THE STORY OF EARTH AND SKY (2)

Suddenly, Earth noticed the freckle
On Sky’s chin; then his missing molar;
His once musical snore
Became a noxious noise

Sky’s eyes opened to the little bulge
Around Earth’s waistline;
Her wide, irregular face,
The sorry sag of her breasts. . .. .
Sky beheld pimples where once
He worshipped a pageant of dimples

In the beginning
Earth and Sky were husband and wife

Ha gbaga! (Alas),
Rogbodiyan** found its way into the house
And tranquility commenced an instant exit
The world watched a harmonious home
Hollowed out into a haunted house

Ah, ija lo de t’orin d’owe
Oro o wo mo rara
Yee, ara o, e je ko bu mi***

In the beginning
Earth and Sky were husband and wife

Earth sat solid in her timeless domain
Sky went up and up and up
Till his eyes turned blue and grey
And his roost became a vast expanse
Towering over Earth like an endless dome
A cloud thickened between the two
As a misty distance undid the bridge
Between their eyes

In the beginning
Earth and Sky were wife and husband
