This year’s SLS with the “Born in Blackness: Truth, Lies and X” was a discourse event that spotlighted how Nigerians and Africans, got to where they are in the way they think; and the shift in thinking required to start taking tomorrow back today.

https://ssl.gstatic.com/ui/v1/icons/mail/images/cleardot.gifChief Marketing Officer (CMO) of Sterling Bank, Dapo Martins said: “The Sterling Leadership Series is a platform to bring together a diverse group of opinion leaders and global thinkers to share their views and experiences to shape perspectives on key issues, and inspire others to contribute to the reimagining of a more stable socio-political environment in Nigeria in particular, and the African continent in general.”

Speaking on the inspiration for this year’s theme, Martins said: “As a people, we tend to focus on today as our major challenge,” noting that, “Most Gen X, Millennials and Gen Zs are out of sync with history because the few that are informed have an easy tendency to neglect the actual reasons behind today’s actions, and are conditioned to quickly forget the past. This creates a worrisome loop in which we are set to repeat history’s mistakes, time and time again.”

Court sacks APGA’s Anambra South senatorial candidate

A Federal High Court in Abuja has voided the nomination of a House of Representatives member, Chris Azubogu as the senatorial candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) for Anambra South Senatorial District.

Azubogu represents Nnewi North/ Nnewi South/ Ekwusigo Federal Constituency on the platform of the PDP.

Justice Inyang Ekwo, in a judgment on Thursday, held that Azubogu was still a member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) when, in June this year, he participated in the primary election held by APGA for Anambra South Senatorial District.

Justice Ekwo ordered that Ben Nwankwo’s name be submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as the lawful candidate of APGA for the senatorial district.

He restrained Azubogu from further parading himself as APGA’s candidate for the senatorial district.

The judgment was on the suit marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/909/2022 filed by Nwankwo, who argued among others, that Azubogu was unlawful nominated.

Justice Ekwo held that Azubogu violated the provisions of sections 65 and 68 of the Constitution.

The judge upheld the plaintiff’s contention that Azubogu ought to have resign, defect or cross carpet from PDP to APGA before he could lawfully qualify to participate in the primary of another political party.

Justice Ekwo held that Azubogu ought to have relinquished the seat if he had actually resigned his membership, defected from PDP to APGA or another political party .

He further held that without complying with mandatory provisions of Sections 65 and 68 of the 1999 Constitution and Article 27 of the APGA guidelines for primary election for 2022, there was no way Azubogu could have lawfully participated in any primary election of any party other than that of the PDP.

Justice Ekwo found that as of June 1, 2022 when APGA conducted its primary election Azubogu was not qualified to participate.
He held that any action taken in contravention or breach of the 1999 Constitution is unconstitutional, null and void, adding that Azubogu, having not been a member of APGA at the time he purportedly stood for the primary election of the party cannot be lawfully nominated by APGA.

In another judgment on Thursday, Justice Ekwo reversed the unlawful substitution of Chukwuma Amadi as the candidate of the Labour Party (LP) for Enugu West Senatorial District.

The judge held that Amadi remains the candidate of the party unless he either withdraws his candidacy or in the event of death.

The judgment was on the suit marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/1194/2022 filed by Amadi to challenge his purported substitution by the LP.

Justice Ekwo ordered the removal of Uchenna Ekwe, who was unlawfully nominated by the party in the place of Amadi.

Justice Ekwo invoked sections 29, 31,32, 33 and 34 of the Electoral Act to nullify the substitution of the plaintiff.

The judge held that by the provisions of Section 33 of the Electoral Act, 2022, political parties are not allowed to change or substitute their candidates, whose names have been submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission ( INEC) under Section 29 of the Act, except in the case of death or withdrawal by the candidate.

Ex-Kwara Deputy Speaker, others defect to APC

Scores of members of opposition political parties in Kwara have defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). The defectors were led by dozens of erstwhile generals in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Social Democratic Party, New Nigerian Party (NNPP) and African Democratic Congress (ADC). Leading the pack of the defectors are former Kwara Deputy Speaker Hon. Mathew Okedare; former Commissioner for Tertiary Education under PDP Barrister Abdullahi Alikinla; former Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology Engr Musa Yeketi; Personal Assistant to former Governor Abdulfatah Ahmed on Political (PAPOL) Alhaji Hassan Gegele; PDP women leader in Ifelodun LG Adenike Ayilara; former Special Assistant to Senator Bukola Saraki on Domestic Hon. Bolakale Ajanaku; Otunba Olabode Oyedepo popularly called Bode Deway; SDP House of Assembly aspirant from Offa Mr. Ahmed Akorede; PDP House of Rep aspirant for Asa/Ilorin West Hon. Ahmed Bayero; YPP Vice Chairman in Asa Hamzat Dolapo; Abu Jimoh Plumber; Bola Afolayan from Ekiti LG; and Alhaji Abdullahi Sarumi, among others.

They attested to the impressive performance of the Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s administration in education, healthcare, workers’ welfare, rural-urban infrastructural development, women and youth empowerment, and safety nets for the poor and the vulnerable.

AbdulRazaq with several top government officials and party chieftains such as Kwara APC chairman Sunday Fagbemi; and Director General of the APC Campaign Alhaji Yahaya Seriki, received the defectors.

Welcoming the defectors, AbdulRazaq congratulated the new members of APC for their decision and assured them of fairness and equal treatment.

“We welcome all the decampees and appreciate you for your conviction and your trust in our party. We are going to work together to achieve success. We will treat you all fairly as members of our party. As you can see, PDP is now empty. They only deploy social media to feign popularity,” he said.

“They came up with a slogan – ‘O Suwa’ (We are fed up). They are truly shameless for comparing their 16 years to our three and a half years in office. They boast of constructing a fly-over bridge at the post office. They are liars. They never told Kwarans that the Federal government funded the project.

”The same thing applies to Ilesha Baruba Chikanda road construction and the Airport. We are building huge projects with our own money as an administration while delivering  basic amenities to our people, including workers’ welfare. ”We cannot entrust the future of our state to those who once ruined a bank. They will destroy our state, if we make that mistake. Let them know that you’re not tired of good government and steady spread of infrastructure across the state,” the Governor told the mammoth crowd.

AbdulRazaq mentioned some of his administration’s scorecards across sectors and enjoined the participants to remain resolute to deliver
the State for APC at the polls. Prince Fagbemi, on his part, said Kwarans have all seen the huge gap between the past and present administrations in terms of inclusive
growth and good governance, and have vowed never to allow the State togo backward.

He said the comeback bid of PDP was targeted at denying the citizens what they are already enjoying under AbdulRazaq, restating the government’s scorecards across sectors.

Vote your conscience in 2023, says CAN

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has advised Nigerians to vote their conscience in the 2023 presidential poll.

CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, gave the advice while commending presidential candidates at the just-concluded interactive session at the Ecumenical Centre, Abuja.

Okoh emphasised the engagement with the 2023 presidential candidates was neither a campaign programme nor an endorsement event.

He urged the presidential candidates to keep to the promises made to CAN and Nigerians to ensure that they walk towards peace and security in the country.

The statement on Thursday in Abuja by Okoh said: “On behalf of the national leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, I sincerely commend the presidential candidates that honoured our invitation to the just-concluded interactive session with a view to discussing issues that will promote the common good of every citizen of Nigeria.

“We urge all Nigerians, before marching to the polls in 2023, to listen dispassionately to all that the presidential candidates have to say and judge from the depths of their consciences who will best lead the nation into a new era of peace, security, prosperity and collective progress.

“Their decision to meet and dialogue with CAN officials and other Christian leaders ahead of the 2023 general elections is remarkable not only because the Church is a critical stakeholder in the Nigerian project, it also provided us a platform to collectively review our understanding of the crisis of development and governance facing our nation and find a lasting solution to them.

“Having consulted with Nigerians of diverse religious, ethnic and social class on the problems of the country and the possible solutions to them, CAN articulated these ideas in a document we christened, The Charter for a New Nigeria. The position of CAN on certain national issues based on this document was presented to the presidential candidates.

“CAN salutes the candour of all the presidential candidates who participated in the interactive session and charge those among them who have made up their minds to execute the suggested solutions to our national crisis as spelt out in the charter to walk that talk seriously, if elected in 2023.

“However, there is a need for proper understanding of the issues on the ground and thorough planning to ensure that pronouncements do not end up as mere rhetoric while an impatient public counts the days – for implementation.

“In view of the fact that the apex Christian body understands that Nigeria’s next helmsman will be under serious pressure to make an immediate impact upon assumption of office next year, we make a solemn promise to keep our doors open for further discussion on how best to make these laudable ideas a reality for the public good”.
