Ancelotti will become Brazil coach in 2024

Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti will take charge of Brazil next summer, says the Brazilian Football Confederation president Ednaldo Rodrigues.

The five-time World Cup winners are confident the Italian will be in place for the Copa America in June 2024.

Rodrigues said Fernando Diniz will oversee the Selecao until then, alongside his role as Fluminense boss.

“He will come and make the transition in Brazil for Ancelotti,” Rodrigues said.

“His game plan is almost similar to that of the coach that will take over at Copa America, Ancelotti.

“We don’t call him an interim coach of the national team.”

The 64-year-old began his second spell at the Bernabeu in 2021, after leaving Everton, and has won the Champions League, La Liga, a Copa del Rey and the Club World Cup among a string of successes since his return.

The Champions League final win against Liverpool in 2022 was Ancelotti’s fourth European triumph as a manager, and second with Real Madrid, after also winning the competition twice with AC Milan.

Make family planning a legislative affair, AAFP tells FG

Association for the Advancement of Family Planning (AAFP) has urged Federal Government to make Family Planning (FP) budget (FP) a legislative affair.

Dr Ejike Oji, the Chairman, Technical Management Committee of AAFP, made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Wednesday.

Oji said that making family planning budget to pass through the annual legislation and appropriation would give it constitutional backing.

He added that “about one per cent of the annual budget for health should be set aside for family planning.

“There have been inconsistencies in the budget for family planning in the past, we need to make the funding a legislative affair for it to be sustained.”

Plateau workers will suspend strike if… – NLC Chairman

Plateau civil servants will suspend their on-going strike if government pays the balance of their February and March salaries, Mr Eugene Manji, NLC chapter chairman in the state said in Jos on Wednesday.

Plateau civil servants embarked on an indefinite strike on May 11 after government failed to meet their demands which included payment of salaries and other entitlements.

Manji told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the workers might resume work if government met their demands.

“We asked the administration of former Gov. Simon Lalong to pay civil servants that were yet to collect their February salaries and to pay March salary arrears, but it did not.

“This government came in and asked that we should give it time to consider our demands, but we are of the conviction that government is a continuum.

“It eventually agreed to pay, but not until after the verification of the actual civil service staff strength.

“If after the verification and we establish the willingness and commitment to pay, we will meet with the workers and consider the possibility of suspending the strike.

“We are monitoring the screening which started on Tuesday and if our members begin to receive their bank credit alerts as government promised, then we will summon a meeting,’’ he stressed.

Manji explained that government had promised that the verification would hold concurrently with payment.

He also told NAN that the NLC was aware that the House of Assembly gave Gov. Caleb Mutfwang the approval to secure a facility and clear the backlog of the salary arrears.

“We want to give government the benefit of the doubt and return to work after the payment of the one month arrears with the hope that it will pay for the remaining months.

“Should the government renege, we would be left with no choice but to resume the industrial action,’’ Manji said.

Oyo First Lady tasks widows on computer, digital literacy

Wife of Oyo Governor Mrs Tamunominini Makinde on Tuesday urged widows across the State to embrace computer and digital literacy for better living.

She said widows must take control of their lives by improving themselves through the acquisition of simple technological skills, basic computer skills and mobile phone transactions skills.

Speaking at a programme to mark this year’s International Widows Day at Oyo State Government House, Agodi, Ibadan, Mrs Makinde maintained that widows need to take advantage of technologies to improve their businesses, which would guarantee them financial independence.

She lamented that though widows face many challenges including economic vulnerability, social exclusion and a lot of inheritance rights which make it difficult for them to rebuild their lives after the death of their husbands, the State Government is committed to constantly empowering widows and seeking innovative solutions to help them overcome their challenges and enable them to live a better life.

She said: “In line with the 2023 theme, we plan to enhance women and widow computer literacy in our programmes through training programmes, show them how to operate POS machines and e payment platforms.”

“This training would make them conduct transactions effectively, keep part of their money, avoid fraud, computer literacy and digital platform that provides widows access to education, healthcare and financial resources.”

“Computer literacy can also give them the opportunity to access to legal services information which can help them to protect their inheritance and property right.”

  • Alleged certificate forgery: Court to hear NYSC’s objection in Gov. Mbah’s suit

Alleged certificate forgery: Court to hear NYSC’s objection in Gov. Mbah’s suit

A Federal High Court, Abuja, on Tuesday, fixed July 11 for hearing the preliminary objection filed by the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) against a suit by Gov. Peter Mbah of Enugu State.

Justice Inyang Ekwo, who fixed the date, also ordered the NYSC to file and serve their statement of defence within seven days of the order.

The development followed an oral application by the defendants’ lawyer, Aminu Sadauki, seeking for about a week to respond to Mbah’s substantive matter.

Justice Ekwo also warned journalists against being speculative in the report of the case instituted by Enugu governor against the youth scheme over alleged discharge certificate forgery.

The judge gave the warning after he struck out the motion for joinder filed by the Labour Party and its governorship candidate in the Enugu State poll, Jonathan Edeoga, which they later sought to withdraw.

“The problem I have in this kind of thing is that persons that have not been made parties will go and start addressing the media on speculative issue and the media will start writing things when they have not read the proceedings.

“I have always told the media that proceedings in this court are open to the media.

“It is only in this country that you see those that said they are practising journalism becoming agents,” he said.

He, therefore, warned media practitioners to stop being speculative on what the court did not say.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Mbah had sued the NYSC and its Director, Corps Certification, Mr Ibrahim Muhammad, for publishing a disclaimer, denying the issuance of a discharge certificate issued to him on Jan.6, 2003.

Justice Ekwo, on May 15, restrained the NYSC, Muhammad and any of their agents from, henceforth, engaging in such publication pending the hearing and determination of the substantive matter.

The order followed an ex parte motion moved by Mbah’s counsel, Mr Emeka Ozoani, SAN.

But the NYCS, in its preliminary objection dated May 19 and filed May 22, sought an order dismissing or striking out the suit for want of jurisdiction and competence.

Giving three grounds of argument, the corps said that Mbah did not appeal to the president as required by the provisions of Section 20 of the National Youth Service Corps Act, Cap N84, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004 before instituting the suit against the defendants.

It argued that appeal to the president was a condition-precedent to instituting an action against the defendants in any court of law in Nigeria.

According to the NYSC, consequent upon the refusal of the plaintiff/respondent to comply with the provisions of Section 20 of the National Youth Service Corps Act, this suit is premature for the jurisdiction of the court to crystalise.

The NYSC had, on Feb. 1, written a letter signed by Mr Ibrahim Muhammed saying that the NYSC certificate belonging to Mbah was not issued by the corps.

Mbah of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was declared the winner of the Enugu state governorship election held in March 18 by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
