Elders, youths kick against FUTO over land encroachment

    By Chris Njoku, Owerri

Elders and youths of Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO) host communities of Obokwu, Obinze in Owerri West Local Government Area of Imo State have staged a peaceful protest, warning the management of the institution to desist from encroaching into their ancestral land.

The elders, consisting of men and women, first marched to the Senate Building of the university, and moved to the Aroche, Uzoegbelu and Obokwu Obinzei sites of the land.

The protesters, who were seen chanting war songs, carried different placards with different inscriptions like: “Mayor of Ihiagwa, our land will favour you, unscrupulous elements in the government of Imo, stay clear from Obokwu land,” among others.

Speaking, one of the elders of Obokwu, Sydney Igwe, lamented that FUTO forcefully encroached into their land without compensation.

He said that the university did not give the community slots when they were recruiting staff members.

Also Victor Ihezue from Obokwu stated that Chief Sam Anokam was the only attorney they have.

He dismissed other people, who were fronting themselves as attorneys to the land, adding that those attorneys were in the struggle for their selfish interest.

“Sam Anokam is our attorney. He is in this struggle not for self-aggrandizement but for the benefit of all. He is a real and qualified estate consultant, who knows his onions in estate business”.

He also said that the Memorandum of Understanding between FUTO and the host communities had been breached by the university, adding that what the federal government only paid was compensation for the economic trees at the time they were establishing the university.

In his speech, the Obokwu Youth Chairman, Wilson Ekeugbo stated that the land was for the settlement of their upcoming generation.

“That land FUTO has encroached into is the only land remaining for the entire community. If it eludes us today, we will not have any other place for our upcoming generation. In fact, we cannot afford to lose the large expanse of land that is up to thousands of hectares,” he said.

The Obokwu Community Chairman, Comrade Chukwudi Emegha, who read out a section of the MoU between Obinze and FUTO, said that FUTO had failed to return more than 1000 hectares of land along the Owerri- Port Harcourt road axis to the host communities in lieu of compensation.

Also, Charity Ekeada stated that the women were not happy with the development, adding that this was why they joined in the demonstration.

She said, “This land is for the future generation of our sons. We are touched because anything that touches our husbands touches us”.

Reacting, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Francis Eze, maintained that the dispute “is almost solved with the intervention of the Federal Government,” adding that the excised land would only be returned to the state government who in turn would reach out to the host communities.

Amaechi orders arrest of buyers of vandalised rail equipment

    By Faith Yahaya, Abuja

The Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi has ordered the arrest of buyers of vandalised rail track facilities and other equipment.

Amaechi said cases of vandalisation exists because there are those who have indicated interest in the vandalised facilities.

He also said the rate of vandalisation would reduce if the judiciary system dispenses justice without delay, adding that State Government need to create more jobs.

The Minister disclosed this on Saturday at Ibadan during the inspection of the Lagos-Ibadan railway project.

On the vandalisation of the rail tracks and other facilities, he said: “I don’t know why some Nigerians are like the way they are. I have told the Managing Director of NRC to arrest the buyers of the equipment. It is not enough to arrest the vandals.

“It is likened to those who said why should the National Assembly punish those who pay ransom, that law was first passed by the Rivers State House of Assembly when I was a speaker and the reason is, that, when there is no demand, there will be no supply.

“If we don’t pay ransom, they will be tired and they will stop. The same way, if they don’t buy those metals, slippers and others, nobody will steal them.”

He said: “Also, we must approach the Judiciary to have court that can dispense justice readily so that people are sent to jail early enough to deter others and we will also encourage our governors to create jobs.”

The Minister also hinted that some people who have been vandalising the facilities have been arrested.

Amaechi also said the Lagos-Ibadan project would be commissioned next month after getting approval from the office of the president.

He said: “I hope the Office of the President will approve the commissioning of this project in June. We will communicate the actual date in the next one or two weeks but certainly, I think it is in June.

“We are not 100 percent ready for commissioning but if for nothing, we are 89 to 90 percent ready for commissioning and we are hoping that by the next three weeks we will be ready and by then, they will give us a date fron the office of the president. One thing is that by the time they give us a date, we will be ready for commissioning.”

He also said the e-ticketing platform would be deployed to Lagos-Ibadan route in order to manage the envisaged passenger traffic.

“I have directed the MD of NRC to advertise for the e-ticketing and we hope the traffic that we will witness on this axis will be managed with that platform.”

On how the project would be maintained upon completion, Amaechi said: “There is maintenance plan between us and CCECC within the next three to five years and by then, I would have left government but for me and within the period I am serving as minister, there is an agreement between us and CCECC for the purpose of maintenance.”

Infantino wants overhaul of FIFA calendar

FIFA president Gianni Infantino on Friday called for an overhaul of the international football calendar beyond 2024, insisting on a requirement to start with a “blank sheet of paper”.

“Let me be very clear: the starting point is not ‘the calendar is full and so nothing changes’,” he told the 71st FIFA Congress.

“The starting point is the exact opposite of that. We have a blank sheet, we are open to take on board all views and opinions about how we can make the international calendar better.”

Infantino reiterated his intention to “find a date” for a Club World Cup which he wants to see extended to 24 teams, despite widespread opposition to the plan.

However, he argued at length Friday for FIFA to play a key role in rewriting the calendar.

He said the organisation is the “only body” that “generates” and “redistributes” its revenues “around the world” unlike continental confederations and leagues.

“Today, big leagues generate billions in revenues from all over the world – and these revenues are distributed where? To the 18-20 clubs in their leagues, with a small percentage going in solidarity.”

He added: “The only body which is generating revenues from all over the world and redistributing and investing all over the world in solidarity is FIFA.”
