  • Aggrieved voters hold NYSC members hostage in Delta

Aggrieved voters hold NYSC members hostage in Delta

Three members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) deployed as ad-hoc staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the rescheduled presidential and National Assembly (NASS) elections have been held hostage by disenfranchised voters in Warri South Local Government Area of Delta state.

The trio of Udon Stephanie, Igein Theresa and Adeleke Yetunde was deployed to Ward 4, unit 19 at Oki Street, Okere Road, Warri and were still being held as of 6.45p.m Sunday evening.

They were reportedly held after the Bimodal Voters Accreditation System (BVAS) malfunctioned, stalling the accreditation of voters at the unit.

It was gathered that the ad hoc staff arrived at the polling unit for the postponed election around 4 pm and were deserted by their Supervisory Polling Officer (SPO) after the hitch.

Angered by the development, the electorate who had waited endlessly in anticipation insisted they go nowhere until they exercise their right.

Adeleke while lamenting her ordeal, said: “The BVAS crashed when we were trying to reboot it. We called the RAC because they said it was a technology problem. They said they didn’t reconfigure it to read today (Sunday) because it was still reading yesterday (Saturday). So we became stuck as a result. Now they’re accusing me of collecting N50,000. I don’t know anyone here and I didn’t collect any money

“We are supposed to do the work yesterday but because no voting took place here, they moved the exercise to today. A lot of our colleagues pulled out and now I am regretting not pulling out”.

The two other ad-hoc staff, Udoh Stephanie and Theresa Igein, accused the Supervisory Polling Officer (SPO) of dumping them, as well as leaving them without security knowing fully the BVAS was not configured properly.

One of the community members however assured that no harm will come to the three officials.

The electoral officer, Kingsley Ogboe, who had been mum on all electoral issues regarding the exercise in Warri South, did not also make comments.
