Foundation secures acquittal of Septuagenarian after eight-year trial in Lagos

A nonprofit organisation focused on ensuring access to justice for all, the Foundation for Public Interest Law and Development (FPILD) has secured the discharge and acquittal of a 70-year-old man, Pa Idowu Fashola, after an eight-year legal battle over an allegation of defilement of a minor.

The Executive Director of the Foundation, Barrister Yusuf Nurudeen, who represented the defendant in court, made this known in a statement issued on Monday.

He said Fashola was discharged and acquitted on December 1, 2025, by Justice Rahman Oshodi of the Lagos State Special Offences Court sitting in Ikeja, following the dismissal of a one-count charge of defilement filed against him.

The prosecution had alleged that in 2017, Pa Fashola engaged in sexual intercourse with a 13-year-old girl, Elizabeth Babatunde, described as the granddaughter of his wife’s elder sister.

Following his arraignment, the defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge.

He was initially arraigned on February 6, 2020, before Honourable Justice S.O. Nwaka, who is now a Justice of the Court of Appeal.

The matter was later reassigned, and Pa Fashola was re-arraigned on November 17, 2021, before Justice Oshodi, where he again entered a plea of not guilty.

During the trial, the prosecution called four witnesses.

According to the prosecution’s case, a neighbour allegedly observed inappropriate conduct involving the prosecutrix (alleged victim) and her father, which prompted a report to the Community for the Defence of Human Rights (CDHR).

Investigations subsequently led to the arraignment of Pa Fashola.

Fashola, who hails from Lagelu Local Government Area of Ibadan, Oyo State, denied the allegation, stating in his testimony that he was merely informed that he had been accused of having sexual intercourse with the prosecutrix.

Delivering his judgment, Justice Oshodi held that the prosecution failed to provide credible and admissible evidence to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that the defendant had sexual intercourse with the prosecutrix in 2017.

The Court observed that the failure of the prosecutrix to give first-hand testimony on the alleged incident was fatal to the prosecution’s case.

Justice Oshodi noted that the prosecutrix neither testified nor identified her alleged assailant with certainty, adding that her absence created a fundamental gap in the evidence, which could not be cured by the testimony of witnesses who did not personally witness the alleged act. The judge consequently discharged and acquitted the defendant.

Speaking on the ruling, Barrister Nurudeen commended the court for upholding strict evidentiary standards and preserving the integrity of the criminal justice system.

He added that “the system depends on the consistent application of due process safeguards, irrespective of the nature or sensitivity of the offence charged.”

Nurudeen further described the ruling as a reaffirmation of the principle that an accused person is presumed innocent until proven guilty, while calling for diligence and fairness in the investigation and prosecution of sensitive criminal cases.

He assured that his organisation will continue to fight for justice for all through research, strategic litigation, advocacy, and pro bono services for the indigent, while also promoting good governance, human rights, and sustainable development in Africa.

LASTMA rolls out traffic control plan ahead of festival season in Lagos

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has unveiled an extensive, intelligence-driven traffic control strategy aimed at ensuring smooth vehicular movement and public safety across the state.

In a statement issued by LASTMA spokesman, Adebayo Taofiq, the yuletide season typically witnesses a sharp increase in traffic volume, fuelled by concerts, carnivals, end-of-year parties, religious gatherings and other recreational activities.

To address the expected pressure on the road network, LASTMA has intensified its operational readiness through the deployment of experienced traffic officers, enhanced surveillance systems and round-the-clock monitoring of key traffic corridors, event locations, commercial hubs and major arterial roads.

Speaking on the initiative, the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, warned operators of event centres, clubs, lounges and other entertainment facilities to put in place effective internal traffic and parking arrangements capable of accommodating their patrons within their premises.

He stressed that any spillover of vehicles onto public roads that results in obstruction or gridlock would attract strict enforcement measures, describing such practices as a violation of the collective right of Lagos residents to safe and unhindered movement.

Bakare-Oki also urged market leaders, traders’ associations and other commercial stakeholders to prevent their members from displaying goods on roadways, walkways and pedestrian paths.

According to him, the encroachment of public spaces forces pedestrians onto the road, increasing the risk of accidents and worsening traffic congestion.

The traffic authority further cautioned motorists to ensure their vehicles are in good mechanical condition before embarking on journeys during the festive period. Drivers were also warned against driving under the influence of alcohol or intoxicating substances and reminded to comply strictly with government-approved speed limits.

LASTMA reassured the public that its enforcement teams would remain vigilant and uncompromising in enforcing traffic regulations, including those against illegal parking, road obstruction, speeding and impaired driving throughout the Detty December period and beyond.

The agency appealed to all road users to cooperate with traffic officers, obey traffic laws and exercise patience and civic responsibility to ensure a safe and enjoyable festive season for residents and visitors.

The authority also disclosed that high-, medium- and low-capacity tow trucks have been strategically positioned across the state, particularly along the Lekki–Ajah corridor, to promptly clear vehicle breakdowns and other emergencies.

The activation of the LASTMA 24-hour Night Gang Duty was also announced to monitor and regulate vehicular movement before, during and after the yuletide season.

Edo demolishes kidnappers hideout in Estako East

Edo State government has demolished structures and shanties suspectsd to kidnappers’ hideout at Obu/Oguda/Bua Cement Axis of the Okpella-Okene highway.

The demolished structures, according to the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Monday Okpebholo, were discovered through intelligence reports and investigations.

He said investigations showed they were used as operational bases from which kidnappers carried out their nefarious activities.

He noted the area served as a holding point where abducted victims were kept before ransoms were demanded and collected.

According to him, “The axis has long been dreaded by residents and motorists, having gained notoriety as a haven for hardened criminals who instilled fear in the area. Several past attempts to flush them out reportedly proved abortive, making the location a major security concern for the Okpebholo-led administration.

“However, on December 20, 2025, at about 9:30 a.m., the area fell to the superior strategic planning and resolve of the Edo State Government as the illegal structures were pulled down, restoring a sense of safety to the community.

The demolition exercise was carried out by the Edo State Development and Building Control Agency, led by Town Planning Officer, Williams Ovenseri, who supervised the removal of the illegal shanties used by the suspected criminals.

During the operation, the suspects reportedly resisted security efforts by blocking the Okpella–Okene Expressway at the Obu/Oguda/Bua cement Axis, allegedly using human shields. Despite the resistance, security forces maintained control and ensured the success of the operation.

“With the demolition completed, the area, once a hotspot for kidnappings and attacks on motorists, has become relatively calm, while security agencies continue to maintain surveillance to prevent any resurgence of criminal activities.

“The successful operation marks a significant breakthrough for the Okpebholo administration, underscoring its firm commitment to winning the war against crime and ensuring the safety of lives and property across Edo State.”

  • Nigeria deploys new electronic navigational charts to Calabar, Bakassi channels

Nigeria deploys new electronic navigational charts to Calabar, Bakassi channels

To ensure safety of mariners using the Calabar-Bakassi channel, Nigeria has deployed three newly produced Electronic Navigational Charts (ENCs) validated by the International Centre for Electronic Navigational Charts (IC-ENC).

The charts, NG455150 (Jamestown), NG525190 (Queenstown to Ikot Abasi), and NG542550 (Ports of Calabar), will boost marine transportation and safety as more vessels influx are expected with the planned Bakassi Deep Seaport.

Also, this developments means that Nigeria will no longer seek amd await clearance from Cameroon for vessels navigating inward and outside the channels.

Announcing the feat, the National Hydrographic Agency (NHA), noted that all vessels traversing Nigeria’s coastal approaches through the eastern channel up to the inner port limits would rely on the Nigerian-produced ENCs.

The charts, it said, provide modern digital coverage and present mariners with an integrated and up-to-date picture of water depths, seabed features, navigational hazards, aids to navigation and harbour infrastructure essential for safe passage to Calabar and the future Bakassi Deep Seaport.

According to the Hydrographer of the Federation and Chief Executive Officer, NHA, Rear Admiral Ayo Olugbode, said the charts were produced from a recent high-resolution survey of the Calabar-Bakassi axis conducted to international standards and comparable to IHO S-44 Order 1 for busy approaches and harbour entrances.

“The survey process formally commenced on 21 December 2024, with intensive data acquisition beginning on 6 January 2025. The work combined hydrographic, geophysical and geotechnical measurements using advanced NHA survey and processing capabilities.

“The sea is our largest unexplored resource, and if we don’t map it, we can’t manage it,” said Olugbode.

He stressed that the production of critical navigational charts not only enhances safety in Nigerian waters but also assures the productive exploitation and development of the nation’s blue economy.

Olugbode further affirmed that chart production for Lagos, Calabar and the Bonny axis forms part of the phased mapping strategy of the NHA, underscoring the priority accorded to those areas.

He disclosed that over 85,325 square kilometres of Nigeria’s maritime domain has been mapped to date, with the Calabar sector identified as a critical link in a wider network of ENCs designed to lower navigational risk for ships heading to Nigerian ports.

The newly released ENCs replaced legacy products with modern digital charts integrated into global ENC networks, providing up-to-date depth, seabed and navigation information.

“The initiative aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, strengthens Nigeria’s status as a regional hydrographic leader and directly supports the Bakassi Deep Seaport project and Calabar Port operations,” he added.

Aiyedatiwa donates brand new bus to Ondo NUJ correspondents’ chapel

In a move aimed at strengthening media operations and supporting journalists in the discharge of their constitutional duties, Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has approved the donation of a brand new bus to the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ondo State Council.

The governor announced the approval on Saturday night at a Media Stakeholders’ Dinner held at the Banquet Hall of the Government House, Akure.

The Nation reports that the event brought together journalists, media executives, and top government officials to review media–government relations in the state.

The approval followed a passionate appeal by the Chairman of the Correspondents’ Chapel, Comrade Tosin Ajuwon, who commended Governor Aiyedatiwa for what he described as visible developmental strides across Ondo State under the administration’s OUR EASE Agenda.

Ajuwon said the agenda had translated into tangible, people-oriented projects across key sectors, including infrastructure, healthcare, education, agriculture, and urban renewal, cutting across the state’s three senatorial districts.

According to him, the spread and impact of these projects had strengthened public confidence in the government’s commitment to inclusive governance, while repositioning the state on the path of sustainable socio-economic growth.

He, however, drew the governor’s attention to the transportation challenges faced by correspondents who cover government activities across the state.

“Your Excellency, members of the Correspondents’ Chapel represent national newspapers and often travel long distances under difficult conditions to cover official assignments. An official bus will significantly enhance our efficiency, safety, and prompt reportage,” Ajuwon pleaded.

Responding, Governor Aiyedatiwa described the media as a strategic partner in governance, stressing that responsible journalism is indispensable to democracy, transparency, and accountability.

He noted that the media serves as the bridge between government and the people, adding that without journalists, government policies, programmes, and achievements would not effectively reach the grassroots.

The governor immediately approved the request, directing that a brand new bus be released to the Correspondents’ Chapel.

“I have listened to your request. We have three buses; two have been given out already. The remaining one has my approval. This is our way of supporting the media to do their job better,” Aiyedatiwa declared, to loud applause from journalists.

The governor further assured media practitioners of his administration’s commitment to press freedom, openness, and regular engagement, noting that constructive criticism helps the government to serve the people better.

He urged journalists to continue to uphold professional ethics by ensuring fairness, accuracy, and balance in their reportage.

Reflecting on the early days of his administration, which began in December 2023, Aiyedatiwa acknowledged that misinformation and unverified narratives initially strained relations between the press and government.

He said the appointment of officials to address falsehoods and improve communication culminated in his first formal engagement with media stakeholders in early 2024.

“Freedom of expression is allowed. People can speak their minds, even if they criticise me directly. Ththe government learns and improves,” the governor said.

He cautioned against over-reliance on anonymous sources, noting that such reports could sometimes distort facts, while assuring that his administration prefers learning from reports rather than suppressing dissent.

Aiyedatiwa also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to transparency and institutional support for the media, including ongoing efforts to address challenges at the NUJ Press Centre.

He disclosed that plans to convert Owena Press Limited into a corporation were ongoing, adding that he had directed the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr Kayode Ajulo, SAN, to review the legal implications.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Idowu Ajanaku, commended the governor for prioritising action over propaganda, praising the media for focusing on government activities, including the state’s billion-dollar refinery project.

In his welcome address, the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Prince Ebenezer Adeniyan, said the relationship between the government and the media had improved significantly in the past year, listing several support initiatives extended to media organisations and journalists.

Speaking for the electronic media, the Group Chief Operating Officer of Crest FM, Adeolu Gboyega, urged the government to resolve outstanding commitments inherited from the previous administration, while commending Adeniyan for improving government–media relations.

The Chairman of the NUJ Ondo State Council, Comrade Leke Adegbite, praised the appointment of seasoned journalists as Commissioner for Information and CPS, while highlighting challenges facing Owena Press staff and the Ministry of Information.

He also noted that the sitting governor is traditionally the Grand Patron of the NUJ, and Governor Aiyedatiwa was accordingly decorated as Grand Patron at the event.

Woman ‘fakes’ own kidnap, collects N2.5m from diaspora husband

…Lagos Police arrest five other suspects

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a housewife, Mrs. Misturah Bada, and six others in two separate cases of fake and stage-managed kidnappings aimed at extorting money from family members.

Mrs Bada, 26, was arrested by operatives of the command’s Special Squad alongside her alleged accomplice, Adedamola Daniel, 30.

Police said the woman allegedly extorted N2.5m from her husband, a Nigerian resident in South Africa.

The husband, according to the police, raised the alarm on November 24, after receiving information that his wife had been kidnapped and a ransom of ₦10 million demanded.

The amount was later reduced to ₦3 million but he eventually paid ₦2.5 million. However, the alleged kidnappers failed to release her prompting the husband to file a complaint with the police.

“Following investigations, Mrs. Bada was located, reunited with her family and invited for debriefing. She claimed she was kidnapped by six armed men who dispossessed her of her iPhone 12 Pro Max. “However, inconsistencies in her account led to further investigation.

On December 3, operatives arrested Daniel in Ede, Osun State. A SIM card linked to the WhatsApp account used for ransom negotiations was recovered from him.

“He confessed that Mrs. Bada requested his SIM card to open the account and provided the OTP used to operate it.

Confronted with the evidence, Mrs. Bada admitted to staging the kidnapping to extort money from her husband.

Her phone, earlier claimed to be with the kidnappers, was recovered from one Yusuf Sodiq, 34, who said he bought it from her for ₦380,000,” the police said.

Relatedly, detectives of the Anti-Kidnapping Tactical Squad arrested five suspects over a viral video showing a schoolboy allegedly kidnapped.

Police said the incident, initially reported as a missing person case on November 26, was staged by the boy, Victor Aligwo, 15, with four friends.

Investigations revealed that the suspects used a room belonging to one of them to record a distress video of Aligwo pleading for help, with the aim of extorting money from his mother, who had recently received ₦4 million.

A ransom of ₦1.7 million was paid and shared among the suspects before police traced the transaction through a POS terminal and arrested them.

The suspects were identified as Kosiko Patrick, 17; Victor Aligwo, 15; David Odudu, 19; Anyabike Kingsley, 20; and Umeh Victor, 19.

The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Olohundare Jimoh, warned against false reporting, criminal deception and acts that divert security resources.

He assured residents that the command was committed to protecting lives and property, urging the public to report suspicious activities through the police emergency lines.

All suspects will be charged to court upon the conclusion of investigations, the police assured.
