NIMR detects new severe malaria vector

The Nigeria Institute of Medical Research (NIMR) has discovered a new malaria vector named Anopheles stephensi in the north.

Director General of the Institute, Professor Babatunde Salako, told newsmen in Lagos during his 63rd birthday ceremony that the discovery was one of NIMR’s recent research discoveries.

The vector, according to him, spreads malaria called plasmodium falciparum.

He described the vector as a rugged one that is very difficult to eradicate.

“This has implication for malaria control in Nigeria because hitherto, the vector was known in West Africa sub-region,” he said.

Salako further disclosed that the Institute is looking at vaccine development as a lot of studies have been done.

The Institute, Salako pointed out, is working with five groups in a consortium to develop local vaccines in Nigeria.

He explained that development of vaccine, which the institute is into, is different from vaccine production.

The idea behind the vaccine development, he said, is to ensure that Nigerian researchers are able to learn the development process from the beginning to the end.

“This is important so that when we have a new epidemic or disease, known or unknown, it would be possible for Nigeria to develop its own vaccine,” Salako added.

He further disclosed that the institute is working on testing 2,000 people in Nigeria with a view to knowing whether the three COVID-19 vaccines evoked a response or not and also also to know how long it can be effective in their bodies.

“The essence of this is to know the effectiveness, side effects and responsiveness of human body to COVID-19 vaccines,” he said.

Anopheles stephensi is a primary mosquito vector of malaria in urban India and is included in the same subgenus as Anopheles gambiae, the primary malaria vector in Africa.

It is a highly competent vector of Plasmodium Falciparum and P. Vivax, considered an efficient vector of urban malaria.e Anopheles stephensi mosquito has long since been considered an Asian malaria vector. It is native to parts of South-East Asia and parts of the Arabian Peninsula

AIDS 2022: Recent cure cases hope for people living with HIV

President-elect of the International AIDS Society (IAS), Sharon Lewin, has noted recent cure cases provide continued hope for people living with HIV and inspiration for the scientific community.

Lewin said this following the presentation of two recent cure cases at a press conference tagged “Scientific Highlights” on Wednesday.

The press conference highlighted six studies selected from thousands of abstracts being presented at the 24th International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2022) over the next week in Montréal and virtually.

Data presented by Jana Dickter of City of Hope shows a stem-cell transplant recipient (unnamed) has become the fourth known adult case of HIV cure.

A researcher at the Hospital Clínic-IDIBAPS/University of Barcelona, Núria Climent, presented an analysis of a 59-year-old woman with sexually acquired HIV enrolled in the “Immune-mediated PHI trial” who has maintained an undetectable viral load for more than 15 years without ART.

Lewin, who doubles as Director of The Peter Doherty Institute for Infection and Immunity, said: “A cure remains the Holy Grail of HIV research.

“We have seen a handful of individual cure cases before, and the two presented today provide continued hope for people living with HIV and inspiration for the scientific community.

“What’s more, we are now seeing an advance in the great challenge of finding a biomarker for the HIV reservoir – a truly exciting development.”

Co-principal investigator Annie Luetkemeyer, Professor of Medicine, Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital at University of California, San Francisco, noted that doxycycline taken after sex is a promising prevention strategy for populations disproportionately impacted by high rates of STIs.

Presenter Madisa Mine of the Botswana Ministry of Health and Wellness explained Botswana has become one of the very few countries to surpass the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) 95-95-95 targets.

The survey found that 95.1% of people living with HIV in Botswana were aware of their status, nearly all (98%) of those aware of their status were on antiretroviral therapy, and 97.9% of those on ART achieved viral suppression.

Mine noted that the country is well-positioned to end its HIV epidemic by 2030 despite the fact that approximately one in five adults in Botswana are living with HIV.

“The results from this large-scale survey of Botswana’s progress are truly breath-taking,” Lewin said.

“This important milestone demonstrates exactly what evidence-based policies can deliver.”

NYSC swears in 1301 corps members, promotes four staff

A total of 1,301 corps members deployed to Anambra State for their one-year national service have taken the oath of allegiance at the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Orientation camp in Umuawulu/Mbaukwu Local Government Area of the state.

Four member staff of the scheme also received their promotion letters during the event following their excellent performances and hard work in their respective fields.

Addressing the 2022 Batch ‘B’ Stream 2 corps members, State Coordinator, Mrs. Blessing Iruma said the 3-week orientation course was a time their different leadership qualities would be tested, urging them to endeavour to give accurate accounts of themselves and their backgrounds.

She said: “The corps members, comprising 677 females and 624 males have been kitted and accommodated in line with COVID-19 protocols and are already adjusting fast to the camp life. It is our expectation that you will sustain the tempo.

“We also do hope that you will translate your talents into practical terms by contributing meaningfully in the different committees and activities you will be co-opted into.”

Iruma further appreciated overwhelming hospitality of the people of the state, pledging increased partnership with them in augmenting the manpower resource needed in both the education and health sectors of the state.

She however reminded corps employers of the statutory allowances meant for corps members in lieu of transport and accommodation, stressing that such welfare packages served as motivation to them.

Congratulating the newly promoted staff, Iruma described the feat as a moral booster, urging them to redouble their efforts to prove they really merited it.

“Recognition serves as morale booster, productivity level must improve to show you didn’t attain the position with kid gloves,” she added.

The promoted staff were Chioke Iloabachie, Sylvester Chukwu, Okechukwu Elizabeth and Ejianya Ebubechukwu.

Nigerian-owned firm gets $2.5m to study babies’ cries

A firm, Ubenwa, has received $2.5 million in funding to help parents and clinicians understand an infant’s cry.

Ubenwa, which is based in Montreal, Canada, was co-founded by its Nigerian Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Charles Onu.

The firm is a pioneering developer of diagnostic software for the rapid detection of medical anomalies in infant cry sounds.

In a statement, Onu said: “Ubenwa is building a diagnostic tool that understands when a baby’s cry is a cry for medical attention.

“Ultimately, our goal is to be a translator for baby cry sounds, providing a non-invasive way to monitor medical conditions everywhere you find a baby: delivery rooms, neonatal and paediatric intensive care units, nurseries, and in the home.”

He explained that the technology is based on a foundation of scientific research developed in close collaboration with Montreal’s AI research institute, Mila, and six hospitals in three countries, including Montreal Children’s Hospital, Enugu State University Teaching Hospital in Nigeria, Rivers State Teaching Hospital in Nigeria and Santa Casa de Misericordia in Brazil.

The company is said to have the largest and most diverse clinically annotated database of infant cry sounds, an essential asset for the development of audio-based biomarkers.

Ubenwa said it received the funding through an announcement of pre-seed financing that attracted top AI venture funds and researchers, AI-focused Radical Ventures and AI pioneer Yoshua Bengio.

Radical Ventures led the round, which included participation from returning investor AIX Ventures, a fund co-founded by AI researchers and entrepreneurs Pieter Abbeel and Richard Socher.

Ubenwa is backed by Radical Ventures and AI luminary Yoshua Bengio.
The firm is partnering with leading children’s hospitals to detect medical anomalies in baby cries.

As a spinout from Mila, Ubenwa is working with Montreal Children’s Hospital and paediatric hospital networks around the world, to build a platform for sound-based diagnostic tools, combining groundbreaking AI research and clinical insights.

“For both clinicians and parents, an infant’s cry is difficult to diagnose. Babies cry for several reasons such as when they are hungry, exhausted or have colic. However, a baby’s cry can also be a signal that more urgent care is required. Delayed diagnosis may lead to severe, long-lasting effects or fatality.

“Ubenwa has developed accurate algorithms for cry activity tracking, acoustic biomarker detection and anomaly prediction, turning infant cries into clinically relevant insights and potential diagnoses.

The company’s first pilot on detecting neurological injury due to birth asphyxia showed about 40 per cent improvement over APGAR scoring, the most common physical exam at birth.”

“Cry analysis has the potential to provide critical information for identifying babies with evolving brain problems,” said Dr Guilherme Sant’Anna, Neonatologist at Montreal Children’s Hospital and Professor at McGill University.

“A non-invasive diagnostic tool of this nature would be a powerful clinical resource for paediatric medicine. We are thrilled to be collaborating with Ubenwa and realise this through well-controlled clinical studies.”

Turing award winner Yoshua Bengio also invested in Ubenwa alongside Google Brain’s Hugo Larochelle and Marc Bellemare.

An investor with Radical Ventures, Sanjana Basu said Ubenwa, which is supported by a strong clinical foundation, developed a proprietary innovation for an underserved and important market.

Adding that deciphering a baby’s cry using machine learning can open up a range of possibilities in the consumer and clinical paediatrics market where demand for better digital products is only growing.

EU court confirms broadcasting ban on Russia

The European Court of Justice (ECJ) rejected a request by Russian news network RT France to lift a broadcasting ban imposed by the European Union (EU) on Russia over the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

“The EU General Court dismisses Russia Today France’s application for annulment of the EU Council’s acts,’’ the ECJ said on Twitter on Wednesday.

Following the outbreak of the Russia-Ukraine conflict on Feb. 24, 2022, the EU Council adopted several sets of sanctions against Russia.

These sanctions include broadcasting bans in the EU targeting Russian media that the EU considers disinformation, including RT France.

These bans were effective since March 2, and RT France went to court to contest them on March 8.

However, RT France asked for the annulment of the Council’s sanctions, arguing that the decision goes against freedom of speech and information, the right to defend oneself, freedom of entrepreneurship, and the principle of non-discrimination based on one’s nationality.

Meanwhile, the ECJ ruled against RT France, saying that the ban was a “proportionate’’ measure, and “necessary to the aims pursued.’’

It also ruled that RT France’s freedom of entrepreneurship is not harmed, as the measures were temporary and reversible.
