Police kill suspected kidnapper, arrest armed robbers, recover weapons in Delta

The Delta State Police Command has confirmed the death of a suspected kidnapper as he and his gang members engaged police operatives in a gun duel in Obiaruku area of the state.

The command also confirmed the arrest of some suspected armed robbers and cultists as well as the recovery of some arms and ammunition.

Spokesman for the command SP Bright Edafe said in a statement on Tuesday that on December 1, 2025, operatives of the Command’s State Anti-Cult Unit (SACU), in collaboration with community volunteers, were on intensive patrol when they received credible intelligence that suspected kidnappers were mobilising within the Obiaruku forest to carry out a deadly attack.

He said acting swiftly on the information, the operatives advanced towards the location to forestall the planned criminal activity.

Edafe said on approaching the area, the suspects opened fire from multiple directions in a bid to repel the team.

He noted that the operatives responded with superior firepower, leading to the death of one suspect, while others escaped into the forest with various degrees of injuries.

“One AK-47 rifle with forty-two (42) rounds of live ammunition, nine mobile phones, and charms were recovered,” Edafe said.

In another development, the spokesman said operatives of the CP-Special Assignment Team (CP-SAT), led by the Commander, ASP Julius Robinson, recorded a series of coordinated breakthroughs between November 28 and 29, 2025 in ongoing efforts to dismantle criminal networks linked to theft, armed violence, and cult-related activities across Ughelli, Oghara, and Sapele.

He said the police operatives, acting on credible intelligence, around the Ekuigbo axis, intercepted one of the syndicate’s key actors, Kelvin Oke, male, 42, and recovered a stolen tricycle in his possession.

He said more coordinated operations led to the arrest of two additional suspects: Victor Oyaye, male, 26, of Otor-Ogor community, identified as the gang leader, and Monday Emakpo, male, 31, of Okpara community, residing in Agbara, Ughelli.

Edafe said another stolen tricycle and a locally-made shotgun loaded with six live cartridges were recovered.

Building on this momentum, he stated that CP-SAT sustained the offensive into the Oghara–Sapele axis and on 29th November 2025, acting on further intelligence, operatives stormed the residence of one Jeffery Saint, male, 28, of Ogharake, Oghara.

He stated, “The suspect attempted to evade arrest but was swiftly restrained.

“A meticulous search of the premises led to the recovery of a locally fabricated Beretta pistol and fifteen (15) rounds of live ammunition, which were concealed and ready for criminal deployment.”

Also, in another feat on 29 November 2025, Edafe said operatives of the Eagle Net Special Squad, under the command of SP Danyaya Inusa, were conducting a routine stop-and-search operation around the Northwest Filling Station by Mariam Babangida Junction along the Asaba–Benin Expressway when a seemingly ordinary traffic check turned into a dramatic chase.

Edafe said, “The officers closed in quickly and apprehended the fleeing suspect, who was later identified as Ezekiel Edeya, male, 28, of Emevo in Isoko North LGA.

“A thorough search was conducted, leading to the recovery of a red hand bag he had attempted to discard. Inside the bag were one locally fabricated pistol, three live cartridges, an iron plier, and one screwdriver. Suspects are in custody and investigation is ongoing.”

Meanwhile, CP Olufemi Abaniwonda has commended the operatives for their gallantry and appreciated stakeholders for trusting the police with information in crime fighting.

  • Contractors shut down finance ministry over N500bn debt

Contractors shut down finance ministry over N500bn debt

Activities at the Federal Ministry of Finance headquarters were brought to a standstill today as members of the Indigenous Contractors Association of Nigeria (ICAN) blocked the main entrance, protesting the government’s prolonged non-payment for completed projects.

The large-scale demonstration severely affected movement around the ministry, restricting vehicular traffic to a single lane.

Contractors were observed at the gate bearing various placards and chanting songs, with one sign reading, “Don’t pay 2025 until you finish paying the 2024 budget that has been completed amongst several others.”

The association is demanding the immediate settlement of debts, which they claim stand at over N500 billion owed to indigenous contractors across the country.

Speaking to journalists amid the protest, Mr. Babatunde Seun Oyeniyi, General Secretary of the Association, stated unequivocally that the contractors would not cease their action until the Federal Government met their demands.

Mr. Oyeniyi narrated the history of their engagement with the government, which included a previous three-day protest from November 4th to 6th that was called off after the National Assembly intervened.

“After the National Assembly intervened, they told us that they will sit the minister down over this matter. And we immediately stopped the protest,” Oyeniyi said.

He revealed that despite multiple follow-up meetings with the Minister of Finance, their payment status remained unresolved.

“They have not responded to our request,” Oyeniyi confirmed, adding, “In fact, more than six times we have come here. Last week, we were here throughout the night before the Minister of Finance came.”

The General Secretary explained that the contractors were led to believe that a partial payment was imminent.

“Even from the last conversation we had, we even told him, OK, for now, you said you have up to N150 billion to pay all indigenous contractors. We don’t know why it is causing delays.”

However, Oyeniyi maintains that while some warrants may have been issued, the actual funds are yet to be disbursed. “Specifically, when we collate, they are owing more than N500 billion for all indigenous contractors. We only see warrants, there is no cash back.”

The main fear driving the renewed protest is the possibility of being deferred to the next fiscal year.

“The problem is that they want to put us into a backlog. They want to shift us to 2026, that 2026 they are going to pay,” Oyeniyi alleged. “They will turn us into debt, and we don’t want that. We won’t leave here until we are paid,” he concluded.

The Minister of Finance has reportedly referred the contractors back to the National Assembly concerning the resolution of the matter.

As of press time, the blockade was ongoing, with no immediate response from the Ministry of Finance regarding the contractors’ demands.

Nigeria’s digital economy takes centre stage at digital growth summit

Nigeria’s business landscape is embracing the digital revolution, with industry experts and thought leaders gathering at the Digital Growth Summit to discuss the future of digital marketing in the country.

The summit, held in collaboration with Intense Group and Leadway Group, highlighted the importance of digital transformation, data-driven decision-making, and customer-centric strategies in driving business growth across various sectors.

Leye Makanjuola, CEO of Intense Group, emphasized the need for businesses to be data-focused.

“The biggest mistake is not being data-focused… You need to know how much you’re putting into it and how much you expect digital to bring out of that experiment or out of that campaign.”

Makanjuola also stressed the importance of partnership between businesses and agencies to achieve revenue generation goals.

“You can’t do it alone, especially when it comes to revenue generation. It has to be a partnership where you have the marketing team or the data team on the client side partnering with the agency side to achieve these goals.”

Femi Adebayo, Executive Director of Leadway Pensions, highlighted the importance of digital transformation in the financial services industry.

“The digital side of the digital transformation today is an area that is very critical to our own aspirations… We need to take advantage of digital platforms to capture people’s attention and turn it into purchase decisions.”

Adebayo added that digital transformation is essential for reaching a larger audience and acquiring new customers.

“Our aspiration is to, first, manage the customers that we have, grow capacity, grow in terms of penetration, and also be able to acquire a lot more customers. And the biggest reach is digital.”

Diana Mulili, Head of Digital Business at Leadway Holdings Group, discussed the company’s digital roadmap.

“We believe technology will play a big role in driving the future in terms of engagement with customers… We’re aligning with the likes of Intense on a digital roadmap, such that we can fully integrate into a process where people can assess product service lines via digital platform ease of doing business, ease of access.”

Mulili emphasized the importance of leveraging brand equity to drive awareness and conversion across subsidiaries.

“The strategic shift will be looking at leveraging the brand equity Leadway Assurance has… How can we help the other leverage on that brand so that they can also drive their own awareness in the market and eventually acquire more customers for their products and services.”

Ikeh Chidi, Creative Director at Intense, emphasized the importance of building trust through storytelling and engagement.

“We must be able to view that trust in the mind of the target audience and the best way to do it is to be present to the audience in real-time, where culture is being shaped.” Chidi added that signals and data maturity are critical for driving business growth.

“Signals are everywhere… How can we now begin to consolidate this data, especially as we go into 2026, to ensure that we can begin to build on those signal points?”

Timilehin Oyedeji, Senior Client Partner at Aleph, highlighted the growing digital opportunity in Nigeria.

“The honest truth is Nigeria has over 220 million people with internet penetration of over 50%… That is a huge opportunity for any brand playing in the financial service space to do two things: Create awareness and acquire customers and also build relationships and drive retention.”

Oyedeji also shared common mistakes businesses make when trying to drive digital growth.

“Develop a good product, understand your target market, leverage touch points where your target audience spends time, and make conversion points seamless… Serious-minded brands don’t make those mistakes.”

When asked about the most effective way to grab attention, Mulili said, “From our experience, we’ve seen that when you create relatable content that has stories people can relate to, that’s when we grab people’s attention… We’ve shortened the distance between us and our customers with that.”

Oyedeji also emphasized the importance of personalization in customer engagement.

“You need to understand your target audience and profile your target market segments based on your offerings… Make conversion points seamless.”

The summit concluded that the future of digital marketing in Nigeria’s financial sector lies in leveraging data analytics, customer-centric design, and automation to drive business growth and revenue. With the right strategies and investments, Nigerian businesses can unlock new opportunities and drive growth in the digital age.

Makanjuola emphasised the importance of digital adoption for business growth.

“We feel like there’s a lot of market opportunity. It just takes a lot of hard work and persistence, and obviously a lot of strategic movements and smart thinking… We are going to double down on investment in data, technology, and media.”

Adebayo also noted that technology is a front burner in the direction of the company.

“Technology for Leadway is very essential… We believe technology will play a big role in driving the future in terms of engagement with customers alike.”

The Digital Growth Summit highlighted the need for Nigerian businesses to adopt digital strategies to drive growth and revenue. With the right investments and partnerships, Nigerian businesses can unlock new opportunities and drive growth in the digital age.
