Police Inspector arrested for supplying arms to bandits in Niger

A Police Inspector attached to the Niger State Government House, Minna, has been arrested for selling arms and ammunition to bandits and other criminals across the state, following an investigation that culminated in the suicide of a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP).

The suspect, identified as Inspector John Moses, confessed that the weapons were supplied by the late DSP, Abdullahi Isah, who was attached to the Police Mobile Force 12 in Minna.

Moses was taken into custody after investigations linked him to the diversion of firearms and ammunition intended for official security operations.

Niger State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abiodun Wasiu, confirmed that Moses admitted selling the arms and ammunition to bandits and hoodlums in Erena community, Shiroro Local Government Area, using his brother as a middleman.

A preliminary audit revealed that 13 AK-47 rifles and over 2,000 rounds of ammunition were missing, with discrepancies specifically noted in the AK-47 inventory.

BPP deserves GWR recognition for saving over N1trn through enhanced price Intelligence in one budget cycle’

The Progressives Think-Tank, a foremost political and policy advocacy group promoting the achievements and legacy of president Bola Ahmed has hailed the Bureau of Public Procurement (BPP) for achieving a landmark milestone in public finance management, saving over one trillion naira in a single budget cycle through enhanced price intelligence and benchmarking mechanisms.

The group said: “This unprecedented achievement, realised under the leadership of the Director-General, Dr. Adebowale Adedokun, represents the most significant cost-saving in the history of the Bureau and is being recognised as one of the most remarkable feats in procurement reform on the African continent.”

In a statement to newsmen by the acting National Coordinator of the group, Ms. ChristianaTitus, The Progressives Think-Tank commended the BPP for commitment to transparency, efficiency, and fiscal discipline, noting that these savings surpass the cumulative amount recorded by the Bureau from 2007 to 2024.

The group stated that this milestone is not only a testament to the leadership of Adedokun but also a reflection of the Federal Government’s decisive reforms aimed at strengthening procurement processes across Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs).

The Think-Tank described the achievement as a demonstration of how strategic procurement practices, guided by data-driven intelligence and strict adherence to due process, can generate substantial economic benefits for the nation. They highlighted that the savings recorded are directly linked to improved contract management, better price negotiations, and rigorous monitoring of procurement activities, which have collectively reduced waste and maximised value for public resources.

In a special note of eulogy, The Progressives Think-Tank praised the appointment of Adedokun as the Director-General of BPP, describing it as a case of a round peg in a round hole.

They stated that his exceptional blend of competence, integrity, and visionary leadership perfectly aligns with the demands of the Bureau.

The group noted that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s strategic decision to recognise and position a capable asset like Adedokun at the helm of procurement underscores a deep understanding of the importance of human capital in achieving government reforms.

According to the Think-Tank, such appointments not only accelerate reform agendas but also signal to the nation and the international community that the government values professionalism and results-oriented leadership.

“The BPP truly deserves recognition from the Guinness World Records (GWR). Candidly, such an award would be a fitting tribute to this extraordinary achievement, which serves as an inspiration for other government institutions to adopt similar reforms and accountability measures,” The Think-Tank said.

The group urged the government to continue institutionalising these best practices to ensure sustainability, stressing that consistent oversight, transparency, and professional management are essential to prevent lapses and maintain public confidence.

The Think-Tank also commended the alignment of these achievements with President Tinubu’s Nigeria First Policy, which prioritises local content and promotes domestic industries. They noted that procurement reforms, when executed with precision and integrity, can simultaneously advance national economic growth, create jobs, and strengthen domestic enterprises.

“This historic milestone marks a turning point in Nigeria’s procurement system, positioning the BPP as a model of excellence in governance and public sector efficiency. We remain committed to supporting the Bureau and will continue to monitor and advocate for reforms that ensure public resources are managed transparently, responsibly, and in the best interest of the Nigerian people.” The group said.

The group concluded by calling on all stakeholders, including civil society organisations, the media, and the private sector, to celebrate this achievement while collaborating to maintain and expand the culture of transparency and accountability in Nigeria’s procurement landscape.

Tinubu committed to efficient, accountable justice sector – AGF Fagbemi

The Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN) has assured of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s commitment to ensuring a justice sector that is accountable and capable of delivering timely outcomes.

In a statement on Sunday, the AGF’s spokesman, Kamarudeen Ogundele, said Fagbemi spoke in Abuja at the launch of the Enterprise Content Management System (ECMS) by the Federal Ministry of Justice, during which he also inaugurated the renovated staff clinic, sports centre, creche and staff canteen.

According to Ogundele, the ECMS is a digital platform that enables the ministry to create, process, approve, store and retrieve official documents electronically.

Fagbemi, Ogundele added, said the launch of the ECMS marked the ministry’s departure from the era of manual and unstructured information management.

Ogundele quoted the AGF as saying: “By digitizing our correspondences, emails, and legal documents, we are dismantling the bureaucratic bottlenecks that have historically slowed the wheels of justice.

“This transition to a paperless environment is a cornerstone of our digital transformation strategy, specifically aligned with Pillar 5 of the Federal Civil Service Strategy and Implementation Plan (FCSSIP25).

“The initiative is also firmly situated within the Renewed Hope Agenda of the President and the National Policy on Justice. These frameworks are unequivocal: justice institutions must be efficient, accountable, digitally enabled, and capable of delivering timely outcomes to Nigerians.

“The ECMS is therefore not merely a technological intervention; it is a governance reform that strengthens institutional memory, improves decision-making, secures records, and enforces discipline in workflow and accountability.

“This is the standard expected of a modern justice sector. Our goal is clear: to build a justice sector that is modern, efficient, and above all, citizen-driven.”

The AGF said the ministry under his leadership has prioritised staff welfare and workplace modernization to create an environment where excellence can thrive, mirroring the service-wide reforms spearheaded by the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation.

According to Ogundele, among dignitaries at the launch were the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Mrs. Didi Esther Walson-Jack; the ministry’s Solicitor-General of the Federation and Permanent Secretary, Mrs Beatrice Jeddy-Agba; Permanent Secretaries of Ministry of Interior, and Health and social welfare; as well as heads of agencies under the ministry.

Ogundele said Jeddy-Agba disclosed that the ministry has successfully scanned and uploaded 6,241 physical files comprising 331,297 pages onto the 1Gov Enterprise Content Management System in the last eight weeks.

He quoted Jeddy-Agba as saying: “Beyond digitization, we also achieved 100% official email coverage for all staff, conducted multiple tiers of ECM and digital skills training, activated departmental champions, and established clear SOPs and workflows for document tracking, approvals and departmental workflow.

“For too long, service delivery in the Ministry has been weighed down by challenges associated with managing physical documents, manual correspondences, and the inherent delays of a paper-heavy system.

“The ECMS “Go-Live” ceremony we celebrate today marks the end of that era. By digitizing our emails, files, and communications, we are adopting a modern, paperless culture that prioritizes efficiency and transparency.”

  • Afenifere hails revalidation of Ondo deep sea port licence, lauds Aiyedatiwa

Afenifere hails revalidation of Ondo deep sea port licence, lauds Aiyedatiwa

The pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, has lauded the Governor of Ondo state Lucky Aiyedatiwa, on the revalidation of the operating licence for the Ondo Deep Sea Port, describing the development as a historic milestone with far-reaching economic implications for the state, the South-West and Nigeria at large.

Recall that Governor Aiyedatiwa had said the proposed Ondo Deep Sea Port will serve as a major hub for international trade, benefiting not only Ondo State but Nigeria and neighbouring West African countries.

The governor stated this in Abuja after receiving the revalidated operating licence for the port from the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Chief Adegboyega Oyetola.

The licence, originally approved in 2023 by former President Muhammadu Buhari, was resubmitted for revalidation following errors discovered in the original document.

In a statement signed on Sunday by its National Organising Secretary, Kole Omololu, Afenifere said the revalidation of the licence marks a major stride in regional economic development and firmly positions Ondo State as an emerging maritime and industrial hub in the country.

According to the organisation, the revalidated licence has removed all lingering administrative and regulatory encumbrances, providing the legal certainty and institutional clarity required for the full-scale development of the port project.

“Uniquely positioned with a depth capable of accommodating very large vessels unable to berth at existing Lagos ports, the facility will decongest Nigeria’s busiest maritime corridor, enhance cargo handling efficiency, reduce turnaround times and lower logistics costs. This positions Ondo State at the forefront of next-generation port infrastructure in the country.

“Beyond state-level benefits, the port will drive economic activity across the South-West through industrial clustering, petrochemical expansion, agro-export processing, and manufacturing value chains.

“Multiplier effects include job creation, skills development, technology transfer and increased internally generated revenue for state and federal governments,” it read.

Afenifere noted that the development reflects purposeful governance, strategic foresight, and institutional discipline on the part of the Aiyedatiwa administration, adding that it would significantly strengthen investor confidence in the project and the state’s economic vision.

The organisation highlighted the unique advantage of the proposed port, noting that its natural depth would enable it to accommodate very large vessels that are unable to berth at the existing Lagos ports.

It said the Ondo Deep Sea Port would help decongest Nigeria’s busiest maritime corridor, improve cargo handling efficiency, reduce vessel turnaround time and lower logistics costs, thereby placing Ondo State at the forefront of next-generation port infrastructure in Nigeria.

Beyond its direct benefits to Ondo State, Afenifere said the port would stimulate economic activities across the South-West through industrial clustering, petrochemical expansion, agro-export processing, and manufacturing value chains.

The organisation added that the multiplier effects of the project would include job creation, skills development, technology transfer, and increased internally generated revenue for both the state and the federal government.

At the regional level, Afenifere said the port is expected to serve as a vital gateway within the ECOWAS trade ecosystem, supporting regional trade integration, trans-shipment services, and West Africa’s participation in global maritime commerce.

According to the group, the project would further strengthen Nigeria’s leadership role in sub-regional economic coordination and trade facilitation.

Afenifere also acknowledged the supportive role of the Federal Government and the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy in aligning the Ondo Deep Sea Port project with national development priorities, particularly economic diversification under the blue economy framework.

While commending Governor Aiyedatiwa for sustaining momentum on what it described as a transformative and legacy infrastructure project, the organisation urged continued collaboration among all stakeholders to ensure timely execution and operational excellence.

It, however, expressed confidence that the Ondo Deep Sea Port, when completed, would deliver enduring prosperity for Ondo State, the South-West, and Nigeria as a whole.

  • Telemedicine is lifeline for Nigeria’s strained health system, says report

Telemedicine is lifeline for Nigeria’s strained health system, says report

A new report by Rome Business School Nigeria has identified telemedicine as the most realistic pathway to fixing Nigeria’s worsening healthcare access crisis.

It warned that failure to embrace digital health could deepen poor health outcomes and stall economic growth.

The report, The Future and Opportunities of Telemedicine in Nigeria, released by the Rome Business School Nigeria Research Centre, said Nigeria’s health system is “at a breaking point,” citing chronic underfunding and acute manpower shortages as major threats.

According to the study, Nigeria spends about four per cent of its Gross Domestic Product (GDP) on health, a level the researchers described as grossly inadequate for a population of over 200 million people.

This has resulted in a severe shortage of healthcare workers, with an estimated doctor-to-patient ratio of one to 2,500.

Read Also: 2027: Amaechi’s posters flood Kaduna, spark early political speculations

The report also drew attention to stark regional disparities in healthcare delivery, noting that more than half of Nigerians live in rural areas with limited or no access to hospitals, clinics or specialist services.

In many cases, patients are forced to travel over 100 kilometres to access basic medical care.

Researchers said telemedicine could help bridge this gap by enabling patients in remote communities to consult doctors through mobile applications and video platforms, thereby reducing travel time, cost and delays in treatment.

“Telemedicine offers a practical way to connect underserved rural populations to quality healthcare,” the report stated, adding that digital consultations could significantly improve affordability and access for low-income Nigerians.

The study highlighted emerging local platforms such as MyMedicalBank and CloudClinic as early indications that telemedicine solutions can work within Nigeria’s healthcare environment.

The research was carried out under the leadership of Rome Business School’s Founder and Dean, Prof. Antonio Ragusa, alongside the General Manager of Rome Business School Nigeria, Olakunle Asunmo, and the Head of Academics, Sam Igwe.

They stressed that digital health should be seen beyond innovation. “Digital health is not just a healthcare solution; it is an economic necessity,” the report said, noting that healthier populations translate to improved productivity and long-term national growth.

However, the report warned that significant challenges could limit telemedicine’s impact if left unaddressed. Poor infrastructure, especially unstable electricity supply and weak internet connectivity, remains a major obstacle, with nearly 80 per cent of rural areas currently unable to support effective telemedicine services.

The ongoing brain drain in the health sector was also flagged, with an estimated 5,000 medical professionals leaving the country annually. In addition, weak regulation of digital health services and low digital literacy among patients were identified as factors undermining trust and adoption.

Despite these challenges, the report projected strong growth for Nigeria’s digital health sector over the next decade.

Advances in artificial intelligence and mobile technology are expected to improve the accuracy of remote diagnosis, while market projections suggest the sector could generate up to ₦185.66 billion in revenue before 2026.

Early gains are already being recorded, particularly in maternal health. The report noted that virtual prenatal care initiatives have shown the potential to reduce maternal mortality by up to 20 per cent.

Still, the researchers cautioned that without urgent investment in electricity, broadband infrastructure and supportive policies, telemedicine coverage may remain limited. By 2035, the report projects coverage of about 50 per cent in urban areas and just 20 per cent in rural communities.

The study concluded with a call for coordinated action, urging government, private sector stakeholders and educational institutions to work together to remove the structural barriers hindering Nigeria’s healthcare system and unlock the full potential of telemedicine.

2027: Amaechi’s posters flood Kaduna, spark early political speculations

Major streets in Kaduna were over the weekend adorned with colourful posters of former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi, a move observers said signals early political activity ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

The posters, featuring Amaechi’s portrait, projected him as a leading opposition figure, with inscriptions describing him as “the only person to be trusted” and “the only man for the job,” while emphasising themes of unity, equality, stability, and development.

Amaechi, who holds the traditional title of Dan Amanan Kasar Hausa of Daura, previously served as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly (1999–2007), Governor of Rivers State (2007–2015), and Minister of Transportation (2015–2023).

Residents of Kaduna metropolis spotted the posters at strategic locations, including Ahmadu Bello Way, Ali Akilu Way, the vicinity of the Kaduna State Government House, and the busy Kawo Bridge corridor stretching towards Zaria.

The displays drew public attention, with motorists and pedestrians slowing down to observe them, particularly around Kawo Bridge, where early-morning traffic was briefly disrupted.

Political analysts interpreted the sudden appearance of the posters as a signal that Amaechi’s supporters are beginning to mobilise in the north, a crucial voting bloc for any presidential contest.

While no official declaration has been made, the posters have intensified speculation about Amaechi’s possible renewed bid for the presidency and a potential opposition challenge to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in 2027.

Amaechi had previously contested the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential primary in 2022, finishing second behind Tinubu, ahead of then Vice President Yemi Osinbajo and former Senate President Ahmad Ibrahim Lawan.

  • A Migration Story That Refuses to Prettify The Dream

A Migration Story That Refuses to Prettify The Dream

..Review of ‘I Want to be a Writer’ by Olanrewaju Olajumoke Akinla

There is a moment midway through this work that stops you cold. The protagonist, having ripped apart every notebook and textbook in a fit of despair, creates a collage from the shreds and titles it “Carcass of a Dream.” That moment is brutal. It is honest. And it captures what this novella does best, a blatant refusal to prettify the migrant experience.

I Want to be a Writer tells the story of a young Nigerian woman, Olanrewaju, who boldly dubs herself “Shakespeare” as she leaves Lagos for England to study Creative Writing in defiance of her father’s dream of seeing her become Chief Judge. What unfolds is not the glossy narrative of “making it” abroad. It is far messier, funnier, and far more human. What begins as a whimsical tale of epiphanies inspired by “Dundee” the randy red-headed lizard, evolves into a raw meditation on grief, cultural dislocation, and the elusive nature of dreams.

The novella’s greatest strength is its cultural authenticity and unapologetically fresh voice. Akinla is new but she does not deny that she is. The novella paints Nigeria with loving, unflinching detail, from the bustling danfo buses, to hawkers dodging traffic with Gala sausages, to family prayers laced with spiritual warfare, and to the protagonist’s internal battles with “Daddy Hallelu” and the church’s expectations. These scenes contrast sharply with the sterile orderliness of England – its silent trains, overpriced McDonald’s (when converted to Nigerian Naira), and the quiet alienation of migrant life.

The prose swings quite effortlessly between poetic meditation and sharp observation, between sometimes letting herself flow in Yoruba and pidgin, and mostly in Queen’s English, never smoothing out the contradictions.

Akinla’s observations cut deep. There is a constant warning of a possibility of turning into “another thing” upon emigration abroad, a phrase that haunts the narrative. She captures how migration can feel like betrayal to those left behind, and how conformity can feel like self-erasure to those who leave.

Read Also: Rivers unveils measures to boost ease of doing business, restore investor confidence

The protagonist’s internal monologues are laced with metaphors that feel uniquely hers: the randy lizard “Dundee” which becomes a symbol of relentless pursuit of passion; migration as a “psychological dislocation” where one’s identity splits into warring Nigerian and English selves. When she describes “the Paper Dream” as a deity governing many migrants, she is naming something devastating yet real.

The supporting characters work as mirrors and also as warnings. Friends like Oriade devolve into strangers stuck in the rat race that comes with being a migrant in England influence. She transforms from a close, reliable confidante to someone willing to deceive her fiancé, and this becomes one of the book’s most painful threads. Arodan abandons his studies for marriage papers with an elderly white woman.

Osanle sees pregnancy as a visa strategy. All of these are manifestations of “the Paper Dream,” all asking the same questions: Should migrants prioritise emotional satisfaction or material comfort? Should they adapt or preserve their identity? Akinla does not preach or dictate. She merely shows the grind.

And that is the theme of this work – that interrogation of belonging and ambition. Throughout the work and embedded in all its subplots is the tension between “organic joy” (the raw, unpolished warmth of home) and the cold pragmatism of abroad. The funeral sequence, where grief and celebration compete for the same body, where Olanrewaju dances herself into exhaustion under her pastor’s disapproving gaze, is the book in miniature. Life does not pause for sorrow. Neither does the pressure to perform propriety, to meet expectations, to be what others need you to be.

The writing in this book is not always polished. The episodic structure, which jumps between taxi rides, funerals, and existential crises, can feel disjointed sometimes, with the flashbacks interrupting momentum. The pacing also varies: early chapters burst with energy and wit, while later sections slow into reflective poetry that borders on repetitive. Side characters also sometimes serve as colourful archetypes rather than fully fleshed-out individuals. At times, the protagonist’s voice veers into a kind of melodrama (dramatic confrontations with “Logic” or the “Future”), which could alienate readers seeking subtlety.

Yet these rough edges feel appropriate for a story about finding your voice while the ground shifts beneath you. This isn’t a writer performing confidence she doesn’t feel. It is a writer showing you the work of becoming. The quirks feel intentional, almost like the perfect imperfection which John Legend describes in his hit song, “All of You.” It demonstrates the raw, unpolished ambition of someone finding her footing, exactly like the story’s theme.

By the end, when Olanrewaju introduces herself by her real name instead of the aspirational “Shakespeare,” it lands quietly. There, we only see a woman who has stopped performing and started inhabiting her own skin. The final image, a Black woman writer wondering where she fits in an egg “white within, prize-gold at the centre,” asks questions this book wisely refuses to answer.

I Want to be a Writer will not be for everyone. It is too raw, too specific, too willing to show the parts of migration that promotional brochures ignore. But for readers tired of sanitised narratives, for anyone who has felt split between worlds, for those who understand that dreams do not die cleanly, this book speaks directly to you. It echoes works like Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s Americanah but with a more playful, introspective edge.

Akinla has written something rare. She has told a migration story that honours both the leaving and the loss, the ambition and its cost. And in the end, the protagonist is not a triumphant “Shakespeare,” but a resilient Olanrewaju, a Nigerian emigrant who is flawed, adaptable, and true to her roots. It is a reminder that thriving “wholly” means embracing the knots of identity without fully untying them. This is a debut that announces a writer worth watching, not despite its imperfections, but exactly because of them.

  • 2027: APC set for Kano comeback as stakeholders endorse Tinubu’s second term, Barau for governorship

2027: APC set for Kano comeback as stakeholders endorse Tinubu’s second term, Barau for governorship

    • By Ismail Mudashir

The All Progressives Congress (APC) is set to stage a comeback in Kano State, following the formal endorsement of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term and Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I. Jibrin, for the governorship race in the state by key stakeholders across the state.

Kano, once a stronghold of the APC, shifted to the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) during the last general election. In that cycle, the APC lost the governorship and all senatorial seats except the Kano North Senatorial District, which Senator Barau successfully retained.

Since the NNPP’s victory in 2023, the APC has remained in opposition in Kano, widely regarded as one of the country’s most influential voting blocs. Throughout this period, Senator Barau has served as the backbone of the party in the state. Recently, the former National Chairman of the APC, Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, hailed him as the “General of Nigerian Politics,” remarking that posterity would remember his contributions favourably.

As the 2027 general elections draw closer, APC stakeholders in Kano have begun reassessing their strategy to reclaim the state from what they describe as the NNPP’s misrule. Over the past four weeks, influential voices within the party have backed President Tinubu’s second-term bid and intensified calls for Senator Barau, who also serves as the First Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, to be adopted as the APC’s sole governorship candidate for 2027.

To these stakeholders, Senator Barau stands out as the only APC figure widely loved by the grassroots, respected by the elite, admired by youths and women, supported by clerics and academics, and embraced by the business community. To them, Senator Barau remains the true “People’s Senator”

Leading the pack of endorsements were former and serving members of the Kano State House of Assembly. A group of over 200 serving and former members of the Kano State House of Assembly, from 1999 to date, was led by a former speaker, Rt. Hon. Abdulaziz G. Gafasa (2007-2011) to the National Assembly, where they endorsed the second-term bid of President Tinubu and Senator Barau for the 2027 governorship election.

In the words of the lawmakers, through former speaker Gafasa to Senator Barau, “We are here to tell you that we are solidly behind you for three reasons. One, you have positively impacted the lives of our people across the three senatorial districts of Kano State. Secondly, you have been a lifeline to our party, APC. Thirdly, you have positively touched our lives, even though some of us are not from the same senatorial district as you. This has made you the most marketable candidate in APC.”

In the same vein, members of the forum of former Commissioners of Kano State, who served from 2019 to 2023 under Dr Ganduje, have also followed suit.

The former commissioners, who are grassroots politicians across the state, took turns to extol and commend the various interventions of Senator Barau in Kano State and beyond.

In the words of Dr Ali Musa Burum-Burum, if not for the intervention of the Deputy President of the Senate, the APC would have been in a state of comatose in Kano State.

Similarly, women leaders of the APC from 31 local government areas of the Kano Central and South Senatorial Districts also paid a solidarity visit to the Deputy President of the Senate at the National Assembly in Abuja.

Led by the Deputy Women Leader of the party in Kano State, Hajiya Sabuwa Salisu Takai, they expressed appreciation for the various developmental strides of Senator Barau in Kano State.

A week later, the former local government chairmen in Kano State adopted Senator Barau as the sole candidate of the APC for the 2027 governorship race in the state.

The former LG chairmen, who served between 2019 and 2022 during Ganduje’s tenure as governor of the state, adopted Senator Barau during a courtesy call to the National Assembly in Abuja.

A motion for the adoption of Senator Barau was moved by the former chairman of Rimin Gado Local Government Area, Barrister Dahiru Mannir Maigari, and seconded by the former chairman of the Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON) in the state, Hon. Baffa Mohammed Takai.
