Two boys die in Effurun barracks fire

Two boys have died in a fire incident that gutted an apartment in 3 Battalion, Nigerian Army Barracks, Effurun, Uvwie council area of Delta State.

A girl reportedly escaped from the inferno which occurred in the early hours of Tuesday.

One of the deceased children was reportedly a biological child of an officer at the barracks while the other was said to have visited during the past weekend.

It was gathered that the two boys were sleeping together in the room when the fire broke out.

Though details of the incident were sketchy, it was learnt that only the said apartment was affected.

The three children were reportedly the only occupants in the apartment at the time of the incident.

Authorities of the barracks could not be reached, while assistant director, Army Public Relations Officer of 63 Brigade Headquarters, Asaba, was yet to reply a text message sent to his phone line as of press time.

However, an officer who craved anonymity confirmed the incident.

“The incident happened in the early hours of Tuesday. Three children were involved but one of them was able to escape the mysterious fire which was later put out.

“One of the children was brought there to spend the weekend by his mother,” the military officer revealed.
