Wike orders security agencies to clamp down on cultists, militants

Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike has directed security agencies to raid hideout and clamp down on cultists, militants and other miscreants being used by politicians to disturb the peace, safety and security of the state ahead of the general election.

He appealed to whistle-blowers to expose the camps, gatherings, plans and activities of criminals and their sponsors.

Wike gave the directive yesterday during a state broadcast in Port Harcourt, following rising cultism and other criminal activities across the state.

He said: “We also denounce the rising cases of cultism in the state during this electioneering period, which are sponsored by politicians to settle political scores.

“Apart from committing heinous crimes, cultists masking as party support groups and thugs are used by rival party leaders to assault opponents and disrupt party meetings, especially in those political parties with protracted internal crises arising from their flawed primaries.

“We are aware that desperate politicians are recruiting and arming cultists and other miscreants to be used to attack and intimidate voters during the polls.

“I wish to warn that no responsible government will close its eyes to the threat posed by these cultists, fanatical party support groups, and their sponsors to free and fair elections in the state.

“Consequently, I have directed the security agencies to raid any suspected area or premises and clamp down on cultists, militant support groups and other miscreants being used by politicians to disturb the peace, safety and security of the state.”

The governor insisted that no amount of campaigns of calumny and diatribes by a section of the media and the political elite would deter the state government from enforcing the existing laws against those, who claimed to be above them.

He said: “Unlike other states, we have refrained from using the state’s Neighbourhood Corps to enforce law and order by allowing the regular security agencies to do their constitutional work.”

    interest.

Wike said the state was experiencing peaceful campaigns, except for isolated cases of violence by sponsored rival cults, gangs and support groups in one or two political rallies.

He hailed the security agencies for providing adequate security cover for all political parties to conduct their electioneering, even crowded rallies and meetings.

Wike said his government would continue to support the security agencies to sustain the prevailing atmosphere of peace and security for voters to exercise their rights without fear or intimidation.

He said: “I assure you that there is nothing to fear, as the state government and the security agencies will spare no effort to keep Rivers State peaceful, safe and secure for citizens to go about their daily activities.”

    •Governor: allegation baseless

THE people of Isuokom in Ebonyi State have written an open letter to President Muhammadu Buhari, seeking his intervention over the alleged threat to the life of their son, Ifeanyi Odii, by agents of the state government.

Odii is the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for the 2023 governorship election in Ebonyi State.

His Isuokom kinsmen are alleging that his life was under threat by agents of the Ebonyi State Government.

They made the allegations in a petition signed by Mr. John Nnanna Njoku, President General of Isuokoma; Mr. Sunday Igne, the Youth President of Isuokoma; Chief Tony Anoke, Diaspora Leader of Isuokoma; Chief Augustine Chigbo Okoro, Coordinator of Isuokoma West Africa and Obasi Livinus Onu, Abakaliki Branch Chairman of Isu Okoma.

They called on President Buhari, Inspector-General of Police, Department of State Services (DSS), Ebonyi State Commissioner of Police, Ebonyi State Director of DSS and other security agents/agencies to rescue them, “in order to save Dr. Odii and the entire people of Isuokoma from the destructive tendencies of Governor Umahi.”

The people of Isuokoma said they viewed with much concern, trepidation and agony, “the worrisome, persistent, unveiled verbal attacks and threats to the life of our son, Odii, by Umahi.”

They alleged that the governor had in various forms and forums, demonstrated crass hatred and animosity against Odii, following his aspiration and subsequent nomination as the PDP governorship standard-bearer in the 2023 governorship election in Ebonyi State.

“There is no doubt that the recent outburst of Governor Umahi against security chiefs and agencies in Ebonyi State, in which he threatened to block and attack the convoys of opposition candidates in the state, was targeted at our son, High Chief Odii.”

Contacted, the Special Assistant on Research and documentation to Governor Umahi, Mr. Francis Nwaze, dismissed the allegations as coming from political jobbers.

He said the governor had been open minded in dealing with members of the opposition parties in the state, stressing that he allowed them access to campaign venues.

According to the VC, the task of the committee will involve fund raising, among others.

Prof. Olapegba thanked the university management for the confidence reposed in him, promising to put in his best in discharging the enormous task ahead.

The Vice Chancellor of Federal University, Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), Prof. Abayomi Fasina, has said 91 students, who bagged first class degrees, would be honoured at the institution’s 7th convocation ceremony slated for February 11.

Addressing a news conference yesterday in Oye-Ekiti, ahead of the ceremony, Fasina said the 91 students were among 3,914 others to be awarded their degree certificates.

He said his administration, in the last two years, had increased the number of students from 512, to more than 40,000, with well-equipped facilities, to create an enabling environment for learning.

Fasina said the institution had also established part-time centres in nine towns in the state to give opportunity to students, who were unable to undertake full time programme.

According to the VC, in the last two years of assuming office, he had been able to maintain peace and stability, as well as resolved issues with 141 aggrieved members of staff.

“In the first degree category, we have 91 First Class students, 1,423 Second Class Upper students, 1,845 Second Class Lower and 452 Third Class students.

“In the post graduate category, we have 21 PhD students, 79 Masters students and three PGD students.

“I have been able to have dialogue with our union members to ensure internal issues do not affect our academic calendar.

“Currently, there is no aggrieved body or individual in our university, because all pending issues have been resolved in the last two years of my administration,” he said.

Speaking on workers welfare, Fasina said 762 members of staff were promoted in the last two years.

He noted that arrears of hazard allowance had been paid, while data allowance was given to members of the academic staff to support their teaching skills.

It said none of them is competent to become the president of Nigeria.

391,145 PVCs uncollected in Osun, says REC

Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in Osun State, Dr. Mutiu Agboke, has said 391,145 permanent voter cards (PVCs) have yet to be collected in the state.

Agboke, speaking with reporters yesterday in Osogbo, said the figure was, however, an improvement from the more than 470,000 uncollected PVCs, which he met when he resumed as REC in the state in 2022.

He said the advocacy visits and public enlightenments he embarked on had helped in reducing the figure of uncollected PVCs.

Agboke reiterated INEC’s readiness to conduct the forthcoming general election, saying 12 of the 14 schedules of the commission had been completed in readiness for the exercise.

“The two remaining items in our schedule are the conclusion of campaigns by political parties, which is 24 hours to the election, while the last one is the election proper,” he said.

He said the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) remained the only means of accreditation for the elections and that anybody not accredited with the machine would not be allowed to vote.

The REC urged the electorate, election observers, political parties and security agents to beam their searchlight on INEC officials during the elections to ensure that anyone not accredited with BVAS was not allowed to vote.

“INEC has said BVAS is for accreditation of voters and all of us need to open our eyes.

“If a voter does not go through the BVAS, he or she is not eligible to vote. If we open our eyes, how will someone not accredited now collect ballot paper?

“We should all open our eyes during the election to ensure nobody votes without accreditation,” he said.

Buhari, world leaders mourn death of 3,500 in Turkey, Syria earthquakes

    •Buhari, world leaders mourn

PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari has extended Nigeria’s sympathy and solidarity to the governments and people of Turkey and Syria over the earthquakes that have claimed thousands of lives in the southern Turkish city of Gaziantep.

As of the time of going to press last night, 3,500 lives had been lost in Turkey and Syria to the devastating earthquakes, which struck in the early hours of yesterday.

Also, a small earthquake rumbled through western New York early yesterday, alarming people in a region unaccustomed to such shaking but apparently causing no significant damage.

The United States (U.S.) Geological Survey preliminarily reported a 3.8 earthquake centered east of Buffalo in the suburb of West Seneca at about 6.15am. Seismologist Yaareb Altaweel said it matched the intensity of the strongest earthquake the region has seen in 40 years of available records — a 3.8 quake that was recorded in November 1999.

The shaking lasted a few seconds and sent residents first to their windows and then to social media in search of an explanation.

According to a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, President Buhari also assured the countries of Nigeria’s willingness to give support in any way possible.

The statement reads: “President Muhammadu Buhari extends heartfelt commiserations to the governments and people of Turkey and Syria, and those who lost family and friends in the devastating earthquake in the southern Turkish city of Gaziantep.

“The President wishes those injured a speedy recovery and assures that the prayers and thoughts of Nigerians are with the many affected by this severe disaster and its aftershocks.

“As a steadfast friend to Turkey and Syria, President Buhari says Nigeria is ready to offer its full support in any way possible.”

Last night, hundreds of people were believed to be trapped under rubble, fueling possible rise in the death toll.

Rescue workers were searching mountains of wreckage in cities and towns across the area.

On both sides of the border, residents jolted out of sleep by the pre-dawn quake rushed outside on a cold winter’s night.

So far, the Turkish government has received offers of assistance from the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO), the European Union, and 45 countries, including embattled Ukraine.

The Greek Head of Government Kyriakos Mitsotakis said that Greece would help immediately in spite of tensions between his country and Turkey.

Mitsotakis said Greece had rescue teams with extensive experience in earthquake-hit regions. The two NATO members had helped each other during major earthquakes in Turkey and Greece in 1999.

Italy’s civil defence also offered help, according to the government.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni was following the situation in the disaster area, expressing sympathy to those affected.

According to the President of the country’s disaster management agency, besides, the deaths recorded in 10 Turkish provinces, 8,500 people were injured.

The death toll in government-held areas of Syria climbed past 430 people, with some 1,280 injured, according to the health ministry.

In the country’s rebel-held North-west, groups that operate there said the death toll was at least 380, with many hundreds more injured.

Buildings were reduced to piles of pancaked floors, and major aftershocks or new quakes, including one nearly as strong as the first, continued to rattle the region.

Rescue workers and residents in multiple cities searched for survivors, working through tangles of metal and concrete. A hospital in Turkey also collapsed, and patients, including newborn babies, were evacuated from facilities in Syria.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said: “Because the debris removal efforts are continuing in many buildings in the earthquake zone, we do not know how high the number of dead and injured will rise. Hopefully, we will leave these disastrous days behind us in unity and solidarity as a country and a nation.”

The quake, which was centred on Turkey’s South-Eastern Province of Kahramanmaras, was felt as far away as Cairo. It sent residents of Damascus rushing into the street and jolted awake people in their beds in Beirut.

In the Turkish city of Adana, one resident said three buildings near his home were toppled.

The tremor struck a region that has been shaped on both sides of the border by more than a decade of civil war in Syria.

On the Syrian side, the region affected is divided between government-held territory and the country’s last opposition-held enclave, which is surrounded by Russian-backed government forces. Turkey, meanwhile, is home to millions of refugees from that conflict.

The opposition-held regions in Syria are packed with some four million people displaced from other parts of the country by the fighting.

Many of them live in buildings that had been wrecked from past bombardments. Hundreds of families remained trapped in rubble, according to the opposition emergency organisation, the White Helmets.

Ibrahim al Haj, a spokesperson for the voluntary White Helmets rescue service in the countryside of Aleppo, told dpa, “We are in a disaster area, some of my family members are still under the rubble.”

The injured are mainly suffering from skull fractures, broken legs and arms, he said.

Hours later, there had been reports of major tremors in the affected region. The European Mediterranean Seismological Centre confirmed that a second earthquake of at least 7.5 magnitude hit Turkey.

The earthquake came as the middle eastern country is experiencing a snowstorm that is expected to continue until Thursday.

Turkey shelters more than 3.6 million Syrian refugees, according to data from Human Rights Watch.

Tremor hit south-eastern Turkey and north-eastern Syria yesterday morning. Both countries reported hundreds of fatalities and thousands of injuries

Erdogan said rescue teams have rescued hundreds of people from under the rubble of buildings flattened by the quake.
