  • YABATECH projects more than being varsity, says rector

YABATECH projects more than being varsity, says rector

The Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) has said its investment in research and vocational education is part of efforts in attaining the projection of becoming greater than other institutions of higher learning.

Its Rector, Dr. Ibraheem Abdul, stated this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

According to him, the investment also captures bringing more grants to the institution.

Abdul, who described YABATECH as Nigeria’s first educational institution founded in 1947, said it had been ranked the number one polytechnic for six years.

He added that the target was to become the number one tertiary institution in the country.

“This initiative was part of the vision when I came into office, to empower our staff, repackaging our programmes and the idea is to take YABATECH beyond the number one polytechnic.

“We are what we are; forget about what we are called.

“Our projection is to become more than a university and that is what we are focused on doing.

“We have invested in vocational education, research and in bringing more grants to the college. So, by the time we are done, let’s see what they will call us.

“Away from being the first institution in age, we want to be the first.

“There are other institutions in the world that are not named or called university but they are proud of what they represent, so whether we are called a university or not, we are still focused,” he added.

The rector said the college had concluded a four-day free eye screening and cataract surgery for Lagos residents.

He stated that the initiative was a way of giving back to the society.

Abdul noted that no fewer than 400 persons had benefited from the programme, adding that over 300 persons had cataract surgery in Gbagada General Hospital, while others were given glasses, lenses and medications.

“One of the most important responsibilities of tertiary institution is community relation, so we organised the programme, in collaboration with others, to carry out the free eye screening and cataract surgery for residents.

“The ability to see is a precious gift that millions of people around the world took for granted.

“A simple eye condition can lead to significant vision impairment or even blindness, hence the idea behind the initiative,” he told NAN.

The programme was in collaboration with Yaba Local Council Development Area (Yaba LCDA), Lagos State Ministry of Health, Albasaar International Foundation and Ambassador International Limited, a non-governmental organisation.

  • Don urges YABATECH to sustain internet revolution lead

Chief Lecturer in the Department of Computer Technology, Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH), Dr Ajibike Olubunmi Itegboje, has urged the management to consolidate on the gains it made leading the internet revolution in Nigeria.

Delivering the 11th Inaugural Lecture of the college penultimate week, Dr Itegboje said YABATECH and the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife played key roles in breaking the country into the committee of internet nations in 1993 through research activities, training and establishment of the Nigeria Internet Group (NIG).

She said from the little beginning of 0.1 per cent penetration in 2000 Nigeria’s use of the internet grew to 46.1 per cent in 2016 – with YABATECH also expanding access from 1Mbps (megabytes per second) in 1997 to the current provision of 155 Mps fixed internet bandwidth.

To consolidate on these, Dr Itegboje advised the college management, led by the Rector, Obafemi Omokungbe, an engineer, to collaborate with institutions that can make wireless internet connection a reality in the college.

“Management is advised to look critically into forging more collaborations either with individuals or corporate bodies for the fast development of the college.  On this note, the Google one billion connect project should be vigorously pursued.  It will provide the benefit of free WIFI in densely populated areas of the college such as the student hostels,” she said.

Dr Itegboje also spoke of using the internet to provide online education for many qualified candidates denied admission into the college due to space constraint.   She said the institution should seek ways to use its ICT infrastructure and internet connection for teaching and learning and devise ways of rewarding lecturers that integrate ICT into the learning process.

“There is therefore a need to maximise the expenditure on the ICT infrastructure in the college by using it for teaching engagements in the Yaba and Epe campuses as well as floating online diploma and certificate courses. This will drastically improve the Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) while positioning the college as an institution, performing a social responsibility of educating more people,” she said.

In his remarks after the lecture, the Rector praised Itegboje for the lecture, which he described as wonderful and thought-provoking. He promised to study her recommendations, some of which he said were already in the college’s master plan.

He promised to sustain the inaugural lecture series which he resuscitated when he assumed duty as rector last year.

Highlight of the lecture was the presentation of a plaque to the lecturer by the Rector as well as a life-size stature by her former students.

  • YABATECH opens water factory

Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) has inaugurated a water factory to boost its internally generated revenue (IGR) and provide potable water for its community.

Its Governing Council Chairman Prince Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), who spoke at the event, said it was one of his happiest moments.

He praised the Rector, Obafemi Omokungbe, for his resilience and ability to undertake thought provoking projects, describing him as a silent achiever.

“I am happy that the dream of establishing this water factory has come to pass. Therefore, I want to congratulate everybody that contributed to the project. I want to recommend this water for everybody, and encourage us to advertise this water, because no matter how good your product is if you don’t advertise it nobody will do it for you. I want to advise that all the materials that will be needed for the production of the water should be sourced from within, including the labeling, so that the money is retained here, nothing should go outside,” he said.

Omokungbe remarked that he was happy because YABATECH water was another landmark achievement, adding that it was one of the uncompleted projects he inherited when he assumed office in March 2018.

“The project particularly caught my attention; the reason being that water is a fundamental human need. Clean and safe water is required for healthy living and as a responsible institution; we are concerned with the wellbeing of our staff and students.

“The college revenue is very poor, and it has become quite challenging to meet up with the maintenance of the existing facilities and provision of infrastructure. It, therefore, became necessary for the college to urgently improve its internally generated revenue to be able to meet its obligations, since the fund from government has become inadequate. It was on this basis that the YABATECH Consult was mandated to ensure the completion of this project within the shortest possible time,” he said.

Omokungbe, an engineer, said YABATECH water had the nod of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administrative Control (NAFDAC) and would soon be the only packaged water sold on Campus.

Yabatech Consult Director, Iyang Udoh, while welcoming guests, said the YABATECH premium table water and sachet water would be produced with state-of-the-art equipment, including reverse osmosis, ozonator and superior micron filters. When fully operational he said the factory would produce about 31,000 sachets of water (50cl) and 10,000 bottled water (75cl and, or 50cl) per day.

According to Udoh, the factory has equipment to produce 66 big ice blocks per day with a cold room for storage.

He thanked all members of the college instrumental to the factory’s success, including a student, who designed the water’s labels. “I must also appreciate one of our students of the Graphic Design Department, Mr. Moshood Ogunsanya, who designed the labels for our bottle and sachet water without making any demand, though arrangement is being made to pay him honorarium

  • YABATECH gets N23m direct imaging machine

The School of Art, Design and Printing, Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH), Lagos is now home to the Canon 850 Digital Imaging Machine, courtesy of office-multifunction device manufacturer, Canon Inc.

The firm handed over the N23million equipment at a brief ceremony held at the School of Art, Design and Printing of YABATECH on Monday, following which 65 staff members and students were trained in colour management while using the machine.

Canon’s Market Intelligence Manager, Europe Middle East and Africa (EMEA), Matt Kelly, said the initiative was done under the firm’s Miraisha project, a programme implemented to update the skills of young people in Africa. He expressed hope that through the use of the machine, the college is able to equip its students with the latest skills in printing technology.

He said: “We called it the Miraisha project. Mirasha, is composed to two words MIRA for future and ISHA for livelihood. We are looking, using Canon core imaging skills and know-how to help people to develop future livelihood to cross the market in which we operate.

“We are looking to help professional printers and especially students. We looking to use Canon know how and its technology in order to develop their own skills.  These are skills that they will learn and use in their future jobs and it will help them gain an advantage in the market place.”

The training was facilitated by two experts brought in by Canon

Dean, School of Art, Design and Printing, Dr Kunle Adeyemi, said the participants for the training were drawn from various departments and units of the school that do work  with printing.

He said the machine, which he attracted to YABATECH after meeting a CANON representative at an event, was the first of its kind in the country.

“The machine is a digital direct image machine. We call it 850 series and it is the first one in the country. When printing on it, you do not need to go through the stress of having the original to plate from plate to film from film to plate etc now you can actually move on the system, do your design, do your origination on the system, pass it on to the machine, the machine will do all the needful and move it straight to printing and finishing,” he said.

The YABATECH Rector, Mr Femi Omokungbe, an engineer, expressed hope that the machine would serve not only as a tool to train students but as a means to generate revenue for the college.  He said the decision to do some printing jobs in-house by the Printing Department saved the institution up to N30 million last session.

“In 2017/2018 Session, the Printing Department was commissioned to print examination materials and by this singular act, the College was able to save over thirty million naira.  The Printing Department has since been opened for commercial purpose,” he said.

Omokungbe promised that the college would take good care of the machine.

“We will also like to inform you that there will be proper maintenance of the machine while students and staff will not be denied access to it.  We will also fulfil our own part of the memorandum of understanding between the College and CANON,” he said.

Roman Troedthandl, Managing Director, Canon Central and North Africa, said two more training sessions would take place later this year and next before the three-year partnership between the firm and YABATECH runs out.

“Indeed, the training workshop will offer unparalleled prospects for graduates to broaden their horizons and take advantage of employment opportunities that support this remarkable population growth, “ he said.

“As the Chairman of your School Board be open minded and treat each case on its merit. Be transparent and show respect for all shades of opinion. The ultimate, however, is for you to always play by the extant rules and regulations. Deans of School must take their place in the scheme of things and be held accountable for the activities of their staff and students. Therefore, this inauguration is not a welcome party but a solemn occasion to bring home publicly the enormity of the responsibilities of the office of the Deans. I wish you the strength, guidance and wisdom to cope with the demand of this office,” he said.
