Institute of Bankers (CIBN).

    The competition, which was the 7th Edition was held at the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja and involved undergraduates of Banking and Finance and Allied courses in Nigeria Tertiary Institutions.

    The competition saw Miss Thelma Chinazor Ugochukwu, an HND 2 student of the Department of Banking and Finance as the winner of the oral interview, following a rigorous interview with prominent Human Resource Executives from various banks.

    The Deputy Director, Capacity Building Certification and Standard Directorate of the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIBN) remarked that the feat could not have been achieved without the faculty/school and the students who have worked exceptionally hard to get to this level.

    In  the same vein, the Head of the Department of Banking and Finance, Dr. Adebola Adebisi was recognized for her contributions, dedication and unwavering commitment to the betterment of the educational experience for a substantial number of students.

    Presenting the award to the college, the rector, Dr Ibraheem Abdul, expressed delight over the feats achieved by the department.

    He praised the staff and students for their doggedness and fighting spirit of accomplishing the feat which made the institution proud.

    The rector urged the awardees not to rest on their oars with an assurance that the college will continue to assist the department and school towards adding more laurel in future.

    Yabatech to honour First Lady, Abbas

    Yaba College of Technology (Yabatech) will at its 36th convocation ceremony confer the institution’s prestigious fellowship award on the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, and House of Representatives Speaker Tajudeen Abbas.

    The institution’s Rector, Dr. Ibraheem Abdul, announced this while addressing reporters at the pre-convocation media briefing yesterday in Lagos.

    The rector said the institution’s achievements in public service were reflected in its values of dedication, integrity, and excellence, which are needed to inspire its students.

    He said the college was proud to have the two distinguished personalities in its family.

    Dr. Abdul said Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu will deliver this year’s convocation lecture, titled: Developing Exportable Alternatives for Nigeria’s Economic Recovery, while Vice President Kashim Shettima will chair the occasion.

    The rector said through the convocation lecture, Sanwo-Olu will bring his experience about the most prosperous state in Nigeria to bear on the topic.

    Commenting on the convocation highlights, the rector said 8,139 students, who have demonstrated diligence and commitment to their studies, will graduate from the school.

    He added that the college will kick off the ceremonies with a special Jumat service, which will be followed by an interdenominational church service on Sunday at the Yusuf Grillo Art Auditorium within the college.

    ‘YABATECH tourism plans align with govt agenda’

    The Chairman of Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH), Yaba,  Lagos,  Prof.  Funsho Afolabi, has announced that the college’s tourism plans align with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda. He made this statement during the 2024 United Nations World Tourism Day celebration at YABATECH’s Epe campus, held together with the Nigerian Tourism Development Authority (NTDA) Southwest Zone. The  theme of the event was: Tourism and Peace.

    Afolabi noted that the event created a platform for meaningful discussions and engaging activities such as exhibitions, cultural displays, and interactive sessions.

    He said the initiatives are focused at establishing theories and practices that emphasise the positive connection between tourism and peace, in support of the government’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

    Afolabi explained that the United Nations’ recent focus on tourism and peace aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision under the Renewed Hope Agenda, adding that YABATECH’s Department of Tourism Management Technology (TMT) at its Epe campus is playing a major role in supporting this vision.

    The Chairman talked about different  forms of tourism, including domestic, inbound, and outbound tourism. He also noted that YABATECH’s TMT department, in work with NTDA, is leading the way among educational institutions in complying with United Nations’ guidelines on tourism statistics.

    He described how the department has become a vital part of the United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO), using higher education through tourism to promote world peace.

    YABATECH Rector, Dr Ibrahim Abdul, emphasised that World Tourism Day is a celebration of the planet’s beauty and the diverse cultures that enrich lives. He explained that tourism is important fostering understanding, peace, and international cooperation, noting that it is about more than just visiting new places—but  connecting with the lives, traditions, and stories of others.

    Abdul urged the participants to support tourism’s positive effects by adopting sustainable and responsible practices. He also stressed the strong part tourism plays in the economic importance, which creates jobs, boosts local economies, and promotes cultural exchange. He reminded participants of their responsibility to protect the environment and communities they visit, ensuring that these treasures are preserved for future generations.

    Head of the Department of Tourism Management Technology, Dr. O.L. Adedayo, underscored the relevance of the 2024 theme. She explained that tourism fosters cultural understanding, peaceful coexistence, and unity between nations.

    Adedayo encouraged reflection on how tourism can be further leveraged to promote peace, tolerance, and mutual respect in Nigeria and beyond.

    Deputy Zonal Coordinator of NTDA, Mrs. Alice Adesola, speaking on behalf of Director-General, Chief Folorunsho Coker, emphasised the importance of tourism in daily life. She reassured students that pursuing a career in tourism is promising and that the industry has immense potential in Nigeria, offering significant economic benefits.

    The event featured vibrant cultural displays from Yoruba, Hausa, Igbo, and Egun groups, organised by the Tourism Management Technology Department. Retired Head of Department Mr. Gabriel Okunola was honoured for his contributions to the department, while Hon. Samson Apata, Chairman of the Association of Tourism Practitioners in Nigeria (ATPN), Lagos Chapter, presented an award to  Afolabi in recognition of his efforts in advancing tourism education at YABATECH.

    Yabatech admits  8,200 of over 21,000

    Yaba College of Technology,(YABATECH) has admitted  8,202 candidates  to the institution out of 21,530 that applied.

    The Rector, Dr Ibraheem Adedotun Abdul, made this known at the college’s 2023/2024 academic session matriculation ceremony on campus.

    He added that 1,335 candidates applied for the Bachelor of Science (B. Sc (Ed) Education programmes of the college in affiliation with the University of Nigeria Nsukka and only 507 candidates were offered admission for  the School of Technical Education.

    According to him, in Higher National Diploma (HND) programmes of the college, 5,685 candidates applied but 3,342 candidates were admitted. 

    He noted  that at National Diploma (ND) 14,510) applied for admission,  while 4,353 candidates were admitted having been found successful in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), and the screening conducted by the college.

    Abdul admonished the students to be serious with their studies.

    “As you step through the doors of this institution, you are not just students; you are future leaders, innovators, and change-makers. The journey that you are about to undertake will be filled with challenges and triumphs, and it is a journey that will shape not only your academic and professional lives but also your character and values.

    “Here, we pride ourselves on fostering an environment that encourages innovation, critical thinking, and creativity and you will be surrounded by distinguished lecturers who are not only experts in their fields but also passionate about nurturing the next generation of scholars. You are encouraged to engage with them, ask questions, and make the most out of the resources available to you,” he said.

    The Rector noted  that  75 percent lecture attendance is a prerequisite that qualifies students to write examinations at the end of the semester and any student that fails to meet the mandatory requirement will not be allowed.

    The chairman, Governing Council,   Prof.  ‘Funso Isolaowa Afolabi, encouraged the matriculants to take full advantage of the resources available to them, engage in academic and extracurricular activities, seek guidance and collaborate with their peers.

    He advised the students to remember that education is not confined to the classroom alone as it is enriched by their experiences, interactions and exploration beyond textbooks.

    He emphasised the importance of values, integrity, respect and responsibility and the need to be responsible citizens of Nigeria.

    He  lauded parents and guardians for their support and for believing in their children.

    Afolabi urged the new students to embrace the challenges ahead with courage and confidence, adding that there will be times of difficulty, but they should always remember that every challenge is an opportunity for growth.

    The Rector, Yaba College of Technology, Dr Ibraheem Abdul, has said investing in girls’ education is crucial for the future of families, communities, and nations, stressing that  educated women tend to make healthier choices for themselves and their families, contribute to economic growth, and uplift their communities.

    He spoke at the commencement of the training of 5,250 girls in Lagos State with the inauguration of  the 50- seat capacity  Information Communication Technology Hub in collaboration with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF). 

    The training, Girls Education Skills Partnership is aimed at enhancing education and skills in  a digital landscape.

    Abdul highlighted the significance of the GESP Tech Hub as a milestone for the broader community, college and Lagos State at large. 

    He urged stakeholders to collaborate in overcoming the barriers to girls’ education, such as socio-economic disparities, cultural norms, and insufficient resources in various regions. “This program addresses these challenges directly by fostering a supportive and inclusive environment where girls can excel both academically and personally,” he noted.

    The  Girls’ Education and Skills Partnership (GESP) programme is to provide girls with vital life skills, technical training, and leadership opportunities, enabling them to chase their dreams.

     Abdul noted that by working with local communities, government agencies, NGOs, and industry partners, they aim to create a comprehensive framework that meets the diverse needs of participants.

    He acknowledged the contributions of Project Coordinator Dr Funmilayo Doherty and her team, including Dr. Idowu Aneyo and Mr. Amos Alade, as well as project partners such as the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and Generation Unlimited, in successfully launching the Tech Hub.

    He sought a  collective effort from educators, industry leaders, and community members to create a society where every girl has equal opportunities to learn, grow, and succeed. “Seize this opportunity, engage fully in the program, and remember that education is about empowering yourself to make informed choices and pursue your passions,” he encouraged.

    Earlier, Doherty highlighted the crucial need to tackle the significant challenge of inadequate practical and industry-relevant skills among female graduates. 

    “Many students, particularly girls, who complete their education often lack the practical, industry-relevant skills essential for employment. This skills gap contributes to high unemployment rates, hindering the nation’s economic growth,” she said.

    She further noted that the workforce is ill-prepared to meet the demands of modern industries and the global economy, stating that the GESP program represents a bold and innovative response to these challenges, especially in the ICT sector. 

    “We are equipping our young women with the tools they need to succeed and positioning them as leaders within their communities and contributors to the national economy.

    “This programme transcends mere education; it symbolizes our commitment to gender equality and the empowerment of women. Through collaborations with industry and academia, gender-responsive teaching methods, and the creation of inclusive learning spaces, the GESP programme aims to dismantle barriers that have historically limited girls’ involvement in STEM and TVET fields. We are not just providing training; we are fostering the confidence and resilience of our young women, ensuring they receive the necessary support to excel in traditionally male-dominated sectors,” she said.

     Executive Secretary of the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), Dr Idris Bugaje represented by South West Director Elder Ayo Aroge, pledged the board’s support for the initiative, aligning it with their mandate to promote technical and vocational education across the nation.

    UNICEF’s Project Officer in Nigeria, Babagana Aminu, thanked the college for launching the Tech Hub, assuring that they would provide essential technical support as partners to ensure the successful implementation of the training for the girls.

    The Lagos State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Hon. Bolaji Cecilia Dada, committed the State Government’s readiness to collaborate with YabaTech and other stakeholders to eliminate barriers impeding girls’ education, enabling them to reach their full potential and contribute to the economic development of the state and the nation.

    Mrs. Anike Adekanye,an educationist, who represented the Wife of Lagos State Governor, Dr Ibironke Sanwo-Olu, praised the initiative, promising necessary support to enhance girls’ education and empowerment for rapid economic growth in the state and  nation.

    Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) is poised to boost girl-child representation and commitment to female empowerment in engineering course of study and other Science Technology and Engineering eelated fields.
    The rector, Dr Ibraheem Abdul gave this submission during the courtesy visit paid to him by the Association of Professional Women Engineers of Nigeria (APWEN) held at college Council Chamber.
    He expressed his enthusiasm for the visit and reiterated the college’s commitment to supporting APWEN’s goals; stating the necessity of the town and gown relationship as it plays crucial roles in providing students with practical and real-world exposure.
    Abdul announced the college’s plans to establish Industry Advisory Committees within each faculty to foster closer ties between the college and relevant industries by ensuring that the curriculum remains aligned with current industry standards and that graduates are equipped with the necessary skills to excel in their careers.
    The rector frowned at the prevalent concerns regarding “half-baked” graduates, stressing that YABATECH is determined to change this narrative by producing graduates who are not only knowledgeable but also industry-ready.
    He acknowledged that increasing the representation of women in engineering is a priority for the college and lauded APWEN’s initiatives in this regard.
    In a significant move towards empowering female students, Dr. Abdul revealed that college recently secured a $1 million grant to advanced professional and skills training for female students, particularly those pursuing careers in STEM.

    Abdul assured APWEN members that the college is committed to transforming its students, especially young women into job creators rather than job seekers.
    He promised that the college would not relent at sponsoring desired staff at participating in various conferences, seminars, and professional development programs to further enhance their skills and career prospects.
    The rector reiterated the college openness to collaborations, partnerships, and linkages that would benefit both students and faculty, particularly in the context of advancing the cause of women in engineering and other STEM fields.
    He assured that the college is poised to play a leading role in shaping a future where female engineers are not only welcomed but also thrive in their chosen fields.
    The courtesy visit, led by APWEN’s President, Dr Adebisi Osini, outlined the association’s objectives, emphasizing the need for mentorship, increased female participation in STEM, and the promotion of career development opportunities for women engineers.

    Osini emphasized APWEN’s mission to mentor and guide young engineers, with a particular focus on encouraging more girls to pursue engineering and other STEM courses.
    She pointed out that guidance is essential in nurturing the next generation of female engineers.
    She also advocated for the college’s support in sponsoring programs, workshops, and conferences aimed at enhancing the skills of both students and faculty members in the engineering fields.

    Osini stressed the importance of bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge acquired in academia and practical industry experience and called on YABATECH to bolster its efforts in creating opportunities for female engineers by ensuring they are well-prepared to meet the demands of the industry upon graduation.

    Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) has won the NANS Lagos Security Summit and Intercampus Debate which  held yesterday at the

    Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH), Ikorodu,Lagos.

    YABATECH students, Israel Ogundele and Isibor Anointed emerged victorious in the first position,while second position went to Chilaka Shedrach and Nwaeze Brendan of Saint Augustine College of Education(SACOED), and Saheed Sunday and Umar Sherifah of Lagos State University (LASU) placed third.

    The winners were rewarded with N300,000; SACOED students got N200,000, while LASU students took home N100,000.

    The convener,Chairman NANS Lagos, Comr. Alimi Lekan Idris,who congratulated the students, noted that they demonstrated exceptional intellectual capabilities and represented their institutions with great honour.

    He reiterated the commitment of NANS to fostering dialogue, collaboration, and innovation within tertiary institutions and the zeal to  continue to champion the interests of students across the state.

    He thànked the  Lagos State Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Hon. Tolani Sule, Vice Chancellor of Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH), Prof. OluMuyiwa Odusanya, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Student Union Affairs, Kappo Samuel and other stakeholders for their support towards the success of the event.

    “The  NANS Lagos Security Summit and Intercampus Debate was a remarkable success, made possible through the collaborative efforts of all involved. The event, which brought together representatives from various tertiary institutions across Lagos, was a platform for meaningful discussions and thought-provoking debates,” he added.

    YABATECH postpones resumption for students

    The Management of Yaba College of Technology has approved the postponement of the physical resumption of all new and returning students by two weeks.

    The college, however, said the online screening should continue ahead of physical resumption.

    A statement by Acting Registrar, Dr. Emmanuel Akinwale, said the physical screening will commence on May 13 in batches.

    According to him, students are required to print out their slips and appear on their scheduled dates indicated therein.

    He warned students and parents to be wary of scammers and ensure that they comply with instructions disseminated on the college portal.

    “All students and parents should also discountenance rumors on fees circulated on social media as the College will announce authorized fees on the College portal,” Akinwale stated.
