Experts mull background checks to check corporate fraud

    By Ibrahim Apekhade Yusuf

In a bid to further re-inforce the core message of instilling background checks as a culture, Nigeria’s pioneer in the industry, Background Check International (BCI) organised a webinar titled ‘The impact of background check on businesses, now and in the future” aimed at promoting the overall importance of background checks to corporate existence.

The webinar had in attendance global expert, Barry Nixon, the Founder and COO of Pre-employment Directory, USA, Yemi Faseun, Head, Human Resources, Globacom, Mary Ikoku, Editor-in-Chief, Working Moms Africa Magazine and Kunbi Adeoti, Divisional Director, Leadway Assurance Company Ltd, among others.

The speakers urged corporate organisations to conduct due diligence before employing any staff to forestall avoidable mistakes which could cost the organisation both in the short, medium to long term.

According to them, data has been a major challenge in conducting due diligence as this impedes the due diligence process.

Specifically, Adeoti stated that due diligence impacts the organisation and it should form a crucial part of the employment process to identify bad behaviour and fraudulent acts. “If due diligence is not done, certain behavioral pattern may impede organisational growth.”

Echoing similar sentiments, Faseun believes there should be tracking of employees before they engage in fraudulent acts.

On his part, Barry White, Founder, pre-employment Directory.Com stated that every organisation should start a culture of verification.

While commenting on the issue, the Chief Executive Officer of Background Check International, Mr. Kola Olugbodi bemoaned the situation where organisations inadvertently forgo background checks when making hiring decisions.

Further justifying the relevance of background check, Olugbodi said it has to be determined in line with what organisations stand in line with what organisations stand to gain or lose.

He further said about 70 percent of organisational loss is always due to employees sharp practices even as he urged organisations to stop recruiting based on brilliance and focus on due diligence and background checks.

In reinforcing the issue of culture, Ikoku stated that hiring staff need the same indices applied during traditional marriage to prevent fraudulent claims. “Hiring new employees needs the same traditional pattern of background check due to corruption the system.”

Other actors in the ecosystems include local buying agents, processors, exporters, and service providers.

Thanks to scientific research, there has been a substantial improvement in seed varieties that have introduced improved varieties which present primary production efforts need to take advantage of the meet the improved quality requirements of the international market,” he said.

The Chairman, Mega Group, Mr Sam Onukwue expressed optimism that LCFE would transform the commodities ecosystem and put it on the global map. He attributed one of the challenges that raw exporters face to inability to repatriate their fundsback into the country.

Speaking earlier, the Managing Director, Agvest, Mr Olabode Abikoye, while addressing journalists on Tuesday, explained that proceeds of the offer would enable the company to get both its plantation and factory up and running in West Africa at the first instance.

According to him, Agvest will commence with cashew aggregation on the spot market, issue exchange traded notes in the medium term and add value.

“Our decision to list Cashew Nut contracts on the LCFE is to enable private investors enjoy the benefits of quotation. We shall by this approach support the governments drive to generate foreign exchange. We have 210 hectares of land as plantation in Iwo, Oyo State and we are working closely with Oyo State Investment and Public Partnership Agency (OYSIPA) to activate our plan.

“As a listed product, our cashew shall always meet international standard as prescribed by the International Standard Organization (ISO) which requires good temperature, moisture level and grade. I suffered a lot, says tearful Suarez after Atletico Madrid La Liga win

The Uruguayan was allowed to heads through the exits at Camp Nou last summer, but has helped the Rojiblancos to a La Liga crown.

Luis Suarez has helped to fire Atletico Madrid to title glory, with the Uruguayan striker delighted to have offered the perfect response to those that “underestimated” him at Barcelona.

The Uruguayan striker was surprisingly allowed to head for the exits at Camp Nou in the summer of 2020, with Ronald Koeman and the Blaugrana deemingly him surplus to requirements.

Doors were thrown open at Wanda Metropolitano, with Suarez hitting 21 goals – including a crucial match-winner on the final day – to land an emotional La Liga crown for the Rojiblancos.

A tearful Suarez told Movistar at the final whistle of a 2-1 win over Real Valladolid that confirmed Atletico’s coronation: “The situation I experienced last summer was difficult, the way I was underestimated.

“Atletico Madrid opened up their doors to me to keep on showing the player I am.”

While his value was questioned in Catalunya, those in Madrid were only too happy to present the 34-year-old with another prominent stage on which to showcase his talent.

That faith has been richly rewarded by a proven marksman that had hit 198 goals across six years at Camp Nou.

All of his efforts this season came in La Liga and contributed towards Atletico collecting 21 points, with no player in the Spanish top-flight proving to be as valuable to any given cause.

Diego Simeone has returned Atletico to the top of La Liga after a seven-year wait for title glory, with the Argentine continuing to bring the best out of a team punching above its weight in battles with Clasico rivals Real Madrid and Barcelona.

They have given everything to the collective cause again this season, with Marcos Llorente admitting that there is nothing left in the tank.

He said: “We’re knackered. It’s been a really tight season with a lot of games. It’s been tough physically, but in the end we’ve got this crucial win and we’ve managed to win the title.

“The togetherness we have has been crucial to achieving this.”

He added on edging out Valladolid, who took a first-half lead before Angel Correa and Suarez hit back: “We felt the nerves a bit today given it was such a key game, but we just wanted to win so as not to have to think about the result of the other game.

“At the break we managed to calm ourselves down and we went out there and turned the match around.

“I’d like to thank the fans. They haven’t been able to be in the stands but we’ve felt their support in a really tough year.” Goal

  • UPDATED: Altetico Madrid win 2020/2021 La Liga title

UPDATED: Altetico Madrid win 2020/2021 La Liga title

Atletico Madrid edged city rivals Real Madrid to the La Liga title in dramatic fashion by coming from behind to beat Real Valladolid in the final game.

Diego Simeone’s side trailed to Oscar Plano’s strike but turned the match around in the second half through goals from Angel Correa and Luis Suarez.

Real scored twice late on to beat Villarreal 2-1 but came up short as they needed Atletico to drop points.

Atletico clinched their first title in seven years and their 11th overall.

It was a highly satisfying triumph for Los Colchoneros as they finished two points ahead of defending champions Real, who end the season without silverware.

Barcelona – playing without skipper Lionel Messi, who was resting before the summer’s Copa America – won 1-0 at Eibar through Antoine Griezmann’s acrobatic strike and clinched third place ahead of Sevilla.

Julen Lopetegui’s side play their final league game on Sunday against Alaves but will finish fourth even with a victory because of an inferior head-to-head record against Barca.

The La Liga title race was set up for a thrilling conclusion and it did not disappoint.

Injured Real skipper Sergio Ramos celebrated in the stands as news filtered through of Atletico falling behind, but the Spain defender was subdued in his seat just two minutes later when Yeremi Pino flicked in a goal for Europa League finalists Villarreal against the defending champions.

With both Madrid sides behind at the break, Simeone and Zidane needed to give inspiring team talks.

In the second half, Karim Benzema thought he had equalised when he powered in a header and while VAR checked the goal – and ruled it out – Atletico levelled through Correa’s smart finish to put them on the verge of glory.

Benzema, who has earned a recall to the France squad for the summer’s European Championship, dragged wide from a promising position and seconds later Suarez ran clear and converted calmly to put Atletico 2-1 up. BBC

  • Bundesliga: Lewandowski breaks 49-year-old Muller’s goal-scoring records

    Bundesliga: Lewandowski breaks 49-year-old Muller’s goal-scoring records

Bayern Munich’s Robert Lewandowski scored in the last minute of the season to break Gerd Muller’s 49-year record of Bundesliga goals in a campaign.

Lewandowski looked poised to be frustrated but pounced in the 90th minute for his 41st goal of the season.

The Poland striker now has 53 goals in 46 games for club and country heading into Euro 2020.

The home side scored four times in the first half against Augsburg with Manuel Neuer also saving a penalty.

Bayern, who had already wrapped up their ninth consecutive Bundesliga title, said goodbye to their manager and a number of star players who will leave this summer.

Hansi Flick was appointed in November 2019 and claimed the Champions League, two Bundesliga titles, the German Cup, Uefa Super Cup and Club World Cup during his spell in charge.

David Alaba and Javi Martinez are soon out of contract and both played their final games for the side, as did Jerome Boateng – who left the field in tears when he was replaced on the hour mark.

But the day belonged to Lewandowski, who was repeatedly thwarted by Augsburg keeper Rafal Gikiewicz before reacting quickest to a fumble to roll the ball into an open net.

The striker took his shirt off in celebration before coming to the side of the pitch to embrace the departing Flick.

Bayern took the lead through Jeffrey Gouweleeuw’s own goal and doubled their lead courtesy of Serge Gnabry’s header from close range.

Neuer saved Daniel Caligiuri’s penalty and Bayern scored two more before half-time through Joshua Kimmich’s long-range thunderbolt and Kingsley Coman’s low drive.

Augsburg pulled two goals back via Andre Hahn’s thumping header and Florian Niederlechner’s cool finish before Lewandowski netted his record-breaking strike. BBC
