Rivers State governor, Sir. Siminalayi Fubara, has hailed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s intervention in the political crisis that rocked the state last week saying it led to quick resolution of the matter.

Fubara in a statement he personally signed at the weekend titled, ‘Peace is Priceless’, described Tinubu’s role in the dispute as fatherly.

He said: “I wish to thank the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for his fatherly intervention which opened a series of communication channels to facilitate the timely resolution of the festering crisis. I wish to also thank our elders, who are currently intervening in the matter.”

Fubara, who described himself as a man of peace, said his roles in all the events were designed to ensure the stability and progress of the state.

Narrating the events, he said: “I consider it necessary to issue this press statement on the developments of the past few days in our dear state.

“Late on Sunday night, 29th October 2023, I was inundated with reports that the hallowed chamber of the Rivers State House of Assembly had been gutted by fire. The blaze was successfully put out by the fire service after which security agencies took control of the situation.

“My visit to the Assembly complex on Monday, 30th October 2023, was to assess the level of damage and undertake remedial measures to protect lives and property within the Assembly complex. I charged the security agencies to thoroughly investigate the incident and report to me.

“Shortly after, I got reports that the State House of Assembly had broken into two factions: one claiming to have impeached and suspended the house leader and three others preparatory to initiating an impeachment action against me, and the other rival faction impeaching the speaker and deputy speaker, thus sparking off some form of political crisis.

“Let me clearly state that my actions are aimed at restoring peace and stability in our state. I am a man of peace and as governor, the advancement of our state is my primary concern. Consequently, no sacrifice is too much for me to make to achieve this objective.”

The governor said it remained the collective responsibility of the Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Chief Nyesom Wike and himself to leverage their positions to advance the progress of the state.

He said: “Furthermore, it is the collective responsibility of the immediate past Governor and Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, His Excellency,  Chief Barrister, Ezenwo Nyesom Wike,  GSSRS, Life Bencher and my humble self, to leverage our positions and influences within and outside the state to advance the progress, security and well-being of our people.

“We must therefore not allow circumstances that could retard all efforts at achieving greatness for our people to prevail. On my part, I am  always willing and ready to embrace the path to lasting peace and tranquility with a commitment to consummating all efforts and initiatives by Mr. President and other well-meaning Nigerians, including my brother governors and the elders.

Fubara apologised to Rivers people over the tension that gripped the state describing it as regrettable.

He said: “I assure the good people and youths of Rivers State, that peace will certainly prevail and we shall continue to work together to advance the peace, security,  progress and development of our state.

“As governor, I sincerely apologise to the good people of Rivers State for the regrettable anxieties of the last few days, while thanking you all for your concerns, and continued support, love, and prayers”.

Meanwhile, the leaders of the Niger Delta yesterday  paid a solidarity visit to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike for further reconciliations between him and Governor Fubara.

A statement by Dr Kingsley Kuku yesterday, said  the Niger Delta leaders paid the visit to convey the region’s appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for including Wike in his cabinet and to congratulate the minister on his appointment.

On current political developments in Rivers, the leaders noted that the state was strategic to the South-South region and could not afford to be in crisis.

“As Lagos State is very dear to the South West, so is Rivers State to the Niger Delta. This is because as an injury to one is an injury to all, we feel justified to condemn the macabre dance playing out there.

“We join PANDEF, INC, IYC, MOSIEND, MOSOP, Ogbakor Ikwerre and all other responsible bodies in the Niger Delta in condemning the mischievous attempts at the State House of Assembly to impeach the State Governor on frivolous grounds of ‘gross misconduct’.

“It is quite unacceptable to us and to the entire Niger Delta. Any person, authority or group of persons involved in stoking this fire is strongly advised to desist from it and allow peace to reign,” the statement said.

The statement noted that as a political leader in Rivers, Wike wields the influence to broker peace as both the executive and legislature consist of his political proteges.

However, a   coalition of youths from Rivers State under the auspices of the Rivers Liberation Coalition of NGOs, has called on the Inspector-General of Police to redeploy the police officers including the state Commissioner of Police following their alleged complicity in the attack on the state Governor, Sir. Siminalayi Fubara.

Speaking in Port Harcourt at the weekend, the youths condemned the attempt to impeach the governor and said the police commissioner and Deputy Police Commissioner, Operations, should be shown their way out of the state.

The youths said they could no longer watch from the sidelines acts of intimidation against Governor Sir Siminalayi Fubara.

Impeachment: Ondo Speaker accuses Aiyedatiwa of ignoring APC peace moves

Speaker of the Ondo State House of Assembly, Hon Olamide Olajidi, has blamed the refusal of the Deputy Governor of the state, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, to withdraw cases in courts as a reason for the failure of the All Progressives Congress peace moves to materialise.

Speaker Olajidi said Ayedatiwa, was not ready for genuine reconciliation. Olajidi stated that the APC reconciliation committee headed by Alhaji Aminu Masari, in its bid to resolve the crisis, asked Aiyedatiwa to withdraw the court cases.

Speaking in Akure at the weekend, Speaker, Oladiji, said, “We met the National Chairman, and he specifically asked me how do we commence reconciliation. I told him that the reconciliation process has to start with the Deputy Governor. He is the one who took us to court, we cannot be reconciling ourselves when we have cases in court.

“Let him go to the court, withdraw all these cases, then we would know that we are now in for genuine reconciliation.

But the deputy governor has not done so. He has appealed some of the rulings of the lower court.

“As far as the House of Assembly is concerned, we are not doing anything. The cases are in the court and we would follow due process. We are following up the cases in the court.

On the division among the lawmakers, the Speaker said, “At times, when there is a political tussle like this, there can be insinuations, rumours, but in the House of Assembly, we are together. We told ourselves that it is an institution, and the institution must be protected. So, we are together”.

Aiyedatiwa had earlier said he remained committed to the ongoing reconciliation efforts of the National leadership of the APC.

Aiyedatiwa said, ” I affirm my commitment to the ongoing reconciliation efforts of the National leadership of our party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) on the political situation in our State which is already yielding the much-needed tranquility in the State.”

A 15-year-old Treasure Ayuba who escaped from his kidnappers’ den after over two years in captivity has been granted a six-year scholarship by the Restoration Bible Church in Kaduna.

Treasure was among about 121 students of the Baptist Academy, Kaduna, who were kidnapped on July 15, 2021, from the school in Kujama, on the outskirts of Kaduna.

After payment of a huge ransom, about 120 of the students were released by their abductors, while holding back Treasure who was said to be the youngest of all the students kidnapped.

He was brought to the Restoration Bible Church annual convention by the chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Kaduna, Rev Joseph Hayab.

The General Overseer of the Church, Rev. Tunde Bolata, who announced the scholarship for Treasure at the service to round off the Church convention, said he was free to start attending the Day Star Christian Academy owned by the Church with all expenses paid from Monday, November 6.

The CAN chairman told The Nation: “This is a miracle. I just brought him here for the Pastor to pray for him. This can only be a miracle and that is what true Christianity is all about.”

Hayab said Treasure informed him that the kidnappers gave him preferential treatment and often sent him on errands.

He said: “Treasure told me that whenever they are going for their operation, they leave him behind and when they come back, they often give him some money.

“He noticed that there are territories that they can go to. When it was time for him to leave, he headed towards that part. He just woke up one morning and decided to take a walk. He walked until he got to a village.

“He was careful not to tell anybody who he is. In the village, he asked how he could get a vehicle to Kaduna and he found one, entered the vehicle, paid N6, 000 and drove for seven hours before they got to Kawo (Kaduna metropolis).

“From there, he saw a vehicle going to Sabo and he entered the vehicle and immediately he got to Sabo, he knew how to get to his House. The family were sitting down when he walked in.”

How I used to hawk fruits in Lagos traffic – Singer Crayon

Mavin Records signee, Charles Chibuezechukwu Ojie, popularly known as Crayon, took a nostalgic trip down memory lane as he reflected on his path to fame and stardom.

In an interview with Punch Saturday Beats, he delved into his compelling journey, narrating his ‘From the Trench to Triumph Story’ in detail.

He emphasized that the album is the embodiment of his life’s struggles and eventual success.

According to him, at the tender age of seven, he and his family moved into a modest “face-me-I-face-you” apartment in Ojo, where approximately nine or ten family members shared a single room.

He said that as the eldest child in the family, he faced severe financial constraints throughout his childhood.

He added that while facing these adversities, he worked alongside his mother in the fruit market, sometimes even resorting to hawking fruits in Lagos traffic.

Crayon noted: “My ‘Trench to Triumph’ story is about where I come from, and how I got to where I am today. I was born in Orile Iganmu (Lagos) and when I was seven years old, we moved to a ‘face-me-I-face-you’ apartment in Ojo. We were about nine or 10 people sharing a room. I am the eldest child of my parents, and I faced a lot of financial struggles growing up. Money was very tight. I was sent home regularly from school due to unpaid fees, and I ended up taking the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination five times.

“During that time, I was working on my music, and helping my mum at the stall where she sold fruits in the market. Sometimes, I would even hawk the fruits in traffic. Going from that kind of life to being signed by Mavin Records, and on my way to becoming a global superstar, is my triumph. I used to be in the trenches and now I am triumphant.”

In the interview, Crayon also spoke on his experience meeting with the veteran actress, Ngozi Ezeonu, after singing a song that featured her name.

“First, I appreciate the marketing team at Mavin Records. We were going back and forth on ideas on how to push my song, ‘Ngozi’, and Ella, the head of marketing, suggested that should do something with Ngozi Ezeonu.

“So, I reached out to her management, later contacted her personally and shared the idea with her. She was really open to the idea. She is such a sweet soul. She actually knew the song, because her kids used to playing it in the house. I was so excited seeing her, and it was a full-circle moment for me, because I used to watch her in movies while growing up, and my mum is one of her biggest fans.

“When I showed my mum the video of my visit to her, she was quite excited as well. That visit was one of my best and funniest moments this year. When I posted the videos and pictures, some people even thought she was my mum.”
