  • The key factor in internal security

The key factor in internal security

    By Femi Salako

At various times, President Bola Tinubu has often declared the commitment of his administration to winning the war against insecurity in the country.

He stated this much during the Regimental Dinner Night in honour of the Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day in Abuja, in January. It is significant that the top priorities of his  budgeting outlook are defence and internal security, job creation, macro-economic stability, improved investment environment, human capital development, poverty reduction, and social security.

The Renewed Hope Agenda focuses on bolstering national security for peace and prosperity. Specifically, it aims to strengthen national security for peace and prosperity.

The thinking is that security is the bedrock of national development. Thus, the focus “is on enhancing the capabilities of our security forces, promoting peace and stability, and ensuring that every Nigerian feels safe and protected, no matter where they reside.” In strengthening internal security, the president settled on Hon Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, a personality whose tech background was expected to bring a fresh perspective to addressing the country's mounting security challenges.

The objective is to leverage technology, intelligence, and community engagement to  create a comprehensive security strategy that makes a real difference in the everyday lives of Nigerians.

Since assuming office, Tunji-Ojo has sought to enhance border security as a critical component of Nigeria’s overall security strategy. In specific terms, he has placed emphasis on secure communication networks an integrated system that uses sensors, drones and AI-powered analytics to monitor and manage border activity. The use of biometric technologies such as facial recognition, fingerprinting, and iris scanning to identify and track individuals crossing the border, secure communication networks for border security personnel to share information and coordinate efforts, and equipment of order patrol agents with modern technologies, such as night vision goggles, thermal imaging cameras, and advanced surveillance systems has been sharply focused. And, of course, collaboration with neighboring countries to share intelligence, coordinate border security efforts, and address common security challenges has been a toppriority. As would be clear from the foregoing, then, leadership is the most critical factor in internal security. The resources may be there, but it is leadership, specifically quality leadership, that brings everything together to form a unified, efficient whole.

Given the minister’s sterling background, it can be no wonder that he has recorded monumental strides since assuming office. In particular, Nigerians have been keen to point to the strategic importance of the remodeling of the Fire Service Academy, Abuja, the launch of the Safe School Initiative, establishment of the Command and Control Center and, of course, the launch of the Contactless Biometric Passport, which recently took off in Europe after its successful implementation in Canada. In any case, with the clearance of 204,332 passport backlogs and over 50,000 new passports in just three weeks, not to mention the 2.5 million NiN modification backlogs, the decongestion of the prisons/correction centres with 4,068 inmates (comprising persons sentenced to various terms of imprisonment with the option of fine and compensation in custodial status nationwide) released; improved emergency and fire response time by commissioning new fire engines and rapid intervention vehicles and the establishment of enhanced e-passport facilities at select Nigerian Embassies in Italy, Spain, Greece, Austria and Switzerland, Nigerians have seen the dynamics of positive leadership in the Ministry of Interior.

By making the passport application and collection processes easier and faster, launching Mines Marshal to smoke out illegal miners and all those who flout Nigeria’s nation's mining laws, deploying over 40 eGates across Abuja, Lagos, Kano, Enugu, and Port Harcourt international airports, and commissioning of thirty (30) operational vehicles dedicated to the surveillance and patrol of our border space and rehabilitating Correctional Centers, the Interior Minister has shown that matters of internal security are being accorded the prime attention that they deserve. Indeed, as Nigerians count down to the March 1 launching of the revised visa policy, which features the E-Visa and an end-to-end application process for Nigerian visas, the Federal Government is meticulously ensuring that every detail is addressed to deliver a seamless, secure, and safe solution. This initiative aims to unlock Nigeria's economic potential by fostering tourism and business growth. That is not quite strategic.

Coming to the specifics regarding the welfare of personnel of the paramilitary agencies, since assuming the chairmanship of the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board (CDCFIB), the minister has seen to the expedited promotion exercises, payment of allowance, upward review of salaries and the establishment of the Paramilitary Pensions Board, training and welfare packages for staff under the ministry. He approved the promotion of 32,361 personnel across agencies under the Ministry of Interior, setting a new record. At the NSCDC, in particular, 21, 385 personnel were promoted to new ranks in 2023 alone, and this is an ongoing exercise as we speak. Nigerians have also lauded the minister for inaugurating a special force, Mining Marshal, under the NSCDC to protect mining sites across Nigeria as the government seeks to crack down on saboteurs. Poised to make the corps more efficient, especially within the context of the complaints that Nigerian have lodged against the service over the years, the minister commissioned a fleet of operational vehicles to enhance patrol and surveillance around critical national assets. Regarding the ugly incidence of abduction of school children, he promoted and Supported the Safe Schools Initiative in a bid to continue its legacy contribution to the safety of school children, among others.

The NCoS has witnessed similar gestures as its sister agencies, including the romotion of 4,498 personnel from the service to new ranks in 2023, decongestion of correctional facilities, and the facilitation of speedy trials of inmates awaiting trials, through active and dynamic collaboration with the Ministry of Justice. To reiterate a fact, Nigerians have also praised the renovation of the Correctional facilities across the country. Remarkably, the Federal Fire Service (FFS) now has an emergency response time below 15 minutes, a timeline that it strives to adhere scrupulously to. In addition, it has15 new rapid response vehicles and six firefighting trucks to enhance the operational capabilities of the service, while the NIS, which, let us reiterate, cleared over 200k passport backlogs in just three weeks, has its passport environment portal redesigned to become a seamless and automated system where every citizen has an NIS office on their mobile phone.

Many Nigerians applauded the launch of the contactless biometrics passport application system for Nigerians in Canada and Europe., but the deployed Advance Passenger Information System (APIS)/Passenger Name Record (PNR) is another game changer on its own. The Tunji-Ojo leadership commenced the upgrade of the passport enrolment portal into a contactless technology, commissioned 30 new patrol vehicles deployed to secure Nigeria’s borders, and constructed a command and control centre housing a 1.4 petabytes capacity data centre in the NIS headquarters, Sauka, Abuja.

Then, there is the installation of e-Gates as border security measures across all international airports, activation of Document Verification Officers (DVOs) at LGAs, and the inauguration of the Bola Ahmed Tinubu Technology Innovation Complex (BATTIC) comprising the Command and Control Center, the NIS Data Center, the ECOWAS

Biometric Card Production Center, the Interior Data Center, Passport Personalization Center, the Visa Application Center and the Solar Farm.

It is no coincidence that the office of the minister has institutionalised timely response to emergency situations, routine inspection of all projects under the ministry, and invitation  of technical partners to pitch relevant ideas towards the enhancement of internal security, visa enrolment process and the localisation of the production of international  passports. Strategically, it explores various inter-ministerial and inter-agency collaborations to beef up internal security, going on to formalise working partnerships with ministries including Defence, Finance, Foreign Affairs, Mine and Steel Development, Justice, Trade, Industry And Investment, as well as institutions such as the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), and the Department of State Services (DSS), amongst others. That’s the power of vision, mission, and leadership.

Tunji-ojo and quiet revolution in the ministry of interior

    • By Hakeem Jamiu

DR. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo stands as a beacon of transformative leadership within Nigeria’s Ministry of Interiors. His tenure has been marked by a quiet revolution, characterized by innovative initiatives and a steadfast commitment to enhancing the lives of citizens through effective governance. Under his guidance, the ministry has not only modernized its operations but has also set a new standard for accountability, transparency, and social justice.

Dr. Tunji-Ojo has implemented a series of groundbreaking programs that have addressed pressing issues in immigration, correctional services, and fire safety. His initiatives reflect a profound understanding of the complexities of governance and a dedication to creating a safer, more efficient Nigeria. Some of these innovative and revolutionary initiatives and programs are discussed here under:

“Safe Haven” has emerged as a key program aimed at enhancing national security and community safety. By fostering partnerships with local law enforcement and community leaders, Dr. Tunji-Ojo has ensured that citizens feel secure in their environments, laying the groundwork for a more harmonious society.

The “Smart Border” initiative exemplifies his commitment to modernizing Nigeria’s border management. By incorporating advanced technologies, this program has streamlined border operations, making them more efficient and secure. This initiative not only enhances national security but also facilitates legitimate trade and travel, fostering economic growth.

In response to the increasing need for effective disaster management, Dr. Tunji-Ojo established the “Disaster Response Unit.” This unit is dedicated to coordinating emergency responses and ensuring that Nigeria is prepared for any eventuality, demonstrating his proactive approach to governance and commitment to protecting lives and property.

The introduction of the “E-Visa” system has revolutionized how Nigeria manages immigration. By simplifying the visa application process, this initiative has made it easier for foreign nationals to visit Nigeria, promoting tourism and international collaboration.

Dr. Tunji-Ojo also championed the “Migration Information Data Analysis System” (MIDAS), which enhances the management of migration data. This system provides critical insights that inform policy decisions, ensuring that Nigeria can effectively address migration challenges.

Recognizing the need for reform, he established the “Immigration Service Reform Committee”, which focuses on modernizing the operations of the Nigerian Immigration Service. This initiative aims to enhance efficiency, reduce corruption, and improve service delivery, ensuring that citizens receive the support they deserve.

In the realm of correctional services, Dr. Tunji-Ojo has made significant strides with the “Rehabilitation and Reintegration Initiative”. This program emphasizes the importance of rehabilitating inmates and preparing them for reintegration into society, fostering a more humane and effective correctional system.

The “Digital Case Management System” is another key achievement that streamlines the handling of cases within the justice system. By digitizing records and processes, this system enhances transparency and reduces delays, ensuring that justice is served promptly and fairly.

Furthermore, the modernization of custodial centres, particularly the “Kuje Medium Custodial Centre”, reflects his unwavering commitment to improving the conditions of incarceration. By upgrading facilities and implementing best practices, Dr. Tunji-Ojo is working to create a correctional environment that encourages rehabilitation rather than punishment.

Beyond his official duties, Dr. Tunji-Ojo is renowned for his philanthropy and dedication to social justice. His initiatives extend into communities, where he actively supports educational programs, healthcare initiatives, and empowerment projects. He understands that true leadership goes beyond policy; it involves uplifting the lives of those who are most vulnerable.

His commitment to accountability and transparency is evident in every initiative he undertakes. Dr. Tunji-Ojo believes that good governance is rooted in the principles of integrity and openness, and he has made it his mission to instil these values within the Ministry of Interiors and beyond.

It is an incontrovertible fact that Hon. Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo’s tenure in the Ministry of Interiors serves as an inspiring model of effective leadership and innovation. His achievements in immigration, correctional services, and disaster management are a testament to what can be accomplished when vision is coupled with action. As he continues to champion the cause of accountability, transparency, and social justice, he not only transforms institutions but also uplifts the very fabric of Nigerian society.

I must not end this piece without singling out our President, His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for special commendation for his remarkable foresight in appointing Hon. Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo as the Minister of Interiors. His support in providing him with the enabling environment to excel is equally commendable and reflects the President’s dedication to fostering effective governance.

Thank you, Mr. President, for your vision and leadership in empowering capable individuals like Dr. Tunji-Ojo to drive meaningful change in our nation.

  • 2027: Ogun West on my mind

2027: Ogun West on my mind

    • By Kayode Oladele

In all human affairs, there is always a time for realistic stock-taking whether as individual, collective groups, or corporate governance. Whichever way, self-evaluation is a good way to track progress, celebrate achievements, and adjust strategies. It also helps to identify strengths and weaknesses to evolve a means of overcoming them.

Looking back at history, though we may have reasons to disagree on politics or style of governance, all successive administrations that had governed Ogun State have made significant impacts in turning the state into a land of opportunities. The state is lucky to have been ruled by great minds. And great minds, they say, think alike. Beginning from the first civilian governor, Bisi Onabanjo, to Aremo Olusegun Osoba, down to Otunba Gbenga Daniel (OGD), his successor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, and the incumbent Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, there has been an abiding fate in the collective vision to make the state a trailblazer in education, industry, economy, administration and good governance. The same spirit has sustained the state’s peculiar advantage as the home of foremost leaders, great icons and pioneers, distinguished scholars, boardroom gurus and top-notch professionals Nigeria has had to parade. To date, Ogun State ranks high in the human development index, the most vital resource for greatness.

It is not by accident that Ogun State has played the most significant role in moulding the stature and status of the Nigerian state since independence. From politics to administration, business to music, activism to education, Ogun State has an array of successful individuals who became national figures.

Who will forget Chief Obafemi Awolowo whose contributions to political and human capital development loom large in Nigeria’s political firmament? What about the late Moshood Kashimawo Abiola (MKO), who bestrode the nation’s business and political landscape like a colossus, or Ernest Shonekan, the renowned head of interim government? In activism, the kutis-Afro music maestro, Fela Anikulapo, his brother Beko, and Dr Tai Solarin will forever be remembered for their tireless social crusade. Together, they formed the pantheon of heroes of our current democracy. The living legends among them like Olusegun Obasanjo, Prof. Wole Soyinka, Mike Adenuga, the Sofelas, etcetera, are like the knight in shining armour.

Since it was carved out of the old western region on February on February 3, 1976, all successive administrations have played one unique role or the other in turning Ogun State into a land of opportunities. Thus, coming as the first civilian governor during the Second Republic (1979-1983), Bisi Onabanjo already had his job made easy with a clear roadmap to work with. And he gave his best to the state leveraging the oceanic plentitude of human resources available to implement his policies. His most enduring legacy is the establishment of Ogun State University (now, Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye). With this vision, the university pioneered tertiary education development, turning the state into the nation’s education capital, having the highest number of universities and higher institutions of learning in the country. The university has produced several icons, administrators, business moguls, legal luminaries, educationists, literary giants, prominent entertainers as well as social and civil actors. It has also continued to attract, develop and nurture people from diverse backgrounds who are now playing pivotal roles in the phenomenal growth the state has recorded.

Aremo Olusegun Osoba, who came into the saddle after nine years of the military interregnum, served twice as governor between 1992 and 1993 in the first instance and 1999 to 2003 at the advent of the present civilian dispensation. In both instances, he consolidated the achievements of his predecessors across all sectors, especially his rural electrification and rural roads  scheme which he vigorously pursued during his four-year second tenure. He resolved the age long portable water problems across the State particularly  in Ijebu-Ode and its environs  and brought good governance to the doorsteps of many rural dwellers in the State in accordance with the objectives of the millennium development goals (MDG). Civil servants were also accorded priority through the prompt payment of their salaries and allowances including regular promotions.

According to Governor Dapo Abiodun in one of his numerous encomiums on Chief Osoba, “throughout  his leadership (in Ogun State) , Chief Olusegun Osoba navigated challenges with foresight and determination, laying the foundation for the socio-economic growth we enjoy today.”

The administration of OGD focused on industrialization and the establishment of technological educational institutions. He  started the construction of Ogun state agro cargo airport in Ilishan-Remo, an international air cargo port dedicated to offering direct export of agricultural products in Ogun state and Southwest Nigeria to the international community. He also established three free trade zones in each of the senatorial districts in Ogun State, namely, the Ogun Guangdong Free Trade Zone Limited, Igbesa, Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area, Olokola  Free Trade Zone (OKFTZ); Olokola Deep Seaport and Kajola Free Trade Zone in Ifo respectively in addition to the development  of  Abeokuta city center.  The slogan of his administration from  2003 to 2011 was “Re-awakening the sleeping giant”.

Ibikunle Amosun also left a remarkable legacy in the development of the state with his statement of purpose, “Mission to rebuild Ogun State (MITROS). He left an indelible imprint in the sand of time with his road infrastructures and urban renewal programs which changed the face of Abeokuta, the State capital among others. In 2013  Businessday Newspaper in Lagos gave him the “Good Governor Award “ as the governor of the fastest growing state economy in Nigeria amongst several other laurels.

Under the incumbent Governor Abiodun, the state has recorded phenomenal growth both in domestic and direct foreign investments, emerging as the leading most economically viable state in Nigeria. The pursuit of his transformation agenda as encapsulated in the ISEYA- “Building Our Future together” mantra can be summed up under the banners of his aggressive infrastructure development projects, creation of an enabling environment for investment, enhanced Ease-of-Doing-Business Index among others.

His landmark achievements include massive economic growth. development of the Gateway International Agro-cargo Airport, Ilishan-Remo, Inland Dry Port, reconstruction and construction of about 600km road network across the three senatorial districts, multi-modal transport system etc.

Governor Abiodun in one of his public statements declared that Ogun State is “the fastest growing investment and commercial destination not only in Nigeria, but in the entire West African sub-region, attracting one of the highest Foreign Direct Investments (FDI) and local investments.”

Ogun State deserves a candidate who can take it up from the incumbent Governor and continue the good work. Consolidating these great strides cannot happen by accident. There must be a smooth transition that can guarantee the emergence of a competent, focused, committed and visionary candidate who can continue the good work of the present administration.

Part of the reasons for the lack of continuity in development efforts in Ogun State is the absence of smooth or sustainable  transition from one administration to the other.  This has made the trajectory of growth haphazard, perfunctory and contradictory. Unlike Lagos State which has developed a comprehensive development master plan and a sustainable succession pattern, in Ogun State, every cycle of election has always come with acrimony and internal power squabbles. We must break loose from this trend to achieve some reasonable level of stability in the running of the affairs of the state. Without stability, the development progress of the state will be like a ball-room dance; one step forward and two steps backward.

As 2027 approaches,   we cannot afford to follow the same path if we must maintain the state’s leading role as the most economically viable in Nigeria and an investment destination of choice. It’s a task before the stakeholders particularly, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.

The only way to avoid a repeat of the immediate past experience is for the principal stakeholders to be open, transparent and fair in their handling of this matter. In doing so, consensus-building is very critical. Not only that a transparent and open consensus-building process will guarantee the emergence of a credible candidate but also lessens the tendency for disagreement that often results from acrimonious or bitter contests. Acrimonious political contests serve no one’s interest; it destroys the unity and internal coercion of the party and ultimately its defeat. We cannot afford to tread that path. Happily, the APC is a very strong  political party that can stand any test of time time even though, we owe a duty to build and nurture it for the future prosperity of our state and our people.

In doing so, we must address the concerns of the people of Ogun West with fairness and open-mindedness, focusing on the ultimate goal of achieving a seamless power transition to the next successor in the coming dispensation. So far, Ogun West has articulated genuine reasons for seeking the governorship slot and consistently engaged the relevant stakeholders in constructive dialogue. For mutual agreement, we have to approach the issues with the spirit of give-and-take.

As an open contest, there is already an array of contenders from Ogun Central seeking the ticket of the APC. No less than six prospective aspirants of Egba extraction have signified their intention to take a shot at the governorship seat. It makes the power game more interesting and more inclusive.

Much more exciting is the fact that unlike in the past when prospective candidates from Ogun West Senatorial District are hardly favored  statewide, there is currently a strong wave of bipartisan support, enthusiasm and popular  movement across the length and breadth of Ogun State for the Ogun West Senator, Aremo Solomon Olamilekan  Adeola  (Yayi ) whose beloved mother of blessed memory fortuitously hailed from Kemta Odutolu in Abeokuta, Ogun Central Senatorial District.  He currently enjoys massive support from maternal kinsmen in Abeokuta in addition to being regarded as a homeboy by his kit and kin in Ogun West.

This presents a unique opportunity for the good people of both senatorial districts  to leverage their influence and goodwill to advance their collective agenda and kill two birds with one stone. Fortunately, the popular support and clamor for Senator Olamilekan Adeola (Yayi) to run for Ogun State’s Chief Servant in 2027 is not just borne out of the call for affirmative action for Ogun West that has been deprived of the opportunity since the creation of the State. It is indeed, a product of Yayi’s “political utilitarianism” which in a nutshell believes that government actions and policies  should maximize happiness for the people and he has left no one in doubt about his intentions to achieve happiness for the people of Ogun State which explains the reason why he is widely regarded across the State.

That collective resolution though, is not to undermine the aspiration of other contenders who may want to exercise their fundamental rights to contest under a level playing field as guaranteed by the Constitution.

Regardless of who we are and where we come  from, we need each other to survive and actualize our collective dreams and aspirations as a people. The future of Ogun State is in our hands. We are all equal stakeholders. However, every section must be given its fair deal to have a true sense of belonging. In our search for a credible candidate who can lead the state to the next level of development after the expiration of the tenure of Governor Abiodun, the stakeholders in Ogun State must ensure fairness, justice and equity.  The people of Ogun West Senatorial District must be given an exclusive opportunity and be supported to produce the next governor of our dear state.

El-Rufai’s hypocrisy, betrayal: A shameless attack on Tinubu, APC

    By Adewale Oloruntoba

Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has once again demonstrated his trademark opportunism, launching an unwarranted attack on the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC)—the very party that elevated him to enviable national prominence, after he was humiliated by the then ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). In his characteristic manner, El-Rufai has chosen to bite the hand that fed him, turning against the party that gave him an unprecedented eight-year platform to govern Kaduna and play a pivotal role in national mainstream politics.

This latest outburst is not only hypocritical but also reeks of desperation, self-preservation, and entitlement. If anyone embodies the culture of political backstabbing in Nigeria, it is El-Rufai, who has a well-documented history of betraying those who have helped him climb the political ladder. His recent criticism of the APC and its leadership, after benefiting immensely from the party’s goodwill, exposes his lack of principles and insatiable hunger for power.

It is laughable that El-Rufai now claims the APC is failing, that its leadership recruitment process is flawed, and that the party no longer represents the ideals it was created to uphold. If the party is indeed in disarray, then El-Rufai himself must take a significant portion of the blame, as he was a key architect of the party’s policies and governance structure.

Read Also: Auto: Chinese envoy seeks greater ties with Nigeria

Has he suddenly forgotten that it was the APC that made him a two-term governor of Kaduna State? Has he also forgotten that it was President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, which was an APC-led government, that made him a central figure in national policymaking?

El-Rufai would do well to remember that before the APC, he had been politically irrelevant after serving as Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) under President Olusegun Obasanjo. He spent years wandering in the political wilderness and seeking relevance. It was APC’s emergence in 2013 that rescued his political career, offering him a fresh start. Yet today, rather than show gratitude, he is busy trying to discredit the very structure that sustained him. The political goodwill of the APC robbed off his family, as one of the children rode to the Federal House of Representatives, chairing a juicy housing committee on Banking regulations.

El-Rufai’s political career is a testament to the generosity of the APC and its leaders. Without APC, El-Rufai would never have won the governorship election in Kaduna. The party’s strong structure and Buhari’s influence delivered victory to him. He should be thanking APC for his eight-year reign rather than attempting to discredit it.

As a governor, he was given immense influence over national policy matters. He served as the chairman of several high-profile APC committees, including those on restructuring and governance. He was one of the most vocal defenders of the APC-led federal government during Buhari’s tenure.

Likewise, being an APC governor afforded him access to federal resources, security, and the political shield he needed to operate freely. He was shielded from opposition attacks from other quarters

El-Rufai’s betrayal of APC is hardly surprising. He has a long history of turning against his benefactors when it suits his personal self-serving agenda.

The betrayal of former President Olusegun Obasanjo readily comes to mind. After serving as FCT Minister, he turned against Obasanjo, publicly criticizing the same government that had made him relevant in the first place.

Enter former Vice President Atiku Abubakar. Once an ally of Atiku, he later became one of his fiercest critics, abandoning their political relationship when it was no longer convenient.  Strangely, he is reportedly romancing the same Atiku for political gain after he has lost relevance in national politics.

What of immediate past  President Muhammadu Buhari? After benefiting immensely from Buhari’s goodwill and support, he distanced himself when it became politically expedient.

Now, he has displayed the same  betrayal of APC and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. Despite benefiting from the APC platform for years, he is now painting a picture of a failed party and an incompetent leadership.

The pattern is clear. El-Rufai has a habit of using people and platforms to advance his political ambitions before discarding them when they no longer serve his interests.

El-Rufai’s claim that APC’s leadership recruitment process is dominated by “illiterates and cunning people” is not only insulting but also hypocritical. If the party’s leadership selection process is flawed, then he must take responsibility, as he was one of the key figures shaping that process.

He conveniently ignores the fact that he himself was a product of that very system he now condemns. Did he complain when APC’s system favored him in Kaduna? Was the party’s delegate system flawed when he emerged as the governorship candidate in 2015? His sudden realization of APC’s so-called failures now that he is out of government is nothing more than a desperate attempt to remain politically relevant.

El-Rufai’s attack on President Tinubu and the APC is nothing short of a desperate act by a man who sees his influence diminishing. His criticism is not born out of genuine concern for democracy or good governance, but rather out of frustration that he is no longer at the center of political power.

If he truly believes APC has lost its way, he should take responsibility for his own role in shaping the party over the past decade. He should acknowledge that he is a product of the very system he now condemns.

Rather than launching baseless attacks, El-Rufai should reflect on his own failures as a leader. His eight years as Kaduna governor were marked by insecurity, division, and controversy. He failed to unite Kaduna, and his governance style alienated many.

If El-Rufai has any integrity left, he should focus on contributing positively to national development instead of trying to sabotage the party that gave him everything. Nigeria has moved beyond his brand of politics—one based on self-interest, betrayal, and deception. The APC and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will move forward with or without him.

  • Fed Govt’s e-Border project: An outsider’s view

    Fed Govt’s e-Border project: An outsider’s view

    By Israel Fagbemigun

Almost a year into the effective take-off of the Federal Government’s E-Border project as being effectively implemented by the Nigeria Immigration Service(NIS), some developments that have followed need to be assessed.

First as a way to x-ray the performance of the NIS as an agency of government under their supervision of Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the Minister of Interior within the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s renewed hope agenda, and secondly as a way of assessing the connection between policy elucidation, implementation and congruence between projections and outcomes.

There is no doubting the fact that the issue of irregular migration through unauthorized borders is a global challenge. The most recent US election had issues surrounding such movements well debated and the policy direction of the newly Inaugurated Trump presidency attests to it.

The peculiarities of Nigeria, its being heemed in between different Sahel states and the fact that there are  numerous cross-border communities interacting on commercial and family and cultural basis amongst others, place more pressure on her in this direction.

The E-Border solution was therefore conceived with the variables highlighted above in mind. One of the aims of the project was to deliver a total of 40 E-verification gates across multiple airports in Nigeria by the end of the first quarter. These installations were to include 10 gates in Abuja, 21 in Lagos, five in Kano, and four each in Enugu and Port-Harcourt. All have been built, but only Abuja and Lagos are fully functional at the moment.

To actualise the set goals, and obviously mindful of these challenges, the Comptroller General of the Immigration Service  on assuming office conducted border assessment tours across our various border posts, commands, and formations in the country, to assess the status of our borders and reinforce inter-agency collaboration. It is safe to opine that the tours must have enabled her to identify areas of vulnerability and take proactive measures to strengthen our borders.

Read Also: EU votes 150b euro infrastructure devt support for Nigeria, others

Obvious from the agency’s subsequent actions is the fact thay the tours also strengthened its border community informants network, providing it with timely and actionable intelligence on potential security threats.

Little wonder gains have been recorded in droves. Late last year, precisely on the 10th of December,  84 illegal migrants were apprehended in Oyo state. These individuals, mostly under the age of Twenty (20), were upon interrogation confirmed to be involved in different cyber and other related crimes. They were also confirmed to be from such African neighbours as Congo Brazzaville, Central African Republic (CAR), and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Specificaly connected with the  E-gates system is the arrest of 14 persons of international security interest! What this means is that from information gleaned from the immigrants which were then ran through the E-gates database, they were confirmed to be persons who pose security threats of international dimension! Such persons would have seamlessly dissolved into Nigeria if the initiative had not been commenced.

But that was not all. One Mrs. Uadiale Christiana Jacob, aka Christy Evan Osagie, a wanted convicted leader of an international human trafficking network, was also arrested by operatives of the NIS at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos on the 24th December 2024. Again, it was through the use of the e-gate process.

Just a week ago, 90 illegal immigrants were apprehended by the NIS is Rivers State. Their profiling revealed that 85 of them are Cameroonian, 5 Chadians, aided by 4 Nigeriens. Of the 94, 74 are males and 20 females. This again point to a more proactive, more diligent and more focussed Immigration Service.

Yet these achievements, remarkable as they are, do not conclusively on their own prove that the NIS has arrived the desired destination in the bid to make our nation safer through renewed vigilance on her borders. What it shows is with more efforts, better outcomes are possible. It also shows that much more has to be done, that for the NIS, there is still much room for improvement.

Such possible improvements may however not come until other phases of the e-border solutions are commenced. For the truth is that the e-border solutions were scheduled to be installed and deployed in three phases, and only the first phase has just been operationalised.

That first phase has however brought some positive developments as earlier shown.  For instance, the NIS has intercepted and repatriated one hundred and Seventy-six [176] migrants along Nigeria’s border with Benin Republic in the past 6 months. This is true of all other border areas where the NIS has received positive feedback from the community and other sister security agencies.

Yet the NIS was operating under international parameters. It had to be careful to avoid the over-generalization of all irregular migrants as criminals, terrorists, and bandits, a reality that the United Nation’s Conventions and other regional protocols to which Nigeria is a signatory frowns at.

It has to on one hand be able to allow regular migration, avoid criminalizing undocumented migrants, and refrain from stigmatising Nigeria’s neighbours without proper evidence and facts, on the other.

Again, the NIS has to navigate around the fact that citizens of both Benin Republic and Niger Republic being members of the ECOWAS region do not require visas to enter Nigeria and that Chad, yet another country from which immigrants flock in, enjoys visa free entry to Nigeria for visits not more than 90 days!

In a way therefore, the close cultural and historical relationship at the border communities have in no small way affected the performance of the e-border effort.

But the NIS seems to have apprehended this reality. Within the last one year, it introduced the issuance of ECOWAS National Biometric Card (ENBIC) that will ensure proper documentation of ECOWAS migrants as they transit between their countries of origin and Nigeria. This document doubles as a residence permit for citizens of ECOWAS apart from being a travel document.

The service has also continued with the e-registration of migrants, an initiative commenced in 2019 and have registered over 250,000 foreigners between then and late 2024. The NIS through this effort has acquired and is keeping biometric records of all categories of migrants in Nigeria.

At all times, the NIS has never for once kept its attention from closely monitoring the movement of migrants into Nigeria as part of its mandate. Even when Nigeria’s borders were closed in 2020 against the inflow of goods, the Federal Government did not order the closure of borders against humans and the NIS did not reduce its vigilance in any way.

No doubt, the E-border initiative as being implemented by the NIS has helped greatly along the line, it is hoped that further phases will do more to keep Nigeria and her borders safe and protected from dangerous and criminal elements while guaranteeing the movement of others under the laws of the land.

Gov Abiodun: Creative thinking and prudent management of resources

    By Femi Ogbonnikan

This is another assessment season for governments, corporate bodies, and individuals. For the administration of the Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, the 2024 fiscal year was a year of great accomplishments in very many respects. From road infrastructure development projects to healthcare delivery service, human capital development, domestic and foreign investment inflow, security, Easy-of-Doing-business index, and economic growth, etcetera, achievements within the year have been quite tremendous.

All these did not happen by accident. It’s the outcome of diligent planning, commitment, policy consistency, and prudent management of resources. To begin with infrastructure development, there is a long list of landmark projects the administration has commissioned that have added to the fortune of the state’s economy and industry. As of today, over 600 kilometres of roads have been constructed across the state to ease the movement of goods and persons. Apart from internal connectivity, priority has also been given to the highways that connect Ogun with neighbouring states, particularly Lagos.

The most recent of these is the Denro-Ishasi-Akute Road commissioned by Governor Abiodun at the tail end of the year. Until the intervention of the present government, the road had suffered prolonged neglect under successive administrations.

Similarly, construction work on the Akute-Oke Aro road within Ifo Local Government Area is also progressing simultaneously. While commissioning the Ojodu Abiodun-Denro-Ishasi-Akute Road, the governor promised to complete the project within the shortest possible time, signaling a new dawn for these suburb communities.  Among others, Denro-Ishashi is one of the fastest growing communities in Ogun State. Its rapidly expanding population is as a result of affordable housing. Bordering Nigeria’s largest commercial city, Lagos, it has continued to witness an increase in the influx of people who cannot afford the rising trend of accommodation rent. With the current economic challenges facing the nation, rent in Lagos has gone beyond the reach of average income households. So, the community offers itself as an alternative settlement option.

But the deplorable condition of the road has for so long remained a nightmare for the residents. The agony of the people in the affected areas had been a popular reference point for the media before Governor Abiodun’s intervention. However, through the intervention of the Abiodun administration, the road has been restored to a better shape to ease the suffering of people in the area.

Thus, people can now travel between Lagos and Ogun State in less than an hour for a journey that would hitherto take two or three hours or even more before the advent of the present administration. More and more people are now coming to Ogun State to live, to work and to hold conferences because of easy accessibility.

While construction work on the 20-kilometre Agbara-Lusada-Atan in Ado Odo/Ota Local Government Area is almost being completed, Prince Abiodun has equally put Ajuwon and Akute-Ajuwon roads on the priority list, saying “I am a promise-keeping governor.”

For so long, the Agbara-Lusada-Atan road has been in a deplorable condition. Yet, the road is of great economic importance to the State and the nation as a whole.” Prince Abiodun maintained that his administration had kept faith with his promise to ensure that road construction was evenly spread across the 20 local governments in the state.

The ever-busy Lagos-Ota-Sango-Abeokuta which has remained a nightmare to the commuters and motorists along the corridor also received the attention of the Ogun State government under Prince Dapo Abiodun. Ordinarily, the road is a direct responsibility of the Federal Government but bureaucratic bottleneck had stalled the joint efforts of the Ogun State government and its counterpart in Lagos State to take over the financing of it in the interest of the commuting public. However, following persistent agitation that culminated in the eventual handing over of the road to the two states, the contract for the reconstruction work was awarded to Craneburg Construction Company in May 2024. This was borne out of the concern to relieve the people of the pain they go through on a daily basis.

In addition to this, the governor has also facilitated other federal projects including Laderin Train Station road phase one, Abeokuta. The project is in two phases beginning from Laderin to the train station with the channelization of storm water to the drainages.

Beyond that, the Ogun State ministry of Works and Infrastructure is also collaborating with the Federal Government to rehabilitate additional 21 roads across the state, beginning with Ado Odo/Ota, Yewa North and Yewa South, as well as Abeokuta North and Abeokuta South. One of such key projects is the ongoing reconstruction of Sango-Atan-Owode-Idi-Iroko Road. The project has been on paper for so many years.

The real game changer is the Gateway Agro-Cargo International Airport, Ilishan-Remo billed to commence flight operations anytime from now. Though a capital-intensive project, the Airport was built in a record-breaking short period of two years, thus, making it the fastest to be constructed ever in the history of this country. It recorded the first historic flight landing sometime last year. As already projected, the Airport will begin scheduled and non-scheduled flights any time from now, as the approval process to get the airport running has reached an advanced stage.

Power is the engine room of economic and industrial growth. To give further boost to industrial transformation initiative of the administration, Governor Abiodun has expressed interest in acquiring the Hydro Power Plant situated at the Ogun-Osun River Basin Development Authority to facilitate the availability of energy for investors in the state. The importance of the long-abandoned Hydro Power Plant to the state’s economy cannot be over-emphasized. When successfully resuscitated, it will attract sufficient energy for business interests in the state. It will also highlight the state’s potential as a hub for industrial activities by ensuring affordable energy costs through this acquisition.

For the health concern, the recent transfer of the 250-bed capacity hospital, Abeokuta is a further testament to the administration’s commitment to accessible healthcare service delivery to the good people of Ogun State.

The project was 65 percent completion level when former governor Ibikunle Amosun abandoned it midway. Realising the state’s financial incapacitation due to the challenge of the current economy, the present government decided to enter into concessionary arrangements with global health management institutions to compete and run the hospital on behalf of the state government.

While performing the handover ceremony to Viewpoint Health Management Services Limited and Pan African Capital Holdings at his office in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, Abiodun assured that the 250-bed Specialist Hospital would start operations in March 2025 in the first instance and subsequently commence full operations in June of the same year.

“This hospital will meet the precise needs of our population. It is scheduled for partial opening in March 2025 and full operations in June 2025.

“From what we have seen and done, if that hospital is properly run, medical tourism will be attracted to that hospital,” he enthused.

Governor Abiodun further emphasized that the hospital would be equipped with advanced facilities and cutting-edge technology for effective healthcare delivery, as well as serve as a referral centre for medical research, training, and innovation.

The Abiodun administration’s commitment to affordable housing aligns with its urban regeneration policy as well as the new housing policy of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. So far, the administration has built over 4,000 houses across the state, while also working towards the delivery of 10,000 housing units before the end of the second tenure of Governor Abiodun.

The governor gave the assurance when he received the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Federal Housing Authority (FHA), Mr. Oyetunde Oladimeji Ojo, who paid him a courtesy call in his office at Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

“To date, we have built about 4,000 affordable houses within four years, and we are still building. By the time I’m done, we will probably build about 10,000 houses,” he said.

Another project called “Civil Servants Village,” sitting on a 50-hectare of land is also ongoing to give opportunity for members of the state workforce to buy land and build their houses.

The governor further assured that his administration would establish a system where Nigerians in the Diaspora would acquire property in the state online and track their development wherever they are.

For four consecutive sessions under the administration of Abiodun, the state has routinely maintained its competitive edge over the rest parts of the country. The administration has been able to initiate and sustain the trajectory of economic growth through aggressive infrastructure development, improved Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) capacity, industrial investments, human capital development, youth empowerment, improvement in agricultural value chains, land reform policy, Ease-of-Doing-Business, healthcare delivery service, affordable housing and implementation of an integrated transportation master plan, among others.

Over the last five years, there has been continuous improvement in the Ease-of-Doing-Business and land reforms initiative which provide attraction for investors. The same reason also accounted for the creation of four economic zones in the State in addition to the Agbara Industrial Zone, which includes Ota and Kajola axes. At present, Agbara Industrial Zone is arguably the largest industrial zone in Nigeria and probably one of the largest in the continent. It is the zone that makes Ogun State the industrial capital of Nigeria.

As of today, Ogun is among the few states that can survive independently of the Federal Government. Due to the combined effects of creative thinking and prudent management of resources, Ogun State has retained itself as one of Nigeria’s resilient and economically viable states amid the global challenges.

The latest report by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) confirms the resilience of the state’s economy based on its sustained growth and enhanced revenue-generating capacity. According to the release, Ogun State increased its IGR in 2023 from N120.58 billion to N146.87 billion made up of N71.67 billion in tax revenues and N75.19 billion. Efforts are also being made to shore up the IGR for better service delivery to the people.

To ensure food self-sufficiency, the Abiodun administration has also initiated rice production to make agriculture another major income earner for the state government with no less than N30 billion as an addition to the Internally Generated Revenue.

As part of his renewed commitment to boost food production in the state, Governor Abiodun recently flagged off the harvest of a 200-hectare rice plantation at Magboro Rice Farm in Obafemi Owode-Local Government Area of the state. The motive for the initiative is to revolutionise the traditional mode of farming to it more productive system.

Traditionally, Ogun State has a long history of rice production, especially the local brand popularly known as Ofada rice. However, large-scale production has been severely limited by the use of indigenous farming methods by small-holder farmers. This is despite the various policies by successive governments to support these local farmers to promote food security and also preserve the cultural  heritage.

With the renewed support of the Abiodun administration, culminating in the establishment of the 200-hectare plantation, the state is now prospecting for more income from rice production.

To that extent, Ogun State has joined the league of large-scale rice-producing states in the country. The farm is the brainchild of the Ogun State Economic Transformation Project supported by the World Bank.  The initiative aligns with the policy of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to boost agricultural productivity to provide affordable food to the growing populace.

Though there are still challenges to surmount, the outlook of the economy in the New Year looks more promising. There is a silver lining in the sky.

    Chukwueke: Spirituality and humanitarian gestures

    • Reasons for embarking on 2024 Christmas palliatives to women, indigents across Imo
    • By Sir Amby Uneze

Christmas is a time of joy and celebration, marked by various traditions and acts of kindness across the globe. It is also a season of showing empathy on the people especially women and the indigent ones in the society. Due to the moral undertones attached to it, a prominent and compassionate member of the society in Imo State, Chief Jerry Chukwueke (popularly known as Ohamadike, The Geat Mobilizer) took the State by storm and distributed Christmas Palliatives to the people.

While others who engage in  palliative distributions would attached political gains to their actions, it is important to draw attention the motives of Chukwueke which were purely based on spirituality and humanitarian gestures. In this regard, his particular intention was to enhance the wellbeing  of the vulnerable communities.

Therefore, the role of spirituality during Christmas is fundamentally a Christian celebration commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ, which embodies values such as love, generosity, and compassion. These values foster a sense of community and encourage acts of kindness toward the less fortunate. Spirituality during this period acts as a guiding force, enabling individuals and organisations to focus on sharing resources and uplifting those in need.

Jerry Chukwueke’s initiatives resonate with the essence of Christmas by emphasising love and care for the less privileged, showcasing how spirituality can translate into impactful actions that benefit the wider community. This initiative indicates that spiritual values strongly influence communal life and humanitarian gestures, especially during festive seasons.

The distribution of palliatives directly addresses the needs of women and the indigent population in Imo State, who often face economic challenges exacerbated during the festive season. Therefore, initiatives like the ones undertaken by Chukwueke are critical for empowering women and alleviating the plights of the indigent people.

The practical impact of Chukwueke’s Christmas palliatives are profound. By focusing on women and indigents, and bringing together over 5000 of them that benefitted from the gesture expresses the desire to give hope to the less privileged in the society. The palliatives included food supplies (rice), financial aid, and health services, which are essential for improving quality of life. No doubt, palliatives serve as a crucial buffer for those at risk of falling deeper into poverty.

Empowering women through support can lead to improved family welfare and community resilience. Studies have shown that when women have access to resources, they are more likely to invest in their children’s education and healthcare, driving positive changes throughout their communities. In that case, Chukwueke’s initiatives not only addresses immediate needs but also contributes to the broader goal of fostering sustainable development in Imo State.

The ceremony which spanned for about three weeks on daily basis took him and his entourage to many communities in the State, including the Catholic dioceses of Ahiara, Orlu and the grand finale took place at Owerri Archdiocese premise. The finest moment was that it was a non-denominational activity that brought all people of diverse religious groups together.

The most interesting and emulating aspect of the events are the smooth and orderly strong floor management applied that made the whole episodes peaceful and organized, having security of the lives of the beneficiaries at heart.

In his short messages at every point, Chief Jerry Chukwueke encouraged the people to continue to have faith in the government of the day and never to lose hope with the current situation of things in the country.

He opined that the reforms that are going on in the country today would surely lead to a lasting economic greatness, and likened the scenario to that of a great farmer who plants seeds, water them and waiting patiently for it to germinate and at the end he happily harvests his bountiful fruits. He also enjoined the people of the State to continue to support the administration of the State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma in his efforts to reposition the State better. He added that the governor “is doing well and needs all the support to succeed citing example with the Egbu-Mbaise-Umuahia dual carriage road which has reduced dreadlocks and crimes on the axis during this yuletide.”

The Provincial President of the Catholic Laity Council of Nigeria, Hon. Placidus Onyedikachi Chijioke thanked Chief Jerry Chukwueke for remembering the Laity and starting with Owerri Province where he came from, he opined that every beneficiary was carefully selected and also seen as the most vulnerable.

He assured their guest (Chukwueke) of making sure the story of his benevolence is heard in all parts of the Catholic community in Nigeria.

Leaders from Owerri Archdiocese and that of the Orlu and Okigwe dioceses, in their separate speeches expressed satisfaction with the organization of the program and tagged it as the most peaceful and well planned events.

Also touched by the love of empathy shown by Chief Chukwueke, Rev. Fr. Lacerian Iwu, the Cathedral Financial Administrator of Ahiara diocese, prayed for him and blessed the items before effective and efficient sharing begun without rancour or stampede. The most significant milestone achieved in this initiative was the quiet and peaceful scene devoid of stampede and other unpalatable stories that were associated with huge gatherings of crowd in sharing of palliatives across the country. Chukwueke applied wisdom, security intelligence and strong tool management techniques to ensure hitch-free programme.

Some of the beneficiaries expressed happiness and prayed to God to continue to bless Chief Chukwueke in his endeavours as the highlight featured prayer section by the beneficiaries on the sponsor of the programme. Based on the excellent arrangements put up by the organizers, there were encomiums showered on  Chukwueke by the beneficiaries and the the Church leaders. To this end, Chukwueke has scored high points in the management of people which he is used to that long ago earned him the title of ‘the great Mobilizer’.

Having successfully concluded a statewide palliative programme, Chukwueke commenced the sponsorship of some communities in the State for the enrollment of the State Health Insurance Scheme which began from his Awaka-Ihitteogada clan in Owerri North Local Government.

He eulogized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Governor Hope Uzodinma for the community health insurance scheme initiatives. Over 5000 residents of his clan are benefiting from this health insurance scheme. Chukwueke also promised to enlist another set of 5000 beneficiaries from across the State into the health insurance initiative. This is indeed a marvelous gesture that needs to be commended holistically.

This separate occasion had the presence of the Imo State Health  Commissioner, Dr. Prosper Success Ohayagha who assured the Awaka-Ihitteogada community leaders that the State government would take urgent steps to rehabilitate the moribund Awaka Healthcare Centre.

“This insurance scheme for Awaka and Ihitte Ogada communities means that your people will access free medical treatment from the premium your son, Chief Jerry Chukwueke will pay.”

In his remarks, Dr. Uchenna Ewelike, Executive Secretary of IMSHIS thanked Chief Chukwueke for his bold initiative to help his people access free healthcare. “This act of kindness,” he said, “is the best thing anyone can give to his people. The most significant advantage is that community members will have access to free healthcare services, eliminating the financial burden of medical expenses and hardship. The residue effect is an improved health outcomes, reduced morbidity and mortality rates.”

Chief Jerry Chukwueke, said that he  decided to embark on this project as a sacrifice and to share with others God’s blessings and grace upon his family. The innate desire to touch people’s lives, he said, is a family trait that is in tandem with the just concluded statewide palliative program  for women and indigent families.

He further said that for the cynics, everything must not be viewed in the cynical lens of politicking “because real hard earned personal resources are involved, and the desire to touch people’s lives and make a difference is real,” saying  “God gave his best and all to redeem mankind and we are today the apostles of the great commission to reach out and touch the lives of the least of our brothers and sisters amongst us. He used the opportunity to appeal to men and women with the means and capacity to do the same for their communities and, by doing so, reduces the burden on the governor and the governed.

Making his vote of thanks, Justice Paschal Nnadi, Retired Chief Judge of the State who will  oversee the enrollment of residents of the clan into the health insurance scheme, expressed the gratitude of the people of Awaka ancient kingdom to one of their illustrious sons for his act of benevolence and generosity to their people and the good people of Imo State. He prayed for divine guidance, protection,  sustenance, and grace to continue his good works.

The efforts made by Chukwueke in Imo State exemplify how spiritual values can catalyse meaningful actions that uplift women and the indigent population. By recognising the needs of these groups and responding with acts of kindness, he not only addresses immediate challenges but also lay the groundwork for long-term empowerment and development.

NBA Yenagoa writes CP over suspect’s death in custody

The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Yenagoa Branch, has petitioned the Commissioner of Police, Bayelsa State Command, over the death of a suspect, one Joseph Zolo, in the custody of the Puff Adder Unit as well as the intimidation and violations of the deceased family.

In a petition to the CP, Francis Idu, and copied to the Inspector-General of Police, signed by the Chairman, NBA, Yenagoa Branch, Somina Johnbull, and Chairman, Human Rights Committee, NBA Yenagoa Branch, Lugard Tare-Otu, the group complained about incidents at the Unit led by Chief Superintendent of Police, Christian Nwaogbo.

According to the petition: “On Wednesday, January 8, 2025, Mr. Joseph Zolo (now deceased) and two others were apprehended by the Safer Highways Unit of the Bayelsa State Police Command for allegedly possessing marijuana.

“They were subsequently handed over to CSP Christian Nwaogbo and his officers at the Puff Adder Unit, where Mr. Zolo was unlawfully detained from January 8 to January 12, 2025, without charge, trial, or the possibility of bail, despite repeated attempts by his family to secure his release.

“Tragically, on January 12, 2025, Mr. Zolo died in police custody, reportedly as a result of torture that exacerbated his pre-existing health conditions.

“On the following day, the youth council leader of Biogbolo Community, accompanied by two relatives of the deceased and their lawyer, Mr. Bodiswowei Oyomowie, visited the Puff Adder Division to inquire about Mr. Zolo’s death.

“Instead of receiving a reasonable response, they were met with hostility. CSP Nwaogbo and his officers not only refused to answer their inquiries but also seized their phones, locked the gates, and forced them to sit on the floor.

“To escalate the situation further, the officers fired sporadically into the air, creating a life-threatening and highly traumatic environment for those present.”

The petition said the actions of the officers of the Puff Adder constituted gross misconduct, abuse of power, and a direct violation of the fundamental rights of Mr. Fred Bodiswowei Oyomowie, the family members of the deceased, and others present at the station.

He said those individuals were subjected to verbal threats and harassment, causing them severe trauma and a genuine fear for their safety.

It stated: “It was only after the intervention of the Bayelsa State Government that those individuals were eventually released. “To make matters worse, it was later discovered that the body of the deceased was unilaterally deposited in a mortuary by CSP Nwaogbo and his officers, without any consultation with the family or proper legal procedures.

“These events are part of a troubling pattern of human rights violations at the Puff Adder Division, which has become notorious.

“Such actions tarnish the reputation of the Bayelsa State Police Command and represent a flagrant abuse of authority and a gross breach of citizens’ rights.”

The NBA leaders, therefore, besought the good offices of the CP to investigate the death of  Zolo.

They also urged the CP to probe the conduct of Nwaogbo and his men on the matter.

Also, they demanded that if indicted, the police officers involved should be sanctioned.

The leadership equally urged the police authorities to restore public confidence by addressing the culture of impunity in the Unit.

“NBA Yenagoa Branch remains committed to the protection of human rights and the pursuit of justice for citizens.

“We are prepared to assist your office in ensuring that justice is served in this matter,” the petition said.

    Engineers induct 600 graduates

The Nigerian Society of Engineers  (NSE), Lagos Branch, has inducted over 600 fresh graduates into the society.

The ceremony was held at the Secretariat of the branch at the premises of the University of Lagos.

Speaking on the theme: “AI Revolution in Engineering: Entrepreneurship And  Nation Building,” the guest speaker, Dideolu Falobi, an engineer, described Artificial Intelligence as turning machine into human being, adding that it is a system of telling the machine to perform human work.

The guest speaker advised the graduates to take time out to learn AI and ensure its rightful deployment.

“AI is now being deployed in virtually every industry, so, for every young engineer coming out of school, its incomplete if you are not conversant with the basics of AI and how to deploy it in whatever function,” he said.

The MD of Crestal Laurel Engineering firm noted that AI is being deployed in engineering, construction, and management, adding that the ultimate objective of the AI is to get to a point where they function as human beings.

“Every new innovation, new technology offers new door of opportunity. AI is the most revolutionary. So, there’s nothing like losing your job but there would be new opportunities,” he said.

Chairman of the branch, Olukorede Kesha, who said that during their time there was  no such thing as technology, frowned at many young graduates who spend about 18 hours out of 24 hours to do negative things.

She advised them to  channel those time or efforts into doing constructive things, saying that someone used such time to invent AI.

“They can take advantage of this in the area of infrastructure. If care is not taken, AIcould replace humans.”

“I am not an advocate of it, but you can’t stop a moving train.

It’s either you jump into it or you are left behind. So, we advise them to jump into the moving train.

“We need this generation to take us to the next level because the world is not waiting for us, and Nigeria can’t afford to lag behind. They should channel their efforts into technology in the right direction,” she said.
