‘Adedamola’ a tribute to African music legends – Fireboy DML

Fireboy DML’s highly anticipated fourth album ‘Adedamola’ is a love tribute to African music’s rich history, featuring collaboration with legendary singer Lagbaja amongst others.

In a recent interview with Apple Music Africa Now, Fireboy credited Olamide, YBNL label boss, for suggesting the collaboration with Seun Kuti, describing the experience as “amazing” and “funny.”

“Big shout out to Olamide, one of the A&Rs on the album. When we worked on the song together in the studio, he advised me, ‘I hear Seun Kuti on this,’ and the moment he said that it just clicked.

He continued: “I just imagined him in one very dark room, spotlight on him, with the sax just blowing away, and it just made perfect sense to me. He’s a very cool guy, Seun Kuti. Amazing person, very funny, down to earth, and really hilarious. He has a very colourful personality and it was fun making the record with him.”

Fireboy also revealed that one track is dedicated to Afropop icon Wande Coal, inspired by his 2015-2016 records.

He aimed to create a song that Wande Coal would love, as a tribute to his influence.

“I recorded that in 2021, I think, in SPINALL’s studio in Lagos. I was like, ‘When the time is right, this record will come out’—it just made a lot of sense. I listened to the beat once and it just immediately took me back to 2015-2016, when I was listening to one of Wande Coal’s records.

“It just sounded like something Wande Coal would love, something he would have loved to have spit on. I was like, ‘What would Wande of 2016 do? Let me just try that.’ It’s sort of like a tribute to him; [everyone] knows I respect him so much”, Fireboy explained.

The album is a blend of nostalgic and contemporary sounds, showcasing Fireboy’s growth while honoring African music’s pioneers.

By collaborating with legends, Fireboy demonstrates his respect for the genre’s history and commitment to preserving its legacy.

“This whole album is more like a tribute to all the legends that shaped African music over the years, and also a testament to myself, of course, and my growth over the years,” he said.

“It depends on your music and where it has gotten, that’s what your price is going to be,” Shallipopi says.

Shallipopi also emphasised that Nigerian artists who achieve similar streaming numbers as American artists should charge comparable fees.

He also disputed the notion that Nigerian artists have overpriced themselves out of the local market, instead suggesting that artists should charge what they believe they deserve based on their success.

“If your music has gotten the same stream as an American artist, you should be charging the way they charge but if your stream is not up to that you cannot overcharge”, he wrote.
