Fuel scarcity: Transporters threaten to picket NNPCL Headquarters

Transporters associations under the auspices of Coalition of Transporters, have threatened to picket headquarters of the Nigeria National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPL) over lingering fuel scarcity.

This is contained in a six-point Communique issued by Chairpersons of the associations yesterday in Abuja.

The Communique was signed by Alhaji Jamilu Mai Alheri, the Chairman Trailer Drivers Association (TADAN) and five others.

The associations are, Commercial Motorcycles Association of Nigeria (COMAN), Tricycles Owners Association of Nigeria (TOWAN), and the National Association of Traders of Nigeria (NASTAN).

Others are, Luxurious Bus Operators Union (LUBOU), Market Women Association of Nigeria (MAWAN),  and Trailer Drivers Association of Nigeria (TADAN).

The associations said they had put their members across the country on alert to picket  NNPCL Abuja, if nothing was done to urgently fix the problem.

The associations said they would continue to occupy the NNPCL Towers until the problem was tackled.

They also said members engaged by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to transport election related materials would be withdrawn if the problem was not resolved.

They equally said there would be a protest against any fuel retail outlet seen serving official vehicles among other things.

“We are currently experiencing unbearable conditions occasioned by the lingering fuel shortage.

“Our members depended largely on daily income from the transportation services which have been adversely affected by the scarcity. It is also inconceivable that fuel is sold at licenced and government recognised filling stations for between N350 to N400 per litre across the six geo-political zones.

“This has forced the majority of our members to abandon their buses, motorcycles among others,” the Communique read.

The associations also condemned the ongoing Naira scarcity, saying it had brought untold hardship on Nigerians.

IPAC insists on inspecting BVAS sent to Cross River

The Inter Party Advisory Council (IPAC), Cross River State chapter, has expressed worry ahead of the build-up to the February 25 and March 11 general election.

Speaking yesterday at a news conference held at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Press Centre in Calabar, the state Chairman of IPAC, Anthony Attah, said in a statement that they had lost confidence in the state leadership of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

“We demand that the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) should within 24 hours allow political parties to inspect the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) deployed in the state.

“And in addition be able to take full record of the International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number of the 3,281 BVAS machines in order to reignite and renew confidence in the commission.”

“While we reaffirm our trust in the Prof. Mahmoud Ibrahim-led INEC at the national level, we cannot say the same about Prof. Gabriel Yomeri, the REC in Cross River,” he said.

Reacting to the allegations, the REC said: “INEC, Cross River State office, states that this is not true. In a bid to ascertain the fact of the publication, the commission counted all the BVAS sent to Cross River State and confirmed that none was missing.

“The information is a deliberate falsehood by mischief makers, intended to mislead the public and ignite anxiety. ‘Cross Riverians’ and the public are enjoined to ignore the information, as the number of BVAS deployed in INEC Cross River State office is intact and secured.”

‘LP can’t afford to lose any vote for Obi in Southeast’

Labour Party (LP) has said it would ensure success in the Southeast during the February 25 presidential election.

Head, Intervention Team of the Obi/Datti Presidential Campaign Council of the party, Dr. Ifedi Okwenna, made this known during a meeting with members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in the state.

Okwenna said: “We are making efforts to achieve good results at the polls, because it will be wrong for other Nigerians to be lending their support to Peter Obi, while Southeast will be found wanting.”

“We are traversing all nooks and crannies; we have suspended sleep and rest to achieve this, and we are not relenting. In the next three weeks, presidential election will hold, and Nigerians will elect a president after their heart.

“Nigerians need a president with capacity, character, compassion, and who has the willpower to turn things around for the better, and the answer is in Peter Obi.

“Obi is one person among his contemporaries that can help Nigerians take back their country and move it forward.

NUJ State Council Chairman Comrade Odogwu Emeka lauded Okwenna and his team for choosing Anambra as one of the first states to visit in the Southeast.

He said their message of hope would be spread to ensure voter apathy was curbed in the area.

  • Emenike points new route to Abia development

Emenike points new route to Abia development

    •Unveils manifesto

The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Abia State, High Chief Ikechi Emenike, yesterday unveiled his manifesto to further assure the people that he had plans to engender a holistic development of the state.

He presented a 28-page document to reporters, party leaders and chieftains.

Emenike’s running mate, Mrs. Gloria Akara and Abia APC Chairman, Dr. Kingsley Ononogbu, attended the ceremony held at his Umukabia Okpuala country home.

The governorship candidate outlined his plan of action to actualise his mission “to rescue and develop Abia (RADA).”

He said the state had remained stagnated because the right route to development had not been followed by successive leaders.

“Abia can change and Abia will change,” he said, adding that a state that had found itself in Abia’s parlous condition “needs to be rescued” first before it could be reset for sustainable, holistic development.

Explaining his vision for Abia, Emenike said it had always been his dream for Nigeria to join the league of developed countries, adding that “nothing stops Abia from charting its own course to development if the nation as a whole fails to move forward.

“If Nigeria persists in its underdevelopment, I shall determinedly lead the charge for the emergence of a first world state, even in a third world country,” he said, adding: “We shall propel the state into a fresh highway of socio-economic development.”

The envelopment economist signified his readiness and well thought out plans to rescue and develop Abia by itemising 23 “key deliverables for 2023” spanning every sector of the Abia economy.

He fielded questions from reporters and explained every detail of his plan, saying “Abians will be the means (agents) and the end (beneficiaries) of our economic development efforts or projects”.

According to him, the Abia dream has two components of “striving to enable every citizen of Abia State live a flourishing life (while) the government and the citizens will work together to ensure every generation in the state enjoys better (higher) standard of living than the ones before it.”

The Abia APC standard-bearer said he would adopt a new approach to governance and not follow the old way of doing things, which had yielded no positive result for the state.

He promised “to lead by example, demonstrating discipline, hard work, integrity and unwavering commitment to the new Abia State, saying “we shall ensure high moral, ethical, competent and godly standard in governance.”

Emenike said Abia had been moving in a vicious cycle of underdevelopment because those piloting the affairs of the state lacked ideas of how to get things done the right way to achieve good results.

He lamented a situation where the budget of Abia had remained low over the years without the leaders doing anything to grow it to meet the development needs of the state.

The governorship hopeful said anybody in the seat of power in Abia who thinks he can develop the state with the present budget size of less than N200 billion will be embarking on a voyage of self-deceit.

He promised to grow the budget of Abia by as much 200 per cent and also ensure that public funds are used for the public, hence embezzlement, misappropriation or diversion of public will not be tolerated.

Emenike urged ‘Abians’ to rise up and join him to rescue and develop Abia movement, saying since there was a consensus that Abia was in a parlous state, no one should sit on the fence.

He urged every ‘Abian’ of voting age to demonstrate their anger against perpetrators of bad governance by coming out to vote for good governance.

“March 11 is an opportunity for languishing workers and pensioners to make a positive statement with their votes,” Emenike said.
