Gunmen abduct two councillors, one Imam in Zamfara community

The Police Command in  Zamfara  State has confirmed that suspected gunmen abducted two councillors and an Imam in Tsauni community, Gusau, on Wednesday night.

The command’s Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Deputy Superintendent of Police Yazid Abubakar confirmed the incident to reporters via telephone .

He said the councillors, representing Gidan Gona and Tsibiri wards in Maradun local government areas of Zamfara and Imam were taken away by the bandits.

According to him, the victims were abducted in front of their houses in the Tsauni area about 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday,  shortly after prayers. The News of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Tsauni community is located behind the Federal Road Safety, Zamfara Sector Command headquarters in Gusau.

Abubakar, however, said the command had deployed its men to the area and efforts were ongoing to rescue the victims.

The PPRO urged the residents to assist the police with relevant information in good time to curtail  such incidents.

Chairman, Maradun Local Government, Sanusi Gamagiwa, corroborated the PPRO’s information via telephone, adding that the suspected bandits had abducted six persons.

“They later released three persons and left with the two councillors and the Imam of the area.

    • Alake deploys rescue team

The Federal Government has confirmed the death of 13 of the 15 miners trapped in a mine pit collapse in Jabaka village, Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara State, last Thursday.

The confirmation was contained in a statement by the Special Assistant on Media to the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Segun Tomori, in Abuja yesterday.

The Minister, Dr. Dele Alake, has directed the deployment of Federal Mines officers to lead the rescue, in collaboration with state officials.

At the time of filing the report, two trapped persons were yet to be recovered.

Bemoaning the incident, the Minister was quoted to have described the tragedy as avoidable and unfortunate, stressing that the site will be sealed off once recovery efforts are concluded.

“I received with deep shock the report of the unfortunate incident in Zamfara, which has unfortunately resulted in some casualties. Our first responders have been mobilized to the site and are working with officials of the state government on rescue operations, after which the site will be sealed off,” he said.

Preliminary investigations indicated that the collapsed site, known for loose sandy soil and traces of gold, was being exploited by illegal miners using rudimentary tools, despite the environmental and safety risks inherent to the terrain.

It will be recalled that in a bid to tackle illegal mining, the Minister launched the mining marshals over a year ago. A development that led to the arrest of over 300 illegal miners across 10 states and the FCT and the sealing of 98 illegal mining sites across the country.

Zamfara nurses’ union rejects ‘No work, no Pay’ policy

The Zamfara State Council of the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) has dismissed the state government’s enforcement of the “No Work, No Pay” policy, describing it as intimidation.

State Chairman of NANNM, Comrade Shehu San Doki, said the union was not surprised by the directive, noting that such measures were expected amid the ongoing strike.

He maintained that nurses and midwives across the state would remain at home until the government takes what the union considers the “right actions.”

This came after the Zamfara State Hospital Services Management Board issued an internal memo instructing all heads of hospitals and health facilities to enforce the policy.

The memo mandated facility managers to open daily attendance registers for all categories of staff, with weekly reports to be submitted to the Office of the Executive Secretary for onward transmission to the government.

It further warned Medical Directors of General Hospitals and Heads of other facilities to ensure strict compliance, stressing that the government had resolved to fully implement the “No Work, No Pay” directive.

“When I saw that circular, I was not surprised because I knew such intimidation would come, but I want to assure the people of Zamfara and my members that such a threat will never stop us. We continue to monitor our people to ensure compliance with our warning strike. Doki said.

“I urged my members to be united and ensure that we executed the mandate of our last state executive meeting resolutions. We started yesterday, this is our first day, and we now have six days to go, still October 2, 2025.

The state chairman, Comrade Shehu Sani Doki, appreciated the doggedness of the members and urged them to continue to stay at home until the needful was done, and no amount of threat will demoralize them.

“We appreciate your commitment and tireless dedication to service despite poor, challenging, and unrewarding working conditions.

The Union further issued a circular against the state government’s internal memo, part of which read.

“This circular serves to address and counteract the internal memo, which is not only misleading and untimely but also unprofessional.

“It is perplexing that a government claiming to be on a rescue mission would impose unnecessary hardships on its law-abiding civil servants through threats of ‘no work, no pay.” Instead of fostering dialogue and seeking amicable resolutions, the government has chosen to intimidate those exercising their legitimate rights,” the circular read.

Doki commended Governor Dauda Lawal’s efforts to overhaul the state’s healthcare system but faulted the enforcement of the “no work, no pay” policy.

He attributed the move to individuals within the system who, according to him, “do not mean well for the administration.”

“Unfortunately, certain individuals appear to be sabotaging the governor’s efforts for their personal or political interests, as evidenced by the actions of the Hospital Services Management Board,” Doki said.

He stressed that embarking on a strike was a constitutional right, citing Section 34, which prohibits forced labour, and Section 40, which guarantees freedom of assembly and association. He further referenced the Trade Unions (Amendment) Act 2005, the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, and the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, all of which support workers’ rights to strike.

Expressing dismay at what he called the “unprofessional conduct” of the Hospital Services Management Board, Doki said, “They opted to use threats as a means of intimidation, but we remain committed to our professional responsibilities despite the challenging, poor, and under-remunerated working conditions.”

The union, he added, urged the government to resolve their grievances rather than resorting to “unprofessional threats,” insisting that no member should report to work or sign attendance during the strike. A supervisory committee, he noted, would ensure total compliance.

Meanwhile, the internal memo also disclosed that Governor Lawal has set up a Joint Technical Team, comprising government officials and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), to review the situation and chart a roadmap for an upward review of health workers’ salaries.

Confirming the development, State NLC Chairman, Comrade Sani Halliru Magajin Rafi, said the internal memo indeed originated from the Zamfara State Government.

Community members said the attack highlight the fragility of ongoing peace efforts as heavily armed groups continue to operate freely despite dialogue initiatives.

“The bandits have no unified command or control. You can negotiate with some groups in Katsina, while others continue to carry out attacks in Zamfara, Sokoto, Kebbi, and Kaduna,” a local source said

When contacted, member representing Tsafe West State Constituency Hon. Amiru Ahmed Keta confirmed the abduction and as well the killing of a District Head and one Alhaji in two villages.

Keta said the marauders attacked Gidan Turbe village under Yandoton Daji ward of Tsafe Local government and abducted ten worshippers but two of them managed to escape.

“It is true early morning today, the bandits attacked the villagers but they didn’t kill anybody in Turbe village  Despite that, they abducted ten people and confiscated multiple cell phones but two of the abductees escaped,” Keta said.

Speaking on the figure of the kidnapped victims, the lawmaker said: “Based on my enquiry, this is only what I gathered and that is only what comes to my notice and I can only give a testimony of what comes to my knowledge, even if the figure is more than that, I don’t know anything about it.”

He also confirmed another attack in Dogon Daji village under Keta/Kizara ward where the bandits killed the village head.

He said they also attacked Bawa ganga village and killed one Alhaji.

Keta further lamented the current horrible situation of Kucheri to Wanke road and how bandits turned it to their market.

“Until recently, the bandits were re blocking this road that connects Wanke to Kucheri daily, more especially, Keta to Danjibga and Keta to Kwaren ganuwa villages.

“They turned this road as their market, they almost slept there all the time. Even today people of my town Keta were denied access to Gusau and other cities to source for their means of livelihood,” he agonised.

The Zamfara Police command was yet to issue an official statement on the attacks.

When The Nation contacted Zamfara police spokesperson, Yazid Abubakar, he refused to pick calls.

Zamfara Governor Dauda Lawal has assured local entrepreneurs of constant support through grants and provision of an enabling environment.

He spoke while inaugurating the distribution of grants under the SABER (SERBS) programme at the JB Yakubu Secretariat, Gusau.

A statement by the Governor’s spokesperson, Sulaiman Bala Idris, explained the State Action on Business Enabling Reforms (SABER) Program represents a landmark in the state’s economic renewal.

The statement added that SABER is a five-year, performance-based, multi-sectoral initiative supported by the World Bank, carefully designed to dismantle barriers, stimulate private enterprise, and generate sustainable jobs for the people of Zamfara.

“N150,000 will be distributed to 2,000 beneficiaries across the state to support nano and micro businesses. Additionally, 1,000 individuals in small and medium-sized businesses will receive N500,000 each. Furthermore, 60 people from medium—and large-scale businesses will benefit from a grant of N5 million each,” the statement reads.

“We are gathered today to launch the program with the commencement of the disbursement of money to support various categories of businessmen and women throughout the state.

“There are three main categories of disbursements to be made. We have carefully reviewed relevant government institutions and the private sector, represented by the Chamber of Commerce leadership, to select beneficiaries in each support category,” the Governor stated.

Lawal further stressed that the SABER program, coordinated by the Ministry of Budget and Planning, is implemented by various MDAs, including the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, ZAGIS, and others like Finance, Agriculture, and Justice. “I am glad that His Excellency the governor is not paying lip service to developing small businesses in Nigeria. I was sitting there, hearing that 2,000 businesses will get N150,000. I think it is important that if a small business owner gets N150,000, he will employ one person,” Odii said.

The Coalition of Citizens Against Banditry and Insecurity in Nigeria (CABIN) has issued a seven-day ultimatum to Zamfara State governor, Dauda Lawal, urging him to take decisive action in addressing insecurity across the state.

In a statement on Wednesday signed by its president, Comrade Solomon Charles Abutu, the group said Governor Lawal’s recent remarks acknowledging awareness of the presence of criminal groups in Zamfara require immediate collaboration with security agencies to restore peace and stability.

CABIN noted that failure to act within the stipulated period would lead to mass protests and a call on the Federal Government to declare a state of emergency in Zamfara.

The organisation, which describes itself as a national coalition of civic advocates, security analysts, and community leaders, stressed that Zamfara has become one of the epicentres of Nigeria’s banditry crisis, with repeated cases of abductions and attacks on communities.

It further urged President Bola Tinubu to closely monitor developments in Zamfara, ensure adequate federal support, and hold state leadership accountable in the collective effort to strengthen national security.

Banditry: Zamfara group urges Governor Lawal to collaborate with security agencies

The Zamfara Good Governance Network (ZGGN) has called on Governor Dauda Lawal to work more effectively with federal security agencies in addressing the ongoing security challenges in the state.

This call follows the circulation of a video in which Governor Lawal, speaking in Hausa, expressed concern about the limited control he has over security operations in Zamfara.

In the video, he stated that although he had provided 150 vehicles and tracking devices for security agencies, he could not direct their operations, as orders could only come from Abuja.

He suggested that with full authority over security agencies, banditry in the state could be resolved within two months.

Reacting in Gusau on Friday, ZGGN President Murtala Abdullahi urged the governor to prioritize collaboration and coordination with the Nigerian military and other federal agencies, noting that synergy is key to tackling the complex security situation in Zamfara.

“The governor’s remarks reflect the frustration many leaders face when dealing with national security matters,” Abdullahi said. “However, what is needed now is enhanced cooperation and consistent intelligence-sharing with institutions such as the Office of the National Security Adviser, the Department of State Services, and the military.”

He emphasised the importance of constructive engagement and noted that security remains a shared responsibility between federal and state actors.

Abdullahi also highlighted the sacrifices being made daily by security personnel across Zamfara and urged all leaders to support them with accurate information and logistical resources.

ZGGN further urged the governor to strengthen transparency in the use of security intelligence and equipment, and to continue pushing for policy reforms through dialogue with the federal government.

The group acknowledged recent security incidents in local government areas such as Kaura Namoda and Bukkuyum, where several residents were reported killed or abducted. It emphasized the urgent need for sustained, coordinated efforts to curb such violence.

“We understand the challenges involved in security administration, and we encourage Governor Lawal to engage more proactively with all relevant agencies,” Abdullahi stated. “It is our hope that stronger partnerships will lead to more impactful solutions.”

ZGGN also called on civil society, religious, and traditional leaders to support peacebuilding efforts, while encouraging communities to remain vigilant and continue reporting suspicious activities.

The group concluded by reaffirming its commitment to good governance, accountability, and the safety of all Zamfara residents.
