Durban 2023 WTTC: Aruna leads African contingent to second round

Quadri Aruna is living up to the bill at the ongoing Durban 2023 WTTC as he led some other continental stars to the second round of the singles events in South Africa.

The Nigerian who will take on Spaniard Alvaro Robles in today’s match will be joined by 2023 Africa Cup champion, Omar Assar who is expected to face Kazakhstani Kirill Gerassimenko, while Assar’s Egyptian compatriot, Mohamed El-Beiali will confront Chinese Taipei’s sensation Li Jun-Yu.

African U-19 champion Taiwo Mati of Nigeria will confront his Hong Kong counterpart as the four surviving African players in the men’s singles.

In the women’s singles, three Africans still in the race are all Egyptians led by 2023 Africa Cup champion Hana Goda as well as her compatriots – Dina Meshref and Mariam Alhodaby who all prevailed over their opponents in the first round of the championships.

Meanwhile, Olajide Omotayo exited the tournament late on Sunday after a 4-2 loss to England’s Paul Drinkhall in the first round but the English man admitted that it was not an easy win for him against the Nigerian.

“I think when I played Omotayo at the Commonwealth Games, it was a bit easier for me to win but in Durban it was much harder because he has improved, and he played very well. We know ourselves and I was a bit more comfortable playing against him today,” Drinkhall admitted.

Also it was an emotional farewell for Cameroon’s Sarah Hanffou who narrowly lost to her German counterpart in the first round.

Despite going down 3-0, Hanffou fought back at 3-3 and was tied at 8-8 before being beaten at 11-8 in the seventh game to exit the tournament.

“It was a painful one for me having fought back well and I was a bit too nervous in the final game to lose the match. I am satisfied with my performance looking at where I was coming from and now I am sure I am coming up to where I was before,” Hanffou said.

Supreme Court rules Friday in PDP’s case seeking to void Tinubu/Shettima ticket

The Supreme Court has scheduled judgment for Friday, May 26 in the appeal by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) which is among others, seeking to void the joint ticket of the President-elect and Vice President-elect, Bola Tinubu and Kashim Shettima of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

A five-member panel of the court, headed by Justice John Okoro, chose the date after lawyers to parties adopted their processes and made final arguments.

Lawyers to the appellant, Joe Agim (SAN) prayed the court to allow the appeal and set aside the judgment of the Court of Appeal, which earlier affirmed the judgment by Justice Inyang Ekwo of the Federal High Court, where he queried the right of the PDP to question the candidate nomination process another party.

Lawyers to the respondents – the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Tinubu, Shettma and the APC – prayed the court to reject the appeal and affirm the concurrent findings of the two court below.

Babatunde Ogala (SAN), who appeared for the APC, urged the court to strike out the case since the 180 days allowed by the law to hear a pre-election case has elapsed.

The PDP had, in the suit filed on July 28, 2022, before the Federal High Court, Abuja, challenged the validity of the Tinubu/Shettima ticket for the 2023 presidential election.

The party argued among others,  that Shettima’s nomination as Tinubu’s running mate was in breach of the provisions of Sections 29(1), 33, 35 and 84{1)}(2)} of the Electoral Act, 2022 (as amended).

It claimed that Shettima had double nominations and argued that Shettima’s nomination as a vice-presidential candidate as well as the candidate for the Borno Central Senatorial seat, contravened the law

Justice Ekwo, in a Judgment on January 13  dismissed the suit on the grounds that the PDP was without the requisite locus standi to instituted the action.

The PDP appealed the decision in the appeal marked: CA/ABJ/CV/108/2023 and urged the appellate court to reverse the judgment of the Federal High Court, Abuja.

In the unanimous judgment on March 25, a three-member panel of the Court of Appeal held that the PDP failed to establish its locus standi.

Justice James Abundaga, who read the lead judgment,  agreed with the submissions of lawyers to the respondents, including Thomas Ojo from the law firm of Prince Lateef Fagbemi and described the PDP as a busy body, which dabbled into issues that constitute the internal affairs of the APC.

Justice Abundaga held that the trial court was right to have held that the PDP failed to establish its locus standi.

“The appellant, having failed to disclose its locus standi, this appeal fails and it is hereby dismissed,” he said and proceeded to affirm the judgment of the Federal High Court.

Justice Abundaga awarded N5 million cost against the appellant’s lawyer, J. O. Olotu.

10th NASS leadership must not be divisive tool– CAN

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) Kaduna State Chapter, has advised the incoming Leadership of the 10th National Assembly (NASS) not to be a divisive tool.

The Chairman CAN, Kaduna state, Rev. John Hayab gave the advice in a statement  on Monday in Kaduna.

Hayab said he had been following the  development in the leadership race for the 10th national assembly  with dismay and wished to counsel all interested persons not to allow their quest to divide Nigerians along ethnic, regional, or religious lines.

He explained that CAN believed that Nigeria’s elected representatives, both from the upper and lower chambers, were politically matured and responsible enough to do what would make Nigeria great by choosing competent leaders.

However, some inciting messages now going round could create unnecessary tension and disunity among Nigerians.

“CAN as a body has earlier advocated for fairness before the general elections and believes strongly that a fair and just Nigeria is beneficial to Nigeria’s unity and growth.

“CAN, therefore, appeals to the political class to discontinue any action that can  further divide Nigerians, rather, the elected representatives need to promote matters that can support the citizenry to attain the goals of a unified nation.”

He said those who eventually became leaders of the national assembly must be lawmakers who would guide their colleagues to make laws for the common good of the country, not as representatives of their regional or religious enclaves.

According to him, to attain a cohesive nation, CAN will pray and work for the unity, peace, and progress of Nigeria and  speak truth to power.

“CAN strongly appeals to the political class to consider the entire country as their most important constituency, instead of promoting primordial sentiments,” Hayab said.

INEC told to shun irregularities, corruption

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has been urged to be transparent and avoid irregularities as electoral umpires.

This was the high point of a communique at South West Regional People’s Public Hearing on the impact of violence and corruption in 2023 elections with the theme ”Gender integrity and accountability.”

The coalition, led by the Women Advocates Research and Documentation Centre (WARDC) in collaboration with Women’s Rights Advancement and Protection Alternative (WRAPA) and supported by the Macarthur Foundation in conjunction with National Coalition on Affirmative Action (NCAA), Women in Politics Forum, GECORN, 100 Women Lobby Group, Gender Technical Unit and Womanifesto, lamented the under-representation of women in politics in elective and appointive positions despite the consistent push for increased representation during a public hearing it organised on the 2023 elections.

The conference, according to the Program Manager, Women Advocates Research and Documentation Centre (WARDC) Mrs. Mary George- Peluola was aimed at improving transparency and Accountability during and after elections and provide a platform for women and other partners to share their cutting-edge experiences on the Impact of the election on women and other vulnerable groups with a view to re-strategize on gender balance and election integrity

The group observed that at the regional level, Southwest had the lowest turnout of voters.

With cases of late arrival of voting materials and INEC officials, voter suppression, violent attacks on women, which led to deaths in some cases and disenfranchisement of the electorate, the group said the irregularities observed in the last elections underscored the need for a road map for future elections in Nigeria.

Speaking about Women’s role in the last elections and how violence affected them, Executive Director Women For Peace and Gender Equality Initiative Dr Mojisola Akinsanya, said: “Prior to the election, there is a lot of structural barriers, post COVID-19 and recovering from that there is a lot of socio-economic issues which women are battling with.

”Hence, from the beginning, govt failed to address the plight of the people before the election, (the cash crunch, fuel crisis etc) harsh policies, discrimination, ethnic profiling, threats, hate speech intimidation etc. govt. used these weapons to limit a lot of women from participating effectively in the general elections.

”There is a problem with our selection process. Women’s participation is low because we are not adequately represented in the major political parties. The judiciary was also compromised” she said.

“We are demanding for policy framework insisting on a particular number of women to be included, if Liberia and Rwanda is doing it, why should our own be different?”

Coordinator and Founder, Visionspring Initiative, Ngozi Nwosu-Juba, said the general elections saw more women losing their seats, saying that it was a low scorecard for women.

On what women intend to do differently ahead of the 2027 elections, Executive Director, Women’s Rights and Health Projects, Bose Ironsi said: “Moving forward as women, ahead of the next election,  there is still going to be high level of advocacy, we’ll mobilise more women, (increase in number) and more of lobbying We are not fighting with our male counterpart, we just want them to understand that women need to be part of governance, we are not discouraged at all.”

Court strikes out NNPP’s petition against Senator-elect

The Ondo State Election Petition Tribunal on Monday struck out a petition filed by the New Nigeria Peoples  Party (NNPP) against the Senator-elect in the Ondo North Senatorial District, Pastor Jide Ipinsigba.

Ruling on the case, Mrs Rose Soji, the Chairman of the tribunal, said “ the motion on notice filed by the first petitioner, the New Nigeria Peoples  Party ( NNPP) praying the tribunal to withdraw the petition is granted as prayed.

“ The petition is hereby dismissed,” she said.

Earlier, the NNPP’s counsel, Mr Segun Ogodo, had applied to withdraw the case and told  the tribunal of his client’s interest to discontinue the petition.

“ The party which is NNPP that I’m representing has shown interest to withdraw the petition against the respondents, Pastor Ipinsigba, the All Progressives Congress (APC) and INEC and accordingly the court has granted the application.

“ The second petitioner, Mr Phillip Alonge, earlier on  also brought application to discontinue the petition but he had no appearance in court today and  the petition literarily appears to be abandoned.

If the second petitioner does not appear in person in court at the next adjourned date, the court has discretion to do what it likes and it may strike out the petition,” he stated.

The respondent’s counsel, Mr Moradele  Oke, said that he would not  oppose the application.

“ This should be the fourth  proceeding that we would be appearing. The first petitioner’s application has been granted and the second petitioner has also filed an application to withdraw further presence in the case and the tribunal took a careful examination on the process and duly struck out the name of the first petitioner.

“ The implication is that the petition subsists because second petitioner is still on record and he has liberty to be given hearing,” he said.

The tribunal, therefore, adjourned the case to May 24 for continuation of hearing on the second petition.
