    The term Big Brother originated from George Orwell’s novel, ‘Nineteen Eighty-Four’ with its theme of continuous oppressive surveillance.

    In Nineteen Eighty-Four, the character, Big Brother, serves as a God-like figure to the fiction citizens of Oceania.

    He is a symbol of power and seen as an all- knowing figure gazing into the lives of every citizen from posters that read “Big Brother Is Watching You”.

    Big Brother replaces the love of all things in citizens’ lives.

    The show’s format has since been copied in over forty countries, including Nigeria, Brazil, Bulgaria, Germany, Italy, Spain, India, United Kingdom and USA.

    It also used to be in Australia but was axed in 2008.

    Since its inception, Big Brother shows has been criticised following reports of “HIB” (Harassment, Intimidation, and Bullying), violence in the house, obscene language, breach of integrity and the physical and mental strain of appearing on the series.

    Here are other things to know about the Franchise:

    * Johannes Hendrikus Hubert “John” de Mol Jr, is a Dutch media tycoon and television producer. In 1997, he founded the highly popular reality television series Big Brother with his eponymous production company called John de Mol Produkties. He also founded The Voice, the new reality competition series in 2010.

    * Big Brother series was first aired in 1999 on Veronica in the Netherlands.

    * In the first season the house was very basic. Although essential amenities such as running water, furniture and a limited ration of food were provided, luxury items were often forbidden.

    This added a survivalist element to the show, increasing the potential for social tension. Later series provided a modern house for the contest with a Jacuzzi, sauna, VIP suite, loft and other luxuries.

    * In July 5, 2000, the series was bought by CBS for an estimated $20 million. The American version premiered with ten housemates.

    *In most countries that have produced Big Brother, the contestants have been known as “housemates”; however in the American and Canadian version they are referred to as “houseguests”.

    *Eddie McGee was the winner of Big Brother 1 (US) as well as the first winner in Big Brother History. He received 59% of America’s vote after lasting 88 days inside the Big Brother House and won the $500,000 grand prize.

    *The first season of Big Brother Africa started on May 25, 2003 and ended on September 7 of the same year, lasting 106 days, with Cherise Makubalo being crowned the very first winner of the show. Mark Pilgrim was the host.

    *The first season of the show first in Nigeria aired on DStv Channel 37 from March 5 to June 4, 2006 with 12 to 14 contestants live in an isolated house and compete for a large cash prize worth $58,252.43 equivalent to N21million. In a twist to the game, two new contestants were introduced on Day 23, much to the excitement of the remaining housemates.

    *The first winner of Big Brother Nigeria is Katung Aduwak, a native of Zonkwa in Kaduna state.

    *In the first Big Brother Nigeria edition, Ebuka was the most popular housemate for several weeks into the show. He was widely believed to emerge the winner but was the seventh housemate to be evicted. Many viewers blame the Joe’s Fan Club (JFC) for his eviction. Joe himself was soon evicted from the show.

    *Big Brother Naija second edition with the theme ‘Gobbe’ started on 22 January 2017 and was slated to end after 78 days.

    * Big Brother Naija with the theme Double Wahala is the third season of the Nigerian version of the reality show Big Brother. It was launched on 28 January 2018.

    *From a sociological and demographic perspective, Big Brother allows an analysis of how people react when forced into close confinement with people outside their comfort zone (with different opinions or ideals, or from a different socioeconomic group).

    *To win the final cash prize, a contestant must survive periodic (usually weekly) evictions and be the last housemate or houseguest remaining in the compound by the series’ conclusion.

  • BBNaija 2019: Isilomo slams evicted housemates over Tacha’s body, mouth odour claim

    Ex-Big Brother Naija 2019 housemate, Isilomo, has slammed fellow ex-housemates Kimoprah and Ella for claiming that Tacha has body and mouth odour.

    In an Instagram live video on Wednesday, Isilomo expressed disgust at the claims of the fellow evicted housemates, adding that their claim was meant to smear the reputation of Tacha before Nigerians.

    She said: “Why do you need to talk about body odour? I stayed in that house for a week. I personally know that Tacha doesn’t have body odour.

    “I never smelt any mouth odour. I have never smelt anything like that.

    “In fact, Tacha is very clean and trust me there are a few babes in that house that you can say are clean babes, trust me, I’m not even going to go there so let’s leave that gist.

    “I think it was disgusting, I think it was such a low blow, obviously she doesn’t have anything to say and so she’s just trying to just maybe blow off Tacha’s game.

    “Their comment is coming from a place of ‘painment’, it’s coming from their chest because Tacha is actually a clean babe.”

  • BBNaija (S4): Jayke wins N1.5 m ‘Know Your Lyrics’ challenge

    Jayke Madu, one of the BBNaija(S4) “Pepper Dem” housemates, has won N1.5 million `Know Da Lyric’ challenge in the Big Brother House.

    Biggie had introduced a new task, ‘ Know Da Lyrics challenge’ which every housemates were expected to choose from the written lyrics of Pepsi brand Ambassadors, Wizkid, Tiwa Savage, Tekno, Davido, Burna Boy and Teni and perform.

    After spending one day rehearsing for the Pepsi Challenge ‘Know Da Lyrics,’ the housemates finally came together to give their best as they tried to win the task with Jackye taking home the coveted prize at the end of the day.

    Out of the 17 housemates, Jackye and Seyi made it to the final, where Jackye defeated Seyi to become winner of the challenge which also includes a VVIP ticket for a 4-day One Africa Music Fest in Dubai.

    The first song of the day was Wizkid’s ‘Fever’ which was performed by the housemates.

    At the end of the song, Biggie praised some of the housemates for their excellent performance.

    However, some of the housemates got disqualified from the task, for singing the lines that weren’t meant for them.

    The first housemates to get the red card were Mercy, Khafi, and Sir Dee.

    Then came the second song which was performed by the housemates, however, Thelma got disqualified for breaking the rules of the task. It didn’t take long before Frodd, Ike and Gedoni got axed from the game.

    Mercy shocked by her disqualification broke down in tears. The guys were however on hand to console her.

    Then came Ike who was on hand to cuddle his love interest in the house.

    Nelson, Diane, and Jeff tried their best but couldn’t make it to the finish line. It became a battle between Seyi and Jackye.

    At the end of the interesting challenge, Jackye came out tops as the winner of the ‘Know Da Lyrics’ task.

  • BBNaija 2019: Tacha rains insults on Frodd for wanting to share bathroom

    There was drama on Wednesday as BBNaija housemates, Tacha and Frodd got into a fight.

    It all started when Frodd and the other guys tried to go into the bathroom to shower but were stopped by Tacha, who didn’t want to share the bathroom with anyone.

    This didn’t go down well with the guys as they all called out Tacha for being selfish.

    Frodd took it further as he continued to blast Tacha for her insistence.

    Tacha, who didn’t take the response lightly, blasted Frodd, calling him stupid for trying to talk about violence.

    However, Sir Dee was able to calm Frodd down while Tacha returned to the bathroom.

    Tacha, who was still angry over the statement, came out of the shower and continued to insult Frodd.

    Housemates in Big Brother Naija ‘Pepper Dem’ on Monday took part in what may arguably go down as the most exciting and unexpected nomination show of the franchise.

    Following the previous day’s double evictions of Ella and KimOprah, the nomination Show resulted in Mike, Seyi, Frodd, Tuoyo & Tacha going up for possible eviction next week Sunday.  As is the norm, the Housemates individually made their way to the diary room to nominate two housemates each for possible eviction. At the end, Seyi & Frodd topped the nomination list with a total of six votes each, with Tuoyo coming next with five votes. Mike received four votes while Tacha had four votes.

    The shocker of the show, however, came after the revelation of the nominations, with Seyi refusing to save himself with his veto power. “Biggie” had hitherto called on Seyi, asking about using his veto power to save and replace himself with another housemate. In the most surprising twist, however, Seyi declined to use his power and refused to replace himself with any other housemate. With this decision, Seyi not only remains up for eviction alongside Mike, Frodd, Tuoyo and Tacha, but he is also automatically banned from any privileges associated with his veto power.

    As expected, Monday’s nomination show has generated tremendous buzz on social media with fans questioning Seyi’s decision, and many waiting for the next eviction show to discover the outcome.

  • BBNaija: Esther becomes first female ‘pepperdem’ Head of House

    Esther has become the first female `pepper dem’ Head of House (HoH) for the fourth season of the Big Brother Naija reality show.

    News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that prior to her win on Monday, the position had been occupied by two make housemates, Jeff and Nelson.

    Esther became victorious by winning the ‘‘Memory Challenge’ where housemates were required to memories the numbers of cards found in the house for 20 minutes.

    After the 20 minutes elapsed, the housemates moved to the Arena where Big Brother made a twist to the game.

    According to Biggie, the housemates were a bit too uptight so he decided to spice things up. He made then dance to music for five minutes.

    After dancing, Biggie asked the housemates to guess the location of the numbers in the housent and any housemate who guessed wrongly the location of the numbers would leave the Arena.

    The first casualties were Frodd, Tacha, and Mercy. Tuoyo got disqualified for the second time in two weeks for talking to Omashola during the task.

    Jeff and Mike both got disqualified after breaking the rules. Nelson, Sir Dee, Khafi and Thelma all got axed as they couldn’t keep up with identifying the numbers at the correct locations.

    Omashola, Ike, Jackye, Gedoni, Seyi all could not get their locations correctly with Esther reading all locations correctly, making her the head of house.

    NAN reports that the Head Of House position comes with 250 Bet9ja coins and the special room where the winner will stay for a week.

    On Sunday, Ebuka Obi-Uchendu announced the eviction of Ella and Kimoprah from the Big Brother House.

    Here are the details of how Nigerians voted have emerged:

    Mercy had the highest percentage of votes while Ella had the least.

    Ella with the least votes got evicted in Sunday night’s live eviction show.

  • UPDATED: Ella, KimOprah evicted from #BBNaija House

    Ella Nnabuchi and beauty queen, KimOprah have been evicted from the fourth season of the Big Brother Naija reality show.

    The housemates, who had spent two weeks on the show before getting evicted on Sunday, joins Avala and Isilomo who were evicted after barely a week.

    Ella, during her stay in the house, was hitting on Ike and she had fun times singing during tasks or challenges.

    Kimoprah on her part, had herself enjoying the company of Jeff but Omashola confessed to liking her.

    During her interview with the show host, Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, Ella said that the future for her lies in entertainment – music, dance, modeling and movies.

    Kimoprah however revealed that she would be furthering her studies before taking a step into broadcasting and owning the entertainment world.

    Twenty-one housemates made it to the Big Brother House and they are now down to seventeen

    The eviction continues for the next 11 weeks when the show comes to an end.

     

  • #BBNaija: Omashola, Seyi receive coins from evicted housemates

    Evicted housemates, Isilomo and Avala finally distributed 80 coins each from the show among the remaining housemates.

    News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Bet9ja coins were Biggie’s currency that could be exchanged for several favours as the show progresses.

    While Avala gave her remaining coins to Seyi, Isilomo helped Omashola out with hers. Both Omashola and Seyi were surprised and appreciative of the gesture.

    NAN recalls that Avala and Isilomo were evicted as the housemates with the least amount of coins despite playing an arena game in an attempt to stack more.

    Meanwhile at the house, the remaining 19 housemates lost their wager and had to give up their coins to save one another.

    After putting up a wonderful performance both at the robot Task and the Bet9ja Arena Games on Saturday, the housemates were required to contribute 2, 500 coins among themselves.

    After all the back and forth, Nelson, the Head of House, gathered everyone in the lounge to discuss their options.

    Each Housemate had to contribute whatever he or she had, since the Task concerns every single one of them.

    Jeff appeared exemplary by contributing a staggering 400 Bet9ja Coins while Tacha gave 100 and Omashola gave his last 20 coins.

    NAN reports that both housemates and fans are eager to find out Biggie’s plans with the coins as eviction holds on Sunday.

  • #BBNaija: Housemates impersonate popular Nigerian celebrities

    The Big Brother Naija ‘Pepper Dem’ housemates scored heavy points with fans of the show by impersonating popular Nigerian celebrities for the party on Saturday.

    News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the 19 housemates are each required to dress and act like celebrities for the night which drew massive admiration from fans of the show on social media.

    The most noteworthy were Omashola as DJ Spinall, Seyi as Kizz Daniel, Thelma as Toke Makinwa, Mercy as Dencia, Mike as Jidenna, Esther as CeeC, Frood as Phyno and Ike as Rema.

    Omashola got the most accolades from fans who said he “looked more like DJ Spinall and could pass as his twin”. To complete the look, the Delta-born housemate added the classic, signature cap the DJ is known for.

    @Donjazzy tweeted, “Omashola already looks like DjSpinall. #bbnaija”

    @Uaoboi said, “Omashola looks like DJ spinall more than DJ spinall looks himself #BBNaija.”

    Meanwhile, Dencia and Jidenna, on Twitter, gave their seals of approval to Mercy and Mike for portraying them on the show.

    Reacting to Mike’s costume and portraying of him, superstar singer Jidenna commented @Jidenna, “So…I hear Mike is impersonating me on #BBNaijia.

    “E enta so?? Show me a clip, abeg. I can’t access in obodo oyibo. Dalu, Hilarious. Nice one.”

    On her part, Dencia felt honoured to be chosen by Mercy. She said, “Awww. I am so humbled. Her pull up game too strong. I don’t have access to watch but we Stan.”

    NAN reports that despite the accolades gotten for impersonating celebrities, fans were disappointed by the behavior of housemates on the dance floor.

    They argued that they spent more time dancing to the mirror than actually dancing with each other to the song. Some fans suggested that ‘Biggie ‘ brought Alex Unusual back for just one party, at least.

    @_casey tweeted, “Swears……Alex life of the party, all this people I don’t understand #Bbnaija.”

    However, DJ BigN who led the turntable received praise for his song choices and setting the right vibes in the house for the housemate.
