  • Scars of marriage of rancour

    Scars of marriage of rancour

    Title:  Archive of Scars

    Author: Olumide Adekanmi

    Reviewer:  Edozie Udeze

If the title of this book, Archive of Scars, sounds scary enough, the story itself is more emotional and touching.  The story is basically on the plight of women.  It is the story of Gracia, first and foremost.  It is her story and by extension the story of other women involved in this sort of tale that touches on the soul of a society that looks down on women.  Yet still, it is the story of a woman who chooses to marry out of selfishness.

It only takes a village dance of the Bogan Carnival for Gracia to forget herself.  In the process of the dance, she throws herself at a man who is not really qualified to marry her nor any other lady for that matter.  But here we are; Olumide Adekanmi, the author weaves a pathetic story around the issue of not all that glitters that is gold.  Jerry, the man who marries Gracia because he is a clerk in a university in a city shows how young beautiful women love what is ephemeral.  After the dance, the Prince of the town makes the foremost choice.  After he has chosen the best lady for himself, the remaining ladies are free to choose or allow other young men in the crowd to marry them.

And so Gracia, eager to go to the city, where it glitters, where life is on the fast lane, agrees that Jerry becomes her husband.  But Jerry ends up a beast, a poorly trained fellow who has all the vices of a brute.  A loose fellow, Jerry turns this wonderful, beautiful lady a into dummy, wasting her life, making her almost a rag and a nonentity.  So from trying or hoping to be a city wife, Gracia ends up a disgraced woman.  Breeding children for Jerry in quick succession, Gracia suddenly runs into mud waters.

There is no money to shoulder the responsibility of a home.  Jerry is reluctant to improve himself or even try to save money from his meager salary for the sake of the female children his woman has given to him.  Gracia is totally pent up, frustrated.  The anger is palpable.  The frustration is in the home, spreading like a virus.  Hunger tears at the fabric of the domestic stability as they become the scorn of others.  Jerry turns to gambling.  He finds peace in the midst of chaos.  He resorts to drinking without break, involving himself deeper and deeper with boys of no serious future.  Gracia complains, bears the brunt as she takes care of the children almost alone.  Then she begins to muster the courage to look for an alternative means of livelihood.

As she begins to make money and reaching out to other people for help and succour, Jerry turns his hatred and envy towards her.  Indeed the story turns scary henceforth.  All pity and sympathy suddenly turns to Gracia.  She cannot relax at home.  She has no home or anyone to run to at all.  Jerry begins to steal her business money rendering her capital useless and inadequate.  Now the tension in the home builds to a point of suspicion, mistrust, rancour, hate and abuse.  Husband and wife have gradually become cat and dog.  And then the children begin to bear the consequences of a home where peace and trust have suddenly disappeared.

The story of Gracia is commonplace in Nigeria and in most other societies world-over.  It takes the courage of a good story teller to build on it and make it as fresh as ever.  The sub-title of the story or what can be termed alternative theme like the author noted which is: The Heavy Burdens of  life shot at a Woman, truly justifies the intricate nature of this tale.  The author states it like this: “Gracia had convinced herself that she could not change Jerry.  He was not intentionally about life to confront its challenges or face the dictations life was bringing their way…  Jerry was obviously complacent with his status and saw that he did not need to shoot for a better life”.

Adekanmi is not done yet.  He is disturbed that instead of the young university clerk, Jerry, to be ambitious by furthering his education like some other people of his ilk, he chooses to be laid back.  Now here is the thinking of his wife, Gracia about the Jerry she married.  “Whenever she thought about him, she wished to make him understand that life only favours the brave.  She hoped he knew that if you do not gamble, you cannot win.  It is pointless to confront him anymore.  Every attempt to make him see reason with her failed woefully.  It only degenerated into argument and rage.  It did not resolve anything”.

It is clear that this marriage is not made to work.  With four daughters, a set of twins, Jerry is not moved to show the necessary concerns for the welfare of his kids.  But  Gracia is bent on looking for a plausible way to better her fortunes.  While her second daughter, Tonia, connives with her father Jerry to steal Gracia blind, Gracia is forced to escape from home.  Now with three daughters, she is a bit relieved to seek ways to grow her bakery business and ensure her daughters get the best out of life.  As she prepares to improve she is moved to study law.  Then her first daughter Joyce mingles with one of the bad boys of the area and becomes pregnant.  Joyce is just 18 years of age.  And so the story takes a fresh twist.

But the author does not build the suspense so well.  The flat way in which he introduces this dimension does not make it sound too good and convincing in the story.  Anyhow, Gracia becomes a lawyer, nonetheless, Joyce also enrolls as an undergraduate.  But the sequence of the story now becomes too ordinary, too familiar, more of an ordinary tale.  The language is continuously boring.  The style of the tale does not vary to give it more impetus. The narrative style is inconsistent, some portions told in past tense, and some in present tense.

There is this incoherence in the manner of dialogue.  Dialogues in a prose fiction form their own paragraphs.  The author does not follow or conform with this long established tradition.  And so it gives the novel some sort of formless form.   Yet it is gratifying that Gracia eventually rose to become a Judge.  Yes, she did.  But her zeal to teach women to rise up to become important is the core of this story.  It is a story for women and for people who may be in dire need of encouragement.  The greatest encouragement is the one you give to yourself.

Gracia sees all these.  She says no to laziness, to the status of a second class citizen.  Even though she rises to the height of her profession, and loses her life in the process she lived her life to the maximum.  The book needs serious editing by professional book editors. This will help to get the book to the level it ought to be.  The author also has to tinker with a more engrossing title to make the book more enticing and attractive.

Let him also re-order the narrative style to conform with the usual norm.  Otherwise, this is a story most women aspiring to marry or intending to build a home, need to read to avoid all the avoidable misdeeds of a home where the man is the czar or a boss of no serious value.

  • Sculpting a special gele

    Sculpting a special gele

    • By Boluwatife Owolabi

Bunmi Babatunde is an artist who has done lots of artworks one of which is a bronze sculpture representation he called Oni Gele. From the interview I had with him, he mentioned that the artwork is a sterilized wok of a Yoruba woman with her hair tie which led to the name Oni Gele.

He said the artwork is a story of the social custom of our women because gele is a major part of the Yorubas’ mode of dressing as it is also a representation of the culture and tradition of the land. He further explains that the artwork is sterilized because no neck of a human being can be like this and that he has given his own meaning, signature, and the way he wants then story to be told to his artwork.

He said women use gele for ceremonies like birthday parties, burial ceremony, naming ceremony, marriage, chieftaincy (Iyalode) and many more. Gele has a significant role in different way they are made. Some mothers will tie their gele in a way that will attract the attention of the people around and that is the way the culture and tradition continue to grow in the form of the attires and the head tie.

The colour used in producing the sculpture is bluish black and the colour is giving the aso oke, adire and more that people wear. They do not have one colour and most times when we see gele they have either two or more colour.

Babatunde is also the chairman of the Universal Studios of Art (USA). He is one of the most known sculptors in Nigeria. His ability in organizing and running USA over the years, has made him a good administrator, father and artist. He loves mentoring young artists as well. USA is located within the premises of the National Theatre, Iganmu, Lagos.

  • Travel firm to position Qatar as prime destination

Travel firm to position Qatar as prime destination

Diamonds and Pearls Travels, is set to reposition Qatar as a prime destination for Nigerian travellers, according to its co-founders Mrs. Wonuola Olatunde-Lamidi and Mr. David Olatunde-David.

They said to achieve this, the travel company is using the innovative approach of experiences and story-telling rather than logistics.

“Qatar offers a balance of modernity and tradition that appeals to a wide range of Nigerian travellers. From budget to luxury travellers, there is something for everyone. There are also activities to do in Qatar that will engage all ages,” Mrs. Olatunde-Lamidi explained. Mr. David-0Lamidi added, “Our goal has always been to make Qatar an on-the-mind destination for Nigerians. While we demystify travel, we do this by telling stories that go beyond itineraries. We emphasize the experiences, the memories, and sense of stepping into a country that feels like the future.”

Mrs. Olatunde-Lamidi said by merging destination branding with cultural alignment, Diamonds and Pearls Travels has become the loudest and most authoritative voice on Qatar in Nigeria, showing that tourism promotion can go beyond transactions to become a matter of storytelling and legacy building, turning travel into a symbol of lifestyle and aspiration, glamorous, and accessible while simultaneously cultivating the sense of prestige that appeals to Nigerian audience.

She said to achieve this, the company has received strategic support from Qatar Airways, Discover Qatar, and Qatar Tourism, helping the company to strengthen its position and deliver seamless, trusted travel experience.

In Nigeria’s fast growing outbound travel sector, Diamonds and Pearls Travels has emerged as a clear leader in shaping perceptions of Qatar as premier destination. The company has positioned itself at the forefront of this conversation, consistently driving interest in the gulf state setting apart as one of the most influential tour operators selling Qatar to Nigerian travellers.

She explained that while many travel agencies compete largely on price and availability, Diamonds and Pearls Travel has shifted the narrative by selling not just itineraries but a vision of Qatar as a destination to be explored. The company’s messaging often frames the country as a place operating on a different timeline, presenting a ‘24th century nation’ whose infrastructure, cultural investments, and luxury offerings are ahead of the rest of the aspirational destinations that combine prestige, innovation, and cultural depth. At the same time, the company has made sure not to limit its focus to the upper class, by offering packages that appeal to both premium and budget conscious travellers, Diamonds and Pearls Travels has ensured that Qatar is positioned as a destination open to all.

According to Mr. David Olatunde-Lamidi, the company is predicated on a deep understanding of its audience, saying in Nigeria, travel is often driven by the pursuit of status and unique experience and Diamonds and Pearls Travels has been able to fit Qatar’s image of gleaming skylines, futuristic architecture, luxury shopping, and access to world-class sporting and cultural events with the aspirations of its clientele.

He explained that rather than promoting standard tourism packages, the company has emphasized experiences. “From luxury desert safaris to curated cultural tours, we have positioned Qatar as more than a transit hub but instead a lifestyle destination. Increasingly, Nigerians are organizing destination events such as birthdays, weddings in Qatar, while more companies are hosting high powered meetings, conferences, and executive retreats. This has further strengthened Diamonds and Pearls’ push to promote Qatar as a destination for Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions (MICE), leisure, sports and more.

“The company’s marketing efforts have been consistent and highly visible through collaborations with airlines, tourism boards, hospitality partners, Diamonds and Pearls Travels has created a network that reassures travellers and simplifies the process of engaging with destination that might otherwise feel unfamiliar. Their campaigns are prominent across social media and events’ platforms, projecting an image of Qatar as modern, glamorous, and accessible with simultaneously cultivating the sense of prestige that appeals to Nigerian audiences with strategic support from Qatar Airways, Discover Qatar, and Qatar Tourism, the company has been able to strengthen its position and deliver seamless, trusted travel experiences,” Olatunde-Lamidi added

  • Filmmaker Itegboje takes sci-fi film BAM BAM to TIFF market screening

Filmmaker Itegboje takes sci-fi film BAM BAM to TIFF market screening

Nigerian filmmaker, Tolu Itegboje, is set to showcase his latest short film, BAM BAM, at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) Industry Market Screening on September 7, 2025, marking a milestone moment for Nollywood’s growing presence in global cinema.

The short, which merges coming-of-age storytelling with speculative sci-fi, is among the few Nigerian films to explore the genre. Its TIFF screening will present an opportunity for international buyers, programmers, and financiers to experience a fresh perspective from African cinema.

BAM BAM tells the story of Babatunde, a gifted but introverted teenager who finds companionship in Bam Bam, a mysterious, almost otherworldly figure that understands him in ways no one else does. But when Babatunde falls for a classmate, the advice and influence of Bam Bam begin to blur the lines between trust and fear.

With the tagline, “Some lessons can’t be programmed”, the film explores themes of adolescence, self-doubt, love, and the emotional weight of growing up in a digital age.

Director Itegboje has steadily carved a niche for himself as a unique voice in Nigerian cinema. He is best known for Awon Boyz, his Netflix documentary that examined life on the streets of Lagos, and has directed award-winning shorts such as The Amazing Grace Church of God.

A graduate of the London Film School, Itegboje has spent over a decade working across advertising, branded content, and narrative filmmaking. Through his production company, LSW Films, he continues to bridge Nigerian culture with universal cinematic themes.

“This film is deeply personal to me,” Itegboje said ahead of the TIFF screening. “It’s about doubt, love, and the strange comfort technology can provide in our loneliest moments. Sci-fi is rarely explored in Nigerian cinema, and I wanted to show how universal the genre can be when rooted in our culture. BAM BAM is the beginning of a trilogy, and my hope is that audiences everywhere will see themselves in Babatunde’s search for connection.”

BAM BAM reunites Itegboje with cinematographer Kagho Idhebor, with whom he previously collaborated on The Amazing Grace Church of God and Awon Boyz. The film is produced by Oge Obasi, known for the critically acclaimed Mami Wata. Editing was handled by Chuka Ejorh and Laughter Ephraim, while renowned Nigerian composer Ré Olunuga scored the film.

The cast features Ambrose Nwoga as Babatunde, Kelechi Udegbe as Bam Bam, Victory Eyong as Inara, Emmanuel Oluwatunmise as SK, and Nimi Adekanmbi as Oyinade.

TIFF is regarded as one of the world’s leading film festivals, attracting distributors, programmers, financiers, and major studios. For Nigerian filmmakers, it represents not only a chance to share their stories with international audiences but also to position themselves within the global film conversation.

With BAM BAM, Itegboje introduces a bold new direction for Nollywood—one that dares to step into less-charted genres while staying rooted in cultural authenticity.

  • Trino unveils content acquisition, sales division

Trino unveils content acquisition, sales division

In a strategic move designed to empower young creative entrepreneurs and independent producers across Africa, Trino Motion Pictures, has established its Content Acquisition and Sales Division. It is also to give such stories global visibility, according to Managing Director Trino Motion Pictures, Mr. Uche Okocha.

He described the initiative as more than a business expansion, but ‘a mission, a calling, and a movement’ to reposition African content on the world stage.

According to him, the new division will represent independent producers in major international markets for film and television content, while also investing in global sales infrastructure to strengthen Africa’s film and TV ecosystem.

Okocha, who spoke in Lagos on Tuesday, said, “African stories are not just underrepresented globally; they are undervalued and underestimated. Our producers are creating magic every day with grit, grace and passion, but many lack the bridge between powerful content and global visibility. That is where we come in—not as competitors, but as collaborators.”

He stressed that the new unit will work to source content from rising talents and independent voices who may not have access to established industry infrastructure, ensuring their productions reach international platforms and audiences.

Addressing distribution partners, Okocha said the company’s intention is to complement, not compete: “Your work has laid the groundwork; ours is to add fresh bricks, new lanes, and more travellers on the journey. We are here to widen the highway, not reinvent the wheel.”

The initiative, he explained, is aimed at ensuring that African cinema and TV productions gain rightful recognition and market share globally.

“To the storytellers, the unseen artists crafting cinematic gems in silence—this is your call to action. We are here to scout, support and sell your content with the respect it deserves,” Okocha said.

He called on global partners to embrace African creativity, noting that the continent is a powerhouse of culture and cinematic excellence.

“With this bold step, our goal is simple.

“From Lagos to Los Angeles, from Accra to Amsterdam, from Nairobi to New York, we want Africa on every screen.”

Okocha noted that Trino Motion Pictures has distinguished itself through its operational advantage, particularly in access to high-end equipment and studio infrastructure.

“We have a library of scripts and have built a database of over 400 writers. We have also engaged in partnerships to ensure our business advances on both local and global scales,” he said.

The event also featured the graduation ceremony of the first cohort of the maiden edition of the International Sales and Distribution Executives (ISDE) programme, organised by Trino Motion Pictures in collaboration with the Nigerian International Film Summit (NIFS).

The 12 graduands received their certificates after completing the programme, which was designed to address a critical gap in the entertainment industry by equipping professionals with expertise in international sales, aggregation, licensing, and distribution.

Commending the initiative, one of the participants, Daleshawn Butler, described the platform as one of the best in the country.

Butler said, “We appreciate the entire process of the training and we say thank you.”

Meanwhile, Ms. Ijeoma Onah, Founder of NIFS, underscored the importance of investing in capacity building in the entertainment industry.

She urged intending participants to look out for the next edition of the training, which would be announced soon.

Onah disclosed that the platform would sponsor no fewer than five individuals to France in October to gain additional knowledge, while eight sound engineers would also be supported to travel for training.

“We do hope that our interactions yield measurable outcomes. We really need to invest in capacity to improve Africans’ skill set in the entertainment industry,” she said.

Ace comedian, Ogechi Nwanevu Cyril, popularly known as Pencil, has announced that the 10th edition of his comedy show, “Pencil Unbroken,” will take place on September 21, 2025, at the prestigious Eko Hotel Convention Center, Lagos.

In a press statement, Pencil revealed that this year’s edition will take the event to a whole new level.

“It’s not just about comedy anymore. We’re mixing it up with music, live performances, and a stage setup that will wow the audience. This year’s vibe is different — more like a full experience than just a comedy show,” he said.

He disclosed that award-winning singer Teni will headline the show alongside him.

“Teni is pure energy. She connects with the crowd in a way that’s real and unfiltered, just like comedy does. She’s versatile, loved by everybody, and brings that spark we wanted for this edition. Pairing her music with the comedy lineup felt like the perfect match,” Pencil added.

Reflecting on the journey from the first edition to the upcoming 10th anniversary, Pencil said the driving force has always been the audience.

“It’s their laughter, their reactions, and the way they keep asking for more every year. That’s what keeps me going. From the start, the dream was to create something Nigerians could be proud of, and seeing the support grow each edition has been my biggest motivation,” he said.
