Why I ventured into music – Skit maker Taaooma

Popular skit maker, Maryam Akpaokagi, aka Taaooma, has explained her new found talent in music.

The comedienne stated that she ventured into music because she felt it would be better to use her songs in skits rather than songs of other artists.

She spoke as a guest on the latest episode of The Leaderboard podcast hosted by Fisayo Fosudo.

She said: “For me, entertainment is freedom. You can do anything.

“I also like the fact that it’s my music. It’s my song. It’s a song that I can be proud that I made. I just feel like, I’m using other people’s songs in my skits, and this thing is not so hard. I have a studio, we can record songs.

“I love music. Some people used to say I have a melodic voice. But, I feel like, instead of me trying to sing, we can do collaborations and make something happen.”

On those criticising her music, Taaooma said it was up to God and commitment to prove them wrong.

The multiple award-winning movie producer stated from that point on, he strived really hard to see his himself and siblings through school, attributing all of his life’s successes so far to Makun matriarch’s last words of admonition to him.

He said: “I came home to ask for money that I needed for school, and the money wasn’t available. And then, we had lost my dad” he stated in an interview with Nancy Isime.

“So, my mum was seeing me off, she was practically walking me on the street and encouraging me. She said, ‘You know Yomi is looking up to you, Lanre is looking up to you. Your younger ones are looking up to you. Don’t go and do anything funny, don’t be a part of any cult.’

“But the money dem never give me o wey I find come o but dem dey encourage me.

‘I know that it’s difficult, but then, just know that your younger ones are looking up to you. Don’t go and do anything stupid. God will do it at the right time’, his mom added.

“Do you know how touching it will be getting all that messages from your mum, and then you get a call while in school that you’ve lost your mum?

“So, all of that moulded me like, okay, this is going to make me live a certain way of life. That was what gave me the boost to work extra hard to see myself through school, see my younger ones through school.

“It was her message. Her message was more like, ‘Your younger ones are looking up to you.’ That message was what gave me the foundation of everything that makes me stand out today.”

Yivera: Unleashing potential of Nigerian music creative acts

The digital revolution has transformed the music industry, providing artists with wider access to global audiences.

However, despite this progress, many independent artists face significant challenges in monetizing their music and recovering their royalties.

Recognizing this glaring issue, Perry Martins, the CEO of Gotright Innovations Ltd, led a team of young Nigerians to develop Yivera, a groundbreaking digital distribution, licensing, and publishing platform.

Yivera offers a technology infrastructure and platform that enables Nigerian artists to distribute their music globally. The platform ensures that artists’ music reaches popular international platforms such as iTunes, Spotify, YouTube, Boomplay, AudioMack, and more.

What sets Yivera apart is its integration with local payment processors and mobile money platforms available in Africa. This unique feature enables seamless payment processing for artists and ensures that they can receive their hard-earned royalties with ease.

In addition to its distribution capabilities, Yivera provides artists with a robust accounting and analytics module. This module offers valuable data insights into the market performance of an artist’s music catalogue. Artists can access detailed reports, understand their revenue streams, and make informed decisions about their music career.

Yivera serves as an all-in-one music business tool, empowering artists to take control of their financial success.

The driving force behind Yivera was a genuine concern for Nigeria’s music creative acts and their future. Martins and his team observed that many artists were releasing their music for free download online or struggling to receive their earnings from international platforms.

Yivera’s vision aims to offer upfront royalties, digital marketing tools, and other exciting features to further support artists in their journey.

Jahbless: Japa if Nigeria isn’t working for you

Veteran singer and nightlife boss, Jahbless has advised Nigerians to leave the country for a greener pasture if the country isn’t working as expected.

Jahbless said this in a video posted on his social media page while giving his quota on the Nigerian leadership and economy.

He said: “If you think things are not moving, you’re stuck, the system does not create opportunities for growth, go to where there’s opportunity for growth, leave them. I know it’s not easy but trust me the information is out there.

“Your problem is you don’t know how to seek the informations that you need but the information is out there. Leave, go to a system where things are working, they support their citizens, there are rooms for opportunities. Have you ever noticed that when people leave in couple of years their lives get better so why are you confiding yourself to be in that space and you’re not trying to seek other alternatives.”

  • D1 Adeneye: Invest wisely while you are reigning star

D1 Adeneye: Invest wisely while you are reigning star

Celebrated show host, media entrepreneur and politician, Dr. Dayo Adeneye aka D1, has advised musicians to save for the rainy day and invest wisely as nobody can remain on top forever. He gave this advice at an educational workshop to tutor fresh graduates on their career paths. The co-CEO of Primetime Entertainment in this chat with SAM ANOKAM also talks about his contributions to the popularisation of afrobeats as well as other relevant topics in the entertainment industry.

What is your impression about seminars on enlightening the youths?

It’s about youth empowerment, a way to guide our young people, point them in the right direction especially graduates fresh from the university that do not know which direction they want to go. It is just our own small way of giving back and helping guide them in their chosen career or in entrepreneurship, just to give them guardianship and mentorship.

You noted the evolution of Afrobeats, how you started it from the songs you helped push, how was it like then?

I don’t take credit for starting Afrobeats. I didn’t mean to say I started Afrobeats, the foundation, the seeds for Afrobeats were sown with the likes of Daddy Showkey, Tony Tetuila, etc but mostly promulgated with the platforms of Raypower and AIT. The late Dr. Dokpesi, at that time, gave his platform for us to support local artists and by that we were able to grow our local talents into what you are hearing today.

You have seen it all in the entertainment industry in Nigeria, what is your impression about what is happening in the music industry?

It is growing in leaps and bounds. We always knew it would blow.  Nigeria is a country of 250 million people. Look, people think Burna boy is the first Nigerian to win award,  the Grammy – King Sunny Ade has been nominated over seven times, late Fela Anikulapo, Femi Kuti was nominated for Grammys seven times, Sade Adu has won the Grammys, Seal has won Grammys, so Nigerians have won it before. It is just that this young generation thinks these young people that are doing it are the first to do it now. But that is all well and good. They are bringing Nigeria into the good light when they are performing or winning awards , positive things are being said about Nigeria rather than 419 or drug smuggling. They are bringing positive attention to Nigeria.

What is happening to Kennis music?

Kennis Music is still very much there. We are more into radio and TV now and not so much into the artists because now artists are doing their thing on social media. We have evolved. We also have Kennis FM. We have to evolve with the times and that is what we are doing now.

    Are you still discovering talents?

We discover talents everyday. Some talents were discovered here today but what you do with them is another thing. I don’t have the time or energy at my age like I said earlier to be chasing artists anymore but we still find ways to nurture them.

What do you think the young generation is doing that is not right that needs to be corrected?

My job is not to find what they are doing to correct. They are adults, they know what is right and what is wrong for their career and for themselves. From experience, I would say they need to invest their money properly. That is the number one thing. You are on top today does not mean that you are going to be on top forever. While you are on top, gather your money, energies, and invest wisely. Nobody stays on top forever. Michael Jackson didn’t reign forever, so while you are on top, be reasonable with your income, be grounded, invest wisely, tie your money and invest. Let your money work for you. Whether you are on top today or another artist is coming after you tomorrow, nobody stays number one forever.

What is your impression about entertainers or celebrities going into politics like yourself?

It is just a profession. The people that are in politics now were not born politicians, some of them are doctors, lawyers, engineers, etc, so, it is just a profession. Why can’t somebody in entertainment aspire to contribute to the decisions that are being made in Nigeria? I don’t think it is such a big deal and we should not make a big deal out of it. Entertainers are citizens. The people that are in politics are also citizens.

Are you encouraging more to come out?

That is one of the reasons I went into it. I didn’t want to sit at home and be one of those complainants. They say if you cannot beat them, join them. You can make a difference from being on the inside rather than sitting at your home and making complaints. I don’t want to ever be a part of people that just sit around and complain. I also realise that some others aspire and look up to us, the young ones can be like if D1 can do it, I can do it too. All of us cannot sit at home and say politics is dirty or I cannot participate because the decisions those people make affect you and I. It is good to participate and get involved.

University degree was to satisfy my mum, says TY Bello

Popular photographer, Toyin Sokefun-Bello aka TY Bello, said her university degree was just to satisfy her mother.

The artiste said her plan was to become a “big hairstylist” after graduation, adding that she has always been creative as far back as she can remember.

According to Bello, her love for writing songs evolved at eight.

The ‘Land is Green’ crooner stated this while featuring as a guest on the latest episode of I Said What I Said podcast, co-hosted by FK and Jola.

She said she started photography and music almost at the same time.

“I have been writing songs since I was 8, 9, 10. I started music and photography professionally right at the same time.

“After university, when everyone in my class knew where they wanted to work. And I had no such dream. I was very confused.

“University was that period where I thought, ‘okay, let me go to school to make my mum happy. Then I was going to graduate to be a big hairstylist.’ I thought that was my future.

“When it came to NYSC and everybody asked where to be posted to, I asked to be posted to the south. I was like, what do I do? And I think that was the major turning point where I realised that I had to be posted to phototech because I just started photography.

“It wasn’t like I wanted to be a photographer all my life, but that one move made me who I am today,” she said.
