‘Battle for denominational supremacy, bane of Christian growth in Nigeria’

    By Simon Utebor, Yenagoa

Bayelsa State Deputy Governor Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo has identified battle for supremacy of churches along denominational lines as the bane of Christian growth in the country.

Ewhrudjakpo made this known at separate meetings with the Catholic Men’s Organization of St. Mathias Catholic Church, Amarata, and representatives of the Organization of African Instituted Churches (OAIC), Bayelsa State chapter, in Government House, Yenagoa.

He expressed concern over the division among Christians who lay greater emphasis on their doctrines and fail to appreciate the fact that they all worship one indivisible God.

Ewhrudjakpo stressed that if Christians sank their doctrinal differences to pursue the overall goal of spreading the gospel of Christ with sincerity of purpose, they would make greater impact in society.

He, therefore, urged Christian leaders and their followers to eschew divisiveness and work in unity to propagate the gospel.

Responding to their demands, the Deputy Governor said the present administration would continue to identify with churches in different ways including attending programmes whenever time permits.

He said: “As we are celebrating Pentecost, we should know that we are celebrating the spirit of oneness. What makes up Pentecost is the strength of the church to go wherever they want to.

“Oneness does not mean that we do not disagree; it means that we are one, whether in disagreement or not. It is the oneness of purpose that drives the process of success.

“We must as Christians try to promote ecumenism, which is the unity of Christians to preach Christ. It does not matter your denomination. The more divided we are, the weaker the body of Christ. “

Earlier, the Chairman of the Catholic Men’s Organization (CMO), St Matthias Church, Amarata, Mr. Paul Matthew, thanked the State Governor, Senator Douye Diri for his enormous assistance to Bomadi Diocese of the Catholic Church.

According to Matthew, Governor Diri is the first to appoint a Reverend Father as Deputy Chaplain in Government House Chaplaincy since the creation of the state.

On his part, the state Chairman of Organization of African Instituted Churches, Senior Apostle Michael Makpah, commended the security and development efforts of the state government including prompt payment of workers salaries.

While pledging continued support for the present administration, Senior Apostle Makpah, appealed to the Governor and his deputy to create greater bond with the Christian community by periodically attending Sunday services outside their own churches

Demolition: Ikosi-Isheri traders seek Sanwo-Olu, lawmakers’ intervention

    By Ibrahim Apekhade Yusuf

Embattled traders at the Ikosi-Isheri Complex, located at Ketu, Lagos, have called on the Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwoolu and member of Lagos State House of Assembly, to come to the rescue over recent demolition of the shops and stalls by the chairperson of Ikosi-Isheri Local Council Development Area (LCDA) Mrs. Simiat Bada.

From available information, the distraught traders who protested the demolition last Monday, accused the chairperson of demolishing the complex, without any prior, said the singular act has taken away their livelihood, while some of them have been bedridden due to the shock they have over the sudden demolition of the complex.

Leader of the traders, Mr. Amusa Isiaka, who claimed to have lost two shops to the complex demolition, said they were caught unaware by the developer, named Onyenachi, whom he said claimed to be working for someone.

He said: “it all happened in January this year, when we saw some people in the market and told us that someone that is called ‘Onyekachi’ wanted to develop the complex, we asked them that if the complex is to be redeveloped, is it not we that owns it that supposed to develop it? They did not give us any further information.

“As at the time the developer came, the complex was not defective and we always make sure that its clean and tidy. We thought that it was joke, we mobilised ourselves and went to the chairman and told her some people came and told us that they wants to develop the complex.

“She told us to go and promised to talk the people, for that week, there was no message from her. When there was no message from her for that week, we went to the DPO and report the matter. The DPO promised to intervene and we were called for a meeting, the developer said he is on errand and there is nothing he can could and that he has to do as order.”

Also speaking, 81 years old Madam Esther Ogunleye described the act of the LCDA chairman as unexpected and sad.

Solicitor to the displaced traders, Barrister Shakirullahi Obale, also expressed dismay at the attitude of the LCDA for ignoring all letters written by the affected traders. Obale said if not that the protest by the judicial workers, the matter would have been in court.

Efforts to speaking with the council boss, Mrs. Abolanle Bada, proved abortive, as one of her aides, Mr. Ayo Idowu, who claimed to be Chief Press Secretary said she was indisposed.

Seplat debt stock rises to $400m in year end, proposes new name

    By Ibrahim Apekhade Yusuf

Seplat Petroleum PLC debt stock is on the upward swing as the company recorded over $440million during the outgoing operating year.

Specifically, its debt profile stands at $440 million (N211.2 billion) and only returned $344 million as dividends after it had raised $535 million from shareholders in form of public offering in the year 2014.

The company’s capital expenditure in the 2020 business year was higher than the $125 million spent in 2019 and has attributed it to the company’s commitment to growth. The company voluntarily repaid $100 million of its Revolving Credit Facility and ended the year with $225 million in cash and net debt of $440 million.

According to Seplat it announced in October 2020, an interim dividend of US$0.05 and the Board has further approved an additional top-up of US$0.05, maintaining bringing it’s dividends to US$0.10 for the 2020 financial year.

Seplat Petroleum Development is a Nigerian independent energy company listed on both the Nigerian Exchange Group (NXG) and the London Stock Exchange (LSE) has stated its drive for a sustainable energy generation, even as shareholders gave their approval for a change in corporate name.

The shareholders at the 8th Annual General Meeting (AGM) held jointly physical and virtually on last Thursday approved the change of corporate name to Seplat Energy Plc.

The shareholders also approved all resolutions from the Board and commended the performance of the company for the financial year 2020.

In his address to shareholders and other stakeholders during the AGM, Dr. ABC Orjiako, the Chairman of Board, Seplat, said the company’s cash position remained strong in the full-year of 2020 and the $318 million of cash it generated from operations was significantly more than the $150 million invested for future growth.

The company’s average working interest production was 51,183boepd, including 33,714bopd of liquids and 101MMscfd gas (17,469boepd), he said.

“Of this, our Eland assets contributed 8,855bopd, or 26% of total liquid volumes. Our financial performance enabled us to maintain our commitment to paying dividends. While other companies were cutting back or cancelling payments for the 2019 financial year, because of prevailing uncertainties, we honoured our commitment and paid a final dividend of US$0.05, for a total dividend of US$0.10 for 2019.

“The strengthening of our Board is part of our ongoing desire to achieve world-class governance of our company. Six of our 13-member Board are independent and we continue to work towards increasing diversity. In addition, as we announced in March, we have taken the bold decision to eliminate all Related-Party Transactions – a move that exceeds the requirements of the UK Code of Corporate Governance,” he added

According to Dr. Orjiako, it is the responsibility of the Board to plan for the long-term sustainability of the company, as scenario analyses on Seplat’s assets have been conducted under different climate change and demand scenarios, whilst looking towards a future in which Seplat is much more involved in promoting low carbon environment in its operations and the company adopting Seplat Energy as its new name following the passage of the resolution at its AGM.

“Such a transition will involve significant new innovations, technology, skills and relationships, compared to our existing expertise of subsurface exploration, drilling and hydrocarbon processing, but we are determined to be a major part of Nigeria’s future energy mix and help drive the country towards more sustainable energy generation,” the Seplat Chairman emphasized.

He added: “Our ANOH Gas Processing Plant will be a major step forwards in Nigeria’s drive to reduce carbon emissions, replacing potentially millions of small-scale, inefficient, and polluting generators with cleaner utility-scale power generation fired by Nigerian natural gas. In addition, we intend to increase our disclosure of environmental, social and governance (ESG) data, by adopting the recommendations of the Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures and will commit to reporting CO2 emission data to the Carbon Disclosure Project in the near future.”

In the same vein, Mr. Roger Brown, Chief Executive Officer, Seplat, said there is pressure to reduce oil extraction and the carbon emissions it creates; but that, he noted, depended on the rest of the world adopting less oil-intensive ways to travel and generate power.

He explained: “Nigeria’s per-capita energy consumption and carbon emissions are actually very low, and its national electricity grid is still very poorly developed. This is why the country is so reliant on small-scale diesel generation to satisfy its energy needs and this is the problem we need to address most urgently.

“It’s important to recognise that Nigeria is a developing country with low access to energy and a rapidly growing young population. Hydrocarbons are the country’s main resource and provide significant help for its economy. The proceeds from the oil industry fund a wide range of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and are crucial to the country’s societal development.”
