  • WHEN TWILIGHT CAME TO THE TYRANT

WHEN TWILIGHT CAME TO THE TYRANT

    By Niyi Osundare

You drove a sword through Friendship’s heart

Dumped Loyalty in an unmarked grave

And seized the throne with your blood-encrusted hands

And darkness fell upon the land

Roadsides reeked with the stench of murdered voices

The Burkinabe danfa shriveled into a pall

You broadened your brief in the network of other tyrants

Your bloodline thick like a bastard plague

    Practiced puppeteers extolled your dance

Fixed your steps to the beat of their vassal drum

As they pledged all power, all privilege

To the longevity of your rule

    But you saw Sankara

    In the air you breathed

In the water which whetted your thirst

In the interrogating mirror of the Burkinabe eye

    You saw Sankara

    In the rainbow which transgressed

    The darkness of your sky

In every page of your trembling Bible

    You are the three-penny coin

Tossed in the wind in the cannibal

    Game of dispossessing masters

    The laughing jackass

    Who held down his brood

For the fury of the alien whip

    Common house rat

Who feigned the lineage of lions

    Until History counted his claws

    And uncovered a missing fire

An angry wind blew; your phantom mane

Rolled deviously down your shortening neck

  • ‘Youths are involved in the membership of writers clan in Abuja’

‘Youths are involved in the membership of writers clan in Abuja’

Lois Otse Adams holds brief as the chairman, transition committee of the Association of Nigerian Authors ANA, Abuja chapter. In this interview with EDOZIE UDEZE, this foremost biographer talks about her readiness to return the association back to its glorious past and how her father influenced her writing career and more.

ASSOCIATION of Nigerian Authors is 40 this year. What preparations are you making to mark the anniversary?

The 40th year of the existence of Association of Nigerian Authors will be hosted in Abuja, being the Federal Capital Territory, and fortunately for me I am a member of the Abuja Chapter that will play host to the landmark event.

We at the Abuja Chapter are very much interested in partnering ANA National, and at the moment we have started aligning with the Writers Village in Mpape. We hold all our Literary events there, in preparation to marking the epoch occasion.

There are several inspiring lined-up  events to take place before, during and after the actual month of August; like the engagement of 40 authors and their books, having geo-political Literary Readings across the nation, festivals of contents, display of talents, bringing creativity to the subconscious of the Nigerian youths. The youths are already being involved because, the President, Mr. Camilus Ukah is someone who believes in the development of young people and nurturing young minds. This is because without them ANA can not mark it’s 80th year anniversary. So it is very vital they are involved to play several roles in what they know how to do best, that is arts.

We have started writing to schools for courtesy visit to Vice Chancellors, Rectors,  Principals, etc of the need to officially release their arts students to us during the period of celebration.

Lots of students will be involved, especially from related departments like Literary Studies, English Language, Theater Arts, to spark up the event and for them to be reminded that arts need to be sustained by conscience efforts and this is by practicing it.

You can deduct the enormous role of the Abuja Chapter in marking the legacy laid by our forefather, Prof. Chinua Achebe. We are already making plans to liaise with other chapters to actualise the purpose of the anniversary, which is to keep good legacy alive.

We are in touch with the national body therefore, every further role assigned to us as a chapter shall be carried out amicable without hesitation by the Almighty God.

As the head of the transition committee of Abuja ANA, what are we expecting from you to stem the storm?

From the day I became a member of the Association of Nigerian Authors, Abuja Chapter, with my dear father, Dr. Omokhogie Adamu, an author, who was the oldest member of the association before he passed four years ago, I became resolute and everybody sensed that, maybe that is what has led me to where we are today. Being appointed  chairman of the transition committee, to me it was not by accident but hard work and resilience, and it didn’t come to me as shock. This is because I have had great expectations for the chapter. The purpose of the association was dwindling and it became so obvious that if something was not done the umbrella body of writers globally may go into extinction. But I am happy that today, we as an association are beginning to stemming both known and unknown storms. This we have achieved since January 29th when we were appointed. We have revived the reading culture, for in

stance, we hold our readings every week instead of every month. We have also activated the creative alertness in members and we have engaged in several critique sessions with books written by members and they were pleasant sessions.

We have initiated online general meetings and they have been going on well. During meetings all we discuss is the affairs of the association and how to develop content, because content matters to us most. There is no association without content, without content we as writers can not mirror the society in the global phase.

We have also cultivated the culture of bringing in authors, script writers, and people who have something to do with creativity and not charlatans who will come in and cause lots of distractions as we have had in the past. And we were getting used to it, such shall be flushed out soon, all our card carrying members are professionals and these are people who have made several landmark achievements both in Literature and in their various endeavours.

In the previous times there was no record to show that we had successful administrations in the chapter so that was an issue that bothered us as transition Committee. So we have built a mini Library at the Writers Village, where documents are kept, association documents are not for personal use. So we discouraged that bad culture, this will also make members to read from books written by other authors, to enable us enrich the noble pen profession. We have invested in books, the chapter has just purchased books worth 200,000 to enrich the library. We have placed orders for further books, written by great authors, former and retired members of the association. We cherish our work and we promote ourselves.

We also within the short time have been able to bring back the culture of respect and decorum. Looking back at our founding fathers there is this one thing that keeps inspiring me and others, the manner they served with utmost respect, even though there were National issues Prof. Chinua Achebe will simply dish it in a book like the book entitled ‘THERE WAS A COUNTRY’. There is no day I haven’t heard Nigerians refer to that book in discussing present national issues. We want authors who will actively use their inks to make positive statements and recommendations that will stand the test of time. On the issue of respect we are imbibing and instilling in young members how to respect those in the association and how conflicts can be resolved before it metamorphoses into crises.

There are a lot of other things like membership ID cards. We were able to print every member’ ID card before the festival, receipts being issued to members. We are all financial members and we have a say in the affairs of the association, unlike before, this is because the transition committee believes in inclusive service where everyone has to contribute and have a stake. Again, there is no association that survived without financial members, for the association to stand we all have to pay our annual dues and new members duly registered.

By the special grace of God come May  we shall be conducting an election that will usher in a substantive chairman and other members, members have shown good interests. I encourage more to come out and contest for positions of their choices.

ANA Abuja literary festival seems dear to you. What are the ingredients of the festival, when is it happening and the calibre of people involved?

It is very dear to us being that we are trying to correct the wrongs done in the past. It is as it is presented, it’s   literary festival, the era of jamborees are over when people were praised for doing nothing. This time first, we are honouring FCT Literature teachers who have raised the people who have promoted arts, what we have in the society of arts and culture today, we want to honour them for their Literary efforts, and to partner their schools in every event held in the chapter. We want to start making authors out of Secondary school students. I run an association of creative minds in the rural schools and we were spreading out before I was appointed transition Chairman,  this is what I am bringing to the table of ANA Abuja, since it worked for us there it will definitely work for us in the FCT.

These teachers are also coming with their students so we have a space to accommodate them. Let them come take home some memories that can never fade away in a hurry, that is the best way to nurture our young adults and children, instilling in them what gives them confidence.

The festival will also feature readings, critiquing, familiarization, and site seeing. Our members are set to explore life and arts for a better Nigeria. We need art oriented Nigerians, these are the people who know what it takes to give life to a nation in a depressive state

We have invited Ministers, DGs, National Assembly Members and friends, former President’s, former Chairmen and Secretaries both at National and States, some serving states chairmen, etc and the National President of the Association.

How much of literary confidence have you built into Abuja literary clan?

As I stated before I have a lot of confidence in the Literary clan before I was appointed. I have built confidence with my resilient disposition, attitude and talents displayed over 15 years, I have been able to make a statement with my outstanding achievements, as an author of over 20 books. I have encouraged young adults even in medical profession to write and publish books, I encouraged them to the finishing stages. I have mentored a lot of women as well, both in my office and in church, lots of them have interest in my literary mentorship and I am so proud of them and the level they have attained.

As a writer what genre of literature are you mostly known for and why?

I am a bundle of talents. First, I am presently mostly known as a Biographer, this is because funds raised from this venture are used to sponsor other books projects done by me and others.

I explore fiction, I have lots of books that are fictional, although the stories may have existed but they are creative stories. I have encouraged other young writers like Sarah Aliu, a potential medical student to write one. The Evil Plot and it was well edited content, non fictional I have written a story of the A-Z of Human trafficking, then, this will amaze you. I have written several stories of myself, I am not inspired to write my authorbiograpy but I present different sessions of my life in story books and giving them different titles and these are coming to public domain in a few months time. On  drama, I have encouraged my first son, Cos-lewis Osigbemhe to write drama, we have plans to covert it to a play to be acted. Poetry get the other genre in me activated so I am seen around with poets like Sir Eriata Oribhabor and others. I have attended their conventions and other events I have partnered them on several events.

My content is second to none because I don’t rush books and I involve the best hands in and outside the country during production period.

I have also done charity based editing for a decade because that is what my dear father did best, a great man I can never afford to drop his good legacies.

  • Adewale explores faces, figurative art

    Adewale explores faces, figurative art

Alimi Adewale, studied Mechanical Engineering and later switched over to visual art. Today he is one of the most outstanding Nigerian contemporary artists, using urban social issues to explore the face of the earth. At the moment he is exhibiting in Abuja in what he termed changing faces, new frontiers in figurative art. EDOZIE UDEZE examines the issues he explores in his art in this write-up.

NIGERIAN contemporary artists keep changing the face of the earth.  It is amazing how most of them delve into the visual from their original course of studies.  One of such amazing artists is Alimi Adewale. Adewle studied Mechanical Engineering at the University of Ilorin, Kwara State, but later vied into visual art.  This sort of professional cross-over is rare, quite amazing for many people to comprehend.

After graduation, Adewale began to attend different workshops on visual.  He deliberately did so to teach himself the rudiments of the art.  Therefore as a self-taught artist, he chose his own path.  That path is to explore urban issues, using same to delve into the modern problems of Nigeria, and beyond.

On April 30th, Adewale opened an exhibition in Abuja titled changing Faces, new frontiers, in figurative art.  The exhibition will end on the 25th June and it involves paintings, sculptures and installations.  All the works respond to global changes in materiality.  These are matters on pandemic and protests against state – sanctioned police violence all over the world.  He sees the state – controlled police as part of the siege to cage humanity, to let human beings remain in their cocoons, properly restricted; somewhat immobile.

A well-grounded artist, Adewale’s practice combines elements of minimalism and abstraction.  Through these he evokes the necessary dynamism and the intensity of the cosmopolitan environment.  From the different sources of aso-oke cloth, he creates portraits, landscapes and nudes on social lifestyle in Nigeria.  And because he loves portraits, landscapes and nudes, Adewale creates a socialites series in a mixed media form on canvases whereby he uses aso-oke cloths to totally reflect on the lifestyle of Nigerian socialites.  He does that also to explore contemporary notions of glamour in the entertainment industry, what the creative sector represents.  All these come out in more glamourous form than any other artist can demonstrate, can replicate.

He has also created a new series of wooden head sculptures which explores his deep interest in the anonymous human form and the experiential function of art.  Whatever art that comes from Adewale dwells on the serious issues that perturb Nigeria.  As the troubling issues of police brutality ravage the world, he uses sculptures, paintings and installations to tackle the menace.

He has had residences at different times in different parts of the world.  He has also exhibited at many galleries across the globe.

He had his first exhibition in 2011.  Since then he has exhibitions around the world.  These places of exhibitions and residences include Sweden, Nigeria and more.  Also in 2017 he was an artist-in-residence at the Miliki in Lagos.  He has held exhibitions at Amina Gallery, Doha, Belvedere Artspace Beirut, Galleri Astley Uttersberg, Just Africa Stockholm in Sweden, Alara in Lagos.

Adewale has equally featured in art fairs around the world with the Nil Gallery Paris.  In 2016 he took part in the Kongtepidemins residency in Sweden.  There he learnt series of forms that have today helped to shape his style.

Therefore the Abuja outing is to continue to explore what Adewale sees as some of the social nuances troubling the society.  That is why the theme is quite suggestive and soul-searching.

  • Church launches NGO for children

    Church launches NGO for children

    By Oluwatomisin Amokeoja

International Church of Christ (ICOC) Nigeria has launched Caring Hearts Initiative (CHI), which is designed to cater for the developmental needs of children between 1 to 6 years old.

At the ceremony held yesterday at the ICOC’s Missions House in Ikeja, Lagos, the initiative was flagged off with the Early Childhood Development (ECD) programme, which will assist targeted children within and outside its community to develop their full potentials.

ICOC’s Lead Evangelist, Mr. Chris Ogbonnaya admonished the church to ensure all that they do to glorify Christ and not jeopardise the purpose for which the initiative was founded.

In his words, CHI’s Programme Director, Mr Jide Ojo noted the newly incorporated charity is posed to be the “foremost in the provision of quality and endearing care for all.”

According to Ojo, 77 children from ICOC’s 11 regions in Lagos, selected through a survey, will be the first set of beneficiaries for one year.

For the first batch, he stated that N14 million, which would be sourced through members’ contributions and the public, has been budgeted to ensure that the ECD programme is implemented successfully.

He explained the programme is commencing with the children within the church community due to paucity of funds, adding that children outside would join the list of beneficiaries as they receive support from well-meaning individuals, donors and other non-governmental organisations.

“Our mission is to work for the quality of life for everyone, everywhere. It doesn’t even matter if you are not a Christian. What matters is to meet your needs,” Ojo said.

He added: “in our programming, we would be looking at issues related to families, parenting, children, gender, and other related human endeavours.

“Already, we are receiving tutoring from Hope Worldwide, South Africa for the implementation of the Early Childhood Development (ECD) programme. In all our programming, the mission of Jesus will be an integral part.”

President of the ICOC’s Board, Mr Imagbe Igbinoba, expressed happiness over the multiplier effect the initiative will have on the church community and public in the long run.

He, however, called for more support while explaining that the organisation hopes to spread its tentacles to the public and regions in other states on time.

  • EBERECHI EZE: I watched Ronaldinho’s videos day and night

EBERECHI EZE: I watched Ronaldinho’s videos day and night

A number of Crystal Palace fans have been sharing their love for star player Eberechi Eze after a story emerged on Twitter regarding the 22-year-old.

The £30,000-a-week, hotshot has been dropping off hot meals to people in need on any Sunday he has available.

@GilesyL14 shared a post on Eze where a Facebook user claimed the attacking midfielder has been quietly helping with foodbank drop-offs.

The midfielder drops hot meals off at South London churches every Sunday in his Audi 4×4

Eze, who was born in Greenwich to Nigerian parents grew up in Greenwich and has been going above and beyond to help.

In a sport blighted by selfish billionaire owners, the footballers themselves prove to be the most charitable.

Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford has publicly campaigned on homelessness and child hunger issues and has been praised for using his platform to drive societal change.

Similarly, his Manchester United teammate Juan Mata founded the charity Common Goal, an initiative that encourages professional football players and coaches to pledge at least one per cent of their salaries to a collective fund that supports football charities worldwide.

So, it appears Eze is doing his bit to help the community. Eze, who hails from Greenwich delivers food bank drops every Sunday (when he isn’t playing footy) to churches across Lewisham in his Audi 4×4.

But the volunteer helping out was perhaps not much of a football fan – as it sounded like they hadn’t heard of Crystal Palace, and even asked what division they played in.

Another volunteer helping out said in a post on Facebook: “He rocked up and saved the day in his Audi 4×4.

“My colleague met him to hand over the food before she asked him if he was in his mum’s car.

“He clarified he was in his car.

“She asked how old he was; he said 22.

“The windscreen was cracked; she asked if it was ok to drive a car like that and how it happened.

“He said, a football hit it at the training ground.”

When the volunteer quizzed Eze on who he played for, he said Crystal Palace, and they replied: “what division are they in?”

This reportedly brought a laugh from Eze, who was probably relieved not to be recognised as a Premier League star.

The volunteer posting on Facebook finally added: “Turned out every Sunday [Eze] is free; he drops hot meals for the church to people who need it in the borough.

One person said: “Bless you, great thing to do.”

    Another said: “Great work”.

A third added: “That colleague was well nosey, but thank you, Eberechi!”

    Palace fans react

It didn’t take long for @GilesyL14’s Twitter post to reach a number of Palace fans, with many heaping praise on the England Under-21 international.

@andytheeagle described his volunteering as ‘wonderful’. “OMG!”

Another @PatrickIDSDoyle wrote “Gave me goosebumps”

And the next @jdhrecruiter said “WOW”

Another fan @royhodgsonoutt shared; “You are a wonderful person, I love youuu @EbereEze10“

Growing up, he reflected on his life, saying: “There are the nice parts [of Greenwich] and the not so nice parts.

“I grew up in a not so nice part. It wasn’t the easiest life, and you don’t have as much as other kids around you.

“The first place we’d go after school is to the cage [football court]. We’d stay there till our parents called us in, not eating, playing all day and night.

“There wasn’t really anything else to do, but that’s where the love comes from.

“[At the time], you don’t realise it’s actually how you’re learning your trade.”

As for his giving and sacrificing habit, Eze said he learnt it from his mum, whom he called ‘a living example.’

    On field

On field, Eze is a also rare talent. Rare in that he controls a game from midfield by playing like a winger.

Recently, Eze dictated an entire contest by dribbling around and through a helpless Sheffield United side. Two such runs saw him create one goal – for Christian Benteke – and score another.

On first viewing, it looks as if Eze belongs out wide, such is his skill-set. But that would be to conform, to limit his impact to one side of the pitch. Rather, by positioning him in the middle of it, Eze’s influence is multiplied.

In a related interview with Crystal Palace TV, Eze said his showmanship moves are a creation of his football idol growing up. “I don’t think there’s anything anyone can show me now that I haven’t seen of him of Ronaldinho. I’ve watched so many videos of him… I want someone to show me a video that I haven’t seen.”

The man in question is Ronaldinho and Eze is speaking with the excitement of an eight-year-old boy, enamoured by his idol’s ability to entertain.

It’s not such a jump from that young boy to Eze today, with the Palace midfielder retaining much of his formative wonder for the great Brazilian.

“Honestly,” he continues, “we’d come home from school or whatever we were doing, go on the computer and just type in ‘Ronaldinho’. Any video we saw, whether it be him playing football or doing whatever, we just watched it.

“There’s probably no video you could show us that we hadn’t seen before. Even now, I type in ‘Ronaldinho’ and still watch him. That’s how much of an impact he’s had on me.”

It’s all too easy to inflate a footballer’s affection for another player beyond reality, with most naming their generation’s prescribed idols when asked. In today’s game, that starts with Zinedine Zidane, moves on to both Ronaldo and Ronaldinho, continues with Thierry Henry and, inevitably amongst the Academy ranks, and ends with Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo.

But Eze’s reverence for Ronaldinho extends beyond platitudes trotted out to the press: a fascination with football’s ability to enthral was birthed by his example.

Today, as Eze glides across the found challenge. The answer, again, lay in his earliest years.

“The way you’re brought up and the resilience you get from playing in the cage and from experiencing different things – it sort of numbs the feeling of someone else’s opinion of you. You’ve got control of that.

“Over the past year I’ve learnt that you can’t let your emotions dictate the way you behave and the way you act. More often than not I think the more consistent you stay, the easier it’ll be to handle anything that comes.”

Today, crucially, Eze has got back to enjoying football – it’s how he regained his spot at QPR and secured his first Premier League move. Unburdened by the tide of opinion, pressure of academy football and stress of over thinking, Eze can play how he wants; like an eight-year-old boy inspired by Ronaldinho. Just like he’s meant to.

    Roy Hodgson

Manager Roy Hodgson insists Crystal Palace will do everything in their power to fend off interest in Eberechi Eze, as he insists ‘I wasn’t contemplating that it was an investment that would only last one season’

Eze’s influence is even greater now he is playing in the middle and his impact is not limited

He was 80 yards from goal when he collected the ball, evaded John Lundstram’s flying challenge and floated upfield before finishing from inside the area, albeit via John Fleck’s attempted block.

Hodgson insists Crystal Palace will do everything in their power to fend off interest in Eze, as he insists ‘I wasn’t contemplating that it was an investment that would only last one season’

The attacking midfielder has enjoyed a promising first season in the Premier League following his arrival from QPR in August 2020 in a deal worth £20milliion.

On potential suitors trying to prise Eze away from Selhurst Park come the end of the season, Hodgson said: ‘It has not really occurred to me as we’ve only just signed him. It was quite an investment for our club to pay 15 (million pounds) and then five (million pounds) in add-ons – that’s quite a big investment for us.

‘I am pretty sure the club will work very, very hard to make sure any interest in him will be warded off because we bought him into the football club to play for us and to make us better.

‘We didn’t bring him into the club to make some small profit on a transfer at the end of the first season. It is his first season since coming from the Championship and you expect people to need a bit of time to get fully adjusted to play at this level, and we are delighted with him.’

While victory at Bramall Lane ensured Palace were safe from relegation, the Blades have long been resigned to their fate. They will be playing in the Sky Bet Championship again next season.

Eze is a player who should be spending the month of May competing for more than the mere renewal of top-flight status, and that day will come. That Palace will be spending a ninth straight season in the Premier League is all thanks to the mercurial player with Nigeria ancestry.

‘We preach to him that we want to see that quality,’ said Hodgson. ‘We will never criticise him if he tries it and it doesn’t come off.

‘Today, he was bold when he got the ball. He drove us forward. He got his reward with a goal and assist, and we got ours with the win.’

Eze is an England Under 21 regular but has not featured in many conversations ahead of the European Championship. On this evidence, he is perhaps one or two injuries away from elevation to Gareth Southgate’s senior ranks.

  • Dennis Rodman @ 60: The mad life of ‘Bad Boy’

Dennis Rodman @ 60: The mad life of ‘Bad Boy’

On May 13, it was time to officially celebrate the 60th birthday of an NBA icon. You either love him or you hate him, but there is no denying that Dennis Rodman was ahead of his time. Rodman is a five-time NBA champion who played with a type of swagger and personality that we haven’t seen since. With nicknames like “Dennis the Menace” or “The Worm,” Rodman will be remembered on the court for his wild hair colors, tattoos, and piercings; his “bad boy” personality and sensational rebounding skills; and his ability to guard all five players on the opposing team.

Speaking of bad boys, Dennis Rodman was a part of the intimidating Detroit Piston “Bad Boys” in the late 1980s. As a part of the team, he played alongside Bill Laimbeer, Isaiah Thomas, and Kevin McHale, just to name a few. Rodman was a key part of the team’s physical and defensive-oriented style of play, which eventually led to their infamous nickname.

Meanwhile, Rodman went on to have even more success with the San Antonio Spurs and the Chicago Bulls. Most probably remember him from winning three straight championships with Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen as members of the Bulls from 1996 to 1998.

But when it is all said and done, Dennis Rodman is a Hall of Famer who was ahead of his time. Standing at 6’7″, not only was he a great passer and screener, he was pulling down 20 rebounds a game and he could also guard both point guards and centers. If he had a more developed jump shot, Rodman would have been exactly the kind of position-less athlete that teams look for in the modern-day NBA.

For as memorable as he was on the court, Dennis Rodman’s “bad boy” antics have followed him off the court as well.

It is no secret that he went through three separate divorces in a 15-year span. Rodman was also known to have owed nearly $1 million in child support at one point. Legal troubles also got the best of the lockdown defender. In his post-NBA life, Rodman has struggled with alcohol abuse along with gambling issues as well. Most recently, however, Rodman has been doing his best to keep his name alive. He is famously very close friends with the dictator of the communist country of North Korea. Word around the block is that Kim Jong-Un is a big fan of professional basketball.

At this point, it seems like Dennis Rodman doesn’t really care about what people think of him. He will likely always be viewed as the “bad boy” of the NBA and it seems like he is just fine with that. Rodman is an enigma in every sense of the word.

Obviously, The Worm is well established as one of sport’s all-time great mavericks, but Netflix’s fantastic series, The Last Dance, shone a spotlight on Rodman earlier this year.

The Last Dance documentary gives a deep dive into Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls for the first time

While he has a list of controversies longer than his go-go gadget arms, it’s worth noting he was one of the greatest basketball players of his generation and one of the finest defensive players in the history of the game.

As a five-time NBA champion and two-time Defensive Player of the Year, his influence was obvious. He was one of the best on-ball defenders you’ll ever see; nimble and aggressive in a 6ft 7in frame with an engine that wouldn’t quit.

But, of course, there was more to Rodman than basketball.

He really found his voice as a part of the ‘Bad Boy’ Detroit Pistons in the late 1980s and early 90s to the point where, in 1987, he suggested the great Larry Bird was overrated and only won the MVP award three times because he was white.

in the second round in 1986 and after barely featuring initially, he quickly complimented the tough, physical established stars the Pistons had.

That led to back-to-back titles in ’89 and ’90. After that, Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls took over and Rodman’s personal life became more prevalent.

Going AWOL and a deal with Madonna

In 1992, Pistons coach Chuck Daly, who Rodman considered a surrogate father, resigned in May. As a result, the player skipped the pre-season camp and was fined $68,000.

Despite his obvious talent, not many in the NBA wanted to touch Rodman. The San Antonio Spurs took a chance on him in 1993, but that didn’t even last two seasons before Rodman, a star clearly acting out and getting ejected regularly, needed a new home again.

Dennis Rodman, Scottie Pippen and Michael Jordan led one of the greatest teams ever when they played for the Chicago Bulls

Before he headed to Chicago to play with Jordan and Scottie Pippen, Rodman had an intense six-month relationship with Madonna who he claims offered him $20m if he could impregnate her in one phone call.

“She said, ‘Dennis, you know that I’m ovulating,’” he told American radio show The Breakfast Club in 2019.

“I said, ‘What is that?’ I was trying to f*** with her, you know?”, he explained.

“I said, ‘I’ll be there in five hours.”

Rodman said he was ‘rolling the dice’ in Las Vegas at the time of the call and flew to New York in a private jet the singer sent him to be with her.

During his time with Electra, he took a 48-hour vacation from playing for the Bulls and took her and an entourage to Las Vegas. He partied so hard that Michael Jordan – one of the biggest superstars on the planet at the time – actually flew to Vegas to get him out of bed and take him to practice. It’s hard to even make a modern-day comparison of that.

During his time with the Bulls, they appreciated Rodman for what he could bring to their team. He is, arguably, the greatest rebounder the game has seen – he notched 34 in a game in 1992 and grabbed more than 30 on four other occasions – and his defensive presence took Chicago to another level.

For all of MJ’s greatness, Rodman was a key component to their second three-peat of the 90s in 1996, ’97 and ’98.

In exchange for his defensive prowess, the Bulls had to give Rodman just enough room to express himself off the court. But there were plenty of examples of that spilling over to game time, too.

A prime instance saw him kick a court-side photographer in the groin. Rodman wasn’t provoked, he was just frustrated with how the game was going. He was suspended for 11 games and fined $25,000 for that, the league’s harshest punishment in 20 years at the time.

The year before that he had head-butted an official as frustration struck him once again. He refused to leave the game and he went on a rampage before exiting the arena. It would have been outrageous for anyone else not named Dennis Rodman, but the visual of his coach Phil Jackson finding the whole episode funny said it all. He was suspended for six games and fined $20,000.

SWWAFON seeks more women participation in politics

South-west Women Arise for Nigeria (SWWAFON) at its maiden awareness project ‘One Nigeria’, in Lagos on Friday called on fellow women across the country to wake up and participate in politics.

They expressed dissatisfaction with the current state of the nation, following the recent killings, banditry, kidnapping, economic recession and high rate of food prices in the country.

The women stated that if women continue to fold their hands and the country is allowed to continue this way, it will remain unbearable for parents and guardians to give their wards the best of life.

The group dissociated itself from being a politically motivated one, but appreciated those in government giving women the opportunity of serving in their cabinets.

The Convener, Mrs Bolanle Idowu, who spoke extensively at the programme, said only peace can guarantee progress. Once peace is gone, everything else hangs in the balance until peace is restored, breaking up as a country isn’t an option as Nigeria can still work as one.

She said “it is clear that a lot of people are aggrieved, owing to the myriads of challenges, especially insecurity-related, bedeviling the nation. Thousands of lives have been lost to needless and inhuman acts of bandits who get emboldened by the day. Kidnapping now seems to be a most lucrative job, aside from oil and gas. Criminal minded individuals even connive with others to kidnap themselves just to squeeze money out of their relatives.”

“But in all of this, we must remember that beyond politics, no government would watch its administration crumble or deliberately sponsor or encourage bandits and terrorists to shed so much blood as to warrant a state of emergency that could lead to any counter-action.”

“We also resolved to single out Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State as a role model governor that has recognised the importance of women in nation building. This is the reason education has not been interrupted in the state since he assumed power and the state is judged the safest in the North.”

“He is the first Governor ever to appoint a female ADC in the history of Nigeria. His SSG is also a woman. More important to add that all the Vice Chairmen of the local governments in the state are women. Youths are also doing wonders in the state.”

“This is why we are saying that the problem of Nigeria is not about political parties but about the person who can do the job and take us out of the quagmire.” She said.

The Guest Speaker, Mrs Hafsat Abiola-Costello who is The President, Women in Africa, beckons on women to arise and make their voices heard in Nigeria.

”This is time for women to make a change in the country. Women have a big responsibility in nation building.

”It is time our hospitals, roads, schools got better. When our infrastructure is in good shape, these would be advantageous to our children and future generations,” she said.

She appealed to all South West women to join other Nigerian women in discussing the future of the nation.

“There is a lot of crisis in the country, so it is time for us to make this country a better place,” she said.

Reacting to the outstanding performance of Gov Yahaya Bello, some women in the gathering urged him to declare for President, saying that they would support him and others like him across Nigeria.

Police nab five suspected vandals with trucks of looted railway sleepers

    By AbdulGafar Alabelewe, Kaduna

Kaduna State Police Command said it has arrested five suspected railway track vandals with two trucks loaded with locomotive railway sleepers.

The Command’s Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Mohammad Jalige who disclosed this in a statement on Saturday, however dismissed the rumour that the incident affected the Kaduna-Abuja train services.

ASP Jalige said the five suspects were arrested last Thursday at Dalle Village of Jema’a local government area of Kaduna state.

According to the Police Spokesman, “the attention of the Kaduna State Police Command has been drawn to a viral video and pictures of a vandalized rail track on social media platforms that are being attributed to the Abuja –Kaduna rail track.

“The Command wishes to clarify and allay the fear of all train users that the said video and pictures have nothing to do with Abuja- Kaduna rail track, as the train services are ongoing without any hindrance.

“However, information available to the Command has it that the video and the pictures in circulation emanated from Enugu State where NSCDC Operatives of Enugu Command apprehended and equally paraded some rail track vandals. Hence, it shouldn’t be attributed to Kaduna-Abuja Rail track.

“In a related development, the Kaduna Police Command had on the 13th May, 2021 acted on a reliable information and succeeded in arresting five (5) suspected rail trail vandals at Dalle Village of Jema’a LGA of Kaduna state and recovered two trucks loaded with locomotive railway sleepers.

“The suspects are currently undergoing interrogation and effort is being intensified with a view to identifying all people involved in the destruction of critical national infrastructure.

“The general public is hereby advised to disregard the video in circulation attributing it to the Kaduna rail track as the two incidents has no direct link whatsoever to the popular Kaduna-Abuja railway service,” Jalige said.
