  • We must resolve North East humanitarian crises, says Osinbajo

The Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo on Monday said the country could not wait for another generation of leaders to resolve the humanitarian crises in the North East.

He said this while receiving a delegation from Borno which came to thank President Muhammadu Buhari for the recent release of 82 Chibok girls from the Boko Haram captivity.

According to him, it is this generation of leaders who must do what it takes to resolve most of the issues that face the country in the North East.

Osinbajo said that the Federal Government would re-strategise with all the agencies involved in the rehabilitation of victims of insurgency in order to address their most urgent problems.

“Perhaps it might be wise for us to take a look first about how to save the children and to save peoples’ lives and then begin to address questions of infrastructure as we go along.

“But I think it is important that people don’t die while we are thinking, people don’t die while we are planning to ensure that we are able to provide for them.

“So what I will suggest is that we take some time out to look at this, the Borno State government, the Federal Government, and then of cause the PCNI, PINE and all the other government initiatives that are working out there.

“And then plan things better, outline what is priority and then determine what it will cost us and then we can work from there.

“But I think it is important that we take a second look at what we have organized so far so that we will be able to do something more.’’

Osinbajo said that the crises in the North East had grown deeper but noted that it was gratifying that more people were freed from captivity by the armed forces and international partners.

He said the government must determine what needed to be done and do everything that it would take to hold the officials to account for the lives of the children and vulnerable people.

“That in my view is the whole point about leadership, otherwise I don’t see how we can justify our leadership in any other way,’’ he said.

The Acting President acknowledged that a lot of what happened in the release of the Chibok girls were largely because the international community and development partners believed in the integrity of Buhari.

He said the partners “recognize his genuineness, forthrightness and felt the need to help,’’ adding that they did not have to wonder if there was any other thing else going on.

“We are thankful for that kind of leadership that has showed so much integrity.’’

Osinbajo observed that so many people made sacrifices in the course of insurgency, especially in Borno, and said the disaster in the region was unimaginable.

He said the administration did not know how long it would take to restore all that were lost in physical infrastructure not to talk about the lost lives.

Osinbajo said that Buhari noted that the arrival of the 82 girls to the Villa had boosted his health.

He said Nigerians should rejoice that the release of the girls had taken place and expressed optimism that the remaining girls and others in captivity would regain their freedom.

Borno Gov. Kashim Shetima, who led the delegation, said the state was surprised in October 2016 with the release of 21 Borno daughters by the Buhari administration.

He added that the record-breaking negotiation also secured the release of another 82 female students.

Shetima said that his state was in the Villa to thank Buhari, his team, the armed forces, the Swiss government and the International Red Cross committee for the feat.

The governor whose wife, Nana, was also at the event attributed the feat to the integrity of the President.

He said the President inherited a battered economy and that with his determination the country would attain greatness again.

He thanked the parents of the girls for their patience waiting for the girls and urged parents whose girls had yet to return to remain hopeful and prayerful for God to turn the situation around.

The Chairman Governors Forum, Gov. Abdulaziz Yari of Zamfara , commended the efforts of the President and Vice President for the release of the Chibok girls.

He also thanked God for His intervention and expressed the hope that more captives would return and that insurgency in the North East would be routed out.

The former Senate Leader, Ali Ndume, noted the personal interest shown by Osinbajo in the plight of the people of the North East.

He said that the humanitarian crises in the region were beyond anyone’s imagination in spite of the efforts made by the international community.

The Senator noted that the budget of Borno could not take care of the problems, adding that the budget of N45 billion for the PCNI was grossly inadequate and urged the federal government to boost the allocation.

The Minister of Women Affairs, Aisha Alhassan said that all the released girls were in good shape and thanked the Acting President for being thorough in the identification of the girls.

She also thanked the Borno governor and the UN system for their special interest in the rehabilitation of the released school girls.

  • Expectations for the week

    Expectations for the week

Many Nigerians who slept early yesterday evening must just be finding the news of the departure of President Buhari shocking this morning. The Nigerian President has gone on medical leave and has handed over power to the Vice – President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo. After a few weeks of not appearing in public, many Nigerians felt concern for their President’s health, his absence at Federal Executive Council meetings further fueled suspicions that all was not well with him.

Last Friday, he appeared in mosque for the Jumaat prayers but he still wasn’t looking too good. Now that he’s gone abroad for further treatment, people are glad that the President will get the best medical attention and the country will still be in capable hands.

Nigerians are hopeful that the country will experience positive changes under Acting President Yemi Osinbajo just like the last time President Buhari went on medical leave in London.

Yesterday, 82 Chibok girls abducted by Boko haram were swapped by the Federal Government for some commanders of the sect. This cheering news has brought smiles to the faces of many Nigerians who have been concerned about the whereabout of the girls.

Just before his departure for London, President Buhari addressed the girls in Aso Rock. Of course, there has been many questions asked which includes – Why did the Nigerian government have to negotiate with a terrorist organization? Why did it take so long before these girls were released? When will the remaining girls be released?

Anyway, we cannot but give kudos to the Federal Government for rescuing these girls. Their friends and family members must be highly delighted to have them back; hopefully, the other captured girls will be brought back safe and sound.

The National Assembly has proclaimed that the 2017 budget will be ready this week; in fact, it will be ready by Tuesday, 9th May 2017. Members of the Senate have assured Nigerians that the budget will be ready tomorrow. Already, the budget is behind schedule and should have been in operation by now. However, it remains to be seen if the budget will be passed tomorrow as promised or not.

Last week, many Nigerians received with delight the news by Musician cum actor, Bankole Wellignton and actress, Adesua Etomi that they were going to get married. Both celebrities took to their Instagram accounts to announce their love story to the world, they both gave a history of their story and this received pleasant goodwill messages from fellow celebrities and many Nigerians.

Last Saturday, Bankole and Adesua had their introduction ceremony and many celebrity friends of the couple were in attendance. From this corner, we are wishing them a happy married life and we are praying they keep the status despite the many challenges that may be faced.

Osinbajo scores Nigerian ‘Jollof rice’ high

Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, Nigeria’s Vice-President on Monday described Nigerian-cooked jollof rice as “the best in the world”.

The New Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that recently, while responding to a question by Richard Quest, CNN International business editor, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, Minister of Information and Culture, was quoted to have said that the Senegalese make the best jollof rice on the continent.

Although Quest made attempt to defend the minister, saying the minister did not hear his answer correctly, the incident sparked off unpleasant reactions on social media among a cross-section of Nigerians.

The Vice-President gave the score card while speaking at “The Platform Nigeria,” a Global Media live broadcast LIVE on Channels TV and online convened by Poju Oyemade, Senior Pastor of the Covenant Christian Centre, in Lagos.

He said:“And by the way, we all know that Nigerian jollof rice is the best, we beat the Ghanaians and the Senegalese hands down.”

“We have everything, and our people are doing incredibly innovative things.

“Our music and entertainment industry is the fastest growing in the world, and of course, nobody is as funny as Nigerians, whether professional or amateur,” he noted.

The VP also extolled Nigerians innovative feats in various fields, especially in recent times.

“Last year Oluyinka Olutoye, a Nigerian surgeon successfully took out a baby from her mother’s womb, operated on the womb, and put the baby back in.

“The baby was carried full term and was born naturally – a feat previously unheard of.

“Only last year, a Nigerian girl Morolake Akinosun won a gold medal at the Olympics.

“Last Saturday, a Nigerian boxer Anthony Oluwafemi Joshua won the WBA, becoming the boxing champion of the world.”

Jollof rice is a staple meal among Africans, however over the years, Nigerians, Ghanaians, Senegalese and other African countries have claimed to make the best of the meal.

  • MSMEs clinics: we are on track to impact 360,000 MSMEs yearly – Presidency

MSMEs clinics: we are on track to impact 360,000 MSMEs yearly – Presidency

Mr Tola Johnson, the Special Advicer to Vice President Osinbajo on Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) says the Federal Government’s goal to empower 360,000 MSMEs annually is on course.

Johnson, a member of the recently inaugurated 22-member council for Nigeria’s MSMEs sector said this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Sunday.

According to him, the empowerment process is being done through the MSMEs clinics.

The MSMEs clinics is an initiative of the Presidency, aimed at addressing grassroots problems of MSMES across Nigeria.

Vice President Osibanjo had inaugurated the programme in January in Aba, which was home to many local manufacturers in the country.

“The target of the MSMEs clinics is to try and affect positively, the lives of 360,000 MSMEs in a year. People keep saying it is a very tall order, but it is achievable.

“So far, we have only gone to three states and we have successfully engaged with 4,602 MSMEs and we haven’t even touched Lagos, Port Harcourt, and Kano.

“In May, I’m sure the number will double significantly because we are going to five states.’’

Johnson said that the Federal Government was presently working toward reopening at least six industrial development parks in the country, one for every region.

“The government has about 23 industrial parks, only about two or three of them are working, the others are moribund.

“We have gone to inspect the one in Abuja for a start, and look at a few around the country, to see how we can either through Public Private Partnership or whichever way the government decides to quickly reactivate at least six.

“We plan to have SMES access them, because what this does for them is that it will help solve many of their business problems.

“When they co-exist in a shared facility, once NAFDAC regulates and confirms that this shared facility meets the standard, you have made the standard, she has made the standard, and he has made the standard.

“Also, these clusters of 50 to 200 businesses won’t likely be asked for collateral. Your access to loan will be easier and you will not be as risky as you were before.

“So, the industrial development parks will de-risk the sector in those aspects,” he said.

Johnson said that from the 4,602 MSMEs they had interacted with so far, contrary to common belief, access to finance was not the main bottleneck of MSMEs in the country.

For instance, he said many of them do not know how to put up a profit and loss account, which hinders effective management of funds.

He said first of all, owners of MSMEs in the country were in dire need of capacity building then access to the right kind of financing facility.

“This is why you have businesses that open in January and shutdown in December. So many of them need capacity building then access to finance.

“Access to finance has to be in the right structure to be of benefit to MSMEs, because if you want a loan you can go to any commercial bank and get it at 25 to 30 per cent.

“However, access to finance for at least five years tenure, single digit is the right structure for these businesses and the government is already working to address this with the newly established Development Bank of Nigeria.

“The core function of the DBN is to address the bottlenecks in the MSMEs sector.

“It intends to clean it up, make it more attractive and serve as wholesale banker to commercial banks, Microfinance banks so they can lend to the MSMEs at a good rate and longer tenure.’’

Johnson said that through the MSMEs clinics, other challenges faced by the businesses were being addressed on the spot, from difficulties getting NAFDAC number, adequate electricity and tax clearance, among others.

“I can tell you that at least, hundreds of NAFDAC numbers have been collected since we started the clinics.

“For NAFDAC, when the clinics started, the first thing they did was to reduce MSMEs product registration by 50 per cent.

“Bank of Industry (BoI) also decided that the MSMEs fund they had inaugurated about two years ago, which wasn’t doing particularly well, they said `you know what, lets re-launch this fund this year in line with the MSMEs clinics.

“We told them you cannot use universal criteria to judge the MSMEs. So try and reduce some of the criteria.

“If you have your documentation right, if you need between one and N10 million credit facility, you don’t need collateral. Just get two solid guarantors. So once this is achieved, it will be a step forward,” he said.

When asked if the government may consider granting tax breaks to MSMEs as encouragement, Johnson said the government was looking at every option that could make their lives easier and better.

“From the Federal Inland Revenue Service, to the Vice President, they are looking at so many options, to give MSMEs breathing space to strive and expand,’’ he said.

NAN reports that other members of the council include the Ministers of Finance, Trade and Investment, Budget and National Planning, Agriculture, Power, Works and Housing, Central Bank Governor, and President Manufacturers Association of Nigeria.
