    Northern Senators condemn Zamfara killings

The Northern Senators Forum has extended heartfelt condolences to the people of Kaura Namoda in Zamfara State, especially the families of victims affected by the recent mass abduction and killing in the area.

In a statement issued in Abuja, the Chairman of the Forum, Senator Abdulaziz Yar’Adua, described the killing of at least 35 innocent civilians—despite ransom payments—as a tragic reflection of the worsening security situation in the country.

“We condemn this heinous act in the strongest possible terms. It does not reflect the values, people, or aspirations of the North,” Yar’Adua said.

He reaffirmed the North’s commitment to peace and hospitality, stressing that such acts of violence threaten the region’s core values of unity, peace, and security.

“We stand in solidarity with the people of Zamfara State during this difficult time and pray that Allah grants the departed souls eternal rest. May their families find solace in the face of this tragedy.

“We urge the security agencies to collaborate with local vigilantes to ensure that those responsible for this atrocity are brought to justice. Furthermore, we call on the Nigeria Police and other security agencies to be more proactive in their response to security threats. Intelligence gathering and sharing among agencies must be improved to prevent such incidents in the future.

“We appreciate the efforts of Mr. President and Commander-in-Chief, Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR for his continued support for the security agencies, including funding and recent mass recruitments. We hope that more training of personnel will be achieved to curb incidents of this kind.”

JUST IN: Jubilation as Shinkafi Volunteer Forces kill bandit commander in Zamfara

Details have emerged on how notorious bandit kingpin Kachalla Yellow Danbokolo died at the weekend  in Zamfara State after an earlier gun battle with Shinkafi Volunteer Forces in the State.

Danbokolo’s death is being wildly celebrated in Zamfara State and many parts of the Northwest States as many locales know him as the leader of Bello  and the most dreaded bandit in the zone, even more dangerous than his cousin, Bello Turji, whom they describe as a mere spokesperson.

Security sources said Danbokolo and more than 173 bandits were killed after the blistering surprise attack  by the volunteer forces.

The sources could, however, neither  confirm nor deny the role of the Department of State Services (DSS) in the recent onslaughts which has greatly decimated the bandits, stating that the secret police has rather maintained shealth mode in these operations, “covert assault.”

According to the sources, Danbokolo, who sustained serious gun injuries during the attack, died over the weekend and was buried on Saturday. His death and that of several fighters loyal to him were reportedly being celebrated, particularly by residents of Kurya District in Shinkafi LGA, whom he had terrorised for yesrs.

One villager said: “We are in serious celebrations mood. It is hard to believe that Danbokolo, a man whose name used  to strike fear in our hearts, is no more. I can authoritatively tell you that Danbokolo is the man behind the mask. He is the overall Commander. Turji merely communicates, while dreaded Danbokolo is the executioner of all the evil.

“Not only Danbokolo was killed, at least, 173 bandits, loyal to him have been killed and buried within the week and several of them have fled the community. We see them running away after every raid on their hideouts,” he said.

Another resident confirmed that “known loyalists of Turji are now in a state of fear and confusion, and that some are now seeking  to  surrender as they see the end in sight.”

He said: “This is the first time we believe that these bandits will soon be gone for good. Bello Turji has no hiding place. Knowing that his days are numbered, he and some of his foot soldiers have begun to desperately beg for amnesty. “

These strikes by the volunteer forces on Turji’s main stronghold are the first since the onset of organised banditry in the region.

It has devastated the bandits including the death of Danbokolo, who residents believe is the Commander of terror. While DSS has remained silent, these volunteers, however, keep referencing support from the Agency.

The source also retaliated that locals in the area have been massively jubilating following the killings, with most farmers expressing the hope that they won’t have to pay taxes to bandits in this farming season.

They thanked President Bola Ahmed Tinibu for the intervention.

Zamfara Govt denies loan allegation claims by media outfit

The government of Zamfara State has refuted claims made by an online platform, Sahara Reporters, which alleged that the current administration, led by Governor Dr. Dauda Lawal, has taken loans.

Hon. Abdulmalik Gajam, the Zamfara Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning in a statement on Tuesday, said the report contradicts the governor’s earlier assertions made during a press briefing, where he confidently stated that Zamfara State possesses the financial capability to initiate and complete any project without facing financial constraints, and that no loans had been taken under his administration.

He clarified that the loans referenced by Sahara Reporters were accrued during the tenure of former Governor Bello Matawalle, who is currently serving as the Minister of State for Defence.

“This distinction is crucial, as it places the responsibility for the state’s outstanding debts squarely on the previous administration,” he said.

Gajam vehemently condemned the allegations presented by the media outlet, labelling them as misleading and unfounded.

He characterised the article as “sensationalist, even going so far as to describe it as ‘gonzo journalism’; a term commonly used to refer to a style of journalism that blends factual reporting with subjective narrative.

Gajam explained that the budget for 2023, which was scrutinised in the Sahara report, was crafted during the Matawalle administration and featured an allocation of ₦53.2 billion earmarked solely for servicing the debts inherited from that government. “This critical clarification emphasises that Governor Lawal has not undertaken any new borrowing since he took office”.

Furthermore, Gajam urged the online platform to redirect any inquiries related to these loans and their intended purposes to former Governor Matawalle, who was responsible for securing these financial resources.

“Sahara Reporters should direct their questions to the former governor regarding the use of those loans, taken during his tenure and which, by most accounts, yielded little to no developmental outcome. That is the existing debt being serviced today.”

The state government also highlighted several significant discrepancies in the way the online platform portrayed financial information, particularly regarding their interpretation of the state’s officially documented budget.

Gajam issued a challenge to the publication, requesting that they provide any documentary evidence to back their claims that the Lawal administration has sought or acquired new loan facilities.

“We hereby challenge Sahara Reporters to produce any documentary evidence indicating that the current administration under Governor Lawal has sought or secured any new loan facilities, domestic or international. None exist.”

The Zamfara government reaffirmed its dedication to transparency and responsible fiscal management. The administration expressed its intent to clarify these important issues for the public, emphasising the necessity of understanding the historical context surrounding the state’s current financial situation. By doing so, they aim to ensure that the citizens are accurately informed about the state’s financial health and the integrity with which their government operates.

…slams display of alcohol at Zamfara mid-term anniversary

A prominent Islamic organisation in Zamfara State has called for the preservation of the state’s long-standing religious and cultural values following the recent celebration marking Governor Dauda Lawal’s second year in office.

In a statement issued to journalists in Gusau on Friday, the Zamfara Ulama Defence Forum (ZUDF) expressed concern over aspects of the anniversary event, urging public officials to remain mindful of the moral standards that have historically defined governance in the state.

According to the group, the anniversary event held in the state capital, featured musical performances accompanied by skimpily dressed female dancers, and the open consumption of alcoholic beverages — acts considered unacceptable under Islamic law and cultural norms in Zamfara.

The president of the group, Sheikh Bashir Mu’azu Marafa, noted that the state has long served as a model for religious governance and urged leaders to continue upholding those values.

“Zamfara is a land of honour and religious discipline. We must be cautious about the kind of public events we organise and the message they send to the younger generation,” Sheikh Marafa said.

“We call on all stakeholders, including the state house of assembly and community-based organisations, to ensure that public celebrations reflect the values cherished by the people of Zamfara,” the statement added.

The group appreciated members of the public who constructively voiced their concerns, particularly the youth, and reaffirmed its commitment to promoting community awareness and accountability in governance.

“The Zamfara Ulama Defence Forum will continue to engage with leaders and citizens to support actions that strengthen our collective identity and moral integrity,” the group said.

Zamfara govt dismisses report of alleged Sharia trial of Christian convert as fake news

The Zamfara State Government has refuted a viral report claiming that a woman named Zainab Muhamadu, allegedly a Christian convert, is set to face trial in a Sharia court for changing her religion.

In a statement issued on Tuesday by Sulaiman Idris, spokesperson to Governor Dauda Lawal, the government dismissed the report as entirely false and described it as a fabrication from social media sources seeking traffic and sensationalism.

According to the statement, thorough investigations revealed that no such case exists in any Sharia Court within Zamfara State.

“The attention of the Zamfara State Government has been drawn to mischievous fake news circulating about a 22-year-old Miss Zainab Muhamadu, who is facing the death penalty for converting to Christianity,” the statement read.

“We want to categorically state that it is the handiwork of enemies of peace, who are hellbent on creating a tension where there is none. The fake news, which was spread on social media by an online platform notorious for circulating unverified stories and falsehoods, is nothing more than a failed attempt to disrupt peace.”

The government further explained that it consulted with all relevant authorities and security agencies, including the Grand Khadi of the Zamfara Sharia Court of Appeal, who confirmed that “there has never been such a case before any Shari’a court in Zamfara State.”

Raising concerns over the intent behind the story, the statement questioned: “The question is, where does this perilous and divisive narrative originate? What are its underlying motives? What do those promoting this story hope to accomplish in the long run?”

It also criticised media platforms that disseminate unverified content, saying: “Media platforms that should provide the public with verified stories are becoming complacent, merely copying and pasting content from social media accounts eager for likes and comments.”

The government clarified that the woman whose photo was used in the report is not Nigerian, but an American named Aalia from Texas.

“The Zamfara State Government believes it is essential to clarify that nothing of this nature is happening in the state. This situation exemplifies yellow journalism that we must all denounce,” the statement continued.

Concluding, the government called on security agencies to trace the origin of the false story and ensure those responsible are brought to justice.

“We urge the relevant security agencies to investigate the source of this fake, misguided story, which seeks to create significant religious tension, and prosecute anyone found responsible. We must all do our part to ensure the peace of this country,” the statement concluded.

Insecurity: Group blasts Zamfara govt, calls for governor’s resignation

A civic group based in the North-West, the Coalition for Good Governance and Accountability in the North-West (COGGAN), has urged Zamfara State Governor Dauda Lawal to resign over the state government’s inability to fulfil campaign promises, especially in addressing insecurity and improving basic education.

In a statement released on Tuesday and signed by its president, Alhaji Ibrahim Anka, the group said the current administration has not met expectations since taking office in 2023.

COGGAN recalled that during the 2023 campaign, Governor Lawal promised to end banditry within three months.

However, the group noted that over a year later, insecurity persists in many parts of the state.

The group also expressed concern over the continued attacks on communities, disruptions to farming activities, and challenges facing rural markets and education.

According to the statement, the situation has left many residents vulnerable and unable to carry out their daily lives safely.

On education, the group highlighted what it sees as limited progress in addressing challenges within the sector.

It claimed that Zamfara still struggles with poor access to quality basic education, calling for more visible efforts to improve infrastructure and learning conditions.

COGGAN further urged the state government to enhance transparency and accountability in the use of public funds, including federal allocations and special intervention funds.

It stressed the need for clearer communication on how resources are being deployed for development.

The group concluded by calling on Governor Lawal to step down, saying the people of Zamfara deserve leadership that prioritises their safety, education, and welfare.

Group urges EFCC probe into alleged LG funds mismanagement in Zamfara

A civic advocacy group, Zamfara Accountability and Development Coalition (ZADC), has called on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to investigate the alleged mismanagement of local government allocations in Zamfara State.

In a statement issued on Sunday and signed by its President, Salisu Bako Maradun, ZADC accused top officials in Zamfara state of hijacking and diverting funds meant for grassroots development.

The group alleged that the officials had formed a “self-serving alliance” to control and misappropriate the funds allocated to the state’s 14 local government areas.

“These individuals have effectively captured the financial architecture of Zamfara’s local governments. Their actions amount to economic sabotage and betrayal of public trust,” the group stated.

ZADC lamented that funds from the federation account meant for local councils are routinely withheld and mismanaged, leaving communities without essential services or infrastructure.

“Month after month, huge allocations arrive but disappear before reaching the grassroots. Local governments in Zamfara have become ceremonial entities while the looting happens in Gusau,” it alleged.

According to the group, the alleged financial mismanagement is directly responsible for the collapse of basic services across rural communities.

It further criticised the operations of the state’s Joint Allocation Committee (JAC), describing the process as opaque and lacking accountability, adding that local government chairmen are often kept in the dark about actual disbursements.

“Communities in Talata Mafara, Maru, Bukkuyum, Tsafe, Gummi, Kaura-Namoda, and Bakura have seen no visible government presence in over a year. This is not neglect, it is systematic looting,” the group asserted.

ZADC demanded that the EFCC commence a comprehensive probe into the state’s local government finances and arrest officials found culpable.

“The people of Zamfara have suffered enough. This impunity must end. Every kobo must be traced and returned to benefit the grassroots. Zamfara belongs to its people, not to a privileged few,” ZADC said.

Rep raises alarm over increasing banditry in Zamfara

A member of the House of Representatives representing Kaura Namoda/Birni Magaji federal Constituency of Zamfara state, Aminu Sani Jaji, has raised the alarm over the rising cases of insecurity and banditry in the state and called for synergy between and among security agencies and communities to address the issue.

Jaji, who heads the House committee on ecological fund, said at a news conference in Abuja that the level of insecurity in the state is at such a high level that the people of the state, particularly Kaura Namoda/Birni Magaji, just walk around aimlessly, not knowing where they are going.

He said there was no need for a state of emergency in Zamfara as being demanded by some persons, since there was no complete breakdown of law and order in the state.

He, however, opposed the clamour for the hiring of machinery by the government to help in the fight against banditry, adding that security agents in the country should rather be encouraged and equipped to carry out their assigned mandate.

Jaji painted a gloomy picture of happening in the area, which he said has gone unreported, adding that over 200 persons are currently in captivity of the bandits while they parade the area unchally.

He recalled that one of the promises of the present government during the campaign was to ensure the security of the lives of the people, warning that although the government is doing everything possible to keep the promise, there is a lot that still needs to be done.

The lawmaker said the situation in the state has become so alarming to the extent that kidnapping and invasion of communities have become almost a daily occurrence, with about 60 persons kidnapped from a village about 2 weeks ago, while the kidnappers demanded about N30 million for their release.

He said even after some of the victims were killed, the kidnappers kept insisting on the N30 million ransom, with their leader insisting on killing a young man who fell in his presence because of his ailment.

“The leader of the kidnappers went to the House of the young man who was epileptic and insisted that the family bring him out for him to shoot. When they were delaying in bringing him, they shot two in the compound, saying they would keep killing them until they brought him out. The father had to bring out the boy, and they shut him.

“Another situation was when a pregnant woman who was kidnapped delivered a set of twins in the kidnappers’ den. The leader collected the children and threw them to his dogs. That is the situation we find ourselves in right now.

“The people cannot go to the farm right. In fact, the people of my constituency are just walking around, not because they know where they are going. The people of Zamfara and, by extension, the North West deserve to be protected. We need action to be taken.

“I am aware that the government is doing its best. But there is a lot that needs to be done. We need serious stakeholder collaboration. There is a need for synergy between the security agencies and the communities. We need collective responsibility to address the challenges we are facing at the moment.

“Insecurity is one issue that we must all have a consensus on how to address. If we don’t do that, it might consume not only Zamfara and the North West, but the entire country. Right now, it is negatively affecting the country’s GDP because there is no access to agriculture.

“Whether micro or macro operation, something must be done. We must have a plurality of what must be done. Our role as legislators is to represent the people and do what we think is right by the laws of the land.”

Speaking on the resurgence of Boko Haram and the clamour for machine guns, Jaji expressed concern about the management of repentant Boko Haram, whom he said had been trained and indoctrinated to kill.

He said such repentant Boko Haram members need to be deradicalised so that they don’t return to their activities before being re-integrated into society, adding that there should be a government policy of deradicalisation.

He said the head of the security agencies and the National Security Adviser should take it as a matter of priority to first deradicalise repentant Boko Haram members, while expressing confidence in the ability of the nation’s security to tackle the situation.
