  • Law teachers to partner FG on security challenges

The Nigerian Association of Law Teachers (NALT) has said that it would assist the Federal Government to solve the country’s security challenges.

NALT National President, Prof. Godwin Okeke, said this on Tuesday after meeting with Vice President Yemi Osinbajo at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Okeke, who is Dean, Faculty of Law at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, said the association would use its 2017 Annual Conference slated for June to address the challenges of security and national development.

He said NALT would give expert opinions on how the nation would move forward in spite of the security challenges and still sustain the accomplished developmental strides.

“We want to bring in our expertise, as Law teachers, in trying to find solutions to the problems of security that have besieged the nation over some years or a period of time now.

“We want to actually use the forum or medium to brainstorm on ways of ensuring that lives and property are secured in Nigeria.

“And also that we are going to really have a sustainable kind of security policy as far as Nigeria and the administration of the nation is concerned.’’

Okeke acknowledged that the legal profession was also facing some challenges such as funding and dearth of law teachers.

Osinbajo urges envoys to treat Nigerians with respect, dignity

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has urged non-career ambassadors-designates to treat all who visit Nigerian embassies, especially the citizens, with respect and dignity.

Osinbajo said government would remove the hindrance to effective service delivery at the embassies across the globe.

According to him, “More importantly, that we also recognise that everyone who comes to the embassies and even Nigerians in particular are persons who need to be served with respect.

“That they need to be treated with dignity; they need to be treated with the kind of respect that people should ordinarily expect from those who say that they are serving them.

“I think that it will be very important that all of those who come to our embassies feel that they are respected and that they are treated properly whenever they choose to.

“The government will work very hard to ensure that we put in place all that is required.

“We know that there are several challenges.

“I am sure that most of us are familiar with so many of the challenges; challenges with salaries and challenges with some of the facilities.’’

Osinbajo said that complaints from Nigerian embassies related to citizens not being served well, being treated shabbily and lack of facilities.

The Vice president gave assurance that the problems were being looked at and a lot would be done ahead of the resumption of the ambassadors-designate.

Osinbajo also urged the envoys to make personal efforts to familiarise themselves with the policies and programmes of government in order to deliver.

He reminded them of the three cardinal policies of the administration on the economy, security and anti-corruption.

He requested the envoys to regard themselves as privileged and being given the honour to represent the country.

“We are not short of great ideas, but getting things done remains the issue,’’ he said and urged the envoys to change the scenario.

Osinbajo said corruption was a major concern in the country but added that there must be a consensus to say that corruption would not be tolerated any more.

He also said that there was hope for a turnaround of the nation’s economy.

“I want to say that there is great hope for a turnaround of our economy and that the turnaround is definitely in sight.

“The most important thing is to ensure that we do those things that we promised to do and we are determined to do those things.

“We have the capacity to do those things; we have the presence of mind to do them and we will.

“The most important of course is diversifying our economy to ensure that we are able to produce the various things that we consume,’’ he said.

Osinbajo also explained that the ease of doing business programme of the administration was crucial in the efforts to attract foreign investments.

He said that the envoys had major roles to play in how people should perceive the country as an investment destination.

  • Expectations For The Week

    Expectations For The Week

As we enter into another week, one wonders if the 2017 budget will be worked on by the Senate. Last week, the Senate President, Bukola Saraki said on the floor of the Senate that various committees are yet to submit their reports. With eight months left in the year, there is a high possibility that the budget will not be properly implemented – this is risky for the economic health of the country .

The battle for supremacy between the Senate and the Presidency seems like a never-ending saga, however, a peace committee has been set up which is to be headed by Vice – President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo. The committee which has current ministers who were ex-senators as members will seek to settle the sudden “supremacy battle” currently hindering the smooth running of governance between the executive and legislative arms of the country.

Recently, the Senate decided not to screen the 27 nominees for Resident Electoral Commission (REC) sent by the President until their recommendation of replacing Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibrahim Magu is adhered to. Magu, was rejected by the Senate for the second time despite re-nomination by President Muhammadu Buhari. Will the President’s proposed closed-door meeting with Saraki end the macabre dance in the senate?

Also, the current suspension of Senator Ali Ndume for six months by the senate is said to be generating heat as some “stakeholders” are trying to settle the current case between the Borno Senator and the “super powers” in the red chamber. Ndume was suspended  for bringing the name of the Senate into disrepute after calling for the investigation of the Senate President, Bukola Saraki and Senator Dino Melaye. Melaye was investigated after a certain online publication said he didn’t graduate from Ahmadu Bello University, a claim the Vice Chancellor of the institution has refuted. Saraki’s issue had to do with the importation of an SUV without paying customs duties; however, the ex-Governor has said the Senate (and not himself) was responsible for the importation.

The current health crisis ravaging the country in recent times needs to be STOPPED. Meningitis, which is an inflammation of the lining of the brain and spinal cord causes several neausating and incommodious effects on it victim – skin rashes, seizures, vomiting, fever, bodily temperature, increased sensitivity to light, confusion, tightness in the neck muscles etc. It has claimed over three hundred lives and there seems not to be a solution to it. The minister of health, Prof. Isaac Adewole has assured Nigerians that the Federal Ministry of Health under his purview would nip the outbreak of meningitis ravaging some states in the bud. He said his ministry is “in constant discussion with the World Health Organization (WHO), UNICEF, E- health Africa and other international health agencies of supplies  of vaccines and injections”. With so many deaths already, the minister has to know that the time to act is NOW.

As the Big Brother Naija enters into the final week, the excitement across the country from fans of the entertaining show is gradually getting to the peak. Just yesterday, Bally got evicted after getting nominated for eviction alongside Tboss, DebbieRise and Marvis. As it stands, Efe remains the only male standing in the house with four women (Tboss, DebbieRise, Bisola and Marvis) to contend with…A VERY LUCKY MAN! With over 11 million votes announced by show host Ebuka Uchendu for just yesterday’s eviction, the show organizers will be smiling to the bank after it ends at the weekend. After another week of performing various tasks, the housemate with the highest number of votes gotten by the viewers WINS in six days’ time.

The excitement in the Nigerian Professional Football League has continued to draw more attention after the unpredictable nature of the league continued yesterday. Before round 18 games, MFM fc was sitting atop the log but after a 4-0 drubbing at Lafia and victories for both El-Knemi and Plateau United, the former climbs to second while the latter now lead the league and Mfm are presently third.  Without doubt, El-Kanemi’s next weekend encounter with Mfm fc at the Agege Stadium will be the match to watch; both teams have the same points (30 points) and are only separated by goal difference.

  • FG to include Illegal refiners in proposed modular refineries

FG to include Illegal refiners in proposed modular refineries

Local “illegal” refiners in the oil-producing communities maybe co-opted as shareholders in the Federal Government’s proposed modular refineries, a presidency source has disclosed.

The source who preferred to remain anonymous said the Presidency and the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Agency (NSIA) are collaborating to realize the plan, in fulfilment  of promises made by  Vice-President Yemi  Osinbajo  during  his tour of the oil region, on behalf of President Muhammadu Buhari.

The core of the plan is to integrate the illegal refiners, rather than a scorched-earth policy that seeks to eliminate the operations of such refiners.

The source however explained that there were a number of significant hurdles to be crossed especially issues around the engineering and technical ramifications of such a conversion, besides figuring out the financial models that would be workable and profitable.

“At a meeting late last week at the Presidential Villa, issues around technical and engineering implications of how to integrate the refiners were discussed with industry experts and practitioners making presentations on how to implement the Buhari presidency modular refinery initiative said to have been first proposed by Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources.

“At the meeting the experts reported that they have worked closely with the NNPC, Oil & Gas operators, owners of marginal fields, operators of refineries and various technical services providers “to develop a workable system to develop this initiative,’’ the source further disclosed.

A modular refinery is a refinery made up of smaller and mobile parts-(skid-mounted)-that are more easily fabricated and can be more quickly transported to site. They come in different sizes with varying capacities normally lower capacity than conventional refineries with more elaborate and complex  set-up.

“Under the plan being considered in the presidency, the Federal Government could supply crude to the local refineries at a reasonably considered price, as an incentive to stop the current practice whereby the illegal refiners vandalise and steal the crude.

The source maintained that the new concept, when operational, would also prevent the environment degradation that the spills and damaged trunk lines have been causing.

He said, the marginal field operators could also supply crude to the new modular refineries that would have the illegal refiners integrated.

“Another important component of the plan under consideration is to involve the current illegal refiners and their communities as shareholders while the NDDC and the NSIA will also hold substantial holdings/equity sufficient to make the smaller refineries operational as a business and a going concern.

“To facilitate effective community engagements, an MOU would be established under the plan with the affected communities determining the communities share, while the FG would supervise the implementation, which would be driven largely by industry operators and the communities,” the source added.

When contacted, Mr Laolu Akande, Senior Special Assistant to the President, Media & Publicity, Office of the Vice President, confirmed that a meeting was held last week on the issue adding that “the Buhari presidency is actively working on all fronts to speedily deliver on its promise of a ‘new vision,’ in the Niger Delta”.

Saraki reads Buhari’s letter on resumption of duty

The President of the Senate, Dr Bukola Saraki, on Tuesday, read President Muhammadu Buhari’s letter of resumption of duty.

The president wrote: “in compliance with Section 145 of the Constitution, I write to intimate the senate that I have resumed my functions as President of Nigeria with effect from Monday, March 13, after my vacation.

“Please accept Distinguished Senate President, the assurances of my highest considerations.”

Buhari had proceeded on medical vacation to the UK on Jan. 19 and wrote to the Senate that he would take 10 days as part of his annual leave.

He said that the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, would act on his behalf as President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The president later wrote asking for an extension of the vacation to enable him to undergo more medical tests.

The president returned on Friday, March 10 and has since received briefing from the vice-president.

  • Osinbajo briefs Buhari, says ‘I’m back to my position as Vice-President’

Osinbajo briefs Buhari, says ‘I’m back to my position as Vice-President’

Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo on Monday briefed President Muhammadu Buhari on some of his activities as acting president while the president was away in London.

Osinbajo who made this known after a closed door meeting with the president in Abuja, said “I’m back to my regular position as Vice-President.”

He said that the president, who was updated on national and international issues as they concerned the country, gave specific directives on the next steps to be taken.

“We just had a very long meeting. As you can see we were basically trying to bring the President up to speed on some of the things we have done while he was away‎.

“He has given a few directives on what we should be doing on so many areas, the Northeast, budget, the economy, a wide range of issues,” he said.

On the readiness of the president to resume work, the vice-president said he had already handed over the governance of the nation to the president.

“He’s held a meeting with me for well over an hour now where we discussed a wide range of issues.

“So, his readiness for work isn’t in doubt at all. As a matter of fact I think he is over ready.

“Oh yes! I’m back to my regular position as vice president,” Osinbajo said.

On whether the president was impressed with his performance as acting president, Osinbajo said President Buhari “was reasonable satisfied”.

Osinbajo dismissed the assertion that there might be a lot of delegation of duties to him, due to the health of the president.

According to him, nothing will be done without the president’s clearance.

He said: “I think the president, as you know, has always given me several responsibilities.

“I think what we must recognise is that the way this administration work is that it has always been team work.

“Very little is done without the president’s clearance.

“Generally speaking, even with responsibilities that are my constitutional responsibilities, we have full discussions on them, we have full agreements on all of those issues.’’

  • We must do more to educate our children – Buhari

We must do more to educate our children – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has called for more concerted efforts in ensuring that all Nigerian children get good education in order to be relevant in a world driven by new technology.

Mr Femi Adesina, the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the President, on his Facebook page, said Buhari stated this while speaking to some governors, members of the Federal Executive Council, service chiefs and senior government officials in Abuja.

Adesina stated that Buhari was speaking after his return from London.

Buhari said the world was fast changing, and more efforts must be made to equip the younger generation with relevant skills to compete in the global economy.

‘‘My single advice is that we must take education seriously, and we must do much more to educate our children,’’ he said.

Buhari noted that the government would continue to discourage Nigerians from self-medication, urging those with discomforts to ensure they get proper diagnosis and doctor’s prescription for drugs.

He lauded the quality of treatment he got during his medical vacation.

The president said he had been conscious of the challenges faced in repositioning the economy of the country, noting that it would receive more attention.

Buhari said he was pleased with the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, who provided good leadership during his stay in London for medical attention.

The president said he had planned to take a vacation in January, 2017, after asking the Vice President to take a holiday in December, 2016.

Buhari pointed out that the team spirit with the vice president would be further strengthened in tackling the myriad challenges in the economy.

  • FG pledges to work directly with oil producing communities

The Special Adviser to the President on Niger Delta Affairs, Brig.-Gen. Paul Boroh, says the Federal Government will henceforth work directly with the oil producing communities in the region.

Boroh, who is also the Coordinator Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP), said this in an interview in Abuja on Tuesday.

He said the Federal Government would involve the youths and stakeholders in the development of their communities.

The presidential aide said the President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration is committed to finding a lasting solution to the unrest, instability and underdevelopment of the region.

According to him, the Federal Government is proposing a new vision that focuses on technological advancement and innovation in improving the value of oil produced in the region.

The coordinator said Acting President Yemi Osinbajo’s visit to Benin and tour of the region will go a long way to win the confidence of the youths and the leaders.

He explained that the tour is also a fact finding mission on issues affecting the region.

He said the visit was also to fulfill the Buhari’s administration earlier promised of ensuring the genuinely development.

“People finally can see this government face to face and discuss their problems and their perceptions are finally changing for the better.

“The pipeline bombing and other violent threats have almost disappeared in the region.

“Before now there were no forum to meet and no opportunity for interaction and exchange of ideas by opinion leaders,” he said.

Boroh explained that with the interaction there was better understanding of the challenges of government in tackling the Niger Delta problems.

He said the tour had provided an opportunity to reassess the journey so far and the way forward.

Osinbajo’s visit: Obaseki apologizes to Edo people over gridlock

Gov. Godwin Obaseki has apologised to people of the state, especially those in Benin metropolis, for the traffic difficulties experienced during Acting President Yemi Osinbajo’s visit on Monday.

In a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. John Mayaki, on Tuesday, Obaseki regretted the inconveniences people went through during the visit and assured such situation would be better managed in future.

It can be recalled that Osinbajo was in Edo in continuation of his visit to the Niger Delta for dialogue with the people on the issues affecting the region.

In the state, the visit enabled him to interact with leaders of the oil-producing communities on how to resolve the persistent crisis in the area arising from oil activities.

“I apologize to everyone in the state, especially those in the Benin Metropolis, for the difficulties experienced in mobility.

“The torrential downpour also worsened the situation. I want to assure you that the situation will be managed more effectively next time.

“I want to thank the Acting President, Prof. Osinbajo, for the visit and for rubbing minds with the good people of the state on how best to develop its oil-producing communities.

“The people of Edo have no doubt that you mean well for the state and the entire Niger Delta region.

“Be rest assured, Professor, that the government and people of Edo will support you, and may your strength never fade.

“To the people of Edo, I also say thank you for successfully hosting the Acting President in the state warmly,” he said.
